No, It doesn't sound great, but the energy is impossible to measure. This makes it such a fantastic performance. Nope, Never Robert with a guitar. Until this video.
Nope, never saw Plant play guitar before. I gotta admit when I 1st started watching the hall of fame vid. I was like “what is this?” What are you talking about, Otis? But as it goes along Neil’s energy level picks up the whole band ‘till they’re just grinning and have a great time! A really fun jam, thanks Otis! Love you too, brother…
I never noticed! Mike Damone giving advice to Mark Ratner. Cameron Crowe would have known that so I'm thinking that they used a little artistic license in using Kashmir. From a contextual standpoint, Kashmir is really a great choice for that scene -- all that tension building. 😄 Fast Times is a great movie. Sean Penn steals every scene that he's in. And My Favorite Martian as Mr. Hand??? ROFL. Happy New Year Otis!
we opened for Led Zeppelin twice here in Toronto, Plant loved to jam on guitar with the locals in soundcheck Another great video Otis. We're thank full for you!
Danny, big fan! you always amaze me with your stories.i always catch your bluz show driving home from playing with the band saturdays.sadly don't go into the city much anymore
“… even when he’s messing up he’s going to mess up all the way.” 😂 I’ve had people tell me I remind them of Neil. I bet it’s that “enthusiasm.” I don’t mind, I’ll take it! Thanks for the heads up on this video! Going to search for this now.
I remember that same thing when I saw fast times as a kid. Still love that movie. Great video of Neil and Zep. Neil is forever in the playlist. But I still listen to everything. Your tour looks great. Looking forward to your new album. Looking forward to west coast Otis!!
Neil is the bomb. His spirit was similarly on display at the end of the Jakob Dylan documentary about Laurel Canyon-he didn't agree to an interview but he let them film him rocking a guitar solo + he was much older than he was in 1995...
Happy New Year Otis! I always took that Zeppelin scene in Fast Times as the kid getting everything wrong on the date and screwing up in every way (even the song choice).
I love Neil too. His albums never seem to get old to me outside of the handful of songs I got over exposed to on classic rock radio. I always get a kick out of sharing his rockabilly record with the shocking pinks to unsuspecting friends.
Hey Happy New Year Otis and Amy! Ugh, what an inauspicious beginning, I'm afraid we're gonna be steppin' in a LOT of it this year, maybe next, too...! I thought of that Guy Clark song, Queenie's Blues: Queenie's getting buried, It's time to dig the hole; New Year's Day in Santa Fe Broke mean and it broke cold. Seems like Neil's collab'in' with everybody through the years, Zep, Devo, REM. Even commandeered a Dylan gig once, and Bob's like, Sure, Neil, whatever...
I haven't seen this clip in years, but Jimmy was outplayed by Neil AND Robert. Not rehearsed at all, and fantastic for it. Jamming isn't always the best art, but compelling none the less. Thanks Otis!
Otis! You are the man. I simply love your stories, music, and especially your whole vibe. You are a nice oasis in these troubling times… Although wiki doesn’t list your age, I’d guess we are close. I was born in ‘66 and also saw Song Remains at a midnight movie in about 1982. I was a Southern rock bass player, but loved Zep, as most did. I too immediately noticed the Fast Times discrepancy, and for years blamed it on idiocy, for lack of a better word. Now I’d guess it was possibly intentional. I could see writer Cameron Crowe liking every aspect of using the controversial title of that unnamed album that was known as “ZOSO” in my neighborhood. But then what song to have kick in? Kashmir is such an in your face iconic riff, and works perfectly. I’d guess different songs from 4 were tried and didn’t have the right immediacy. Maybe someone like a gaffer suggested Kashmir? Then a few more tokes and Crowe says “Yeah! We’ll go with Kashmir and no one will notice!” And if they do….It might cause peeps to talk about the movie. Pure conjecture of course 😎🎸🎶
Happy Saturday, Otis! Great video, as always. Neil is a force of nature. Love his body of work. Glad he reconsidered on Glastonbury. I hadn't seen the Zeppelin/ Young video, either. Or maybe I've forgotten it... Fast Times is my mom's favorite movie... Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a close second. Thank you 🙏🏻🤍
Fast Times 1982. I was 16. Dudes on Ludes should not drive. I had moved past Zeppelin at that point and didn't notice the flub. But I've always loved the polyrhythmic quality of Kashmir. Looking forward to new OG music!
Thanks for sharing. I thought the song turned out great with Neil playing lead. No one plays guitar like Neil. Have a blest happy blest new year. Shame on neighbors who can’t pick up after their dogs.
Another Great Video , You always find Something Cool and positive to Share . I stopped Listening to Zeppelin when I was 18 , There's a LOT of Great Music to Explore .
Ok I just rewatched it for the first time in 30 years and it was significantly better than I remember. I guessed I must’ve originally been comparing it to the studio version of Levee
Thanks Otis! I liked the story. I got to see Young & Crazy Horse at the basketball stadium in Dallas around 1986. Garage band tour. He played with that exact focus and energy you talked about today. So great and fun to watch. A true artist and sound and word sculptor in action real time. Great memories!
Otis, all the best to you in 2025 - thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one that was miffed by the mistake re: Led Zeppelin IV vs. Physical Grafitti!
Fascinating. In reference to the 'Fast Times' point, apparently, this is because Cameron Crowe, who wrote the screenplay could not get the rights to any of the music from Led Zeppelin’s fourth album. Thanks as always.
I once stepped in dog crap when I was 5 years old and tracked it through the house. I had never seen my mom so pissed off before, I still remember it. RIP Mom.
Yea man. I first saw this about five or so years ago and wow! Outstanding performance. Robert Plant appears almost smitten by Neil. Jimmy Page, Stopping Neil at the end to shake his hand. Michael Lee was the drummer. RIP
Love the channel...but the scene in Fast Times was meant to be a joke. Cameron Crowe wrote that as a spoof for Sean Penn...when you watch it, it makes sense with the character of Spicoli 😂
