Can't believe i paid £10 for my SH-101 back in the early 90s, i spotted it in a second hand shop, it was hidden under about 6ft of junk but i recognised the blue casing and dragged it out. I asked the Asian shopkeeper "how much" and he replied "no sound" meaning he thought it didn't work because it made no sound, i said "i'll take it for spare parts" and offered him £10, he accepted and i ran like the wind! Got home plugged it in and it worked perfectly! Still Does! x
Congrats!! You can't really find stuff like that anymore. Sure, there's still the super rare find but that's it. The internet has turned secondhand into a seller's market and everything gets pre-filtered before it hits the shelves to go on ebay for a lot of money or to specialist shops. Only people with money can play.
Nice! Watching your video and trying to recreate the sounds with the SH-101 plug-out of Aira System-1. Close enough, I can say, for Sys1! I remembered how years ago I refused a good offer for a SH-101... disassembled!
My Most Wanted list of Roland gear for me to buy before I die: 1. TB-303 (DevilFish mod) 2. SH-101 (Nova mod) 3. MC-202 4. JUNO 106 (KIWI 106 mod) I already have the TR-909, 808, 707 (3), 626, MV-8000 (2), & Boss DR-110. :-)
With only 1 VCO and one ADSR, don't expect to get a lot of complex and subtle sounds out of an SH-101. But it still makes a great Bass synth, for simple analog bass sounds.
Forgot how much of a toy these were. It was always a second best buy if you didnt have the money for something better. Nice video thou n it brings it all back.
Tolle Beispiele in diesem Video! Danke!
When I was in the airforce in 1989, the library had a back room with a bunch of old crappy guitars and stuff that nobody cared for. And there was also a 101. I took it back to our barracks, plugged it into my boombox and toyed with it for weeks. Stupid as I was, I should've taken it home - nobody ever asked about it. Damnit!!!!
The Roland SH-101 Synthesizer from the year 1981 is a classic monophonic analog synth. Here can you find the full SH-101 playlist with single sound demos and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy. The SH-101 playlist ----> ua-cam.com/play/PLe08Lbpy8pPZ1-LlZGmPafyvdArYOJyFB.html
Hi, could you measure a resitance of the pitch bend potentiometer on the grip for me? I mean at minimum and maximum postion, thanks? Measured on the larger tip 3,5mm pin.
Do you have a time machine? That 101 looks newer than some of my current keyboards. Also, I love seeing what can be done with the simple sequencers from certain monos from the '80s, when used by individuals with skill, such as yourself. I think I read farther down the comment list about you making a Linn Drum video. . .I second that percussion.
Thanks for your time, very nice and I loved it, but where's Madonna? Or Cyndi Lauper? or Kylie Minogue? These three defined the 80's... Liked and subscribed right away...
First track was I Feel Love. But Moroder didn't program the bassline. It was Robert Wedel, a German Krautrock producer/engineer. That's why it sounds like Berlin School or Krautrock. It's not really Disco music.
***** Weird. I play it one half notestep higher. Anyway, nice tutorial even though I don't own a Moog Source. I think this bass is remodellable on many other synths though.
In 80's folks used to call it SHIT-01, it was selling for $40-100 and nobody wanted this synth and then for some reason it became cult classic...humans are strange,LOL
1985 I bought 2 of them brand new in the boxes with mod grips, straps etc for $150ea from Goodman Music in LA. They had a giant pyramid of them on the showroom floor. Nobody wanted them. Bought my Juno-106 that same day for $777 :)
"Der Mussolini" sounding twice more aggressive that the original...is good! ...ain't "I feel love" actually from 1977? Let's pretend it was Digital Emotion's "Humanity" ;)
I hear you, however real analog translates better in recordings. As subtle warmth or saturation enters the sound chain on and at different levels, the ear perceives a "warmth" that just can not be duplicated on the vst level at this time. It is one reason Korg is so popular with its Volca series, real analog sound at cheap prices.
Pure Ambient Drone I can't really comment on the SH-101 interface because I dont know if this synth generates sounds via DSP or voltage. However I do know that all korg products waveforms are DSP (software) generated or sometimes roms which is the main way soft synths exist. Other companies like Moog, Doefer, dreadbox, etc. are straight voltage.. Given that, if the VCF isn't 12 pole - 24 pole that "fatness" isn't their. Not to mention most vintage gear that has a VCO/VCF/VCA system overheats and loses tune (which is another reason why keyboard players hated vintage gear). Personally, there are some VST's that are darn near close to that like U-He Diva, Bazille, Sugar Byte factory, etc in their respected fields.

