great video. used to ride my 85' cr 500 in the dunes in Oregon. that soft shit will wear you out in a hurry! and no you don't have to ride a cr 500 on the powerband the whole time to have a good time.
All the people telling you to pull the throttle stop, and quit babying it have probably never rode a cr500. Awesome video man, you've earned a subscriber.
LEGSAVER TIPS FOR CR500! (and ego saver) Before you ever try kicking it, turn the petcock on, tip the bike over to the left side a ways until you see gas coming out the vents to get gas in the float bowl and to the jets. Then give it 6-8 slow turn overs to prime gas into the crankcase, ports, and chamber. Then get the motor to near tdc (the hardest spot on the Kickstarter, when the motor has the most compression) then ratchet the Kickstarter up to the last kick and give it one healthy kick all the way through to the foot peg.
I had the pleasure of riding a 1986 CR500 in Glamis a couple times. Let me tell you there is nothing like the rush of triple digits on a dirt bike in the dunes. We called it the Dreadnought. Because you Dread not having to start the thing.
im 18, 5"7, and 120 lbs. I ride a 01 cr250r and damn do i love it. It doesnt matter how big you are. Just remember that you dont have to use all of the throttle! the bigger the bike the better! It will take some getting used to but trust me you wont have any more of a hard time as long as you get enough seat time in it and go a little harder at a time. I used to ride my dads 250 when i was 6 years old. like i said just take it easy and you can handle ANY bike.
clean sounding CR.....here's a tip, after owning 3 i learned to drag my rear brake while gassing it at the same time in 5th instead of chopping the throttle in sand, this reduces head shake when slowing, sounds crazy to the uninformed but works....i used to ride Glamis 20 years ago....keep roosting ;)
banshee01ful I've actually managed to ride a kx500 2 weeks ago and i definitely agree about you saying the torque on those things.. i literally had to pin the throttle haha
Itakeyouthere, I have also cold seized a bike from taking off like that.. my banshee I never knew till my dads friend told me. I stopped doing it and I'm good now, it has been four years and nothing bad had happened yet so I believe him. By the way nice cr500
Your pace is fine. I've ended up in the hospital twice from "opening er up". I highly recommend riding well within your limits and not the limits of the 500.
Awesome bike man those CR500's are blazing fast. People think that 125's are so fast until they hear about the CR500 and then people are like "Holy crap man CR500's don't exist" but they do...again awesome bike im looking forward to getting one when i turn 18 from 3 years from now to fix up as a resto bike.
Looks good man. I ride a kx450f, and a CR500AF. People that are talking shit have no idea how much power that really is. 500 is like a 900 4 stroke. Just insane. Do have to get your 5th gear fixed though! lol
i went for my first time just over new years, its alot of fun but can get boring really fast if you are with a slow group. and if it rains then its definately fun because the bike just sticks no matter how leaned over you are (long as your on the pipe)
He is right though its not all about the power and how big your bike is its all about your riding experience, how long you have been riding, and most important your riding skills.
5th gear on a 500 is stupid fast i personally don't own one but ive ridden my grandfathers 89 cr 500 and i got 4th and that was fast enough. i ride cr 250 and 5th gear on that bike is wild, 5th on a 500 is something people don't talk about for a reason respect the bike before she eats you up and spits you out. respect to all the 500 riders. looking to take over my grandfathers 500. see you on the riders forms take care be safe and what ever you do don't whiskey throttle
man you had some killer set ups and you just chickened out man come on don't make me regret watching this I want to see you set that 500 free she is begging for it!
Well it seems nice that one doesn't have to worry about hitting a tree the whole time compared to woods riding. Messing up in the woods means possibly hitting a tree or going off a cliff. In the dunes it seems there's a higher chance of colliding with someone else than running into something.
2-strokes need a certain pipe tuning for each adjustment. What the 4-strokes offer, a 2-stroke can be made to have lots of top end, lots of mid, or lots of low end. If a 4-stroke guy says my crf goes faster, a 2-stroke can always be made faster but then it'll lack the low end and be peakier :D
Someone's salty that you're out having a blast on an awesome bike is all. Keep ripping it up. My first street bike was a GPz 750. If you're not uncomfortable riding it, keep it up. Only way to learn is to ride regardless of what you ride.
