  • How to use Pourable Marine Foam
    We used 2 pound density pourable foam to add flotation and rigidity under the deck of a 13 ft skiff. Learn how to best mix, what size hole to drill and how to warm up the under deck space for best results. This 2 lb density expandable boat buoyance foam not only adds flotation but also structural rigidity but can also act as insulation and sound proofing.

    Update : After filling a 18 foot boat was about three quarters complete and then someone from a boat group suggested using one gallon zip loc freezer bags to mix and pour then cut the corner and squeeze out the foam. This was a game changer ! . I saved cost of measuring cups and used clean water bottles as my measurement then poured part one then part two into the bag and rolled it to mix. This gives much more time to mix as there is little to no air to start the process and I was able to squeeze almost every drop out of the bag.

    I am restoring a 1964 Johnson Sport 135 Evinrude. Tri hull . Omg ! The floor was a little rotten and very wet it sat outside for 20 yrs. I just stripped out floor and the foam and some small repairs on the hull but watching your video I can go tackle the floor. Good information.

    Thanks for sharing sir. The amount of possible upgrades you can use this stuff for is endless. Its always been my intention to add this to the inside of my aluminum hull to prevent it from sinking if I ever holed it going up some river somewhere. I bet it makes a usefull sound barrier too.

      Most aluminum hulls are only single sheets without a void that could be filled with foam. You could do it by adding a non structural raised deck. You are 100% correct this stuff would offer a great sound barrier

    What an excellent, interesting and informative tutorial this is!
    I particularly liked that you kept the fibreglass plugs and refitted them with self adhesive tape and weighed them down to keep the foam from expanding out of the hole.
    This is clearly beneficial as the foam adheres to the fibreglass plug (which presumably is then further reinforced and sealed with epoxy or thickened epoxy when fully cured).
    The other advantages of this is that no foam is wasted and there is less time, effort and materials used to clean up protruding streams of cured foam!
    Other than the foam used to show viewers the expansion rate at the beginning of the video, this an especially good method of managing uasge and minimising wastage.
    I believe that where the liquefied foam mixture is being poured into small, closed cavities one would not plug the expansion, as unlike in this large, open cavity, the expanding foam has nowhere to go and may well fracture the plywood joints as the confined foam continues to expand! Subscribed.
    I was originally thinking of using several 8' x 4' x 6" closed cell foam boards laminated between sheets of marine plywood to form a buoyant platform on which to mount a Slidavan, but this method is definitely worth looking into.

    My plan is to try and pour this stuff into an inflatable sponson for a RHI that keeps leaking in one chamber. It is 24" in diameter and 5-feet long.

    Great video. As an added note it is not just air temperature but product temperature also. The temperature of the product should be above 70 degrees to help promote the proper chemical reactions.

    Super curious question, & I think it would make for an awesome video.
    That is if it can be done.
    Anyway I was curious to what you would think. Do you think that this could be poured into a raft? I’ve always wondered if I did this kind of mixture & poured it into an Air Raft if it would expand & take the shape of the raft & then harden. I’ve even thought about if this would work with those kids blow up air swimming pools, or those air hot tubs.
    I first had this idea when I worked construction with my uncle back in the early 1990’s. I was using spray foam insulation & thought it was the same as marine insulation. Then my uncle told me the differences about them.
    Anyway I would very much like to know what you think.
    Also I liked your video, it was very well done & informative.

      I thought of this too, as I tried to fill the ring of a pool with great stuff and found that type of foam needs open air to rise and cure. This, if it does in fact, do well in closed spaces would be cool to fix leaky rings in pools as it adds buoyancy. I ended up filling the ring with pool noodles and little Styrofoam beads then sealing with duct type & silicone. Lasted the summer but man was she ugly.

    Thanks for this well made video. What are your thoughts on using this product to fill the pontoons of a houseboat? I have a 1967 houseboat with old, steel pontoons that leak. The pontoon is separated into compartments, with each compartment having about 30 cubic feet of volume. Would the urethane foam fill the whole compartment, seal the leaks/holes, and remain waterproof over time and not absorb water?

      It would fill the compartment but it would squeeze out any of the leaks. I do not think its made to be in direct contact with water all the time. I would fix the leaks then fill with foam

    Great! thank you. Just what i was looking for. Question, what was the condition in inside the compartment before your poured? I will be attempting to do this on a 23 ft power boat that had a water logged hull and cracks that have now been repaired.

