- Video from the first weekend of the WSR's Spring Gala which featured visiting locos
No.777 'Sir Lamiel', USA Transportation Corps S160 No.6046 and arguably the star of the show, the Great Western Steam Railmotor No.93. Despite a gloomy forecast the weather was much better than anticipated and it was good to meet up with that fine cameraman Bob Masterman at Washford. The video was filmed between Friday 16th. and Monday 18th. March 2013 and includes the following scenes;
GW 2-8-0 No.3850 departing Minehead with a goods working
777 'Sir Lamiel' - Churchlands, Woolston Moor and Washford
7828 'Odney Manor' (renamed as 'Norton Manor') - Roebuck Gate, Crowcombe Heathfield, Bye Farm and Blue Anchor
6046 - Nornvis Bridge, Leigh Wood level crossing, Watchet and climbing Washford Bank near Bilbrook
93 - Minehead, Blue Anchor and Roebuck Gate
4160 - Minehead, Splash Point, Bye Farm and Blue Anchor
9351 - Crowcombe Heathfield, Castle Hill, Splash Point and Blue Anchor
6960 'Raveningham Hall' - Castle Hill and Leigh Woods level crossing.
Thanks to all the staff and volunteers of the WSR for a fine gala
Beautifully shot and expertly edited. A great slection of motive power and locations all add up to a wonderful video. You've made me determined to visit this line.
Beautifully filmed - congratulations. A delight to watch. Many thanks for sharing it.
Super video. Lovely to hear the sound edited properly as well as the video.
Some of the finest railway video photography I've seen. Very enjoyable.
Beautiful cover of beautiful gala. Thank you Austin.
Philippe
Excellent footage of a wonderful railway.
What an amazing film Austin, beautifully shot and edited. Well sought out locations and the crystal clear sound all added to the mix. Thank you for sharing. Regards Dale
Thanks Andrew, the Railmotor is superb and a great sight in action on this lovely line
Many thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed the video
Well done Austin , along with Bob and Steve think you 3 have done a good job covering the Gala
Thanks very much Bob, I don't know about it being the best video, I think everyone who films at these galas contributes something so we all get the benefit of the different filming locations used and build up a full story of the event. I am very pleased with the camera especially it's night shooting capability
Some nice memories for you there having travelled on the line in BR days. Your kind comments make the travelling around well worth while and it's my main hobby so I try to enjoy it whilst I can
A clever piece of editing for a most enjoyable video. Well done.
Thanks Noel, my wife and I love Somerset so we certainly enjoyed our brief visit and as a lover of all things GW it was good to get a little fix of chocolate and cream!
Excellent Austin. Very enjoyable. Lovely selection of shots. I like the departure shots from Minehead because you have the hill in background. All the best...Tim.
Smashing compilation, Austin. I'm due to go this weekend, Friday, Saturday (between main line steam) and Sunday, and you've wetted my appetite. Friday is starting to look like a washout, though, so I may just go Saturday and Sunday. Keith
Hey Austin!
You were down in my part of the world for a change. Can I echo Bob's sentiments - the whole sequence was superb as always. I hope you enjoyed your weekend here in Somerset.
Cheers,
Noel
Un grand merci Philippe, ce fut un événement très agréable.
Words don't come close describing the beauty you have captured here, bring back memories of a boy growing up in Watchet seeing and hearing these fine machines on a daily basis! thank you very much
Thank you very much for your kind comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video and that it brought back a few memories for you
I didn't grow up in Watchet but I did holiday with grandparents. Granddad was the caretaker in the council offices opposite the station. Fabulous for a young boy, a working harbour and wagons being shunted in the sidings.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it
Many thanks David, I think it's great to look back on all the videos and build up that fuller picture of the gala
Thanks Dale, we were very lucky to have a few bright spells for filming. It's a wonderful line.
Many thanks Chris, I do like the Railmotor, what a great piece of restoration that has been. Looking forward to seeing it coupled to it's trailer at Llangollen when I will have a ride on it.
Many thanks for your kind comments, they are much appreciated.
Beautiful series of shots ---Will have to visit there soon.
Thanks for making the effort to video, edit and post .
Thanks very much, a few odd glimpses of Spring here and there but I think Winter still has a sting in its tail!
Thanks Matt much appreciated
Thank you kindly Mike, it was a bit hectic and getting a soaking on Friday didn't bode too well but in the end the weather was much better than anticipated. The chief umbrella holder was only called upon twice!
Superlatives fail me Austin, that is without a doubt the best video of this weekend Gala by far....Just as I've got reasonable HD quality, your new camera produces breath taking results like this, and that coupled with your skills behind the lens, produces pure magic.
An astonishingly clear and perfectly produced piece of work.....Best wishes....Bob
That GWR steam railcar is a beauty!
Thanks Keith, I would normally have gone this weekend too but got greedy and want to do the SVR too. I hope the forecast is wrong as last weekend and you get some decent weather. Beware of some very muddy fields and paths to the line!
Beautiful!
Austin, That Camera is producing some fabulously clear shots and you are using it so well to frame some great scenes. It almost looked like spring had finally arrived. Thank you.
Thank you very much, I'm pleased you enjoyed it
Thanks Dan, I will certainly check out yours and other videos from the weekend over the next day or so
Thanks very much, only being there for the long weekend meant I tried to cram in as much as possible
A stunning mix of action and locations Austin (& Pam) You obviously had a busy weekend. Like the lineside shots from below track level Most enjoyable
regards
Mike
Brilliant coverage of the gala Austin, taken at nicely choosen locations with great skill .(C&A)
Good stuff Austin. Glad you had some reasonable weather.