I remember seeing that---they were content to let Neil do his thing. And not too long after, Neil referenced them in his lyrics to "Downtown" off his Mirror Ball CD he made with Pearl Jam: "Jimi's playin' in the back room Led Zeppelin on stage There's a mirror ball twirlin' And a note from Page Like a water-washed diamond In a river of sin Goin' down like a whirlpool When you get sucked in"
I always remember (accurately, I hope) the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert on TV, which featured dozens of musicians performing his songs, and then at the end everyone was on stage to sing a final song. Everyone but Neil Young was standing there calmly singing and some strumming guitars. Neil was rockin out on his guitar, putting his whole body into it! Maybe not tactful, since Bob was supposed to be the focus of the evening, but you can't deny Neil's spirit! I don't pay much attention to the RnR Hall of Fame, so I didn't know about the Led Zeppelin performance.
And there was Clapton and George Harrison watching from the wings looking on aghast as Neil was just playing a one note solo of which they were not impressed by.
Yes, Otis I have seen that movie many times I was a 17-year-old singer Shelbyville high school and I know exactly the senior talking about legendary scene in the movie.
Watching it again and still blown away by the way Neil just steps up and starts shredding. Like, "Outta my way. I've got something to say". Honestly, the only thing better with LZ is Celebration Day, Live @ The 02 Arena. Led Zeppelin at their finest in that performance from 2007 I believe. Hands down. If you have not seen it yet. Turn it up. You will be amazed. Right outta the gate with the opener from their very first album. Good Times bad Times. Jason Bonham. His poppa gotta be proud as F.
Hey Otis! Love your videos, man! Regarding the scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High: The character, Mark Ratner, playing the wrong Zeppelin album to begin the date he’s been thoroughly coached on, is the comedy of the scene. His “cool” buddy Damone tells him to play side one of LZ IV, but Mark’s not cool, like Damone. At the start of the date, Mark immediately flubs the opportunity, and plays the more angular Kashmir, which doesn’t have the desired effect. Instead, it brings on an awkwardness that lasts the rest of the date. Just my take. 🤘
I’ve never seen Neil not all in. Check out his performance with the Pretenders “My City was Gone.” As Tina Turner said, “we never ever do it nice and easy. We do it nice, and rough.”
It sounds REAL. You nailed it, Otis. I'd give 100000 shredders for ONE moment of REAL. Of course, I've been down with Neil (solo) since '68 (BuffSprg before that) and LZ early '69. (I am O L D) (PS saw LZ live 1970, Memphis). Otis, I hope you know Plant and Krauss music. Plant has always insisted on going his own NEW way, not resting on his laurels,, not recreating previous creations. Plant over the years=amazing. The real. Well, like Neil. This is ART.
“Moving In Stereo” by The Cars when Phobe Cates removes her Top Coming Out of The Swimming Pool, Otis! Saw Robert Plant’s First Solo Album Tour at Sunrise Musical Theatre in 1991 to Start his U.S. Tour and He Played An Acoustic Guitar on stage with his Amazing Band that Night! Went to See BlackBerry Smoke at Pompano Beach Amphitheater in November! Loved That Band! I had A Free Ticket with a Dear Friend Bass Player!
Morning, Oh the Midnite Movie, Woodstock, The Kids are Alright, Let There be Rock, The Song Remains the Same, Rocky Horror, good small-town fun! Didn't see Fast Times until a couple years later, thought it was Low Brow, but it was stupid funny! And yes, my friends and I caught the Zep mistake, the rabbit hole was smaller, you just had to look harder! Gotta check out the Neil/Zep Video. Let me know if you ever Harvest some Neil in a bottle!
Well I’ll be, I hadn’t seen that performance either. So I just went straight to it after watching your vid, good stuff, I might have a vague memory of seeing Plant playing an acoustic from some old zeppelin clip. Like you I listened to so much Zep back in the 80s (and into the early 90s a bit when I discovered a record shop in Bloomington that had a bunch of Zep bootlegs) that I just don’t listen to them much anymore. By the way the drummer is Michael Lee, he played on most of Plant’s solo records and then on the 2 Page/Plant albums.
Find JPJ playing "Going To California" with Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch. I think it may specifically be the David Rawlings Machine. It's pretty much the only Zep song i didn't out of by age 22 or so. They do a really nice cimfortable job. Dave sings lead and Jones plays mandolin.
It's been said that Down by the Seaside from Physical Graffiti was written because Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wanted to write something like Down by the River. I like the way they'd snag licks and lyrics and try to spin it into a whole new entity by pushing the studio as an instrument to it's limits. Neil often has a completely opposite approach. I like to think of the Dead Man soundtrack as the perfect codex for understanding his music, it's like the stories of his songs and the yearning of the music are faraway boulders crashing in a canyon, and by the time it reaches you, there's a melody through the echoing.
Fast Times was the first time LZ allowed one of their songs in a movie, and they only did it as a favour to Cameron Crow, who had been on tour with them when he was writing for Rolling Stone. They wouldn’t let him have anything off IV for the movie, but they were much more generous by the time he made Almost Famous
I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High when it came out on VHS and have no memory of that scene. About the only thing I remember about the movie is Molly Ringwald was cute.
Well at least you didn't fall in it. Neil Young always 100 % that's the first time I have seen RP play anything once again you have given me something I never knew
Otis, you have the glass is half full mentality. Some people would consider “steppin’ in it” an omen for things to come, but you look at it as “gettin’ that shite behind you”. I love it! And no, I never even heard of the video. I’ll be checking it out after this. We know 2025 has the potential for being dog shite, but like Neil, we need to be invested in making it a good one. Peace.
A quick Google search says that it was a publishing issue. They couldn’t get the rights to 4 but they could for Kashmir. The more you know (insert your own rainbow here).

