- An shortened version of this appears in episode # 711 but here for our internet fans is the long version! This Band Maid interview is from their show at The Chapel on San Francisco back in November 2018 and topics include: Their most favored videos they have done, Miku talking about her most difficult video for the band, anime choices, favorite bands and musicians, the difficulty of creating songs that would be accepted by their major label Nippon Crown after leaving indy label Gump Records . Now Revolver Records is the girls' label as of March 1, 2019. Enjoy! Newest singles available : Glory and Bubble on CD!
“Your fans respect you because you’re musicians first.” Bingo!
No, I think this band is fantastic because the band members have become close friends first, and totally respect each others musical talents.
absolutely! Everything else is just sugar on top
spot on right...
That may be true but there appearance came first. If they were average looking they would have had to work harder for success, that's the case in any profession and even more so in public facing ones. We are all hard wired to give biased attractiveness. This recent trend\movement to rise above it just mass lie. We are just very clever primates at the end of day.
@@Dayandcounting True indeed
Band maid is one of the most under rated bands out there
It's not about being underrated. It's about being unknown. People just haven't heard of them, let alone heard them play. They will never be a mainstream act that gets played on the radio. The large acts/producers have that pretty much sewn up, but they should look to be where Babymetal are now in terms of popularity, playing 20 date US tours in venues holding 5000, not 5 dates in places holding 500. How much of Babymetal's growth was organic, through social media etc, and how much was due to promotion, I couldn't say, but it doesn't feel like the band's management are doing much to promote them overseas, or even in Japan for that matter. They are playing festivals in Japan, and are way down the bill each time.
Part of it is because they're girls. Some people don't want to take them seriously. I showed them to my cousin, and his response was is it because they're cute girls? Some of those folks don't get it.
@@RevStickleback Don't get me wrong, Babymetal has some great stuff, but in the end, they are a corporate idol band. Most idol bands get cast aside when the producing company says it's time, never to be heard from again. I feel like that is Babymetal's fate within the next few years. B-M was self-starting and has built their brand like the old-timers did, by word of mouth and starting small and moving up.
Unfortunately, even though I don't personally care, the language barrier will limit how high they rise. From a pure business perspective, they would do well to write the majority of their songs in English and work on their pronunciation, BUT, in doing so, it would change who they are as a band and I don't think that would be good. I personally love the mix of Japanese and English they currently use. My favorite lyric of theirs is the way Miku and Saiki sing "Daydreaming" as "Day-Dweeming." It's so pure and true to themselves.
I just love this band just the way they are. Instead of them switching over to English, they inspire me to want to learn Japanese so I can better appreciate them in their own element. There's also something about not understanding the language as a listener. It's as if the brain processes what it's hearing in a different way. Instead of the language centers of the brain processing what you are hearing, it's like the music accesses a more primal part of the brain, as if speaking directly to your soul.
@@frossbog I prefer Band-Maid and their story, the fact that they weren't casted, are a real band etc, but the fact is that they had almost three entire albums of songs written for them, and Miku talks of how, when she was recruiting Kanami and the others, she had demo tapes of songs they could play. While they may have been a more organic creation, without Miku's record industry contacts from her idol days, and their support, Band-Maid would almost certainly not happened.
@@RevStickleback That's true, but it's also true of many great bands. They all had to make contacts somewhere. The most important aspect is that they have still had to earn their place the hard way, which galvanizes them and they are not owned by anyone else. They're not under the thumb of a huge production company that can pull the plug whenever they wish. After Budokan, you will watch their star rise like you would never believe. I can't wait to see it.
“I write essays about drumming for a music magazine and then I read them” 😂😂😂
Every time I see these girls, Akane always proves why she’s my favorite.
She seems extremely sane, but with the rest of the band being what it is, that's pretty easy to do 😁
The interviewer did a really good job here. Also he seems knowledgeable about jrock, he also knows some nihingo that’s why the ladies are very comfortable talking with him.
I want the publishing rights to all those songs Kanami wrote that were “rejected.”
BAND-MAID is the best rock band on the planet at this point in time.
I'm counting on them to keep their heads, after now having broken through to the big time. Please, ladies, take care of yourselves. I want to listen to you for a long time.
