I would agree a wired network is better if you want to avoid jamming, something ALL Ring products can be defeated by as they have no internal SD storage. They are absolutely useless if you stick a strong signal on 2.4GHz and then simply walk up to the device and remove it. There is no footage before of after. It really isn't the best choice of product.

Ring isn't as good as you think. Yeah, sure, it's easy and stuff, but there's way better for less. You have to pay to record footage, which is yet another monthly subscription. Stop paying, and you basically have just a live video feed only. TP Link TAPO devices, for example, have SD cards so you don't have to pay monthly.

....on some of their Cams the SDcard slots are iffy ...despite using known good brands like genuine sandisk the sd card can be working normally with footage being saved then randomly it will go NO SD card installed and no footage will be recorded ....then you will see it later detects the sd card again and everything is back to normal ....if you do a search ...you will see quite a few people complain about this issue
Remote viewing
....when viewing your cams remotely the stream is interrupted by all the cameras going off in the app and a message do you want to continue....Tapo say its to stop their cloud service being overburdened but it happens even if you are not using the cloud service

Or just have a local recorder in the house, way better for evidence.
@@headchopper247 you should only use sd cards for backup if the recorder is down, SD cards aren't designed for continual writing!

As others have said, point to point is a good solution. Also given the garage already had power, a pair of TP-Link powerline networking adaptors may have worked. You can buy them with a WiFi access point on one end for a neat solution that wouldn't need the cable.

I would've suggested putting the PoE injector in the house rather than in the garage. I mean if the garage is the bit getting broken into, there are a handful of things that could be done differently - the burglar could just kill the power to everything you installed :'-(
Media converters and armored fiber has become quite cheap, would have run that aerial in fiber, saves you of all the lightning, potential, ground loop problems.
A Texecom or Honeywell alarm system will be supported for decades, a Ring one? I'll bet they discontinue support in favour of a newer model in a few years
Texecom is a bit overcomplicated for DIY and home use, bit incredible value and they have a fairly decent computer program for getting everything right. I use Texecom all the time and even their support team is outstanding - I have contacted them twice as I completely forgot what a setting should be, so they phoned me and advised.
Honeywell also makes some decent stuff and I would say that was more for the DIYer. Texecom is great, and expandable too. My home system is a 48Zone split to various day and night groups with quick ON/OFF codes and fobs etc.
I also have two active outdoor sounders and strobes hooked up together with 4G and Internet.
Ring is more of a toy, like the iPhone is compared to Android phones.
Could of easily of fitted a veritas 8 in there for cheap and put a PoC camera system in
Point to point all day for this type of job, you can even buy them pre configured ready to go
Anyone considering anything other than positive comments on this, should take a long hard look at themselves. Good work on every level Nick.
People are free to give their opinion, especially on that dog's dinner of an installation of network cable. Not everyone has to agree with you and you can't influence the way people comment on videos, if you think otherwise, maybe you need to take a look at yourself. People will be along to offer alternatives that are covert and can not be ripped down or tampered with, if that's OK with you. It's NOT good work, you need to stop saying things are when they are not. There was a far better way of dealing with the network side of things, a neater and more effective way that would have cost less.
Don't think for one minute you are going to get public support by your choice of words, it seems you just need constant validation in life and will manipulate the situation and say certain things to get it. If it wasn't this video, it would be another. UA-cam is full of people like you.

Reolink WIFI mate, no subscription, higher quality than ring. I'd advise them to get the SelectaDNA spray as well.
Yep Reolink definitely better than ring, usually a little more but like you said no subscription so typically better off cost wise in about a year. For a cheap good quality camera from Reolink have a look at the RLC-520A. They also so door bells both WIFI and POE.
I fitted the Reolink cameras and am blown away by the quality and ease of use.
I use Reolink, wired, on a dedicated LAN back to the NVR in the garage.
I don't like mixing "home" (internal) network with Reolink or any other IoT equipment ...
Love my reolink - however, the spiders love em too. Need to go clear webs off/around the cameras every 2-3 weeks.

