      Absolutely. My learning experience was to dive in with no knowledge and start clicking on stuff. To be sure, my learning experience was unique, because I burned my bridges in the transition from Windows...I knew I'd do without a computer entirely rather than go back...my version of Fedora did not come on live media. It was either go forward, or do without. So I went forward, hit every stump in the woods, and it was worth every drop of blood, sweat, and tears. I owe the Linux experience I have today to those baby steps, and I look back on them fondly.
      I have said before and I will say again, there are life lessons in the Linux transition. It is like moving out of your parents' house for the first time. It's scary. There is no one there to hold your hand. You are now expected to do a lot of things yourself, that were once done for you. But the freedom...ah, the freedom. No one gets to tell you what to do. You make your mistakes, take your lumps, and you are accountable to no one but yourself.
      SO worth it. I will NEVER go back to Windows.

      I'm not above, "making errors". The trouble with coding is that you could be stuck for years trying to figure out what's wrong. No good. And to say, "if you wanted to, you'd slog through it", is disingenuous & points, again, to YOU having an affinity. I REALLY want to understand Linux Mint & Wordpress. I've been at it for a couple of years and keep getting people saying they can teach, but have no idea. Dammit!

    Chris, you're awesome in my books. I started in DOS 3.0 and been fairly in depth with PCs since. About 3-weeks ago, decided to take the Linux plunge with my HTPCs, liked it, and now running a Debian distro on my work desktop. The learning curve is vertical and your videos are a Godsend, SSH, fstab, Grub rescue, etc. Already playing with Arch in a VM and liking it. I wish I could break with Windows completely; however, I work for a global company and they're in bed with the latest Microsoft technologies, my spreadsheets are far too complex to run online or in Libre Calc. So far, a Windows Pro VM is helping to bridge personal preference versus programs needed for work. When I retire, I am soooo done with Windows.
    Again, thank you, love your passion for Linux.

    if you want to learn a whole lot about how linux goes together, Gentoo or Linux From Scratch are pretty awesome. Linux From Scratch has no package manager by default and you basically install the base system little by little on your own... gentoo has a package manager, but everything is still done pretty manually and you compile all the code from sources as you go so it's built specifically for the hardware you're running it on, nice and lean.. I strongly recommend doing this on a second computer (not your primary one), at least the first time. these distributions are basically the opposite of a well-supported robust linux desktop operating system like mint or pop os but damn are they fun to mess with to figure out how things work. instead of buying a prefab house that is guaranteed to be fully up to code and designed the way a professional designer envisioned it all pretty and pre-furnished like you get with pop os, mint, and ubuntu, with LFS and gentoo, you're handed a vacant lot, rough blueprint, a box truck, and a home depot credit card to set things up exactly the way you want it with your choices of how it goes together, your choice in color of the drapes, the design of the fridge, the internal layout even is all up to you.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 4 роки тому +2

      Gentoo or Linux From Scratch will show you all of the sights but they'll never explain the bigger picture to you. Why we compute! Essentially it is all about the data and interacting with it. Searching it, collating it, logically operating on it, etc.

Install nextcloud, a Plex server, or play around with Fedora Silverblue, use a rpi for a personal diy project.

    Back when I first learned Linux, documentation was spotty and you had to read a lot of man pages and just figure it out as you went along. It's far easier to learn now with much better resources out there. That said, the documentation from the Gentoo project and what I could find on Slackware at the time (this was 2001-2002) is what helped me through it. Nowadays, we have lots of people like Chris here making videos on the subject and a combination of their videos along with all the Wikis and books out there are the way to go. There are college classes for those in school, but those can be hit or miss so I'd only recommend looking at them to folks still in college. Everyone else, save their money and learn it with numerous free resources out there.