Thanks very much Alan, as I said to Bob, something about it shining on the righteous!
Thanks very much, I would definitely recommend a visit to the WSR, well worth it and lots of footpaths cross the line at various points
Excellent series of shots Austin. Sir Lamiel looks good again, the S160 looks a bit of a beast and the Rail Motor is just superb. What a little gem that is - could watch it all day. I wonder what it rides like. Chris
Much appreciated Dave, thank you.
Many thanks Matt, not having a lineside permit now for the line forced me to seek out some different spots, so many footpaths criss cross the line that locations are pretty easily come by
Thanks Phil, yes the Railmotor and its trailer will be at Llangollen when I hope to have a ride on it. As you say, the star of the show.
Many thanks for your kind comments Andrew, 25 years seems an awfullly long time when you see it written down! I mostly use a Sennheiser MKE300 microphone and also have a Rode Videomic but I think the MKE300 gives slightly better crisper sound. Both mics have a 'dead cat ' windshield, if it is too windy I use an extension lead and place the mic. on the ground which helps under most conditions. You will certainly enjoy the X920
Fine filming and fine locos. All I remember seeing passing through Watchet late 50s early 60s were on change over days at Butlins and you might see a large Prairie with 6 on.
Many thanks for posting,
Thanks for your kind comments. I wish I had seen the line in the days of steam but it's good that it has been preserved
Thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated.
Thanks very much for your comments, I'm glad you enjoyed the video
Excellent sequence Austin from some good locations
Must agree about the whistle, imagine that echoing around Ais Gill or Shap if it ever went mainline! Thanks for your comments
Thank you, the weather did chop and change quite a bit over the weekend
Thanks for your very kind comments, much appreciated
Brilliant footage and video austin. liked. Matt
Thanks for your kind comments, the WSR is indeed one of the finest in the country
Thank you for your kind comments, I can well recommend a visit to the line, it has everything from seaside to countryside in some wonderful scenery
Thanks for your comments, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video
That's a nice shot of 6046 departing Watchet; a bit of change from the conditions Bob enjoyed in the same location.
nice video
Thanks very much for your kind comments
très jolie video, merci!!
Thanks very much John, I do like the S160's, would love to see one on the mainine sometime
It sure is, a great credit to all those who were responsible for her restoration
Thanks Steve, the camera is a Panasonic HC-X920, it hasn't taken much getting used to really as I was using the SD700 previously and the controls are pretty much the same. It's all a matter of time really getting used to the camera
Hello Austin,
This film is sublime!
25 years of lineside movie-making experience really shows in your work.
According to your website you started out on 8mm cine. You might be interested to know that the last railway filming I did was nearly 20 years ago on 16mm using a Bolex RX5. That was pretty anachronistic even then!
I want to start filming railways again and intend to get an X920. Can you advise on sound? I'm guessing you use an external directional mic and wind shield?
Thanks Austin
Glorious railway!
Indeed it is Jim, a wonderfully scenic line
Thanks Tim, it is a nice backdrop isn't it at Minehead, couple of years ago we stayed at a B&B near the church on the hill which had a wonderful view down onto the railway
Super. Rule 1 - when there's an S160, you MUST go where there's a "W" board!
-Might start a campaign to get rid of all those "pip squeak" whistles and fit some more chimes!
-only joking folks...
(They DO sound rather good though.........!)
Thanks Austin.
I also have a Hardback Book called The Railway Policeman.
The Story of the Constable on the Track.
Very well filmed BTW......!
What an amazing machine the 93 was. Never seen the like of before. It made me wonder how big the fire pan/boiler was?, how big the water tank and coal tender was?Does it have to be refilled at the end of each journey? also, is there a drivers cab at the other end.I assume there is .
At first I thought it was diesel powered until the driver opened up,what amazement , smoke and steam. Then I saw the rods on the leading wheels. Made me chuckle. A step up in technology of the time?.
Superb video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video. The Railmotor is a fascinating machine. You might be interested in this article which tells you a lot about these machines en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GWR_steam_rail_motors
Merci Denis pour vos aimables commentaires
It's a beautiful line and the steam railcar a pretty thing to look at but not to drive as I found out whilst moving her at her home whilst I was doing my regular volunteer work. She doesn't get time to stretch her wheels at home since she runs a small 1/4 mile line
Thanks for your interesting comments into operating the Railmotor. I can understand how difficult it must be to drive. Good that she can visit other railways to stretch her legs away from Didcot now and again
i was on the train at 13:00
GREAT to see a Southern loco at last - NOT gobbed-over with a BR scheme....hope springs eternal...! :-)
BR black does seem to be the popular choice at present sadly but I think it's always good to see the more colourful liveries from previous times
It is - and in most cases, the former liveries are what they ran in for most of their lives. The BR period was just they last few neglected years. When they were finally under the execrable BR, these locos were so filthy the BR 'colours' were usually undetectable anyway.....
I have the DORLING KINDERSLEY DK EYEWITNESS GUIDES Book of TRAIN.
Discover the story of railways - from the days of steam to the high - speed, sophisticated trains of today.
In association with THE NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM.
Some excellent stuff again Austin. Please check out my vids from the weekend if you haven't done so already. :) Cheers Dan