I have a 97 CR500. It can be a prick to start. Now that the decompression grooves are gone It prefers a small quantity of flesh on the footpeg and a deep kick.
can someone who has alot of experience at glamis (and similar) tell me: what is the system that keeps people running into each other? i have seen many videos and keep wondering how its done. do you use spotters, or just well established routes?
alright thanks man, would saging an shaving the seat an putting a lowering link make a big difference in the height of the bike? an haha true i would jus want to get one foot completely down, what bike do u hav?
Well take into consideration how much you weigh to make the bike Squat down. And you can always pull down the suspension and that should lower is a little
it really dosnt matter how old, tall, or how much you weigh, its really about experience, but me personally i would go with the 250 4 stroke i got my 05 kx250f when i was 14 and im 17 now and i love it to death, my friend recently bought a cr125 and he out grew it in 2 years it was to slow for him i would jump straight into a 250, but be careful and get to know the bike before you go crazy
250 4 stroke!!!!!!!!! its a super fun bike u can put around on it and wen u want to go fast u can and if u like to race fuck yea i love 4 strokes.... but thats what i like u do wat u want to do..... oh yea and 1 more thing if u go from the xr100 to a 2 stroke 125 u wont com out of 2nd gear because u might be a lil scared from the power and tork it has but its all up to u dude
obviously he is taking his time... the bike is not winding out at all haha come on guys. but question where are you?, is it hard to ride on sand?, because i would like to try it?.
No people, a 500 2 smoke is nothing like any four stroke. It is a whole nother animal..If you don't have good throttle control, the powerband will rip your ass straight off.
It's harder to control in general. I'm not sure if you're trying to disagree with me or what, but it takes talent. You cant just hop on a dirtbike and expect not to crash or go over the bars the first time in the dunes.. Or even if you're experienced you're still guaranteed to go over the bars every once in a while. That was the point. And being on a quad is easy, you just have to look out for idiots in the desert.
great video. used to ride my 85' cr 500 in the dunes in Oregon. that soft shit will wear you out in a hurry! and no you don't have to ride a cr 500 on the powerband the whole time to have a good time.
"500 is hard to start today" Pshh 500's hard to start anyday.
Should always lean them over first
Just a little trick lean bike horizontally until fuel runs out of the bowl ! Keep 2 spark plugs with you
All the people telling you to pull the throttle stop, and quit babying it have probably never rode a cr500. Awesome video man, you've earned a subscriber.
Thanks man, I appreciate that.

Really felt like I was back in time riding my bike....thank you for the sharing.
this makes me miss my 04 KX500. Long live the big two strokes!!! Nothing better in the sand than a big two stroke!
i ride a yz 250 two stroke, cant even imagine riding something thats twice the power of my bike, my bike is swirly enough as it is lol.
Haha same here. I've got a buddy that rides a CR500 and he pulls power wheelies all the way up Olds! I'll stick to my yz 250 for awhile as well.
Your YZ 250 has 50 HP. The CR 500 has 68 HP. It is all about the torque
banshee01ful I've actually managed to ride a kx500 2 weeks ago and i definitely agree about you saying the torque on those things.. i literally had to pin the throttle haha
If u ride a 250 two stroke u can ride a 500 no problem. The bike just has a little extra lol
***** haha yeah you gotta hold on
Itakeyouthere, I have also cold seized a bike from taking off like that.. my banshee I never knew till my dads friend told me. I stopped doing it and I'm good now, it has been four years and nothing bad had happened yet so I believe him. By the way nice cr500
youtube brought me here... and i liked it
I love the camera placement, reminds me of when i used to sit on my dads lap when he drove the lawnmower
yes, you need a lot or low down power for sand, 2 stokes dont have this so they keep their revs up to keep the bike from getting stuck
Your pace is fine. I've ended up in the hospital twice from "opening er up". I highly recommend riding well within your limits and not the limits of the 500.
