ASUS have had a few ups and downs recently, Especially on the AM5 platform. Now with recent BIOS patches and AGESA updates, this motherboard is looking like a great choice for builders looking to create a powerful AM5 based platform.

I'm building a pc from 'pc specialist' The only mid range b650 options they have are the Asus b650 Tuf plus wifi or the Gigabyte b650 aorus elite .... I have RGB lights - not too bothered about wifi as I use a wired connection . The only thing putting me off the cheaper ASUS board is I've heard their RGB software is a cpu hog!?? Which board should I go for ?
Upgrading to this from my b450 plus. I’ve been trying to figure out the right 650 board to get and this video definitely closed the case
it is a good choice and other than the crappy armoury crate software it has been flawless
I bought this board on release with my 7700x and its been bulletproof for over a year! Its been completely stable and no issues to report, have also used this board in 7 other AM5 builds with same result. Board looks great, temperatures are excellent, priced quite nicely and its just a great B650 board.
Good to hear! i have had a very mixed experience so far with AM5 but this has been pretty awesome
@@mikesunboxing Yeah, you are not alone. For me its been trouble free with the TUF B650 PLUS WIFI with CPU's from the 7600 to the 7950X3D ( BIOS update recommended for X3D due to the sliiight burning issues :P )
But Yea, overall very satisfied.
i have a newbie question, im scared of the a few usb ports i see compared to the aorus or msi tomahwak, realistically how does that matter? am i really going to use so many on my daily activities? congrats for your build!
@@frankkvelasco7359I feel like I got plenty enough USB ports. And you usually have a few on the case too :)
If my ram speed is 7200mhz or ehatever and the motherboard can only handle 6420 will it crash or just run at 6420?
I love the TUF series of boards from ASUS. My current and previous boards are both TUF boards and will continue to use them in the future unless they change drastically.
Thank you for the review and breakdown of the MB You are helping me on my new am5 build
glad it helped

This is a great review. Thanks
thanks, very kind of you to say so
Interesting review and decent specification. About time prices became more realistic & affordable. Just not sure they got the socket right as so sensitive to pressure of cooler. Thanks Mike and Kath look forward to build video 🐈👍
I agree fully with you on that
The socket is the exact same as the higher-end ASUS boards. I guess you meant that AMD itself made a pretty bad socket for AM5? I know nothing about that, but maybe. :)
Edit: Ah. You meant the AM5 socket itself. I see now that sensitivity to mounting pressure is a well known LGA problem, it affects every single LGA CPU.
@@BenderdickCumbersnatch i wish they introduced the torque spanner like they did with threadripper
@@mikesunboxing Oh that is a beautiful solution. The way you just lower the CPU in a harness without risk of bending any pins by dropping it. And then tightening with a tool that can never overtighten. That's beautiful engineering.
@@BenderdickCumbersnatch beautiful but expensive to implement
Awesome video and very clear coverage and very useful info. I have this board and wanted to make sure I understand everything on it well enough. Also was confused as to what m.2 slot was best to use, and this cleared things up very well.
Glad it was helpful! Nice board hope you get many carefree years of use out of it
I just brought an Asus Tuf B550M-Plus (Non-Wifi) for $70 off which make it cheaper by about $30 then the board I was looking at the Asrock B550M Pro 4. Hardware unboxed did a review of VRMs on B550M motherboards a few years old now, and the VRM on the TUF were far better then the PRO. From the testing the ASUS Prime series tested very poorly. I won't feel bad for the computer store if ASUS drop all it's prices, I'm in country Australia so everything needs to be posted.
Looks to be a nice looking board. I too am waiting for AMD to release their new APU processors. Thanks for sharing Mike and Lady Kath. Take care everyone. Cheers
yeah the 8000 series looks very promising - IF the pricing makes sense and no silly reduced PCIe lanes on the processor
For anyone confused about the upload time and the comments time its because he put it in members only video first and make it public.
Yeah i know no one asked.
Great review! Extra points for responding to every comment!!!
I try
I bought the 7800x3d with the Asus Tuf b650 combo at Micro Center and it's been an awesome board. I've been wanting to do an Asus Tuf theme build with AM5.
nice! i am waiting for the AM5 BTF boards to hit the market
Any issues after a month I'm looking at this board for the same cpu
@@sausage5876 No issues yet. Everything booted up great after I build my pc. I was able to over clock my ram and turn on PBO.
@@sausage5876I had this board and 7800x3d for a year and its working good
Be careful the reset + & - is backwards. Also if you can't get the dram light to go away, put one stick in one gray slot and if it doesn't work try the other gray slot, if that one works put the 2nd memory stick in the other slot and both should end up working.
For my first time build, i chose this and a Ryzen 7 7700x. I have not build it yet, but im sure it'll come out great.
hope it all goes well
Same, I'm coming from the i5-4460 and GTX 970 to the 7700x lol

@@ReianoMusic I would wait. Only saying this cause I am also waiting for the 9000 series to drop in March. But I am sure it'll will be tough to get my hands on it.