Damn, I just fell in love with them all over again.
BAND-MAID forever!
It's January 5th, 2022. I just discovered Band Maid on UA-cam looking for heavy rock bands with a female lead vocalists and I feel like I hit the jackpot ! I showed 2 good friends and they also like them alot. I'm anxious to order a shirt and sweater to advertise them when I go to my favorite places. I hope they come on tour here near West Palm Beach, Florida so my friends and I can see them in concert this year.
☝😃
This is one of the best interviews of Band Maid tbh it has subtitles and shit finally.
Thanks man
The silent assassin
Discovered them on UA-cam while watching Anime stuff somehow they came up in the autoplay I checked them out and never looked back, the US is missing this kind of music as of late. They are the real Deal!
This Band is remarkable in their talents and abilities !!!!!!!!!!!!!! very professional !!!!!!!!!!!!!
omg! Finally, the answer to what Saiki's tattoo says! Thanks!
They are so polite ,composed, and respectful....love it!!!!
...like ANY japanese
I used not to like Rock very much, only a small group of songs from different bands, but when I found Band-Maid on UA-cam, an arrow crossed my heart, now I love their style and songs, they are so harmonic, they play not ear saturating kind of rock, like other bands, their beat is awesome, they are simply amazing, not to mention beautiful and so talented, I think I´m their newest fan. They should make an album and name it ¨Rejected¨ with all their rejected songs.
That is SO AWESOME to hear...I hope maybe some of the 80s and 70s band thay have melody you can find to like also. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my interview!
My God! Saiki ACTUALLY smiled!! She never smiles! Thank you for posting the interview. Good stuff! I subbed :)
Thanks, I am glad I finally got to see this. Great job! 👍
Thanks so much for the translation and relevant interview. Here's my take on the group and its amazing individuals:
Band-Maid is the hard rock Beatles of our time! Composition, Execution, Consistency, Uniqueness, Charisma and Charm. Oh yeah... and Cute as hell, IMHO. They are destine for mega-stardom. They're the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" is a great place to start. Their newer songs drive even more - Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Fate, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, and on and on ! Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones, are kick-ass! /
Kanami, Misa, and Akane are all older than Miku. When Miku found Kanami online she was about to graduate college with a degree in economics. That puts Kanami at age 22 at that time in 2013, and she turned 23 that year September 28th. That makes her 28 years old now. Kanami knew Akane and that's how she got into the band. At Akane's last birthday party December 14th, they got her a cake which had 29 strawberries on top. Akane is obviously 29 years old. Misa and Akane went to music school together, and her birthday is October 15th, which would put her at 28-29. Why a lot of people think Miku is oldest at 27 is beyond me. Saiki joined the band at age 19, her birth year 1994 is confirmed, as well as 1991 is Miku's. The other members ages are based on circumstantial common sense evidence. They have been together almost 6 years now. Look at the facts and do the math.
@@barrycurtis4056 That's good info, Barry. As I said, my figures were an estimate I made some time ago. Your reasoning appears solid. I just wish B-M management were a bit more forthcoming about the personal and professional lives of the members. I mean, fans want to know stuff, right! I'll correct their ages in my piece after a little more conformation. Mahalo!
@@TomClark-Futoura this will change. Miku has declared 2019's theme "turbulence" for her band. They are currently a top five Japanese rock band. They have the talent, charisma and ability to be the biggest hard rock band on the planet today. They need exposure on American TV like Saturday Night Live and then a summer music festival tour across the states. It is coming. "You're a legend." Best regards fellow fanatic.
@@barrycurtis4056 check you out letting everyone know! :) Glad you liked my interview man !
Oh boy, one hell of thing with MISA you are missing out - she can DRINK, which adds stars...
Thanks for the upload!
“No.” MISA is a mood
Amazing band and great, talented beautiful girls. Professional musicians. It's now my favor band. Watching their videoclips almost every day and start to love them all.
Thank you for re uploaded this 😄
Can we appreciate how Mincho was trying her best to speak English?
@ 3:43 "I...make songs." She's such a sweetie.
Totally!...I was hoping she knew just a little more English..but it all worked out !