      Since I had to cut out the deck to remove the wet foam was able to clean the entire surface with acetone and sand with course grit disc sanding wheel. I wanted the new foam to bond to it

    I want to fill up thin walled pvc for dual kayak pontoons. Going for a hobie island adventure pontoon and trampoline.. how much 2lb density for 2, 6 inch diameter 10 foot long pipes?

    Maybe you can store both urethane buckets in fridge, to increase the pre pouring time during warm weather

    Greetings. This is a GREAT video. Taping the plugs over the holes is great. Question... Im restoring a 13 ft classic Boston Whaler. What was your process cutting out the floor? Did it come out in pieces? It looks like you removed, then reglassed the seams before foaming. How thick is the floor? Was there wood under it? Mine is a 1972. Thanks much!! Steve from Canada.

      I had a Dell Quay dory so whaler might be a little different. I was able to remove large sections of the deck, Only wood was a couple stringers. Deck was thin fiberglass it only became rigid once supported by the foam

    Great video very educational I’m currently restoring a 78 sea nymph aluminum I stripped her out foam was was no good, but for the most part the aluminum was solid. Now I’m trying to figure out how I should go about ?? I was think put the floor in section tilt her upwards much as possible and pour it. If it fills up the section immediately add another section to the floor tac it down repeat. Any feedback for me? would highly appreciate it.

      Never worked with aluminum but would think you might need more than a tack weld. This stuff will push itself out any opening. if it can not find a way out it will buckle the floor upward. Im assuming you want to stay away from drilling pour holes in the deck. Probably a good Idea because it would be hard to weld each closed with out burning the foam. I think your idea to tilt forward as much as possible is great. Only thing I would do is complete deck welds instead of tacking

      @@DIYeasycrafts i will not be using aluminum for my deck I’m going with ply 5/8 maybe even 1/4 being that the foam once poured will create a solid backing reinforcing the flex on ply. Now that you know it’s plywood any different advice? Thanks for the response. Fish on!

    I have a idea to make a raft out of 18 gallon bins, I want to use foam to seal the tops of the bins to the bottoms then bolt them to the bottom of my raft.
    I know this would work for keeping water out.
    But if i filled them to the brim would it increase the buoyancy of my bins?

      No foam will not increase the buoyancy but it would prevent water from leaking in and filling the bins. If leakage it would maintain bouyancy.

    Question: What would happen if you misjudged the amount of foam required to fill the void and put too much foam into the void?

      The excess foam will take path of least resistance. It will push out the predrilled fill holes .

    So just a dumb idea...but would this work for filling like an inflatable chair? Lol I know sounds ridiculous but my kids cat is gonna pop this cheap chair that he is so proud of buying.

      No I do not think so. Foam ends up being very hard and its a l;ittle expensive for that type of project

    Could you mix this expanding foam with styrofoam for a cheap and quicker filling?

      I guess but Styrofoam does not have the same durable characteristics as closed cell foam does. It would just be a space filler that might break down or absorb water over time.

    I have a few questions i have an aluminum bass boat i want to fully foam the entire underside of my front deck im worried about the foam expanding too much and blowing out the bottom or sides of my hull. Can you add any insight to this am i correct or incorrect in my concern

      The foam will take path of least resistance. If you have pour holes you could always let it overflow the hole and then trim it back and patch. (not as easy with aluminum).

      The foam not only adds floatation but also rigidity. This boat actually has very thin fiberglass. It needs the rigidity

    It seems like foam is not a permanent solution for filling voids as there appears to be common to absorb water.

    Adding foam doesnt "add flotation to your hull"... it actually makes your hull heavier, and cause your hull to float deeper below the water line. It's only "additional flotation" if you crash :)

      thats why people should only do this if the boat is designed with foam. sealed chambers and scantlings and all that... not as an addition to non foam hulls. (it'll mess with the waterline and efficiency)

      !!!! if you damage your hull on a coral reef water will get in but if your hull is filled with cork sheet which is extremely light how water can get in & fill the hull ? theres no room ?

    So outside of the obvious of making a hard job harder. Why isn’t anyone using plastic bags to put foam in hulls to protect from water saturation. Even closed cell foam will become water saturated in a couple of years with no where for the water to go. This question is more for unsealed decks than sealed of course.

    This stuff is seriously toxic in use and can emit toxic fumes ongoing... not for inside your living area on the boat. Also flammable and emits deadly smoke when it burns. Just sayin..