Make sure you upgrade to the very latest 1811 bios.
I have this board since September and had to go through quite a lot of memory issues. Wouldn't boot with EXPO or, with later bios versions, would boot but ran very unstable. Had to run my 6000 RAM at 5600.
Ver. 1811 made it finally stable while also responding well to mild RAM overclocking/optimization.
i'll check mine now, think i was on the newest one at the time of filming
uff, it's sad to hear how painful memory on that platform can be.
I just bought a 7800x3d with 7800xt amd graphics on Black Friday (Nov/2023) and I later found out it has a ASUS mobo and I sort of got concerned. I have American Megatrends vers 1616 and date May/2023. The SOC CPU Voltage is like 1.2V so under 1.3V... the Cpu and GPU seem to not be overheating and everything runs pretty good so far. I am in Canada and bought a prebuilt from Armoury thru Canada Computers. So around April/2023 is when the AMD chip burn fiasco was right and looks like ASUS is taking things seriously now. Ohya, the ram installed is 6000 ....32 Gigs. I really don't want to tinker too much if it doesn't need...I should be ok or anything else I should know? Thank for the video explaining....
@@cybernit3 1616 won't burn your CPU, it might just not let you run your RAM with EXPO/XMP timings.
Fine if it does, but still, flashing to latest version is recommended and is easy as fk.
hey again mike, new sub (today!) and got here from your b650m pro rs review. this has to be one of the few 3m2 mobos with 2 of them on the cpu lane. i'm now considering this one instead of the pro rs because m2_2 and m2_3 are both 4x4 while the 3rd m2 on the rs is only 4x2 (also the rs is mAtx and the gpu will almost certainly cover m2_2 which will be a small nuisance to deal with if i wanna transfer data and take it out since i gotta also remove gpu then)
my main concern is now can i fully access all m2 slots on the tuf gaming or is there potential for the cpu cooler to block m2_1 while the gpu may cover m2_2 and m2_3? i'm probably going with the 7700 wraith prism which should be fine and i just from looking at it i also presume there is enough space under gpu to access both m2_2 and m2_3 without having to remove it (i own a 3060ti eagle 2 fan so it's not so fat and i don't really plan to get thick cards in the future)
side question if i install prism software to turn off argb i can safely remove the usb fan cable after right, just for aesthetic purposes since it will save the configuration directly in the cooler controller (i read smth about this online). thanks in advance

Whenever I happen to like a brand and think "Those are the good guys" I always hear about some major fuck up they did at some point. And they changed their behaviour not cause of moral reasons, but cause of the shitstorm and cause they are scared of losing potential sells. May it be Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Asrock, u name it. I only found out about EVGA when it was way too late sadly.
But hey, this is a nice board, Asus got scared shitless due to their horrible customer service being published, so it might be worth buying. Its just that, I would feel so bad supporting such behaviour by buying something from them, so I avoid them for a few generations 😅
But not everyone cares or watches a lot of hardware stuff. Thanks for the nice review!
for me the first things i look at are pricing, features, reliability and then things like the companies RMA process and lastly the companies track record. Go along a long enough time line and all companies drop the ball at some point, they are all bastards really and don't care about us at all, just money in the bank

@@mikesunboxing Wonderful, thanks! Will def get one asap :)
Great Video. I've just bought the B650-E WIFI version of this board, and got it installed in my first new build for several years. However, I've been let down by the firm I've ordered the CPU and GPU off, as they haven't shipped them yet so I can't complete my build. The major differences seem to be a different mix of USB ports on the I/O plate, giving 3 x USB 2.0 Type A (one with Bios Flashback), 3 x USB 3.0 Type A, 1 x USB 3.2 Type A and only 1 USB 3.2 Type C. There's also a revised layout of M.2 sockets and SATA ports, and no supplied heatsink for the 2nd and 3rd M.2s. All this for £155.
Apart from some cosmetic differences the rest appears to be the same as the version you have presented.
Hope you get the rest of your parts soon and get to enjoy your new pc