hi there great install you probably could have put the POE adaptor in the house and powered the access point from there another option if the power to the garage is coming from the house would have been PLC (Power Line Communications) you get adaptors that can sent an Ethernet signal down the power cable and at the other end convert back to ethernet in the garage.
I use ring hardwired doorbell cameras in so many places for cheap cameras. £49.99 (or cheaper in sales) plus £13.50 for transformer and enclosure. Can't go wrong.
Nick, I would have installed an EAP225 outdoor access point, on the outside of the house, the inline PSU gives some electrostatic protection. If the signal isn't that good inside the garage you can install one in the garage in a mesh configuration, no cable needed......
Nice Video (again). Only disappointed that no Adams mum joke on the Sky cable exit covery thing. I would say always run 2 cat6 cables if you can - time involved for potential benefit is worth it. Glad you've fitted Cat6 sockets, rather than just RJ45 ends. The Access point could have been wall mounted in the garage which would have helped with cable management and tidying. And I'd defo consider Eufy brand for cameras and floodlights - similar to Ring but no subscription. Made by Anker who do the top quality battery chargers etc.

A wireless point to point kit would have been much better than the cable running across the garden Nick. Unifi or TP link if you're on a tighter budget, got to step up your network game 😉

I would have used a point-to-point wifi antenna rather than cable. Just because the cable is easy to tamper with. Ubiquity stuff is much better for professional installs than ring
Hard wired is always best. Yes there is a place for wireless, yes Ubiquiti is very good, and yes someone could cut a cable, but when installed professionally and descretely a much more robust and future proof solution. Central (and can be backed up) power via PoE, etc, etc.

Mesh APs would probably have been the best in this case. Point to point isn't exactly budget friendly, compared to mesh AP.
I’d usually agree that hardwired is the best shout, but the height of the cable at the garage end would concern me. If I was determined to use a cable, I’d probably be burying it.
But if I was doing this for myself, I’d almost certainly be either using some kind of ubiquiti point to point kit or some kind of meshing solution. The amount of time spent running that cable alone would cover the cost of a second hand point to point
It may also be good to get some better cable from somewhere that sells teldor, get some double insulated stuff with strong metal braid through it to prevent stretch. Strong stuff.
I think normally there is a bit of a loop on the Ethernet cable between the two structures to allow for expansion.
Do your tie wraps prevent the cable from expanding?
RING???? I paid to have a Ring doorbell supplied and fitted, got written permission from my landlord, lovely peace of mind. Then! a neighbour complained about invasion of privacy issues, landlord reneged on the permission and I had to decommission it 😢😢😢😢

Yeah there's so many products that are wired into the electrical system of a house that makes no sense that they use Wi-Fi. It's like sure you can have wireless security cameras but you're still gonna have to power the cameras or go out there and charge the battery every week maybe more. Car chargers are another one you literally have to wire the thing in you might as well run the ethernet cable too.
You should be able to configure those access points from your phone without an app just by connecting to its management on the default IP address. Although iOS and android get a little perturbed about connecting to a network without Internet.
I've been thoroughly impressed with the TP Link stuff. Probably could've got one of their smaller outdoor access points. Or even they have a small wall mount one with extra ports if anything else needs to be plugged in.
Great job again mate, I would recommend a Point to Point for this type of install next time no cable and its range is amazing. I personally don’t like the Ring with the industry I’m in I would only recommend and fit Grade 2 alarms wired or wireless and I use the Ezviz or Pyronix for light camera and the doorbell etc. But again that’s my preference and professional opinion hope you’re having a great weekend and the boss had a great Birthday.