Are there any classic rock songs that the SH-101 can be used for? Like a Pink Floyd song for example, or a Led Zeppelin song?
@@jameslanclos568 no. More a synth pop synth
I guess I'll have to get creative then!@@retrosound72

Oh yes, the famous LOL-HS
Haha
😂
Best - But only in RED 😜
I Feel Love... so simple, yet so powerful. Genius
Laurence Vanhelsuwe :)
They dont make em like they used to, a vintage synth's sound is second to none

***** hmm no idea. a matte rof taste. its not the same.
***** Definitely not the same. But Roland did a good work for a digital when recreating these vintage beauties.
This is prefection! One of my favorite machines all time :)
Pablo DeMode :)

Did you get a 303 with Devilfish mods by now?

Love the 101 Bass sound
I was so hoping for Styx in this. Thank you sir.
:)
Was not expecting you to bust out that DAF riff. Nice tastes!
+Tyler Nichols :)
Forgot how much of a toy these were. It was always a second best buy if you didnt have the money for something better. Nice video thou n it brings it all back.
yeah, have to admit it sounds "just ok"... i'm sure it'd fun to have though.
I was impressed enough when you were playing a red SH101 (same as my much missed version) but then you played DAF :-) Excellent stuff :-)
LIAPEI :))
thank you!
Jo,das Teil geht ab... Danke für das Video!!!
great vibe thx for that vid
like that sound from DAF greetings from germany
+Lui da funkmasta thank you! :)
Tolle Beispiele in diesem Video! Danke!
Danke für den netten Kommentar :)
This is so awesome :)

Great sounds.
+Machiwoomiapoo :)
Wow you make me happy...
:))
I Feel Love. Yes!!!!!!!!! Giorgio must be proud.
awesome man
+merlin barnett thank you
WELL PLAYED.
liked the slow building up of "I feel love"... Giorgio still rules!
Jean Bonnefoy thanks
Jean Bonnefoy sounded like Devo's working in a coal mine at first
I Feel Love!!

Germany seems like it has some pretty awesome musicians... Greetings from the land of the Mormons. Great channel!
IcyBluesOfDeath thank you! :)
greetings back from the land of many electronic music pioneers
Schön dass ich dich bekehren konnte. :)
***** Das musste sein. :D
I feel love! :)
Der kann diesen Hackepeter Bass. :D
***** Ist ja auch ein Analogsynth. Da kommt dann auch richtig was raus;)

my father in law has one of these. i lowkey should just take it.
get it fukn stolen son!!!
nothing "lowkey" about a missing 101
dont be suprised if youre disowned!
"disowned" by the father in law is not a big thing if you keep the wife and the synth
iBEENART yes if you have the means of picking one of these up I highly recommend doing so they're so choice
Or just the synth!
You should have tried the Los Ninos Del Parque sequence by Liaisons Dangereuses
awesome!
:)
Is there a modern synth out there that you could recommend that would allow me to sequence like that?
+incadove korg minilogue
+incadove Arturia Minibrute SE (& Minibrute original with firmware update) and Microbrute are pretty similar.
Echte klasse!
Stefano Papaleo :))
So cool
Sean Yardley thanks
Awesome
:)
could you please explain or give an easy set of instruction on how to do the "I feel love arpegio"??
osakaben10 check the keys at the beginning ;)
ok....
:o) den hätte ich auch gern ! Sau geiler Synthesizer
Arthur Schnitzler ;)
die 101 hat schon was, da haste recht.
Thanks for your time, very nice and I loved it, but where's Madonna? Or Cyndi Lauper? or Kylie Minogue? These three defined the 80's... Liked and subscribed right away...
awesome

