    This is brilliant, Toby! I think it's a skill we can develop over time because simplifying requires a good deal of visual discrimination - what is essential to conveying the scene. Similarly, making decisions about use of colour when "less is more" is the goal can also demand quite a sophisticated sense of design. You've given us something else to work at.

    This is lining up with exactly what I want to learn about, minimalism and lots of water. I guess it's common to get too hung up on details. I'm like a lot of people, I don't know how little I need to draw in order to make the picture read like what I'm trying to portray.

    • @TobySketchLoose

  • @lilybay1

    Please do trees. All by themselves. Conifer and deciduous.
    Then a vid on negative space. What is it? When to use it. How to do it. Perhaps a Forest of trees and a bouquet of flowers/leaves.
    I struggle with these and need slow clear instructions. I believe it’s perfect for a “Toby Sketch Tutorials”
    Paint on! Cheers

    I truly enjoyed watching your tutorial tonight. I'm just starting this loose sketching and it's a real challenge as I'm quite a perfectionist. I'm hoping this will change that in my art projects. Oh, I love the metal cups you use to organize your pencils, brushes, scissors, etc. Would you please share where you got that? Thank you. Looking forward to more of your lessons! Thank you so much.

      I know I may sound like a grump, but why must we say this in French. It sounds so pretentious. Why not good old English ‘open air’.

      @@borleyboo5613Perhaps just not use the term yourself, if it irks you.
      English is already an amalgamation of words from many sources and your use of ‘old English’ made me smile.
      I studied Old English for a while - it’s the root of today’s English yet completely unintelligible to speakers of modern English which is a constantly evolving language.
      I use ‘plein air’ coz it gives me a little thrill to use terms relevant to a new skill I’m trying to develop.
      Au revoir!

    • @paintboxplayer8810
      @paintboxplayer8810 11 місяців тому +2

      The Impressionists, who were French, represented quite a revolution in art in their day. They were the first to advocate painting in the open air, hence it being called “en plein air” which was their language. Using the term might be honouring them. But just saying you’re gonna paint outside works too haha.

    Toby, you have still not answered the really important question. Are you Toby or not Toby, that is the question?
    Actually more seriously why did you not paint the sky grey? It seems to me a major feature of the scene, quite a moody grey.
