A marathon can seem like a LONG way at 26.2 miles, but how far do you actually need to run in training in order to run a marathon? There is lots of different advice out there, and in this video we take a look at the various schools of thought and try to get to the bottom of how far your longest run needs to be, and how far you should be running in training in general.

Just ran my first unofficial marathon on Christmas Day. The last 5km were very tough, legs completely 'jellyfied' at the end. I am happy it was my big 2020 achievement. I broke my challenge down into sections. I had ten sections, so in my mind I counted them down as I went.

Consider the elevation profile of your race when it comes to training. My first marathon had a lot of downhill in the first half which sounds great, except my training was on the flat and my legs were in bits with 13 miles still to go even though the pace I ran was nothing special

@@MattSwain1 Good point, I struggle to comprehend how ultra runners do mountain races. The downhill parts must be torture. I'm going to make a point of doing mountain running when we get through Covid and I'm actually allowed out of my county.

I don't do any runs by mileage anymore. I've found that running for 3 hours has little more benefit than running for 2 hours so I'm trialling doing more 2 hour runs instead and will see how I get on with my spring marathon! Suits me as I never enjoyed 20 mile runs!!

For my first Montreal Half, I got to 15km before going for the full 1/2 during my training. A buddy said, you just did 15km, you sure can do the 21k. Boosted my confidence and did do the 21km on my own. During the cool of the day though and some of it on gladed trails. Montreal Marathons are always on hard hot pavement. So after I did my last virtual marathon on Thanksgiving, I decided to focus on getting my time down from 4 hours. In fact, I recently decided on a target goal of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
In the past, my weakness has been to train too aggressively, so this past week I have been focusing on running more miles at an easy pace. Yesterday I did 12 miles but pretty much maintained an 8 minute pace until the last mile. I have been following a sub 3 hour training plan the last couple weeks.
Before I run early in the morning, I only drink water and don't eat anything. Originally it was because I just didn't feel like eating before the run, but I read somewhere that it can train your body to run with no immediate energy or something like that. I do find, however, that I need to eat a protein bar, banana, and Gatorade immediately after. Obviously I would eat a good meal on race day, in hopes of using that energy for the run, so that's my plan.
Speaking of race day, I'm looking at 2 marathons for next year, one in April and another in November. My goal is the 2023 Boston Marathon, because the qualifying time for me is 5 minutes longer than in 2022. So I'm looking forward to that!

A wise person once told me that a marathon is a 20-mile 'warm-up' followed by a 10KM race..Especially valid to those that have run London.
    Example Training Plan Week:
    Monday - Strength & Conditioning
    Tuesday - Tempo/fartlek (heehee)
    Wednesday - 'Bonus' long-run
    Thursday - Track/speed session
    Friday - Strength & Conditioning
Saturday - (pre-covid) parkrun or recovery miles
Sunday - Long run with marathon efforts at the later stages
    Circa: 55 miles, maximum
    Take care and stay safe!

My longest training run prior to my first marathon was 22 miles, at easy pace about 2-3 weeks out before race day. On hydration, the advice I got at the time was to drink a small cup (then Gookin-Aid, now Vialyte?) every 5 miles, don't try to drink it on the run but stop completely, step off to the side and get the whole drink down. Take the last drink at 20 miles, after that I was told after 20 it won't help to drink any more as it won't get into your system fast enough to be of any benefit. About a month out I raced a 25k , I was told that a realistic goal/pace would be to take your 25k time, double it, then subtract around 20 minutes to get a goal marathon finish time/pace. I averaged about 100 miles a week for the last 8 weeks (took me about 6-7 months to build up to that) and then had a taper week of 50 miles. during which I did a carbo-depletion-load diet the last few days before the race.

    @joelgriffitts1385 3 роки тому

I started training for a Jan 30th marathon in earnest at -7 weeks, so a fast build-up. I've focused on slow pace to ramp up mileage fast without such a high risk of injury. The low-heart-rate approach has been heavenly compared to my old way of training way too fast. After just two weeks in this build, I ran 20 miles today with relative ease. I ran it faster than my daily easy pace, with a few miles near race pace. I took two gels for practice, and they injected wonderful energy into my muscles in those last 7 miles. The 20-miler is as much about building confidence and familiarity with the distance as it is about the physiological adaptations that come with it. With this build so fast, I won't cut back mileage for any of the weeks, but I'll stick with the easy pace for 90% of my running. I hope to squeeze in two more 20+ milers before the race. Excited!