Midnight express, great job! Long live for Moroder!!!
José Luis Santorcuato Tapia thanks!

redeyesinc der hat keine doppelbelegungen. einfachste bedienung.
I wondered if the newer SH-01A sounds the same, ?? I want this for my next album as well as that Juno-106
Buzz the small SH clone sounds good.
does the Clone have the same sound as this one ?
not the same but similar sound
Anyone know the notation for Tanz den Mussolini?
What happened to "Chase", close but it is not ;)
markusmala haha special edition ;)
I wanted to ask your advice as I'm about to purchase my first vintage analogue. So OBX or OB-XA?
Chris Davey both synths are not for beginner.
very rare , very expensiv and not very reliable. check the prophet 08 or juno.
But I just love the sound. Can't find anything that sounds like this. The unison in the OB-XA is amazing. I already have a Kronos X.
1:15 tanz Der Mussolini!! :D
Very good. Next can you do Giorgio Moroder using only analog step sequencers, same way as the originals.
speedtribejp ;) haha
thanks
The Blue Monday sequence... [me turning around and start playing].
+derLPMaxe :)
in the original made with the Moog Source
ua-cam.com/video/n9Y6_Vw3S-o/v-deo.html
***** Weird. I play it one half notestep higher. Anyway, nice tutorial even though I don't own a Moog Source. I think this bass is remodellable on many other synths though.

+Maxi Deni times changed... I ever loved the 101.
1985 I bought 2 of them brand new in the boxes with mod grips, straps etc for $150ea from Goodman Music in LA. They had a giant pyramid of them on the showroom floor. Nobody wanted them. Bought my Juno-106 that same day for $777 :)
Hell yeah, DAF!
:)
hey, could you do a video on the intro to poison arrow by abc?
LOL High School.
Do you think anything can get close to that Oberheim sound?
Chris Davey sure not
An Oberheim it must be then. But OBX or OB-XA, which would you choose if it could only be one?
Hi Marko, would polysix make a good first synth rather than OB-XA?
Chris Davey more the JX-8P.
Cool I'll have a look on ebay. Do you have one?
Chris Davey I had two.
Don't know if I mentioned I have a Kronos X too. Just looking for something to do the analogue sound.
The SH-01a can't even compare to this beast.
Is that a flashlight in your pants, or does the music make you happy?
"Der Mussolini" sounding twice more aggressive that the original...is good!
...ain't "I feel love" actually from 1977? Let's pretend it was Digital Emotion's "Humanity" ;)
Victor Dulepov yes the original is from the year 1977 and Bronski Beat cover this track 1985.
thanks
Blau kommt noch. Schöne Feiertage!
No 70's Tangerine Dream. ;)
gotta get myself a sh 101
well, no quite exactly IT - i would like to know what synths used Power Glove for Far Cry Blood Dragon soundtrack
Peter Gunn notes are incorrect, but a good demo!
moroder used a moog not a sh 101 ;)
fuck yeah DAF
That Giorgio Moroder - Chase needs work. Cool synth.
Giorgio Moroder would be would proud, playing ,I Feel Love and Chase from "Midnight Express".
Cus band ;)
it sounds pretty limited tbh
some are good some the keys are way off, the key of the original, but interesting to hear
john elton yes this is no cover ;)
I feel love... Meh
Difficult to get it to sound really good .... And the sound is well like that.
Zeitloses design!
Absolut
Kraftwerk....
;)
dude this 101 can be used as a 303
sure
Software can NOT touch these! NO WAY!
LMAO ok
I was referring to the warmth and character not the emulation. Lots of VST's can "sound" like hardware but they are thin in comparison.
Pure Ambient Drone warmth? You mean saturation? IDK why that matters to people when that saturation usually get taken away with filtering.
I hear you, however real analog translates better in recordings. As subtle warmth or saturation enters the sound chain on and at different levels, the ear perceives a "warmth" that just can not be duplicated on the vst level at this time. Sorry but I feel love was 1977.
onsese joo this is the Bronski Beat cover ;)
Oh, yes, the most prominent band of Britain around London and Smash Hits.