Hello Mike! Could you please advice asap?! Alixpress sales finishing up in 8 hours and I'd like to go with b650 / 7800x3d. Wanna get the msi b650 edge, which I saw you previously reviewed. I'm fond of memory manual tuning and Hynix A-Die kit but I'm reading horrid stories of people with extremely slow boot up times, i.e. just going from 4800 to 5600 to 6000 increases boot time. And also hearing about ethernet and wifi issues and USB overvolt etc...
Could you calm me down and reassure me the motherboard is still a good purchase? Other than tuning the RAM to 6000~6200 cl28/30 with subtimings I'm not going to do much maybe undervolt the CPU a bit and call it a day. But when manually tuning all the subtimings you end up doing reboots like a 100 times and hearing about 90 second boot up times sounds horrid.
On my Z790 Tomahawk, I'm impressed with boot up times even after a cmos reset or applying a new config.
Boot times can be reduced quite a bit with bios updates and context restore etc. 30 seconds or so to get to windows desktop is pretty common now

The problem is though those drives get extremely hot and most of them are not dependable right now so in a way I'm going to wait anyway... I don't think it'll be too long before I end up building a new kit anyway cuz with the prices of CPUs being high The ones I like right now are going to be a lot lower as soon as the next generation is released and I know both AMD and Intel are working on that hard. Right now Intel has some serious cooling issues... It's not just the drives that are on fire (so to speak basically) The CPUs get really hot too I don't know if I want something running that hard in my room adding heat to it cuz I live in a warm place basically a tropical environment. On the plus side though I picked up a cool 27-in ASrock 240 hz monitor fer like 130 bucks and a cheap desk for 60 so I'm pretty damn happy regardless. I can't believe though I can't really use the 3000 Kingston kit it was so beautiful (rgb) I mean initially I'll use it but I'm going to replace the memory pretty quick probably... i have this mb but i cant see my second hard drive that is connected in m.2.2 slot. any idea what settings has to be changed from bios to get this working?

Hello on this b650-plus motherboard, all m2 slots could be used at once correct?
yes they can
@@mikesunboxing thank you so much for the reply
@@mikesunboxing at the 11:10 mark i got confused but thank you for clarifying that all 3 slots of nvme m2 will work , thanks once again for the reply
I hear that many motherboards that have a PCIE gen 5 m.2 slot will reduce the primary GPU slot from PCIEx16 to PCIEx8 when the PCIE gen 5 slot is in x4 mode. Do you know if this board does this?
this board doesn't have any PCIe gen 5 slots or ports so it isn't an issue
@@mikesunboxing It has 1 PCIE gen 5 m.2 slot though...When the M.2_1 slot is running in pcie 5.0 x4 mode, does it then cause the gpu slot to go from pciex16 to pciex8? some other motherboards have this limitation. Can be checked in GPUZ.
is the Asus Drama fixed?
do idea really, they are still a holes to deal with RMAs and will likely still but out dodgy drivers and BIOS over time, but at present all seems okay
@@mikesunboxing fingers crossed
Hello mate, is this board compatible with 7950x3d? Thanks!
Yes, absolutely
cant find the non wifi one. please anyone help
seems to be region specific or OEM maybe
ok thank you@@mikesunboxing
is the wifi6 any good? was hoping it would be wifi6E
yeah the wifi is good and fine for most people. you also need a router that can do wifi6e which many people don't have
@mikesunboxing
In fact, I do one a wifi6e router
Thankfully =)
I mean the antenna doesn’t come with updated drivers … so you’d have to use an Ethernet cable to even get it to work lmao
I can install 3 m2 on all ports and works all of them?
Yes
should i get the TUF b650-E or the TUF B650-Plus WIFI
i liked the plus wifi personally and it has a better VRM i think
That's my question aswell. What are the main differences between those 2 boards? They seem almost the same
Is It good choice for 7800x 3d processor ?
yes that is a good choice
question...hdmi 2.1 isn't supposed to be 4k 120?
i think so
@ on the box it says 4k 60hz
Would people say these are reliable ?
I just bought an msi tomahawk b650 it’s faulty and I can’t return it :( so have lost out on £200.

This board support and cross fire to run 2 same graphics cards?
sort of, but crossfire is no longer supported in most drivers so pretty pointless to be honest
@@mikesunboxing if I add same graphics I can't merge them both and utilities? As this is the prime use of crossfire. Then how can increase speed of gpu I am using 3060ti 8GB now
@@victorynath almost no games support SLI or Crossfire now, maybe 3dmark and some other benchmarking utilities but that is really it. If you need a faster GPU, then the only thing you can do is get a faster GPU.
Will A Ryzen 7 7700 none x pair with it
yeah i ran that pairing for ages
@ I have an 4070 12 gig too with Kingston, fury DDR five ram
Will this board work for the r7 7800x3d?

