- The Princess and the Frog’s prologue introduces us to Tiana’s father, James. He worked hard to provide what he could for his family and those around him. He’s the one who inspired Tiana to cook and to dream about one day owning a restaurant in her family’s name. There wasn’t much information surrounding what happened to James, though we do see a medal alongside a picture of him in his military uniform, implying that he died in service of his country during World War I. That’s really as much as we can conclude about Tiana’s father from the subtle clues spread throughout the prologue and rest of Tiana’s adventure. And the movie would have us believe that James has been dead since the beginning of the film. However, there is actually a theory floating around that claims that Tiana’s father might not have died in the war. And instead makes his appearance throughout the movie as Dr. Facilier, the shadow man, the antagonist of the movie!

Wow. For a black man to get such a distinguished medal during that time; he must've single-handedly saved everyone in his platoon, plus a visiting official, plus a five star general. When u consider the racism in the military back then, it's surprising that even if he did all that he would still get medal and not some white guy in the same platoon as him

Tiana's dad and Dr. Facilier don't look anything alike. The "supporting evidence" is basically just saying they look alike because they're both black. But looking at their character designs, they don't have the same chin, the same lips, the same nose or eyes, they don't even have the same hair color or skin shade. I think the theory is BS.
Well true the character designs may not look alike but she did say that "technally he must've died or didn't" she brought up something about like the voodoo spirits brought him back to life,(or something like that) but hey I totally get what your saying tho

It's not really about that, he still is a good guy just warped by the things that have happened/ influenced him over the years. He was changed mentally and physically but that doesn't change that he was a war hero and a great dad if the theory was right

In the movie Tiana's dad is not only seen as someone who was courageous and heroic but as someone who had a great love for his family (Tiana in particular). I think that not only is this theory far fetched, it makes absolutely no sense seeing that he loved Tiana so much why would he come back as someone who pushed his beloved daughter to such an extent that she almost died.
And that's why the character was written for a black characters not white and black famale princess for young black women to grow up and not grow up feeling ashamed for the race

In the Disney book "Almost There : *A Twisted Tale* ", it's revealed that Tiana's father died at war when she was 14. You can find this information in the prologue of the book. I consider this canon since this comes from a *Disney Official* series.
Don't forget. Skilled tarot readers see a lot in the cards. And being able to communicate with the spirit world. So no, I don't buy her father became the shadow man. No dice

Honestly the how did he know is pretty easy, just about everyone who knew Tiana knew how she never took a break and basically worked her butt off to save enough money for her restaurant. Also considering where she worked and the amount of people that probably go there, it’s not impossible for the information to somehow reach his ears, also he has his friends on the other side and he uses voodoo magic so I can also imagine he is able to see into peoples hearts and discover their greatest desires, just like he did with Naveen and his assistant dude and then with Tiana, he knew perfectly what they desired and the first two fell for the temptation and Tiana didn’t.
He was in the restaurant when the other people asked her to go out and they was talking about her and her dreams
Not to mention he idolized her best friend's father. So he probably was planning on using her at some point to get to Lottie's daddy
Yeah believe me when I say, in the black community you will hear gossip about a person you barely know if you live in the area long enough.
Dr. Facilier was in the diner when Tiana got the money for her restaurant from Lotte. He was following Mr. Lebouf. That is how he knew about Tiana and her wanting to have her own restaurant.
Crazy idea, but too farfetched. Way too much hinders the idea, considering everything he does, knows, and has motivation for strives from the 'friends on the other side.'
Notice how Mama Odie is the queen of the bayou. And Dr facilier said during his song "friends on the other side" he said I'm a royal myself on my mother's side. He then held up a voodoo doll of a queen with her eye hanging out. Mama Odie is blind. Meaning Dr facilier did voodoo on his mom to make her blind.
During that same song, his shadow turns into a snake. Mama Odie has a pet snake. But it's not a pet. She kisses the snake passionately. Meaning that the snake is her husband. Dr. Faciler did voodoo to turn his dad into a snake.
I can't believe that he'd attack his daughter, for he would have recognized his daughter's voice and who she was
''Facilier would have been Mama Odie's son, who followed the path of the dark arts, unlike his mother. In this same script, there was to be a showdown between the two of them, which would have converged into a major battle during the Mardi Gras festivities.''
The script might be scrapped but the fact that she easily defeats one of Dr Facilier's "friends" and getting serious after she chuckles and says "Now, WHO MADE A DEAL WITH THE SHADOW MAN?!"(actual line from the latest version of the movie) like that shows that this still might be canon. But they problably scrapped because they don't want young children to see Dr Facilier and start getting rebellion on their parents like he did. Though this is my opinion. But I guess it's up to the audience now to decide if Dr Facilier is related to Mama Odie or not...
Not to mention in Maleficent after Maleficent crushes the party she greets the King in a insincere way. But she doesn't greets the Queen. It's because of their backstory. But I rewatched the moment Maleficent curses Aurora in the Disney's orginal "Sleeping Beauty" and in their she also greets the King but not greet thr Queen. It shows her backstory from Maleficent did happend in both films. But in the Sleeping Beauty it has been censored. The good times Maleficent and Aurora had has been censored too I guess. It's problably for not confusing younger audinces' minds. Which shows that something doesn't just have to be shown just to be canon...