Happy New Year! i just finished snow shoveling and ice melt and am inside warming up with coffee and Otis podcast. Thanks for being here.
Thanks for your videos. They’re quite good especially the ones on Bob Dylan.
Thank ya kindly! ❤
Tonight's the Night. I haven't listened to Zeppelin since the 80s. Neil is still a fresh wrapper, always.
Thanks, Otis! I always enjoy your videos. Good luck with your new album and safe travels!
I never noticed! Mike Damone giving advice to Mark Ratner. Cameron Crowe would have known that so I'm thinking that they used a little artistic license in using Kashmir. I'm 61 and I remember having that exact same reaction to that scene in Fast Times.
“… even when he’s messing up he’s going to mess up all the way.” 😂 I’ve had people tell me I remind them of Neil. I bet it’s that “enthusiasm.” I don’t mind, I’ll take it! Thanks for the heads up on this video! Going to search for this now.

Buon Anno Otis, I enjoy listening to your voice in the morning with my coffee and pipe. Love from Sardinia
Thanks Otis . Happy New Year All
❤
Neil is the bomb. His spirit was similarly on display at the end of the Jakob Dylan documentary about Laurel Canyon-he didn't agree to an interview but he let them film him rocking a guitar solo + he was much older than he was in 1995...
Happy New Year Otis! I always took that Zeppelin scene in Fast Times as the kid getting everything wrong on the date and screwing up in every way (even the song choice).
Yes, that’s exactly the point. Ratner got it wrong and put the wrong song on. His character would mess up a wet dream!
Came here to say the same thing. Thought that was what was funny… Rat getting it wrong. Don’t think it was an error on the movie production part.
I generally don't watch those things either, but there is one worth seeking out, it's While my Guitar Gently Weeps with an amazing solo by Prince.
I love down by the river
Such a great jam
Happy New Year… hope it’s a good one… !
Wishing you all a peaceful year…🕊️
Just checked it out. Very fun! 🎸⚡️🤘
I believe the drummer is the great Michael Lee who we lost way too soon. Check out the No Quarter DVD, it is fantastic
Micheal Lee was incredible, I saw him play with Echo & the Bunnymen in 1997, he was a game changer.
Hello Otis and Amy. Be well in this new year.
Same to ya! ❤
Happy New Year and best wishes to everyone ❤🙏☮️
I love Neil too. His albums never seem to get old to me outside of the handful of songs I got over exposed to on classic rock radio. I always get a kick out of sharing his rockabilly record with the shocking pinks to unsuspecting friends.
Yeah, and Trans too. That version of Mr Soul is amazing.
Enjoyable as always Otis! Have a wonderful weekend! Much love to you!
Hey Happy New Year Otis and Amy!
Ugh, what an inauspicious beginning, I'm afraid we're gonna be steppin' in a LOT of it this year, maybe next, too...! I thought of that Guy Clark song, Queenie's Blues:
Queenie's getting buried,
It's time to dig the hole;
New Year's Day in Santa Fe
Broke mean and it broke cold.
Seems like Neil's collab'in' with everybody through the years, Zep, Devo, REM. Even commandeered a Dylan gig once, and Bob's like, Sure, Neil, whatever...
Happy New year Otis, you really stepped in it this time ! ✌️🙂