    I'll second the other posters that say use it every day - as your primary OS. Problems you run into are a good thing - those are excellent opportunities to learn while working through them - remember that and don't get frustrated. I've immersed myself in Linux over the past few months and consider myself a pretty moderately advanced user by now (though I'm was already an advanced DOS/Windows user so that helped.) Have done several Arch and a few Kubuntu installs on several computers ranging from ancient to fairly modern, each bring their own challenges. I'm a glutton for punishment so I started with Arch, but that turned out to be a good idea as I've learned a lot.

    Last night I was googling how to add an icon to Plank that presses the "super" key, (because GNOME), and since it's such a weirdly specific problem, I didn't find anything outside of xdotool, so I started trial-and-erroring my way through the frustratingly multi-layered problem.
    The solution?
    1: Write a script for xdotool, (xdotool key super)
    2: Create a .desktop shortcut to the script
    3: Create an empty .dockitem file in the launcher folder and input the path to the .desktop file
    (Instead of writing the shortcut first and then saving it as a .dockitem, because if you do that, Plank will just outright delete your shiny new .dockitem on launch, which I did what feels like 7 times, because custom .dockitem files have a different format than ones made through Plank, _because_ _of_ _course_ _they_ _do_ )
    4: Restart Plank and/or computer (again)
    5: Repeatedly ensure that the shortcut works, because I'm not going to just click it once
    6: Breathe a sigh of relief
    7: Go to sleep, because it's 3 in the frickin' morning

      I do everything sadly, Lol. I use a wordpress for a CMS and generally like to create a draft post to outline my video. Then keep refining it as I am writing the video outline. I then publish the post and the video within a couple days of each other and then usually do a final edit to the post to round it out. It adds a little bit of work, but I generally stay in markdown mode and can jam through a webpage creation with SEO optimization in about 30 minutes.

      Yeah, would be nice if CTT figured that out. Say backup current installation to a zip file (or is it tar?), which app, then go to some other hardware and restore it. And, have different hardware -- like 2tb harddrive to a 256gb SSD or something like that. Then, instruct us on what problems we would have if we had a certain hardware and restore to different hardware. It's almost impossible in Windows unless you use certain apps; I've done it, but it often causes more problems than its worth -- so, I just have step-by-step instructions how to get everything back together.

    • @PoeLemic
      @PoeLemic 4 роки тому

      Or, even be nice if he shows the backup process in full, then deletes lots of files in system directory -- then restores the OS back and proves to us that it works. Might be a good few videos on how this works. Then, restore to different computer maybe -- if possible. Again, I think I've said this on other videos, because it is something that Noobs (like me) will experience and get frustrated by it. Especially adding a new SSD (say nvme) and moving to it, then getting the boot to work perfect. Probably easier now than when I tried it years ago, because I got overwhelmed and just stopped "killing myself" and stayed in Windows. But, now, I'd be willing to venture out (as I get ideas and motivation from CTT's motivating videos) to move more to LInux. I sure could use MORE SIMPLICITY in my life than Windows, because I'm always troubleshooting problems (especially at home).

    I suggest making a video on how to download and install software in Linux. That was my main issue because some software aren't found in the software manager and those are often out of date so then you have do download something on the website. Then you are most often given a couple of commands to enter and/or several distro specific packages to download or sometimes an oddball like flatpaks or appimages. Most Windows users are only familiar with wizards and as a new Linux user it took me some time to get the hang of installation on Linux.

    If people want to use the Debian wiki, and like me, don't turn off the VPN for _any_ site.. there is a workaround.. two, actually. One, use Tor Browser, *OR* , use StartPage search engine, and look up the Debian wiki, and next to the link, is a link for "Anonymous view." This will bring you there successfully. Now, just drag that link to your bookmarks bar or desktop, rename the link "Debian Wiki," and you're done. That link will take you there every time. I don't know if this interferes with their ads, or if they even have them, but they did it to themselves. I've avoided that site for the past year, but just found these two workarounds on Reddit. They both work.

    Would installing Arch in a VM be a good replacement to "practice" in case you don't have an extra PC to test it out with?