Mincho rocks my world! I loved her answer and the band reaction to her favourite Manga. 😆
Oh Band Maid and Mincho please keep doing what you are doing!
Love this band. They are amazing.
Thanks so much nice program!
Good job John and Danny with this..Love these girls Kanami just might be one of my favorite guitar players right now!
Thanks, for reuploading👍.
“Love is strong”. Damn! I love you Saiki!
Yes she is their Queen. But they are all goddesses. 🙂❤🇬🇧
akane is a cute, badass drummer and likes evangelion. i'm in love.
my thoughts exactly :D
awesome interview i love these girls
So glad this is back on UA-cam!!
Thank you! :)
Will the behind the scenes video be back up as well? That was a great video!
6:28
Q: Akane where is your hat?
A: I've bartered it for a better bass drum pedal. Now I can kick twice as faster than before.
Glad this was able to be re-uploaded with new music clips. Loved the manga question. : )
Before anyone freaks out, when they said that Kanami writes all the songs, they are talking about the music composition.
It's clear from the credits (and other interviews) that Miku writes most of the lyrics.
Yes! I was hoping Kanami went into more detail about writing them usic...I will pick her brain more next time hopefully
Miku has said in interviews that normally she comes up with an idea for a song and writes the lyrics, handing them to Kanami who writes the melody first. Then Kanami hands the song to Akame and Misa who write their own parts, handing the song back to Miku to polish the lyrics. After that, they just practice the song until they're all satisfied. Seems to me that they all have equal parts in the songwriting which shows in how well they sound and how tight that sound is.
very arigato for this interview!
My pleasure to do this interview!
So looking forward to seeing them at the Echoplex in LA on September 30th. And hell yes Sacramento loves Band-Maid.
The best band! So cool that Misa is a Paz Lenchantin fan.
Xolotlです s,yes! A Perfect Cirlce,no wonder her name was so familiar!!!
Yeah that's rad. Both amazing bassists. Paz's work on that first Perfect Circle album is incredible.
APC and Zwan
Nice and very funny interview. Thanks for that. I hope they come to Europe again.
Great interview!
Historic Interview..... One of the Great Interviews of Rock&Roll History!!!
Loved it, and my wife and I were there in SF with you and loved the show. I hope they are back soon and (no knock on The Chapel!) in a bigger venue! It is so much fun to see them in that small intimate setting like the old days of good ol' rock, for me anyways LOL The interview setting, and your interview/interpreter/subtitles editing was really nice as well. Allowed me to watch the interview and not have to just focus on reading and interpreting word salad Hah! And when we did the meet and greet I pointed to Akane's head and pouted about the hat. She laughed, but now I know who is responsible... po... 🤘😎
I hope we get another interview next time! :) It was such a great night for us!
@@pathaden Thanks for this interview, there is a great lack of such conversations with them in English, but maybe before the next interview a small market research and gathering questions from fans?
Hope you will get to interview these ladies again in the near future. This really was a fun watch !
Thanks for this! I missed out of the SF show, but I hope they come back, maybe to Aftershock in Sac. I love how music is the universal language there at the end with Deep Purple. No translation needed!
Thanks so much for watching! Take care
All these five incredible musicians are amazing and fun human beings but my gosh isn't Kanami just the sweetest thing ever!
Mr. Interviewer you did an excellent job in this interview. It shows in how you carefully considered your very good and on point questions. Thanks. I would love to see Band-Maid take over the old Stones title from the seventies "World's Greatest Rock Band". They are that damned good and their potential is off the fucking charts. Thanks, again.
My pleasure buddy !
I would love to see a documentary about how they got together. Yes Yes... Or maybe even a movie.... No?
Glad he finally got around to some musical influence questions. I would've appreciated some discussions on their equipment but good interview overall.
I couldn't quite get there period the manager cut us off during the interview period that is why I stood up because I was trying to persuade the girls to keep talking to me
Ahh I love Kanami....her trying English, asking about reading and just freezes and smiles.
And of course Akane self-advertising...bhaahah
Fenno! just saw this...great interview and nice editing. Well done. I'll be checking out some of their tunes...
AWESOME!
LOVE THESE YOUNG LADIES...
I’d love to see them live! 😍🤘🏻
Thank you sir for this video. And band maid fucking rocks. The very best female heavy metal band.
