    Almost the entire album of Daniel Lavoie "Tension Attention" released in 1983 was programmed by Daniel DeShaime on the first LinnDrum available in Canada at the time. Producer John Eden (Der Kommissar) decided that it was so great, he recorded all the drum tracks before recording the other instruments. All they had to do after that was to follow the beat. :D

      You Spin Me Round (Like a record), Relax and Flashdance...What a Feeling were all done on a Linn LM-1 Drum Computer. In You Spin Me Round, the cowbell was tuned high and only the LM-1 had all the sounds tunable. The cowbell on the LinnDrum can’t be tuned. A public FAVOR, please, since there are many stupid people in this world who apparently throw tantrums without a reason - please don't complain that there's no Prince in this ten-song demo video. Besides the fact than with ten songs there's not space to cover everybody, the main reason is that the most iconic Prince songs didn't use the LinnDrum, but the Linn LM-1. When I will get an LM-1 and make a video about it, you can be sure that there will be Prince songs in it. If you're not familiar with the LM-1, please look it up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linn_LM-1

      To be fair (re: Human League), though Martin Rushent has said it was LM-1, Phil and the girls don't help matters! :P They routinely insist that it was the LinnDrum, when _all_ documentation shows it was an LM-1. The LinnDrums had *_yet_* to be introduced at that time. • @jascooly
      @jascooly 3 роки тому +2

      I agree I would love to see them do that, but I think they wouldn't see (kinda rightfully so) a market in cloning sample based gear because that kind of beats the point of sample based gear + there is not really a profitable market in something that can be done by paying 5 dollars for a sample pack in contrast to cloning an analog circuit which is so specific and cost inefficient that nobody want's to take that route (so there is a market).
      Please don't read this as a that typical super bitchy "ik know better" comment's 😅. That wasn't my intention if it happened anyways.
      Believe me I would throw my money at such a machine. Or even a machine that only replicates those beautiful designs/colors/unpractical keys etc. It sure would add a hell of a lot of character to any homestudio. Guess I'm just kinda bringing my own hopes down to prevent disappointment :P

If anyone knows of somewhere that sells a cd of samples that has Linn Drum, plus Roland TR808 and 909 on there too would you let me know where I can get one please? Cheers 👍

    • @JamieClark

      Jammy Git if you haven’t found it yet, check out SamplesFromMars website. Once or twice a year they have a sale when you can buy their full collection for a huge discount ($25? $15? I forget) and it has soooooo many machines (and synths) sampled super clean, also thru a desk w some saturation, and some of them also onto tape w saturation. Super usable in the way the original machines would be. Nothing highly processed, nothing LoFi or “house”, just the sounds of those real classic boxes recorded so we don’t have to. Only problem is digging through those mountains of folders!!

It includes the famous and very specific Prince When Doves Cry drum sounds. Check it out on-line if you're interrested in the LM-1 sounds. In regards to Take On Me, A-Ha swapped out the original ROMs, which sounds different from this. Relax was done on a Linn LM-1 as the claps were tuned a little lower. You Spin me Round (like a record) was also done on the LM-1 as the cowbell was tuned to a higher pitch.

    • @bertsteemers5860
      @bertsteemers5860 6 років тому

      Relax has crash sounds tho, So I think they actually did use the LinnDrum instead of the LM-1. (plus, relax has 3 different tom sounds, the LM-1 can only do 2).

    • @hardcorehouse
      @hardcorehouse 5 років тому

      I’ve used them extensively, and have always preferred the Linndrum. Similar sounds but some are better, beginning with the kick that is one of the best kick samples ever made. LM-1 has only a few extra sounds, the kick sucks in comparison and the only real advantage is individual tuning which is no big deal. I had Linn modify one of the extra slots for tuning, can put sounds in there if needed.

    • @akira808state4
      @akira808state4 5 років тому

      Bert Steemers The Linn LM-1 could be modified to include the crash and the ride sound. Relax used the LM-1 also. I can tell the different between the LM-1 and the LinnDrum. On the LM-1, all sounds were tunable, whereas the on the LinnDrum, only the snare, slapstick, and the congas were tunable. The LinnDrum did have higher quality samples, and was $2,500 cheaper than the LM-1. Between the two, if I had to make a choice, it would be the LM-1.

    • @hardcorehouse
      @hardcorehouse 5 років тому

      That entire Relax album is Linndrum heaven. Anyone who knows these sounds can immediately ID the kick, which is arguably the best kick ever on a drum machine. LM-1 kick no comparison, and isn’t what’s heard on most early-mid 80s records.

    Many artists swapped the ROMs out for their own sounds with this machine because it was so easy (each sound in a separate IC). Because of this it's not always obvious what songs this unit was used on. For example there is a video on youtube with Pat Mastelotto showing his modded LM-1 used on Mr. Mister tracks.

    Didn’t Prince have both of them in the 80s, even if he favored the LM-1?
    Every since the late 90s when I first learned what is the model was, I have fantasized being able to get one (or possibly Vee DMX, Drumulator, DrumTraks or RX5 and find a way to play it live. My current drummer/percussionist source, the Yamaha DTX multi 12, includes RX five samples in its memory bank. That has proved for me at least to be more than enough.

    How about "Maniac" by Michael Sembello. Sounds like LinnDrum but could be an LM-1, not sure.

    I've been geeking out on stereogums articles about billboard number 1s, and they're often saying who programmed the drum machines etc. Would be good to know who the most prolific linndrum programmer was? Or similar for other kit.

    This is great. Don't forget Prince, who would have had a very different sound without Linn from 1982 to about 1988...

      +Ted Lewis Hi Ted, thank you, - would you please look up the difference between LM-1 and LinnDrum - if you read the comments you'll find that nine-ten people have already posted the same comment. Prince's most characteristic sound was from the LM-1, which I don't have yet.

      Not at all, actually. Most of the first 80s was Linn, Oberheim and some 808, and most of these were just straight out of the box sounds..the sounds then were better than today’s, didn’t really need much already very punchy.
