Since I made this, I discovered this ingenious and super cheap 'plein air' box which I now carry everywhere - check it out in this video -- studio.ua-cam.com/users/videobW5rSFgpLXY/edit
This sketch was so lovely and will help me with my future sketching outings. I love how you explain your process and the paint application. Truly inspirational and motivation to keep learning. Thank you!
Hi Toby, Just started to sketch again after many years absence ! Love the simplicity and ‘less is more’ attitude of your work!! Can’t get enough of your short videos! Has been a complete inspiration. Thankyou👍👍
Haha, seeing you pushed up against the fence reminded me if the time I sat myself next to a tree of bees. I didn’t realize it because I was so focused on framing 🤣 This was a lovely video. Thank you for sharing. I always enjoy seeing your workflow process
Thanks Laura!! One of the first outside classes I taught I plonked my coat down on the ground, 3 hours later picked it up and discovered it had been sitting on an ants nest all that time!
Toby, sem palavras, o que é difícil para mim😂Farei exercícios com suas orientações deste vídeo. Eu estou vendo seus vídeos com calma, e refletindo nos seus ensinamentos. Muito obrigada 👍🏻🌷🇧🇷
Great video. I have been watching more of your videos and you have teached me to not be afraid and just sketch loose. It really helped me develop my sketching. Thank you.
Love this video. I love those house too, I walk past them regularly and it was so interesting seeing how you captured them on the page, what you kept in and what you left out. The second part is what I need to work on, I try to put too much detail in. Thank you for the video, love to see more like it 🙂
Great video, the sounds are amazing and makes me want to sketch outside even more, btw the very vocal bird early on was a Great Tit! - huge vocals for a very small bird
I LOVED this video, thank you so much! I even love the church bells! I have a problem of drawing to big, this video helped me out quite a bit. Thank you, I love watching urban sketchers! Great Job, God Bless
Trying to gather courage to go sketch outside, this loose style of yours and pleasure in recreating a scene will help me. I appreciate your commenting along the process, very clear. Thanks!
Go and enjoy it 😁 if you're nervous about it, start with pencil sketching - quicker and easier to do incognito. Then progress to bringing out a full set of oils 😜
A lovely sketch and a really informative, motivational and cosy video. I love red chimneys too! Thank you for posting and keep up the great work Toby 😊
I'm very pleased to have found your work, I have had a problem painting Sky's,been obsessed with detail and know I cannot draw a strait line you have inspired me to pick up my brushes again. Many thanks
Hello, I’ve just discovered your channel. I can sometimes be a ‘stickler’ for drawing everything as it is and it’s refreshing to see you adding a squiggly line here and there! This video is very relaxing to watch.
Excellent. Very helpful. I was scared of painting pictures with colours. I got the idea now. I will try confidently hereafter. Thanks a lot. Best wishes.
Very nice! Thanks for the video. I very much enjoyed the process you use for plein air painting. I would like to paint outdoors and have had trouble getting started. This is helpful.😊
This is so helpful. I suppose by now you’ve studied how to reduce wind noise in addition to acquiring one of those nostalcick and clever Plein air boxes. I really appreciate your time.
Just discovered your videos. Really helpful, informative and interesting. Will give it a go. Have sent a link to my friend too, think she'll love this as well. Thank you
Absolutely loved this video Toby! It was fascinating to watch your creative process at work - the finished work was just brilliant! So full of life and character! Thank you so much for sharing - and the setting was utterly delightful by the way. It was lovely to hear the restful ambient sounds and the birds singing. I was born in the UK, but moved to Australia when I was 9. Now my home is in tropical Northern Australia and while I love it here, it’s not very practical to paint outside. It’s always hot and extremely humid, so paper just turns to mush outdoors, plus the nasty tropical biting insects can make life very unpleasant. My "plein air" sessions usually consist of setting up in my car with the aircon running flat out! Cheating a bit I know, but it is what it is … 😜 Thanks again for a super video! I enjoyed it very much. 😁👍
Hi Jeni - lovely comment thank you so much! Haha, I don't think it's cheating - not practical to sit outside in 40 degree heat. Most of my plein air season is 'helped' by added rainwater, or done from inside a cafe. At least I don't get the insects though, I'm not sure I'd cope!
Thanks for sharing this sketch adventure - as well as sharing the thought process. The rendering turned out really nice - I really like the character of the sketch (the linework and such), as well as the shadowing and touches with pen, as well as the watercolor of the sky. I still have not jumped back into playing with color - and still trying to get ideas and my mind around it from your videos. Congratulations on getting to 2k subscribers...you are actually now well on your way past that!!! Look forward to your next video...
Just found this great comment in my spam folder for some reson - glad you enjoyed the sketching! Hope youre having fun jumping back into colour, if you've got there in the last few weeks :)
Hey,we have the same kind of grass in our backyard...in Kalimpong (ie. in Darjeeling India) which is aeons away from ...whats this place...London ? And was that the Great Ben I heard?
@@TobySketchLoose And Toby.Just want to add that you are just great. I am learning so much from you and so are countless others. Please keep your videos flowing so that our creative juices will flow too !
I love the way you explain everything and make it look so easy. im a complete beginner and have difficulty with colours and having never used watercolours before, but I'm persisting and slowly learning. I'm doing the 10 lesson free course and loving it and learning lots
I really enjoyed this video and found it very helpful, thank you. I've been sketching outside for a year or so and recently been struggling with my approach. This has helped me reassess it.
Thank you so much Toby. I just recently found you and I've been binge watching your videos. :) I like how you simplify things for beginners. I just adore your wibbly wobbly lines!
Love it Toby, thank you so much!! I am attending a little workshop today on watercolour sketching and you have me inspired and possibly thinking I can do this! I have always loved this style of art :)
I am new to your channel and am so happy I found you ! Totally new to me this way of creating art , love the scaled back focus . Am off to Europe for 6 weeks soon in my camper van and you have inspired me to give it a go … am going to try and sketch/paint everyday … thank you for being so generous with your knowledge & skills , you have inspired me 🙏🏻
Just enough detail.. shading enough.. everything you draw is balanced and produces a drawing that is both an accurate presentation and impressionistic (that’s a contradiction) .. lovely and inspiring..!!
Please, please do more of these on location sketches. It was great to watch and I followed along sketching. It made me smile to hear the church bells. 😊. It’s amazing how you give the impression of the sketch being really detailed, when it isn’t, if you know what I mean!

Do you mind listing your palette colors used in this? The colors are gorgeous!
I'm not sure exactly, but there is definitely cobalt blue and scarlet lake. You can check my full palette on urbansketch.co.uk/supplies

That natural sponge you used in the sky is a game changer! Getting ready to raid my wife’s makeup bag 😊
