Peppermint is very popular from Germany to Scandinavia, does wonders for the digestive system and there is no caffeine so you can drink it all day long.
Thank you for this wonderful video ! I feel you have taught me everything I was wanting to know about peppermint. Very easy instructions and pleasant to watch.
so helpful! i tried growing mint from seed a few weeks ago and it didn’t go too well. i just got a seedling so hopefully that one will stick around for me!
I took cuttings from some peppermint my Mom had growing on the edge of her yard. I rooted it and planted it on a bank and now the bank is loaded with pepperment. It's very invasive so if you are not growing in pots boy oh boy watch where you plant it because it takes over. It's great to have it. Nice garnish in summer drinks or steep a few leaves for a hot drink. I've never tried drying it. Thanks Diane for the video. So nice to start your own from seed for those who may not have access to cuttings.
thanks Pat.. they started out pretty slow but boy did they feel a pot out.. I think I will keep them in pots.. those I cut I just put in water instead of drying..
Thank you for the video. I use Peppermint flavored mints to help with anxiety and other health issues. I was wanting a way to grow my own and get away from tik tacs, altoids, and candies. Thank you for the video upload.
I planted some peppermint last week, just this week it is sprouting above ground but it looks like a blade of grass. No leaves just a few cm long tiny still but why no leaves yet? Is this peppermint or did something else fall into my pot and start growing or something? Been trying to find info online but cant find any pictures or information of anyone knowing about this. Would appreciate some help thanks! 😊
Hi Ted I water when dry to the touch , when I had these out in the greenhouse I could water everyday because it always dried out in a day provided we had a good amount of sun..
I have planted some seeds 8 days back but I don’t see any sprout yet. I love peppermint! I cut them and put them in my salad, I love them with onions, tomato and garlic it tastes so good. I dry peppermint and mix them with yogurt or sour cream and I also like to sparkle them on spaghetti soup. I liked watching your videos, Thank you! ❤️
Peppermint is also a fantastic way to repel rodents and other small animals. I use infuse it into vegetable oil and use that to apply it around the perimeter of the home. Once I did that, I finally stopped hearing the scratching in the walls! What a relief!! 😀😃😌😌
Thanks for the video. I gave it a thumbs up. Does peppermint use a lot of water? Also, I heard that it keeps mosquitoes at bay. Is that true or is it just an old wives tale?
Thanks for stopping by! As a pesticide, the primary active ingredient, menthol, has biocidal properties and is effective at controlling mites, mosquito larvae, and var- ious other pests. It also has repellent properties to insects, dogs, and cats. Peppermint oil is an effective antimicrobial. Peppermint plant needs a lot of water and cannot be grown commercially in non-irrigated farms with annual precipitation less than 1100 mm. Nearly all commercial peppermint farms are irrigated, especially before and during the summer months and between harvests.
I suppose I’m the only one asking if you’re saying “celery” for the rogue plant? My East Texas drawl didn’t hear celery, lol. Just wondering..Great video, tho!!!
its kinda like how people say things, may not be correct in some eyes but they get the jest of it.. kinda like warsh and wash.. people say it different here in the midwest..
HI Jerry,, in the past I have purchased shop lights at our local home and garden Menards.. there definitely is a difference so don't go to cheap like I did.. they did not last.. mine were always around 3000 lumens and did fine but you could do better yet by getting lights made for growing..
Plant mint in full sun or part shade. Depending on your climate, they can tolerate some shade during the hotter parts of the day.. Mint grows best in full sun to partial shade, should be planted early in the growing season and is generally hardy to -20° F. Mint prefers moist soil conditions, but excess water will promote root and leaf diseases.
will cling wrap need to be covering the pot untouched, until the seeds sprouts? or is it still needed to open it from time to time to add water or let the air in?
I planted some peppermint seeds, about a week ago, but i think i planted them a bit too deeply. Hope that atleast some germinate. Wish I'd watched this video, before I planted them.
I have been growing mine for 2 months now and they are still in sprouts stage. I did make a mistake and plant them very deep. When i noticed the mistake i moved the soil in hopes they come out to the top. They didn't but they have a problem growing.... I might try it again
Hi Thanks for the video. I was just yesterday looking for seeds or plants online. I bought two plants and can you believe I killed a peppermint plant. Yes I did last year. I think they like to be moist in a plastic pot. Well when the plants arrive in a few days Im going to try it again. If you give me any helpful hints for success I am all ears. Thanks for video.
HI Denise, yes they do like moisture.. they seem pretty easy .. they are in my hot greenhouse and I water them well few times a day.. keep them in a pot if you do not want them to spread.. watch the drainage holes they can send runners out of those holes.. good luck I am sure you will do great..
it would depend on your area... they just get invasive here ... but in the right place right climate they would be fine.. I just don't like invasive plants!
The thing I do not like is that my mint tastes off. It has a bergamot twang to it. Can anyone refer me to a good source to get good peppermint seeds? Is the variation of flavor because it is a hybrid? And how long will this perennial live? Since they are not supposed to make viable seed they should expire someday right?
I wish I had answers for you but I have also been told the peppermint seeds are now true peppermint.. so more research is needed to be done.. maybe contact someone that deals with herb growing all the time I know there is a few good ones here on youtube..
I am not sure Melissa.. some one told me they are not true peppermint anyway.. as they grow see how they develop.. I can't see them so hard to know from here..
@@dianemummvideos I greatly appreciate the response! The odd thing is that they all looked just like the seeds in your video. I downloaded a plant identification app and they are all different sorts of wildflowers. I don’t know how this happened but I was really looking forward to having it. Your video was the first that I watched when we started growing it a few months ago.
From my understanding, the seed won’t grow to be exactly the same like the parent plant, there will be some different characteristics from true peppermint
Why does it say online that peppermint cannot be grown from seed yet seed companies sell peppermint seeds this confuses me. I googled peppermint from seed and first pop up was it can't grow from seed but yet in this video u grew it from seed The internet is so confusing sometimes with information
@Diane Mumm Garden Videos ya I recently bought peppermint seeds from West coast seeds and planted them in my aerogarden and they're coming up on day 6 so this must be an old wives tale. I'm glad they came up and urs did well in that video too :) always like your videos especially on the indoor plants and also seed starting and also growing under led lights videos :)