    • @dingokidneys
      @dingokidneys 4 роки тому

      Absolutely! I run up lots of different OSs in VMs because it's easy to do, you can take snapshots to roll back to in case you break things badly, you can set up different network setups (NAT, Bridged, internal) so you can do different things with them and if you decide you don't need it, just blow it away and roll up something else. E.g. I wanted to play with building a router (haven't done it in many years) so I did a very basic Debian install on a VM with two network interfaces, bridged one to be my WAN and set the other to "Internal Network". Then I set up the firewall and installed dnsmasq. Set another VM to use "Internal Network" as their only network connection and fire it up to test the router VM out. Works fine. Now to break stuff!!
      Lots you can do with VMs. They are usually the first place I start.

    • @TheArilysOtter
      @TheArilysOtter 4 роки тому

      @@dingokidneys I'm planning on dual-booting Windows 10 and Manjaro once I get a 1TB disk (I'll leave Windows on my current 250gb SSD), and I was wondering if I could use the VM to iron out any hardware-related kinks that might pop up, since I have an intel/nVidia GPU (it's a laptop).
      I'd also take the chance and do an Arch VM and follow the stuff that Chris has on his site, so I can be a bit prepared when I do make the switch.
      My "problem" is that I'm not sure if the VM will also use the actual hardware, or if that'll also be virtualized.

    • @dingokidneys
      @dingokidneys 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheArilysOtter Virtualisation generally emulates a certain hardware setup so you can't actually sort out potential hardware problems of a bare metal install within a VM. You can often, depending on the VM platform, use GPU passthrough to give a VM access to a particular graphics card, but as I understand it, you need two graphics cards installed in the host system and while the host is using one of them (e.g. builtin) you pass a second card through to the VM for its exclusive use.
      As for dual booting, I think separate drives for the separate systems is a good idea. I understand that Windows plays better with other systems these days but in the past you always had to make sure to have Windows installed first and then install Linux allowing the Linux boot manager to control OS selection. Always be careful setting up dual boot as you can end up with a system that won't boot into either system until you do some magic with external boot media.
      Proceed with caution and do plenty of research and if you can get a hold of a second sacrificial machine, practice on that before doing anything potentially hazardous to your primary machine.
      Good luck.

    • @dingokidneys
      @dingokidneys 4 роки тому

      @@TheArilysOtter Thinking again, it is often really quick and easy to replace the HDD in a laptop; remove a screw, pop the old one out, pop the new one in.
      Perhaps you can just swap the Windows HDD with a fresh one and install what you want on that. You're working with the hardware directly and if you break it there's no effect on your old system. Just reinstall the new system again from scratch.

      Try Manjaro in a virtual machine. Perhaps use VirtualBox. It doesn't matter if you break the virtual machine. You can also keep snapshots of known good setups so if you install something new and break the system, you can go back to the snapshot.
      When you think you know Manjaro well enough, you can then put it on your real machine. If you still like it. :)

I haven't figured out yet what is going on (I have to eat first) but whatever it is, it sucks. The error message was that Manjaro can't load the kernel modules. I have the latest kernel as far as I know (5.3), I also tried out previous versions (5.2 and 4.*). When I am not hungry anymore I will look on the Manjaro-forum, then in the Arch community and if i can't find a solution I will just try out a live-USB.

      Ubuntu has the best community forum, but as far as the manual goes don't use the Ubuntu Wiki, use the Debian wiki instead. The Debian wiki is much better as far as layout, better search results, and better presentation. I'm not saying the Ubuntu wiki is bad, but the Debian wiki is better. That Debian wiki is so good that if you need a specific lib for a application build you can search the specific library and it will tell you which package you need to install via APT to get that library file.

      VirtualBox actually provides the infrastructure within its setup so you can play with PXE booting. You drop the image/installer files into ~/.VirtualBox/TFTP along with the kernel and initrd and some other pxelinux specific files, set the VM to boot from the network and it will work. Enough to start learning with anyway. It actually took me quite a while to get a system to boot.