    Formula for a successful Marathon:
Build up long run to 2 hours+. One tempo run and one interval session per week. The other 4 days are recovery days.
Beginners: Take a rest day each week with a short easy run on the other 3 days. 40 miles a week is a good starting point.
Intermediates: Run once on the other days for up to an hour. A good target is 50 miles per week.
Advanced: Run once or twice on the other days to hit your goal weekly mileage. Ideally 70+ per week.
Elite: Include extra easy runs on session days, totalling 13 runs per week and ideally 100+ miles per week.

I had 5k focus in first half of 2020 and 10k focus in second half. Switching to HM focus for 2021 and will only move on to FM when I got my HM goal. But HM goal may involve training up to 20 mile runs for aerobic improvement so I'm keeping aware of how it fits into future training. My plan is to do HM without fuelling probably so that is one area I will need to review most for FM.

Longest run of 36k 4 weeks out. You have to do a couple of months of practice eating and drinking on the run as well as regular running at the time of day the race will be. You need confidence builder runs also. So approx 6 to 8 weeks out, a long run of between half marathon up to 2/3 marathon distance (28k) at the pace you intend to run on race day. It's a good psychological boost and leaves plenty of time to recover before taper.

  • @alfromtx245
    @alfromtx245 2 роки тому

With my last marathon training plan, the longest run was 23 miles. There were other pretty long runs (16-20 miles) that were different. A couple where it was a regular long run with 2 miles around 10K pace at the end. Also, runs where (after warmup) is was 10K pace for the first quarter of each mile. These weren't brutal, but they were harder than regular long runs and they really helped with fatigue resistance.
Although very few plans would recommend this, I actually ran a marathon distance training run. It was about a minute per mile slower than marathon pace. Because it was slower, it didn't mess up the rest of my training. It seemed to make the actual race physically and mentally easier to handle.

Anecdotal, but: I ran a half marathon with almost no running prior: I was using a rowing machine (concept 2 in case it matters) nearly every day, anywhere from half an hour to an hour, and in the three months prior to the half marathon I ran a total of 17 miles, the longest run being 4 miles several weeks before the half marathon. This worked fine for me: no injuries, and little soreness -- I did a 10k row the day before and the day after running the half marathon. I'd be curious to try scaling this up to a full marathon.

No mention of Galloway marathon method regarding the length of long runs. It is very different approach and very successful. Especially for avoiding injury, "hitting the wall" and fast recovery Super gentle method. But the long runs are long and the "uselessness of training past 20miles" on the longest run debunked. • @gengar678

I think 34 kms is a pretty good number for the longest run.
Training for the marathon is tricky because you want to get in as much distance/time as possible but on the other hand you cannot get injured since you can only run a marathon if you are able to start...So in the beginning take it easy, till you are confident your body can handle more kms. This means you need a strong base and this means that you need enough weeks! Do not start from nothing on a 12 week program for instance.
What is very important I have found in my training as a triathlete with the run as the weekest part is that you have to try to put in a lot of hours running and analyze your long runs critically. What is your HR decoupling for instance. Try to get an insight in this to come up with a reasonable pacing plan for the marathon.
When you are confident about this pacing plan start AND stick with it till around km 36 or so, if there's anything let then you might increase your speed.
And last there is your energy plan. Plan your intake before and during the marathon and plan how to do this.

I’ve been shaving time each one, but seem to be stuck at 4:30 + with niggles for afters.. I’m even nursing an ankle “injury” at mo that just seemed start for no reason so have had to dial running all the way down.. losing the 32 miles run fitness I gained for the London virtual marathon. 😕 I’m crossing my fingers for my 12 month delayed Lullworth half in March... I started doing more trail running last year, and was doing better last half of 2019 doing gym work, but still managed to suffer a strain that meant i could run 3 or so weeks before a marathon in october 2019.. so was just gym work.. ended up with my IT bands seazing up from mile 13 ish.. ran the whole last 3rd almost run/walking nursing the pain in both knees.. Doh! That was my last and the last Bournemouth marathon.. so nended on a bad one and bad time, which was annoying.. i kept up the trail running, and gym and felt ready for Lullworth cove half last March.. well.. we all know the story for the running calendar from then onward 😂 .. Now doing no Gym work but definitley started more running specific drills at home, after visiting a physio for a mystery ankle issue.. so defintely fingers crossed for health and running calendars for 2021. No. Running is high impact. Cycling is near zero impact. Your joints will crumble on race day if you train on a bike instead of running for your marathon training.
Cycling as cross training is fine, but your body needs to adapt to the huge amount of pounding it will receive over the miles of running a marathon. You're not just training your heart and lungs. You're also training your musculo-skeletal system to deal with the massive volume of impact shock it will receive from the ground while running all those miles on race day.
