maybe consider that a barista is the only person one is allowed to watch, so if one has anxiety about open spaces or a new coffee shop or interacting with anyone, doing the thing you're supposed to do, like staring at your order is the better option.
It's because to the average person there's something "magical" about specialty coffee making. If you look at most starbucks, the machines are faced away from the customers. It's partly to cover up that they're super-automatics and it's just basically button-pushing. However, it's also to discourage the customer from staring, asking questions, demanding corrections or chatting up the barista. All of that slows down the line and means less money for $bucks. In independent coffee shops with ultra nice machines, they want to show off the process, the machines and the craftsmanship, and the baristas are often encouraged to be friendly with customers.

I know at my cafe we can only have a certain amount of employees working at a time in order to social distance. During rush, we will have one person POS and the other making drinks and grabbing pastries. The cashier will help with pastries if we get backed up and keep our brewed coffee fresh
speaking from experience, it can become quite stressful, but it is so fun to just do what you know and not think too much, I find it so fun really and I have anxiety lmao
The café I work at usually has 2-4 ppl working at a time, we get so busy. And I still get stressed out being the one just steaming milk. So congrats to you for staying so calm when you’re doing shots, milk, hand off AND taking orders all at once! Incredible!
I usually work solo openings, and 8 am’s if I’m not opening that day, and man. Solo rush is a pain. Every now and then I’ll hear “take your time” from a customer with a lobby both waiting for their drinks, and some still to be served 🥲 The kindness and patience in the very least, is always definitely appreciated when I’m alone even if I can’t afford to break away from that rush momentum lmao
I feel like youtube recommending this to me was a huge sign... I had an awful stressful day at work today. My cafe does food as well as coffee and I was training a new hire. It was just me and them for the last four hours of the shift (not very busy like this video) and I was really really struggling. I love being a barista and would love to just do that, but I never want to work alone during busy times because it just feels inhumane in a way. Thanks so much for helping me not feel so alone, you're doing a great job.
This is why it’s so important to be nice to people and to have your order ready before approaching. I’ve never been a barista but I can imagine the wrench it throws in their busy rush when people just stand there and hold up the line!
I'm a complete novice to this level of coffee consumption (never been a big fan of Starbucks and the like, and local Western-themed roasteries or cafes are only a recent highlight trend as of 2-3 years back at my place), so I usually look up at the menu once I'm up at the counter, and ask baristas on which coffee I can get that is sweet (no fan of no-sugar coffees). More often than not it's vanilla latte or some such stuff. I would love to explore other blends, but buyer's remorse got me back (again, not a fan of no-sugar coffee).
As a waitress myself I have to say that this was so inspiring. I get stressed so quickly as soon as three people or more are waiting and this really boosted my confidence haha good job!!
Dude. I'm only 4 minutes in and I'm hooked. As a Starbucks barista who works at one of the busiest stores DT/mobile/cafe store in our district, I've learned to be fast. I'm trusted at this point (1 yr in) and I've been "happy" about the improvements I've made. But DANG. This- is is a different level. Measuring out each shot so precisely, steaming your milk perfectly every time, and staying so calm and quick as the rush comes.....if you put me in your situation, I'd fail, if you'd be in mine, you would be the best out of all of us. You truly know the science and art of pulling beautiful shots, and steaming your milk majestically. LOL. The biggest difference is probably the way we pull shots vs you, and the syrup options we have vs yours. As you probably know, ours is....automated. We press a button, or a few at most if they want ristretto, 1/2 caf, updosed, blonde, or decaf shots. We also get trained on milk techniques, but the most latte art we're trained on is a dot for the flat white....yeah. Other than that. we can decide to do latte art if we want, but apparently "nobody got time for that" since for our rush, aka we call it "peak", is expected to be 30 seconds with handheld orders (meaning there is someone outside to take orders as well as our speaker box) and around 45 seconds on an average day without handheld. It's sad, drive times suck out so much of the best things....like an opportunity for actual customer connection. Lol. GREAT job. Great video. Very sorry for the rant. Cheers from the U.S!
Have you considered moving the cups so they are easier to reach? I think it's worth the effort to make frequent tasks easy. Consider a cup dispenser so you can get a cup with 1 hand and 0 attention. Also, can you get a clicky Sharpie? It's fancy but you don't need to take the extra motion to post or cap the pen. In high-end electronics assembly factories, we design the work flow so the operator can use both hands without needing to look at each thing. Anyway, it's enjoyable to watch you work. Somehow it's all very positive...
Currently working in a cafe with only 1 staff member at a time, coffees, short order, hot food & sandwich bar… watching you gives me a sigh of relief, myself and other staff that work out shifts alone do an amazing job just like yourself and we need to cut ourselves some slack when we feel like we’re making people wait or not doing a good enough job. We’re actually superstars running solo like this 👌🏻 You did an amazing job too 🙂
Nice to see that she's weighing out the gram input. Even with the stress of cash tending and making coffees for customers looking to get in and get out, while following procedures and not skipping steps is a huge plus. Great job!