I'm going to grow from seed for the first time this year, so this is very helpful! Thank you, Diane :)
Good luck!
What is your watering schedule? I’ve done some research on peppermints but none of them seem to agree on when to water them.

Thank you so much for this video. It gas helped me already. Keep up the inspiration!!!

Try this plant with hydrophobic system of plantation if it's work then wow you invented something new...😅
Thanks for the tip from seeds, warning if you live in Florida it grows like wild fire 🔥 🤣🤣🤣🤣
it does here as well that is why I do not plant in the ground.. 😎

nice video! 2 questions: what brand and specifications of shoplights do you use?
Would a fluorescent light of 6500K and 2000 lumens be enough?

it will depend on if it looks like it needs watered.. pretty much should keep the moisture in .. depending on your soil and how much you watered..

I just bought a peppermint plant (not seeds) to grow indoors and was wondering if I could use a rectangular pot for on my windowsill!
sure , make sure it has drainage holes and plenty room to grow..they do grow fast and spread nicely..
What's you plant a peppermint plant? Does it grow bag for the next year? Or does I have to replace it every year?
Peppermint is a perennial here in my area.. however can be invasive..
Thanks for sharing!!
My pleasure!!
You guys ever grow catnip for tea? Lemon balm is another good one.
no I have not.. how does it do for you?
Growing catnip as well as lemon catnip from seed atm.
I have been growing mine for 2 months now and they are still in sprouts stage.
I did make a mistake and plant them very deep. When i noticed the mistake i moved the soil in hopes they come out to the top. They didn't but they have a problem growing.... I might try it again
They do seem to start out slow.. I would trim them back so they would develop side shoots and grow better..
Is it okay if I use the normal house light that we have? The one that sticks in the roof? Or the light should be really close in the seeds?
may not be enough light nor close enough..
Thanks for the video
Thank You for watching? 👍
@@dianemummvideos You're welcome
how long do I leave the plastic on top?
Hi Michelle I left the plastic over them until I seen a good percentage germinate.. this helps hold the moisture in as well ..
Really helpful Ty
Glad it helped!
What does the sand do?
sand helps spread the small seeds..
Can we use the same methods for spearmint?
yes should do fine..
Hi, can i start now ? I live in Chicago, so can i start now indoors?
Yes you can! sorry this is late have been away.. I like to start growing indoors in Feb - March..
@@dianemummvideos I start mine May 1st every year. Your timing is perfect right now. By June 1 you can transplant outdoors. IN A POT!!!

If they need light for germination why put soil on top, wouldnt that mean less light reaches the seeds?
good question.. right.. you do not need to cover with soil.. I have a habit of adding a little bit anyway.. but not necessary..
The seeds also need to remain moist to germinate. The very top of the soil dries out easily. Sprinkling on some vermiculite helps.
How many does it take to grow
After how many days it germinated
The video stated around 6 -8 days..
Why would you not want to let them spread?
I was thinking they would be great at my camp where there’s mice running around.. they hate peppermint
it would depend on your area... they just get invasive here ... but in the right place right climate they would be fine.. I just don't like invasive plants!

Why do you mix in sand?
because the seed is so small and helps to spread the seed in my pots..:)
The best way to extract the mint flavor is to muddle the leaves
thank you..
I'm confuse, I read somewhere that peppermint does not produce Viable seeds?
hmm , that I have not heard.. would be interested to know.. I did have someone tell me that these peppermint pkgs are not true peppermint..

Why Google say peppermint can't be grown by seeds, because it's hybrid plant
Also, I'm hearing peppermint might deter wasps and such. Would be great what with allergic reaction to wasps.