Looks like a blast. We only have woods here in Florida. My CR500 eats back tires like candy.
Thanks for sharing this video with us! That 500 sounds amazing!
I miss my '91, so much fun in Glamis and Ocotillo Wells with it.
Looks good man. I ride a kx450f, and a CR500AF. People that are talking shit have no idea how much power that really is. 500 is like a 900 4 stroke. Just insane. Do have to get your 5th gear fixed though! lol
I hope I get to ride one of these bikes one day... Look so powerful for a 2-stroke!
Didn't even sound like you hit the power band, but I bet that's prolly just the mic. Looks really fun, I'd love to go there some time.
Haha u r right better to b safe than sorry. The cr needs a freshing up ?? It sounds good, i just love to hear the pipe on a 500 explode with power!!!
i went for my first time just over new years, its alot of fun but can get boring really fast if you are with a slow group. and if it rains then its definately fun because the bike just sticks no matter how leaned over you are (long as your on the pipe)
He is right though its not all about the power and how big your bike is its all about your riding experience, how long you have been riding, and most important your riding skills.
nice vid man look beautiful there and very nice bike im a 4 stroke guy but i live the cr500
5th gear on a 500 is stupid fast i personally don't own one but ive ridden my grandfathers 89 cr 500 and i got 4th and that was fast enough. i ride cr 250 and 5th gear on that bike is wild, 5th on a 500 is something people don't talk about for a reason respect the bike before she eats you up and spits you out. respect to all the 500 riders. looking to take over my grandfathers 500. see you on the riders forms take care be safe and what ever you do don't whiskey throttle

good job you actually let it warm up before going hard on it
alright thanks bro, its cuz im 5'4'' or 5'5'' an want to ride a 250 but not really sure if i wuld touch the ground, so might start off with a 125
they are no lower than a 500, just lighter
That looks like so much fun, I wish there were decent dunes up here in Canada.
Nice vid, trying to get a 500 of my own atm.
Awesome!! I don't think I'll be able to buy a bike there though... Can I rent dirtbikes without a license?
2-strokes need a certain pipe tuning for each adjustment. What the 4-strokes offer, a 2-stroke can be made to have lots of top end, lots of mid, or lots of low end.

Over here where I'm at in So Cal where I'm at where lucky cause its not that far from the valley. So a lot of people go there
kinda cool on how he did a burnout and made a rut in the sand, to stand his bike out! :) making lemonade outta lemons I guess!
nice bike looks better then most cr 500's ive seen
I live in Gilbert AZ, Glamis is about 4 hours away, is it worth the drive to go ride in that place?
not always had a blaster it would go up anything fast strong never got stuck but it was totaly aftermarket though could shift going up a dune
that would be a pretty bad day not to mention how do you get back to your camp
This place looks like paradise
Cool ridin there
So when riding in sand like that are you supposed to keep your rpm's up cause you cr is screaming
Is this a good beginner bike
+Curtis Wagstaff lol i hope thats a joke
I really hope your joking.
GSXR750 is like a little baby to a 2t 500...
I learned on a cr250, not a bike for people who are way too good.
I learned on a cr250, not a bike for people who are way too good.
Nice riding!
Whats it like to go down in sand compared to dirt?
i got and XL600R and im only 5,2 15 year old hahaha nice video dude wish i could buy a bike like that
does it hurt when you slide out on sand like it does on hard packed dirt?
Someone's salty that you're out having a blast on an awesome bike is all. Keep ripping it up. My first street bike was a GPz 750. If you're not uncomfortable riding it, keep it up. Only way to learn is to ride regardless of what you ride.
that looks so fun!
Is dune riding really that much fun it seems a little choppy
so beautiful out there .... nice video ! ...
I have a hard time riding in sand like this, I'm not used to it, it would take me forever to get used to it on my bike, let alone a CR500..
Once the bike stats going it stays up real well.
how do you find your way back to camp
damn riding in the desert looks like the most fun
Yea it's possible you just need to stay on the power band if you can't get up it go around it but yea you can ride threw the dunes i
old school.. noi8ceee.. love it..