Happy Saturday, Otis!

If I had no choice..and had to be someone else.. I’d be Neil before Jimmy.. Neil seems to be invested.❤️
But think of all of the H you’d miss out on.
Ok I just rewatched it for the first time in 30 years and it was significantly better than I remember.

That will wake you up and bring clarity to your morning. I never walked in the yard the 14 years we had a dog.
Happy New Year Otis!
Happy new year to you and your beautiful bride. Hope you’re doing well. God bless.
Fascinating. In reference to the 'Fast Times' point, apparently, this is because Cameron Crowe, who wrote the screenplay could not get the rights to any of the music from Led Zeppelin’s fourth album. Thanks as always.
You nail it on the description of the video.
Happy New Year, Otis! 🎉
Neil understands that playing music is all about having fun. Thanks Otis.
Outstanding. Who would have thought. Thank you Otis. 🤪
I once stepped in dog crap when I was 5 years old and tracked it through the house. I had never seen my mom so pissed off before, I still remember it. RIP Mom.
i had the same exact experience watching Fast Times.
Sounds like the tune gained momentum, like the levee breaking...trickle 2 flood. Thx.
I love how Robert Plant had to tap out Neil to wrap it up
Yes I was also shocked that the van scene track was wrong
Not Jason and I never knew about this collaboration
Totally agree about Neil Young’s commitment and the garage band jam sentiment
Thank you Otis
Have a good one, brother 👍🏻🙏🏻
Happy New Year Otis! I’m gonna put on some Tonight’s the Night Live at the Roxy.
I caught the Zeppelin thing in Fast Times too LMAO! I think I saw it in the theater when it first came out.
Yea man. I first saw this about five or so years ago and wow! Outstanding performance. Robert Plant appears almost smitten by Neil. Jimmy Page, Stopping Neil at the end to shake his hand.
Michael Lee was the drummer. RIP
Happy New Year 😊
Great videos Otis! I enjoy your music as well, how about a video of the guitars you use? I’m a guitar nerd.
enthusiastic at the wrong moments that's a keeper too
Love the channel...but the scene in Fast Times was meant to be a joke. Cameron Crowe wrote that as a spoof for Sean Penn...when you watch it, it makes sense with the character of Spicoli 😂
Nice Thank you!
I remember seeing that---they were content to let Neil do his thing. And not too long after, Neil referenced them in his lyrics to "Downtown" off his Mirror Ball CD he made with Pearl Jam:

