    One of the hardest parts about learning things on your own isn't *learning* it, its learning *how* to learn it. Cheers man

    About 10 years ago I forced myself to install only Linux and simply figure it out. Best choice ever. I'll never look back.

      I would like too, but the Win file browser is way better than the Linux file browser. I tried to do simple tasks, as I would do with the Win browser, did not work. E. g. to add a column with "mp3".

    • @MrDaddyv123
      @MrDaddyv123 4 роки тому +26

      @@tyrewald9083 simply not true. Ubuntu may be the most beginner friendly distribution, but I can assure you that a simple "mkdir" will create a new folder in any linux distribution. Some of the gui functions are thinner in linux, but that's the point. Once you're comfortable on the cli, it's not even a comparison for customization options.

      I should add that in enterprise environments, especially remote desktop oriented operations, Windows is definitely the most user friendly and Administration friendly.

    • @tyrewald9083
      @tyrewald9083 4 роки тому +1

      @@MrDaddyv123 Using a file browser is quicker, than the cli. You can do most things on the cli, as it was common 30yrs ago. Nowadays a file browser and gui are standard. It is all about a smooth and fast work flow. That is the reason of the enormous success of MS! Otherwise most people would use Linux seemingly without cost. I completed a Linux course, but use Linux just now and then.

    I took your Vague advice and started using it as my Daily Driver and I've learned so much by doing that.
    That's honestly what I'd tell people if they asked me how to learn.
    but then again there are other baselines, if that doesn't satisfy you, you could always for instance watch UA-cam Videos about it but lets be honest NOTHING teaches as effectively as making the deep dive.

    One of the most helpful videos I've seen on starting with Linux. While being very tech savvy, was never really interested in learning Linux until recently. And by learning Linux I don't mean how to install a popular newbie distro and navigate around the default DE, which is what most "linux for beginners" videos are about. As you said yourself, thank you for pointing to the right resources.

    it was a great video.
    just one note. in Arabic we say: شكرا على المشاهدة.
    and in French we usually say : merci pour voter attention.
    thanks.

    one big tip I have is to strive to make things better. If you feel some task, system, or some component of the Linux universe ( including open source software ) is unnecessarily difficult, I find it helpful to assume "there's gotta be a better way".
    Turns out, tons of people all over the planet have already gone through the frustration. There's probably a solution, or at least it's documented well enough to save you weeks of time.
    Not only that, but the system's guts are exposed. It is whatever you want it to be. Tools you didn't even know you needed are one sudo apt-get away.
    So there are tons of little tips to learn and nuggets of wisdom to spread, but if you just remember that solutions are just a Google search away you are set for life.
    oh and please back up your dotfiles.

    Amazing. I now have a lot of material to go through. I appreciate you compiling this. I just Installed Linux Mint, wiping my hard drive, took the plunge, and have been using it for about a week now. Looking forward to studying your recommendations!
    It felt pretty good being able to fix my "broken" live boot flash drive by manually unmounting, etc etc. Until I had a working USB drive again. And then promptly flashed Manjaro to it and put it on my laptop. I'm officially done with Windows.