Hello sir,
I have asus tuf b650 plus wifi, and I updated bios to 1811 and after updating a black prompt up with message "Bios is updating led firmware " and kept boot looping, I left my pc turned on for two days , it kept boot looping with same message.
I tried everything crashfree, flash back, clearing cmos and different versions of bios.
Even I changed ram, cpu, ssd and gpu but no changes
Please sir help me if you can
what sort of looping? bios and ram training loops or getting to load windows loops?
@mikesunboxing it give message "Bios is updating led firmware" do not shutdown or reset pc.
Even it doesn't give Bios f2 or delete option.
I thought this might be ram or ssd or processor issue but it was motherboard Bios issue.
@mikesunboxing even it doesn't allow to go in bios
sounds like you might need a trip to our discord chat server@@GuidanceAndBlessing
For the life of me, I can't get this motherboard to work with all four ram slots occupied. Using G.Skill Flare X5 F5-6000J3038F16GX2-FX5 And ryzen 7800x3d CPU. When using only 2 ram modules in a2 and b2 it does work like a charm though. Fairly annoying.
yeah that is a real downside of 4 ram sticks in this platform in its current state
Can support 8000 and 9000 series procesors
Yes that is very likely
i`m really split between this board and MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI. This one has 3 m.2s but MSI has 8+8 power while this has 8+4
yeah it depends which is more important to you. Personally i prefer the MSI BIOS and rgb and fan control software. but either way they are both decent boards
can i put a 9950x in this board?
yes that should be possible
This or B650M Mortar wifi ?
that is a different class of board but either is a good choice
Diff between
( New updated version )
B550 vs B650
Asus tuf gaming motherboard
Only Ryzen
sorry i don't understand what you are asking here
I built a new machine last summer but had to limit myself due to funds. I needed a machine that could run STARFIELD and KERBAL SPACE PROGRAM 2. In a few months I should have an inheritance coming in and if the market looks good I'm quite possibly going to be building a newer more powerful machine that will be very close to NO HOLDS BARRED. But I'm not getting crazy. Under $5K U.S.. This board would not be a contender because I would want at least 2 (preferably more) GEN 5 M.2 slots. The one I built last summer is an AM4 with 4 GEN 4 M.2's. I'm only using 2 of them currently (again, funds) but I know they are there and waiting. The anticipation of what is to come in computer tech is... exciting!!!
Inheritance boy
@@HelloThere-xs8ss Is it wrong of me to get wistful about other unknown relatives dying and leaving me an inheritance? Things that make you go, "HHhhhhmmmmm?"
@@charlesballard5251 I worked and saved for my new PC, man-boy.
Never really understood why some boards have more than an 8 pin, honestly I think its simply marketing.
8 pin CPU should be good for something like 265w alone.
well my i9 13900k will draw over 330w so maybe they are on to something
@@mikesunboxing Yeah, that's a good point but the AM5 socket is only capable of 230-ish watts.
Literally F ASUS and their MB's or their whole ROG line had a x670e mb and it was one of those one' that had the overvolting problem that led to m 7900x3d demise. Never using their trash again.
Sorry to hear that
Any recommendations? Because everywhere I look it seems like every singular existent motherboard is trash to everyone no matter AMD or Intel lol
A lot of people have had problems with the ASUS line of motherboards. You can look it up on here and listen to the problems other content creators have had. Not only the problems with the products, but the customer service has been commented on as terrible as well. This was the board I was originally going to use in my build but went with a MSI board instead to avoid the headaches.
lol i went the other way from the msi to asus. So far it is a much better experience stability wise. God help me if i ever need an RMA
Hey, many are complaining about the bios issue with the msi tomahawk B650 wifi

Hi Mike great reviews, I have a question regarding BIOS updating as I have just purchased this board and am awaiting delivery
I had a look at he BIOS updates on the Asus site and they list 8 different updates do you normally just select the last one to install or selectively just pick one or more of these BIOS updates
Thanks in advance
how do i know how much power my cpu needs? 8pin or 4 pin or both?
8 is a minimum really the extra four is for very high core counts or extreme overclocking
Be careful the reset + & - is backwards. Also if you can't get the dram light to go away, put one stick in one gray slot and if it doesn't work try the other gray slot, if that one works put the 2nd memory stick in the other slot and both should end up working.