Led Zeppelin on stage

Like a water-washed diamond In a river of sin

better to burn out than to fade away ! Neil crushes it !
I always remember (accurately, I hope) the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert on TV, which featured dozens of musicians performing his songs, and then at the end everyone was on stage to sing a final song. I remember that scene from Fast Times. I was 13 and I knew. There was one other scene that I remember a little better though…
The Cars’ “Moving in Stereo.”
Thanks for the heads up, Otis. I had never seen this video before. All it needs is 15 - 20 more dancers, and a little autotune wouldn't hurt. 😂😂😂😂
Yes, Otis I have seen that movie many times I was a 17-year-old singer Shelbyville high school and I know exactly the senior talking about legendary scene in the movie.

Hey Otis! Love your videos, man!
Regarding the scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High:
The character, Mark Ratner, playing the wrong Zeppelin album to begin the date he’s been thoroughly coached on, is the comedy of the scene.
Otis, I still crank LZ now and then. But you’re not alone, I’d never heard of this event until now.
Thanks for sharing Otis. All the best to you in 2025!
Off topic .. but I just watched Roger Waters In The Flesh tour for the first time in a while. Amazing show, over 9 million views. Highly recommend!!
I had A Free Ticket with a Dear Friend Bass Player!
thanks
Drummer is the guy who played with Page and Plant. I think he was Plants drummer in the 80s and 90's
Wish I could grow a beard like Otis ✌️
❤
Ya just gotta….PUSH..😁
👍
Dylan once said of Neil “he’s always passionate”, or something like that.
I may be guilty of being enthusiastic at the wrong times.
Don't know about y'all, but I think JP Jones' bass looks pretty cool. Matches his clothes and coiffure perfectly. Sounds good too.
I'll be playing some Neil Young tunes tonight with my girlfriend's band! Starting off the new year strong!!
Fast Times was the first time LZ allowed one of their songs in a movie, and they only did it as a favour to Cameron Crow, who had been on tour with them when he was writing for Rolling Stone. Damn! that WAS a good Zepp session
I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High when it came out on VHS and have no memory of that scene. About the only thing I remember about the movie is Molly Ringwald was cute.
Our Dad always said that stepping in dog crap was good luck..👍🏼… But people who grow up poor sure say a lotta funny stuff…✌🏼😁
Well at least you didn't fall in it. Neil Young always 100 % that's the first time I have seen RP play anything once again you have given me something I never knew
Happy New Years Otis, stepping in dog shit is good luck!
Happy New year to you too, Frank! ❤
The late Michael Lee was on drums.
Yes we’ve all been enjoying this video for years but thank you for making this video just the same.
Imagine making Led Zeppelin your backup band!
Peace.
Michael Lee on drums, the only one wearing a tie.
A quick Google search says that it was a publishing issue. They couldn’t get the rights to 4 but they could for Kashmir. The more you know (insert your own rainbow here).
Atlantic Records vs Swan Song? Superhype vs Flames of Albion?
The song used in the movie may have had to do with what they could get the rights to. Those things can change after the scenes are shot.