I have a 97 CR500. It can be a prick to start. Now that the decompression grooves are gone It prefers a small quantity of flesh on the footpeg and a deep kick.
can someone who has alot of experience at glamis (and similar) tell me:
what is the system that keeps people running into each other?
i have seen many videos and keep wondering how its done.
do you use spotters, or just well established routes?
alright thanks man, would saging an shaving the seat an putting a lowering link make a big difference in the height of the bike? an haha true i would jus want to get one foot completely down, what bike do u hav?
Well take into consideration how much you weigh to make the bike Squat down. And you can always pull down the suspension and that should lower is a little
Did you do eny jumps there?
looks like great place
it really dosnt matter how old, tall, or how much you weigh, its really about experience, but me personally i would go with the 250 4 stroke i got my 05 kx250f when i was 14 and im 17 now and i love it to death, my friend recently bought a cr125 and he out grew it in 2 years it was to slow for him i would jump straight into a 250, but be careful and get to know the bike before you go crazy
so you would suggest at least a 250? jus worried if i wont touch the ground on a 250 since im like 5'4'' or 5'5''
What is he going to get road rash ?
Btw are you only riding on dunes?
damn thats a nice place. where is this? obviusly a desert lmfao but..... nevada?
where is this place??? does anyone know about good california riding spots? Mostly around San Diego if possible.
250 4 stroke!!!!!!!!! its a super fun bike u can put around on it and wen u want to go fast u can and if u like to race fuck yea i love 4 strokes.... but thats what i like u do wat u want to do..... oh yea and 1 more thing if u go from the xr100 to a 2 stroke 125 u wont com out of 2nd gear because u might be a lil scared from the power and tork it has but its all up to u dude
i have your gloves but mine are crap and ripping apart, i need diff ones
im a novice so i dont actually know this but, isnt it a total pain having to clear out all the sand and shit from your bike?
how much time can the cr run before you need to refuel ? thanks!
Wearing gloves makes up for wearing short sleeves and shorts, right?
this is the usa?
Yeah, southern California.
I think that is the best for moyocross, because in my country in Russia , only land and mountains
biggest dunes in the usa
is this a chest mount?
obviously he is taking his time... the bike is not winding out at all haha come on guys. but question where are you?, is it hard to ride on sand?, because i would like to try it?.
is a cr 500 like a 450 2 stroke
I'd LOVE to ride somewhere like that, with something like that!
Yeh but blasters are the kings of the dunes :P
IBcnz banshee
Get that front tire up my man way more fun than putting
How much Was This as I am From The shitty Uk and Have Just gotten My Yzrf125 Taken off Mw your Bike Seems Cool I realy wanna Live in Merica!
awesome vid!!!!
Glamis seems sandy and full. Can they sweep it out? Wait, my soufle is done...
looks so fun wish i had dunes near me!!!!
Great bike and video. Why your friend has a flag on the rear? :)
an also whats ur height? will i be able to touch the ground with one foot on a 250? im 5'4'' or 5'5''
whats so bad about slsd?
@mikamoto69 Many states require registration of off-road bikes and quads, registration for a year is on average: $25 USD
Why doesnt it have a 5th gear ?
why the little flags?
No people, a 500 2 smoke is nothing like any four stroke. It is a whole nother animal..If you don't have good throttle control, the powerband will rip your ass straight off.
why that flags on your bikes ?
hey how does a 125 dirt bike ride in glamis? is it good enough to ride through the dunes?
Dont smaller than 250 two stroke in the dunes i think i have never ride in dunes i think you would by a 250 two stroke
I have 99cr500 that's why I was asking.I'm planning a trip to some sand dunes
We got nothing like that in the UK! I need to move to the States! LOL!
cool video!
No problem :p I once kicked my bike 50 times (counted every kick) till I got it started in the winter :D
I'd go a 125 of some sort (I'd go a KTM) or even a 85. If you feel very confident & are a decent rider go a 250F.
It's harder to control in general. I'm not sure if you're trying to disagree with me or what, but it takes talent. You cant just hop on a dirtbike and expect not to crash or go over the bars the first time in the dunes..