Great decision going for a data plate instead of making the end off with an RJ45 plug 👌 Solid CAT6 cable is designed to terminate in a patch panel / keystone rather than be used as a 'patch cable'

The one "critique" (I.e. something I'd do differently so not really anything _wrong_ per say) I'd put the POE injector on the other end of the RJ45 run so it's more secure from being switched off for whatever reason (accidentally/deliberately, for whatever motive good or bad).
In a perfect world your security system would also have a UPS (which is why you feed the POE from a central location because it's easier to connect one thing, A POE switch, to a UPS than however many alarm related things like cameras, Wi-Fi Access Points etc. This setup I'm talking about however may be overkill for the friend's needs however. IMO ther's nothing you've done that's "wrong" i.e. worthy of being slated, I'm just offering alternative solutions. Security isn't a black-and-white thing, the measures required depend on the _risk_ and how much _risk_ the owner, your friend, is prepared to take and how much security will make them feel safe. (Sorry that became a bit of a ramble)
That's quite a long-ish distance for PoE though. Have to be careful about that one.

@@jin3121 You are indeed correct (just double checked). I'm sure that the one time I ran a lengthy cable externally, it was a bit on the edge for PoE. Ah well, you live and learn! (I'd prefer a normal cat6 and a (PoE) switch at either end tbh)
I've got a proper CCTV setup at home but opted for the ring doorbell because it just works, yea you need a subscription to recording but it seamlessly integrates with alexa, great on the phone bringing up previews, sensitivity is great and motion zones trump every other option out there. Just thought I'd balance out the comments, 99% seem to be people trying to convince people out of ring products
Well Amazon also make blink products. Their doorbell is similar quality and half the price. Has a local HUB for USB device recording too
Personally I would have used two mesh routers, one in the flat with RJ45 and one in the garage. This would have worked fine for the distance. Something like an Eero 5 or 6 would have been perfect. Would have saved alot of faff and the wires and also loads of time.
Umm, the steel wire you used to hang the CAT cable between the house and the shed.. Shouldn't it be grounded at the lower side, because it's basically a lightning rod? Or am I missing something here?
its not connected to ground so lighting wont find its way there... lighting wants the quickest way to earth... will find a other way

So, if lightning hit the very vicinity and "wanting" the quickest way to earth, it would definitely hit that wire (since it's way-way-waaaay more conductive than air) and then through and around the brickworks into the ground. Should you stand close by, you'd have the worse day of your life I presume.

But, the steel wire can be touched without any additional/special equipment, which means the current path can be through a plant, animal, or person touching it.
@@Shocker99 Yeah, well, I was thinking more in the line of lightning strike moseying downwards nearby the building, a suspended but not grounded steel wire is nearby it's path and has probably way lower impedance (compared to going straight down thru air) going PART of the way diagonally downwards through the wire, then at the lower end of the wire, arc out directly into the ground OR through the wet shed wall to another metal object in or around the said shed wall.
Could have used Powerline to send the ethernet over the Powerline. One in the house one in the garage would have worked well for that
I would of probaly done a wireless P2P link, TP Link do them pretty cheap, CCTV wise, I avoid Ring products, Hilook are really good budget IP CCTV systems and no recurring costs, money your mate can use for a gardener.
Love a bit of catenary wire but next time there’s something like this, look up Ubiquiti Nano Beam AC from somewhere like broadband buyer.
If he had thought about it more, he could have saved all that time and effort using a couple of Powerline adaptors. Plug one in to the garage socket, one in the house and there is your 100/1000Mbos network ready to go.
God knows why he wasted hours fitting that big ugly wire, absolutely waste of time and money.

I would not touch ring with a barge pole.
Firstly paying a subscription every month to store recordings is a waste of money as you can get CCTV systems where your data is stored locally and you will never pay a monthly fee.
Then comes the privacy issue that all these ring devices must be connected to the internet to function. In the EULA the Amazon attaches to its ring products they have all the rights to any footage or data their devices collect. So if the police want footage from a cam inside your house or doorbell Amazon will just give it them without a warrant, this has already happened. Same goes for advertisers or anyone else who Amazon deems fit to sell your data to.
Add to this that if Amazon decides in the future that their ring products are not as profitable as they wish and they drop the line which they have also done before with other products all your cameras, alarm systems etc are paper weights as without the connection to Amazon servers when they “phone home” to make the mobile app to work the devices will cease to function.
Get a system that works locally where if you lose your internet connection your system still works and your personal data stays in your possession and not stored in multiple data centres around the world and you have no control over what is done with it.

