I had FOV from Dr. Sebag in 2005 both eyes. Developed cataracts 6-7 years later. Very happy with my vitrectomy. I had debilitating floaters that affected every aspect of my life.

      Hi Carlos -
How old were you when you had the procedure? Did you get surgery for the cataracts? How bad are they?
I'm 27 and considering a FOV, but I'm nervous about the side effects, namely cataracts. It seems like everyone that gets a FOV reports getting cataracts within 10 years.

@Chris Smith The risk of blindness is extremely low with an experienced ophthalmologist. Cataracts can be removed, also a very low risk. What should be compared is quality of life with floaters and quality of life with various surgical outcomes.

Dr. Sebag, I have much respect for your work and interest on vitreous. We have an increasing number of floater sufferers, specially floaters located in the premacular bursa.

I recently had a floaters only vitrectomy in my right eye in an attempt to improve the quality of my life. I developed PVD in one eye in early 2021, the second eye 7 months later - at the age of 45. My vitrectomy was successful 2.5 weeks ago. I was concerned but I could not continue to live with massive floaters in my eyes. I had no surgery issues. My eye pressure has increased, I’m on medication and under weekly observation. But I have no floaters in my right eye, where I had the vitrectomy. I’m very pleased so far. Very grateful for God and my eye surgeon in Australia. I’m glad I had the surgery. Praying that I don’t get a cataract. Very pleased so far.

Thank you Natalie for sharing. I was looking for some assurance. I too am having vitrectomy on my right eye for floaters only. The operation is booked at the end of January 2023. Actually, it is to remove floating membrane from a PVD which happened last April. I was supposed to have the surgery last Sept but wanted to give my eye more time hoping the membrane would move out off the line of sight but to no avail. God bless from a fellow Aussie and Christ Believer.

Please Dr. Sebag. So much of us are suffering from floaters and in distress. It affects psychology and the quality of life. I am one of them sufferers at the age of my early 30s. I have glaucoma and this year have developed more floaters. It gives my constant anxiety and depression. My vision is alright but with the floaters in front of my field of vision, I see tinted brown floater in the shape of a flag. Please cure this condition soon.

Molecular floaters study is the brilliant idea. If you find a way to threat them pharmacologicaly you would become the most significant ophtalmologist in the world .
I wish I could somehow make my contribution and get my floaters examined by you with your newfangled methods. Is there's a chance to be extradited to the USA as a patient for your farther researches for a limited period of time at least? I agree to live in a limited areas (for the sake of not breaking any kind of USA laws) just to fight the affliction and help you and other people understand its nature better than ever.

I would never do one just for floaters had to have one for debris after cataract surgery and it is no walk in the park. Thank God no torn retina.

vitrectomy for floaters without PVD is a waste of resources, time and risk. It is a temporary solution, if statistic is important there is proof of it. As for cataract well, everyone will have it sooner or later so if someone is really I mean really suffering from floaters then one should have a cataract surgery and then a PVD induced vitrectomy or a combined surgery. If one wants to get rid of loaters once and for all. Of couse in young age like under 40 or 45 years maybe leaving some anterior vitreous is OK if there are no floaters there but PVD should be induced otherwise there is risk of reoccurring floaters. yes it is more risky procedure but 2 vitrectomy is as much risky if not more. I am a floater sufferer as well so I sympatise with everyone who has similar problem and I applaud all doctors who try to help us but I think core vitrectomy is not a solution only PVD induced.

Hi. I'm 72 and 4 years ago I had torn retina. I had the three-part procedure, vitrectomy scleral buckle and reattachment of retina. It was completely successful and I've never had a problem since. This year I have the other eye cataract removed and did not get a torn retina from it. I then had one week apart from each other the SLT laser treatment and over a period of two months continuing with the eye drops my pressure has gone down to six, 7. I no longer have glaucoma! Search for the best doctor by checking his credentials. Don't let just anyone mess with your eyes. I now do only six month checkups.

Did I hear correctly...23% chance of cataracts requiring surgeryfrom this procedure? Which means the number of all cataracts cases are even higher. That's rather high isn't it? I take it, the floaters have to be really debilitating to take that risk?

Marhall Not that we know of. There is no interest or money being invested on eye floaters research because they are treated by the majority of doctors as a benign condition.