No that makes no sense. Remember in the beginning of the movie, he knew Lawrence and Naveen's secrets and wishes. Part of his dark voodoo is to determine the wishes and weaknesses of his prey so that he can use them to get the deals. Same with Tiana later. He was desperate because he knew it was time to pay too, and as long as he had the talisman for which he sold his soul in the deals he made then he could repay and save himself. He was just using their weaknesses against them

No offence, I don't see the connection. Tiana probably heard of The shadow man/Dr. Facilier through other people. Dr. Facilier probably knows so much about Tiana through voodoo, I wouldn't be surprised if he has a crystal ball to see people's weaknesses so he studied about Naveen's friend that's helping him escape

In the area I grew up there was a guy called ‘Crazy Joe’. I personally never met him but I heard lots of stuff about him and knew where he lived as we often passed where he lived or visited the movie rental place next door to him.
All I know about him was he was from a wealthy family and was ‘banished’ to our small rural town for either doing drugs and refusing to go to rehab or was permanently messed up by hard drugs.
I heard that he used to sit nude in a lawn chair in front of his house and at least once put a bath on the roof of a porch(?) and took a bath.
At the time a main road went by his house.
The year before I was born born they moved the main road over due to semis flipping taking a turn and slowly the front of his house filled with stuff that formed an incomplete barrier that created a level of privacy.
He passed away several years back and they tore his house down as it was in terrible shape and had been basically condemned for years.
So yeah, people with certain reputations are known and someone like Falicfer would be known and have his ways of knowing stuff.
He was in the same diner Tiana was in, so he should of heard Charolette doing all that screaming and Tiana talk about wanting a restaurant.

Going to the dark side isn't something we would have expected a young Anakin to do either. But he grew up up to become someone even he didn't recognize anymore and his reason for doing so was his family.
It could also be a misconception that if a princess kisses a prince who was turned into a frog that HE would turn back. It. Is possible that the spell would simply make them compatible (which could be assumed to mean he would be human again) and instead transform her to his status. (A frog) remember it was evil magic that made him a frog in the first place. So perhaps an evil twist to the spell. Besides if the kiss had turned him human, Naveen would still be selfish. It was the journey he took (as a frog) with Tiana that made him the true prince/good guy he became.
Honestly how he knew everything about her is easy enough to explain as the spirits giving him information that would make him more likely to tempt her. Information like her name and heart’s desire would be basic, and his difference in approach could come down to her being female.
Though it would be amusing if he made a deal with the devil to get Tiana her restaurant and then the devil turned him into a villain that would manipulate events in such a way that would make that happen.
Why would you assume her father went to hell? 👀 He was a great man, giving, caring, and that saved many people. So, him going to hell to have to ask the devil for anything doesn't make one drop of sense.

After all successfully corrupting a virtuous man not only proves his view of humans as basically evil but it deprives heaven of a soul it should have gotten.

Why would her father make a deal for her a restaurant, when her desire for a restaurant was after her father died? She wanted to accomplish the dream that he could not.
I kinda feel like this theory kinda aims more racial based in a negative way for the sad truth about any black or different race characters perfect or not someone will make or strive to find flaws which sucks
There is an incorrect assumption here, one that Voodoo is dark magic, that was one part of the film I found to be ridiculous, including the use of Adrinka symbols as evil magic symbols-completely untrue.