Dont take this for gospel - but worth checking. I think that you are only supposed to run exterior grade metwork cable inside for up to 2 meters. Possibly something to do with it not beimg Low Smoke. As I said, dont take it for gospel - just soemthing a sata cabler told me.when i was doing my CCTV install.

Pointless in operation and that is why absolutely no one buys or fits them to ANY professional installation. I have *NEVER* seen one fitted anywhere, ever, in the UK!

Now that he has that cable across the yard, he is going to hate that. For the same price as the materials, he could have gotten a set of AirMax NanoStation M2 loco point-to-point access points or something similar and still have a good connection for a remote access point. Also, it looks like it may be time for a new apprentice to crawl around in the attic.

If he didn't want them, some powerline adaptors, maybe one with wifi extender built in. I am absolutely amazed that someone calling themselves a professional would do no research and present a poor quality solution like this. I would definitely not be happy with this as a friend. Maybe in 25 years ago I would when there was no other alternative, but not today.
@@Bond2025 Yeah, those could have been good for this application. I never use them, so I don't know if they work; the one set I pulled out of an office was replaced with a cable because it had problems.

And the entire Wi-Fi can be disabled by a £10 device from the internet. You don’t need to be a hacker to disable someone’s Wi-Fi from a safe distance.
I realise you're on a budget here, but better (and cheaper) equipment choices would have removed the need for the access point and POE adapter in the garage.
This would have saved you money.
Why use crappy flexi conduit when you could use plastic conduit for a proper job.
Why go to any of this trouble when he could have got a pair of Powerline adaptors and plugged one in to the garage and the other in to the house and extended the network in about 5mins for less than £30. You can even get them with a WiFi extender built in, so the camera would connect easily.
I'm amazed he didn't do any research on this and wasted his time and money and made it look a right mess.
@@Bond2025 don't think they work across RCD protected circuits, it looked as though the garage was a completely RCD isolated install and thus would be able to see other unit in the house
@@sygad1 Yea, tell that to my powerlines, OK, its not the BEST like the ones on the same circuit, but I have TP link av1000 behind two RCD and still get 50mb internet on a speedtest in the garage. More then ample for the smart plugs, cameras and solar equipment

It's actually not a bad data install. Lightning protection would be my only concern. You could probably get away with one on the inside to protect the inside equipment but generally you want them anywhere you're entering or exiting a building. At least from what I found online the ones from ubiquity are the cheapest in the US. And it's just a box that goes in line with the cable and then you connect a ground wire. There are some fancier ones where you actually just cut the cable and terminate it with punch down tool but like I said those were way more expensive.
The biggest thing is using outdoor rated cable on the outside.
Yeah sure you got the brush plate that's what works there you don't really need anything fancy there's multiple ways to install the stuff for a reason. What do you mainly want something done right and looks professional. And if you want to learn more fiber ninja on UA-cam.

Just a thought ... bit late now but I'd have used a MESH system, you wouldn't have needed to run the external Data wiring then. You could also have run in a data extender if the sockets in the garage are supplied from the house supply.
All that effort of running network cables, then it's on an access point anyway.

What a waste of time and money doing that. You could have got a couple of Powerline Adaptors for £30 and plugged one in by the router in the house, then one in to a socket in the garage. That gives you your 100/1000Mbos network over the mains wiring anywhere in the house providing it is on the same phase. No need to go to all that trouble of fitting extra cables, that ugly wire to the garage etc.
I was watching thinking WTF is he doing! All you had to do was fit a cheap WiFi extender in the garage, or buy a set of Powerline Adaptors in which one has a built in WiFi access point and CAT5 outlet. They're not even expensive.

Wifi for a doorbell in my place, as there’s no route for cat5/6 from switch to outside front door. 3m tops between device and ap, works a charm.