Thank you band maid.
We all love you
@ 13:06 Dammit! The most brilliant question I’ve heard anyone ask the Maids! “Kanami, do you prefer writing in major or minor key?” Give that man a raise!
Absolutely love this band 😘😘❤️❤️😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
i love Band Maid very much
Awesome!
Nice edit this time, Jonathan! Just kidding brother man, it's great that you got this video back up! Hey, I checked out a video of Paz playing bass live in a small Texas club, barefoot. That might explain why Misa never wears shoes on stage.
Could be so buddy !!! I will ask !
Anyway, it's amazing how good all the songs are. The first part is beautiful, but the catchy phrases flood into one song. And it feels like a very fine arrangement is built in. These could be jumbled together if done wrong, but they are not at all, they are integrated.
Just love how she end what she says with po it soo kawaii 😍💖😍💖😍
I love those girls.
Saw BAND-MAID, stood at the balcony where Misa and Akane sat, great concert. Kind of knew what Saiki's tattoos said "Love Is Strong" (that's beautiful).
Wow this was a really good interview, thanks for drawing out the more honest and less kawaii side of those musicians!
Much appreciated my friend :)
Dennis Mayo oh i think it was to appeal to the american speaking audience. also i think japanese people like foreigners
thankyuuu....poooo........😊😁
Kanami is a super star. No disrespect to the other girls at all. This has nothing to do with her being a girl. She is a true ripper on that guitar.
And I bet more than a few of those songs that they will never release and that were rejected by the record company. Are probably pretty darn good and top notch !
TODAYS BEST ROCK BAND 100%
kanami🥰 she looks so harmless✌🏽
The question was each members favorite MV. My favorite answer was Kanami's at 10:18. "Alone" as their first accepted self made song. Looking at this link, what a great answer.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Band-Maid
damn!!! I f**cking love Miku!!!!!!!
"Some fans were complaining"... Fans don't complain!
Lucky interviewer !
I loved when Miku was trying to say Pensacola and the other city names lol. Sad that it was removed... B-M is coming back to LA soon, maybe another interview?
No luck this time buddy...Maybe next tour!
You have that exactly right. Band-Maid is an organic band. They are a band unto themselves and NOT a corporate manufacturered construct. That alone puts them head and shoulders above the rest. They write, arrange, produce and perform their own music just like the Beatles. All the others, like Babymetal are far more like the Monkees. Huge difference. Sacramento loves Band-Maid. So do l. Check their tune Order. Amazing band.
I've heard Japanese sentences end in Neh, Yoh, Nah, and of course Masu or Desu, but never, ever "Po." That is unique. I was initially confused, but really enjoying it by the end!
Only Miku does that ! hahaha
そのとり。
本当に。
What does the word “Po” mean? I’ve noticed she uses it frequently at the end of sentences.
@@bmack2938 It's not even a word. It's just a sound she makes at the end of every sentence. As I mentioned, that's sort of normal in Japanese, but she's the only one who uses that particular sound. It's kind of like adding style or intonation to your sentence. Personalizing it.
Her name means little pidgeon or dove. From what I understand in Japanese "po" is the sound the bird makes. I maybe wrong i heard this from the internet.
I haven't seen them. Please come to USA Minnesota.
"Fans would like to see a video of you making the album in the studio."
"Yeah! That would be interesting. I would like to do that!"
Two albums later....still waiting for it. lol But we love them regardless of if they do it or not.
Actually...it was made for the Band Maiko which came out shortly after this interview! :)
kanami is too kawaii... i cant-
i love them so much
I would love to sit in a room alone with Misa; and have a silent staring contest... Loser cracks a smile first.
I thought you where going to say ,,have a few bourbons,,haha...
The silent assassin
@ 3:15 omg there were alot more songs that they could've had but were not allowed to produce after being rejected 😔
I should have asked them some of the song titles but I was really pressed for time during the interview
it means there's alot of a good song probably if they allow ? do you think ?
hello misa...Paz is also my favorite bassist.. a perfect circle 😊
I would have never expected Sailor Moon!!!!!
😅 MISAs answer if there is any bookreading going on... "no". 😅
3:39 I always knew it !!!