Yeah that's what's bothering me the most about this video and it's not the first time I've seen people mispronounce his name in a video about princess and the frog.

theory is interesting, but doesn't hold weight at all. Considering that the guy is litterally in leauge with demonic entities, its safe to assume that he was able to gleam information regarding tiana in order to attempt to persuade her like all his other clients.
It's made clear that Shadow Man eavesdrops and pays attention to the city around him, like the newspaper that tells him about Naveen. Tiana is well known in the area. Add in the spirits are believed to be the power and the ones that deliver info as well, and he doesn't need anything else. Easiest way to get someone like Tiana to listen is to appeal to the nurturing friend nature and the spirits would be using her own mind against her so her dream setting in her head along with the photo she carried and what was considered rich for the time was all he needed.
Trying to turn a good father and dedicated war hero into the soulless villain here seems like the racism didn't get left back in the era of the movie.
There’s a way he could’ve known alot about Tiana. Go to her best friend and get information.
He probably talked to Tiana nicely because there’s a chance he had something similar to Tiana’s dream.

I think he admired her. They both were working hard for their dreams. He just happened to have another set of skills. It's like a shaman and baker both keep people alive,both are hard work, both jobs are not the best in New Orleans. She needs to rise up to owner and he needs to rise up to having a house because I think he lives in his shop.
I think the shadow man's character design is kind of based on Prince.
Well I belive that the shadow man was her father and he has voodoo so that makes him a royal , but a different than the prince . So perhaps even the shadow man even kept a secret from his wife and his daughter and all along loved them but really was a villain of the story. So maybe the prince needed a princess like him. I loved the video!

It’s already confirmed he was in the military of sorts just look at the picture on the dresser in the beginning of the movie.
The shadow man is her grandad, he killed her dad to gain some twisted control over the spirits for material power. The woman down at the bayou is her grandmother. She is royalty but if she doesn't know it she can't activate it, it's dormant. On 05.03.22 At 06:36 GMT

Hey there, what if the shadow man knew so much of Tiana wasn't because he was her dad but because he was her uncle? And not as a full-blooded sibling to either Tiana's mom or dad. But instead, a half-sibling shares the same dad but has different moms.
The shadow man could have been the black sheep in the family and only had a good relationship with the half-sibling that is Tiana's parent. One day the shadow man tells the family that he is cutting all ties to the family and leaving to become the shadow man.
But because he deep down still cares for the only nice family member to him. He kept an eye on his half-sibling and in turn his sibling-in-law and his niece Tiana. Which leads to him knowing so much about Tiana. he was an uncle that was talking Tiana's family for who knows how many years.

Very unlikely. As for how he would know about Tiana's history, it's sensible that as Voodoist aka a Witch Doctor, he would use scrying and divination to understand those involved in his schemes. And because of his goal to that involved Big Daddy Labuff, he would need the know the people involved with the Rich Family and considering Tiana and Charlotte were so close, naturally he would look into her. Plus clearly he goes to the restaurant Tiana works at he could have learned of her that way.
What if, and this is totally far fetched, the shadow man is from the future and is a further descendant of Tiana? I mean he could be a grand son or great grandson who had fallen in love with some who is not royal. Or he could even be a descendant of Tiana's childhood friend Sharlet?
I feel more like he made a deal with the shadow man, that ultimately cost his life, trying to get tiana her dream.
Her father was dead, before Tianna was even old enough or mentioned a dream. Besides, her dream was to carry out her father's dream. What you said doesn't make sense!
The difference between Tiana and Naveen is that while Naveen came from 2 long lines of royalty, Tiana did not. Even if her father was Dr. Facilier who is royalty, her mother may not have come from any royal family or not. Idk how much percentage of a princess a girl has to be to turn a frog back into a Prince when kissing him, but if you have to be 100% royalty in order to turn a prince back into a human, then that would still make the theory possible that Dr. Facilier could be Tiana’s father James.