The pressure of long lines, smell of coffee in the morning, sound of milk steaming, making shots, greeting our customers and having a convo about their day/interests. It's just nice working at coffee shop 😊

Theres no time to relax sometimes. Writing shelf life of toppings, cleaning the coffee machine, mopping the floor every time, checking pastry. And customers expect their coffee 1 sec ready🤣
As someone who is moving on from starbucks to more independent coffee shops this was a super informative video. Good for learning how to sequence drinks and what steps to prioritize especially since starbucks machines are completely automatic
Ah, watching this had me on edge but I was enjoying seeing her multitasking. I work at BIGGBY Coffee and working a morning shift alone was honestly quite fun until mid-rush when I have 5+ people in line waiting for their drink and others continue to walk in. I hate the feeling of making people wait. Our standard of talking to customers while they wait is also quite difficult to execute when I’ve got a billion different things going on while thinking about what I need to do next. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this though :)
My anxiety went through the roof simply by seeing her making all this stuff while people watched and waited for her even though she was handling it so well!! :‘)
Awww I missed this 🥺 I worked at Michel’s for a year and do openings on winter. I always panic with the morning rush but it makes me happy when I make their favourite coffee 💜
Me too! When I finally got a HX machine at home and was able to steam milk and pour a shot at once I felt very efficient. Can’t imagine doing 3x shots, grinding beans, steaming milk and pouring different milk haha
I used to work as an uber driver, after a couple of years of it, you become a master of small talk. It helps on those long rides or in your case in those long waits between paying and being served your order. Its good to make small talk. It makes the3-5 minutes wait seem like a minute. Learning how to interact also helps keep clientele. Cheers and I loved the video!
I find that alternating routines (starting second customer's drink while drink one is going, then taking payment from second and third, etc) helps space tasks out and it's less movement.
I was working by myself for a whole Sunday night shift at Second Cup, and just my luck, I had a mini rush of people come in at the same time 😩 Lucky for me, a coworker was walking by and came in to help me with the rush 😊 There is no stress greater than working retail, and dealing with a line up by yourself!
I felt the anxiety in my chest when I saw the third customer come in, and I never worked as a barista or even in retail! The panic of feeling rushed, the need for everything to be perfect for the customer, and the anxiety of losing track would never help me working jobs like these! Fair play to you!
As an ex barista myself, i really love making coffee and brings up the smile in the cup but the only thing i hate is the anxiety when you still have some cups going on then another customer keep coming. Thumbs up for you:)

Welcome aboard!
I can't even serve 3 customers in Overcooked and here she is serving the community AND doing it alone!!!
i used to work in a hospital making coffees and sometimes while working solo a nurse come with 15+ coffees and that is just one order :)
I understand this. Cafes need to hire at least 2 baristas during rush hours
I know at my cafe we can only have a certain amount of employees working at a time in order to social distance. During rush, we will have one person POS and the other making drinks and grabbing pastries. The cashier will help with pastries if we get backed up and keep our brewed coffee fresh
@@victoriaklassy3010 Her co-worker asked if she got this and she looked like she didn’t need his help.
Yes I think
Damn this made me realize barista might be a more stressful job that i imagined to be
If it’s actually busy, then yes! It can be extremely stressful. Speaking from experience here
speaking from experience, it can become quite stressful, but it is so fun to just do what you know and not think too much, I find it so fun really and I have anxiety lmao
it can be incredibly stressful but it's also the most fun kinda stress?? especially if your customers are generally cool people
As a barista, I appreciating you acknowledging this. 💙☕️
I work and the 2nd busiest starbucks in my district....it's stressful for sure 🙃
Every now and then I’ll hear “take your time” from a customer with a lobby both waiting for their drinks, and some still to be served 🥲
The kindness and patience in the very least, is always definitely appreciated when I’m alone even if I can’t afford to break away from that rush momentum lmao
Someone has rightly said that a happy family is when there is a wise and loving woman in it.
This was stressful and relaxing at the same time. I don't even know how.
the morning ambiance is so calming i can't even explain
I feel like youtube recommending this to me was a huge sign... I had an awful stressful day at work today. My cafe does food as well as coffee and I was training a new hire. It was just me and them for the last four hours of the shift (not very busy like this video) and I was really really struggling. I love being a barista and would love to just do that, but I never want to work alone during busy times because it just feels inhumane in a way. Thanks so much for helping me not feel so alone, you're doing a great job.
Power to you love
Most of people sometimes they work alone like this but I think it is she is a professional sale ❤❤❤❤
She maxed out her agility points during character creation. What a legend