Finally, someone asking the real question... Akane-san, where's your hat, po?
Is 'po' an honorific? What is the meaning?
@@Jac70 Lol, no, It's about Miku... She likes to pretend she is a cute pigeon. Apparently, pigeons say "po" in Japanese. If you listen carefully, you'll hear her add "po" at the end of phrases quite regularly. It's so unusual that it even throws off Japanese show hosts that aren't used to her. So we also like to add "po" in our comments... it is so endearing, don't you think?
Mika isn't as cute as she pretends to be. Infact shes an extremely well informed manipulator of whats fashionable, creative and desirable in entertainment. BM is her dream, and she had the smarts to make it a reality. Which was enough to convince Saiki and Kanami, the latter being an extremely sought after guitarist in mainland Japan; and no doubt eventually even further afield. You don't attract talent by being aloof and saying 'po'. You do it by being very clever at what you do. Mika had a complete turn around considering her early difficulties and its been good to see her re-invent herself like this, seeing as she wasn't all that far from where my uncle and his family grew up. Times were pretty tough for her back then.
Kanami alone drove me back to my interest in Music and guitar, so thats my edge. Maid culture, is inherently J orientated and its fine to appreciate it. Don't however neglect the real effort the founder put into it. She wants to come across as likable and endearing, which is much different from legitimately being that way. There is alot more going on under the surface. People might be surprised.
@@libertylizard_ Indeed, however... you saw more than was written... I never underestimated Miku, she is very clever indeed, and endearing... whether she's truly endearing or not... we won't know until we get actual private info on her... which is not likely anytime soon. So meanwhile I like to think she's really endearing! Po!
It really isn’t hard to meet her and ask questions when she’s back home and not touring lol I don’t get it...I get the sense most here only know her from Band Maid. Which I suppose in hindsight makes sense. I’m probably being a little presumptuous on people’s location/language ability here.
Anyway, if you are all that curious visit Japan during the primary tours. It’s not that expensive here and she’s pretty much always back playing maid between sets, it’s nice that she hasn’t forgotten her roots in that sense. It’s a good way to meet a lot of people really. I bumped almost smack face into Ono Haruna last year. So if I can do it, just being stationed out here on tour, so can most of you if you are such big fans.
Good luck with the stalking lol. Gambatte!
I can die for Miku :( SHE SAID SLAM DUNK! I GREW UP WITH SLAM DUNK!
I think it's amazing Misa's fave bassist is Paz!
Awesome. Any chance you have a higher resolution available one day?
The interviewer said the band makes their own music! No else writes it! Thats awesome!
When they first started they had others writing their songs. The song Alone was the first band-maid song that they wrote themselves. Since then, they have been writing their own material or co-writing their own material.
Be nice if you guys could do a follow-up interview with these lovely phenomenally talented ladies sometime in the near future !
I am trying my friend. I was denied at Tokyo Coast and in London last year. Thanks for watching it!
英語苦手だから半分くらいしか内容わからなかったけど、いつも海外の人はこんな気持ちなんだなと。
それでも好きだと言ってくれる海外のファンの人達はすごいなと思った。
Shit I'm getting that tattoo!
Kobato looks like fun 😆
🔥❤MAIDs💙🔥
I love paz lenchantin and know her from a perfect circle
Great band.
The word "po" here in the Philippines is a word that indicates respect or politeness.
***....The More You Know....***
Miku kill the little hat
These women are incredible. I am not a fan of heavy metal rock. However I am drawn to this group. Everything about them is first rate. The real deal!
I can't believe that in this day and age female musicians still have to deal with this chauvinistic crap of 'do they play their instruments'. Anyone with even a modicum of experience of playing an instrument/playing in a band could tell that they are actually playing their respective instruments.
There's probably hundreds of amazing female bands in Japan, not to mention jazz musicians, so yes, it's really stupid to think they don't play their instruments just because they are pretty.
The Thrill video Miku wasn't playing the guitar cords...That's why the question was asked
Did Kanami(?) say she likes writing in major or minor? I didn’t quite catch what she said. Thanks for the interview!
she likes both to write songs with
don't pressure on Misa chan
she will lose her coolenes... haha