NO! Don't you dare downgrade or tarnish her father. The man is dead. Dr. Facilier is the shadow man.... he does magic... err voodoo and shadows. Seriously, it's not too hard to have one of his shadows do recon, he's done a lot of things in the movie that that is a viable option. As for how he treats Tiana, perhaps he thinks she's pretty, or since they are both Black Americans, they feel a little more familiar. He also might have a sense of who she is and can relate to her.

Yeah, about the kissing frog turning into a frog issue. Why did it only happen to Tiana? And by that I mean at the end of the movie her best friend kisses the frog and nothing happens even though at the time she was not a princess, if these are the rules why was she not turned into a frog as well? What's your theory on that?
My personal theory is the only reason Tiana turned into a frog was the doing of Dr. Faciliar and and friends on the other side trying to hinder any chance of saving the prince. If the only girl who knows he is a prince stayed human she easily could have convinced her friend to kiss him. But as a frog she cannot just easily approach people. But once Faciliar was dead his power over the curse died. The prince remained a frog and can only be cured with a kiss from a princess, however. Non princesses kissing him will not turn into frogs as well.
He knows all that stuff cuz he is a shadow man lol the ghosts, his friends, probably told him all about her.

Dr.Facilier could have been a war buddy or sibling of Tiana’s father which would solve why he knows more about Tiana than she knows about him but, explaining why he spoke personally to Tiana.
This one could work; It is plausable for the voodoo man to be Tiana's uncle...

there are a number of wholes in this story .
1 . in his intro song Facilier said he had voodoo tools and stuff he hasn't even tried .
now unless there is a garage sale on voodoo tools every year from he started work in his town there is no way for him to have such a collection of items .
2 the blind lady in the movie whos name i dont know .
she talked about the shadow man as they had a histoy like they had a few fights and she had to deal with his shadows from time to time .
3 . i think one of his powers may be the abilaty to read the hearts and minds to a degree of those he is tring to get a deal out of and seeing as he has some power over shadows it is likely he lets his shadows follow set people aka big targets for him to get a deal out of .
now as for time having the amount of power he has and skill over the stuff he has to have been at the job a long time to be as good as he was and have all the stuff he has witch is yet another whole in this story .

I feel like this could be true if you consider that making a voodoo deal cpuld have turned ones personality and morals around entirely. But it still feels a bit far fetched
the most impressive part of Tiana's father getting a medal was that he was a black man who got credit for his heroism in World War I. most times their white superior officers took all credit.
honestly that's the biggest evidence for a deal with dark powers that I see.
about history and medals, it is not only the second most important medal, but the most important medal a black man could earn in that age, so he could be perfectly someone who earned the most ranked condecoration, but being a black man they couldn't give it to him
I'm going to be really honest, sometimes I think theorists get so caught up in whether they can spin something from nothing they don't stop to think if they should.
How do I say this gently?
When you claim Tiana's father and Dr. Facilier look similar, or have similar design, but offer up no verbal examples of what you mean by that, it comes off as if you cannot find a way to say it that does not specifically reference their noses and lips, or give any clear examples of what you mean by that really... It just feels kinda... what DO you mean by that? Can you support the similarities you supposedly see? Because all I see is an effort by Disney to draw black men with accurate facial structures and NOT an indication that they are supposed to uh... look or be exactly the same person.
Further, can we have some respect for the very real people Tiana's father represented in the story? Actual brave black men who fought and died for their country despite being ineligible for certain types of service and under segregation when they could? Frankly, I don't think you know enough black history and culture to cover this sensitively and say the things you want to say in a way that's straightforward.
I'm having trouble articulating how deeply I feel this speculation about selling ones' soul to the Voodoo Spirits and becoming indebted to them isn't the same as wondering if Chip could have been the Beasts illegitimate son based on mixed fictional lore from a the original movie, a straight to video sequel, and the live action remake. I'm not trying to come off as aggressive, I'm just wondering if anybody else has raised similar concerns about this video?
Edit: Also, it's a children's movie. Why does the villian knowing a lot about Tiana have to be deeper than, "this is a magical, mystical, all-knowing supernatural force aligned with darkness?" It doesn't. It feels like you're reaching to turn a character Disney lovingly and intentionally depicted as a hero into a villain. This whole video feels like someone's unexplored anti-blackness on display.
I'm sooooo glad there's a video on this. I've always thought that Tiana's dad and Dr. Facilier were connected, or maybe even the same person. I sadly and not sadly do this with a lot of Disney movies and shows. The fact that someone's theory has seen the light makes me giddy.