As a waitress myself I have to say that this was so inspiring. I get stressed so quickly as soon as three people or more are waiting and this really boosted my confidence haha good job!!
This is like Overcooked, but for coffee, and you just beat this level with 3 stars.
Does overcooked has a single player options though? 😉

Thank you for your comment, Erin :) I'm sure you're doing really good at your job too, kudos to you and keep it up!
omg I never realized being a bartender could be so hard. I truly respect your profesionalism while being nice and smiling all the time!

Good idea 💡

The fact that you mix the sugar with the cream so that way you know it dissolves is the best tip anyone can learn lol
This is so nice to watch. I was a barista for 7 years and now in a different industry, watching you takes me back and makes me feel nostalgic!
Great job!
Once you have your routine down, shaving a couple seconds by skipping a step like that can just throw you off even more.

I could watch 10 hours of this. Makes you feel like you're there. Just a sweet escape.
For some reason, I really enjoyed just sitting back and watching this lady breeze through her routine. Albeit that I'm a level one barista(with no current work experience) I'm well aware of how seemingly difficult it would be to take orders and work the machine. The lever on the side of this setup for steaming the milk was especially exciting to see in action.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I respect y'all so much, whenever I think of complaining bc it's taking long I say to myself "don't even think of it, it's not you dealing with all of that work"
Appreciate you :)
This is your daily dose of anxiety for 19 minutes straight
INDEED, when the second cust came yet she hasn’t finish serving the first one yet I already have anxiety.
I don't understand why she can't have another person to help??? that's just because she doesn't wanna share the money???? silly though..so annoying to wait that long for ur coffee. This kindda job requires more than one person, as u serve many at a time. So what so impressive about being late??? ..Impressive is that when the right amount of people getting the job done on time and making customers happy. Sorry hon

Being a cook in charge in breakfast service makes me relate to this more. People can be super rude and demanding at the same time but you just got to smile and do the fckn job anyway

I’m a barmaid and this is so relatable, I had quite a rush last week while I was working alone, the bar almost fills up. It’s pretty satisfying when you manage to multitask everything and get people their drinks but so stressful when you get stuck on something and people start waiting too long
I was once a barista at starbucks ph. Man, i miss those days. The morning and afternoon rush. The pressure of long lines, smell of coffee in the morning, sound of milk steaming, making shots, greeting our customers and having a convo about their day/interests. It's just nice working at coffee shop 😊
I like to go to work early to help out my co worker so they don’t feel stress.

Being a waitress myself, I can relate to how important multitasking is. It’s fascinating how similar our jobs are in some aspects.
the fact that she could multitask while aerating the milk. i'd feel confident as heck having her in the bar with me lmao haha
Hahah.. Often times I’d still scream for help though ;)
My anxiety went through the roof simply by seeing her making all this stuff while people watched and waited for her even though she was handling it so well!! :‘)
I was a barista for two decades. There's a lot of comments from people feekling stress/anxiety watching this. I found it soothing.
Awww I missed this 🥺 I worked at Michel’s for a year and do openings on winter. I always panic with the morning rush but it makes me happy when I make their favourite coffee 💜
As a home coffee/espresso nerd, I'm hugely impressed by the efficiency of good baristas. Nice job.
Me too!
When I finally got a HX machine at home and was able to steam milk and pour a shot at once I felt very efficient. Can’t imagine doing 3x shots, grinding beans, steaming milk and pouring different milk haha
i love it, the pressure and the fulfilment of serving the drinks after.
Ah this makes me miss working in a coffee shop. So cosy, and I would love the rush
Hahaha.. Thank you!
As an ex barista myself, i really love making coffee and brings up the smile in the cup but the only thing i hate is the anxiety when you still have some cups going on then another customer keep coming. Thumbs up for you:)
You’re such a trooper! Good job! Nice to see someone can handle a rush and still be clean and organized.