This thing about Dr. Facilier does not make sense at all; If Tiana's father had managed to survive the war; he would've been in his late 40's/early 50's; he would not have looked as young as the Voodoo man looks now; it is impossible to have the time in between to practice something as serious as voodoo magic: You have to start as early as either a teen or be of twenty years of age for that and Tiana's father was already in his mid 20's before he joined the army.

For the sake of the argument let’s say they are the same person. You “make a deal with the devil” and it has consequences. Maybe one of the consequences was him being completely unrecognizable in features that even if he were to go back home to his wife and daughter they wouldn’t have accepted him as himself. That can take a toll on one’s mental health, possibly causing him to spiral out of control and turn into the crazy creep that he is, instead of the respected man he once was.
Or, again, consequences of him making a deal with these voodoo spirits is that it corrupted his soul, or broke his soul so that he wasn’t his former self. From there he could’ve used his magic to change his appearance to reflect his new character, or by having his soul corrupted that could have been what changed his appearance.
Now, on the other side of the argument, they’re not the same person. He’s a voodoo practitioner. Why wouldn’t he have used some voodoo magic to get in Tiana’s head to figure out her hopes and dreams to then use it against her. You don’t have to personally know someone to know their innermost desires. You just need to have the right spell or potion.
The other explanation for turning to the dark voodoo spirits would be during WW1 at a dire time when his men and he were on the verge of total loss. War, specifically World Wars can make any soldier desperate. No soldier has ever come back from any battle without a scar. If they tell you otherwise, they were fortunate, not lucky. Shadow man is also a clever name as it can mean cowardly like the phrase, "The shadow of a man". Shadow man was once, Tiana's father strong and courageous now he is just a shadow of a man he once was allowing madness to consume him. Darkness preys on the hearts as they see it as the weakness of the enemy and their strength to exploit. The royal on my mother's side quote was a nod to voodoo history, however, I believe that it was more of a means to trick the prince rather than an actual fact.

The oldest Disney princess in the cannon of Disney princesses is actually Cinderella at 19 this is fact snow white is youngest at 13 . Ariel was 16 etc.

One of Dr. Facilier 's powers is to see what his victims wants. Second, he knows her name because that might be another power or Tiana was working at one well known restaurant, why couldn't she the other restaurant be a well known place. As such, since she only believes in her own hard work, the shadow man would have seen her at work and tried to find a way to tempt her(conman 1o1, know the mark). Or simplify and he just knows her as the waitress. You always remember the best waitress. Finally, she knows him simply because he is the shadow man. saying something is or isn't dark magic doesn't change the different religious views or different practices. for example, necromancy. its considered bad magic in the views of the church but it is considered a form of divination as its similar in nature to being a medium. certain groups will paint anything as 'dark magic' to justify their views.

To be able to pay his debts, it’s literally The Shadowmans job to know everything about everyone, to be able to manipulate and gaslight them into deals with him. It wouldn’t matter if he knew Tiana or not because he would have to in order to get what he wanted from them
They only way I can see this making any sense is if Tiana's father was on the brink of death at some point during his time on the western front and made a deal with the voodoo spirits to get back to his family, as for the difference in appearance, attitude and behaviour? Say the combination of the war and his deal with the voodoo spirits warped him both physically and mentally so bad that his mind snapped and adopted the personality of Dr Facilier, whilst retaining some knowledge of Tiana from his past life's memories

I have a really "crazy" theory. What if Tina's father came back via reincarnation or magic spell...as a non human. What if Ray is actually her father? He has all the qualities, mannerisms, and surrounds himself with a large group of loyal friends. Evangeline is supposedly the good fairy (in some theories), maybe she promised him a peaceful afterlife or a place in the stars, after he helps is daughter figure out he life.
tbh, this isn't that bad of a theory. though it could just as easily be Louis as the reincarnation. after all, Louis did help Tiana 'convince' the Finner brothers to accept her offer in the end and got to be part of the band. let's not forget that Louis dreamt of becoming human.
