You’re right Chris - all this is correct. It may upset some people, but everything you said is true. I have a copy of the “liturgy of the hours” on my book shelf. Several years ago I was diligent in praying it for about a year. It’s time for me to start that again. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this talk Chris, for sharing your heart and about an aspect of your prayer life. There is such a depth & power to liturgy when it is said in a prayerful way, you can feel the presence of Jesus in it. This is something that is missing in some charismatic churches today, as you have said. So cheers for sharing and encouraging us to go deeper with God in reciting and meditating on these age old words of liturgy. God bless you.
My husband says this is similar to a lecture he heard recently by Rowan Williams . I enjoyed your explanation of the rosary and found your description of Lectio Divina helpful. Great stuff! Thank you Chris. The Lord Bless you.
Thank you for these thoughts. I have been trying to wrestle out that verse in Ezekiel for about 5 years knowing it was speaking to me. In the last few years I have found myself backing away from charismatic formats (which I love) because it still left me wanting. Church wise I seem to be heading back to my roots of over 40 years ago, reluctantly at first, but I know I have to find something there....
This is interesting. I don’t fully understand it all yet and I shall need to listen again…however, I recently went on holiday and just before I felt God telling me He wanted to take me deep into the psalms whilst away. So I read some of them each day, and as a result I never felt closer to God and more in His care, dwelling in the shelter of the Most High finding rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He also seemed to be telling me He wants me to adopt children which is a bit mad so that’s gone on the back burner for now 🙃 I like this idea of tapping into the ancient though
Even the ancient ways of herbs and supplements and the ancient paths of how people survived etc. It has all been coming at me and ive wondered what is going on? Now i understand what is going on . I wonder if warfare will go back to horses and crossbows!!!!
For about 6 weeks or so , 2 young ladies have been coming to our small Anglican Church Sometimes there are 3 of them They used to go to a more modern church but wanted to experience other ways of worship , ie the communion service Explains what you were saying today
I was just wondering about rosary beads when you mentioned them.Jonathan Roumie uses them all the time and gets quite emotional with it. Ive been pondering about the comunion meal. I believe its now more than just a remembrance and a Symbolic meal. Protestantism is under reform!!!
The word "remembrance" has a Hebrew rendering "zikkaron". To the Jewish mind it means a memorial offering. (cf. Acts 10:4). Remembrance means entering into a covenant relationship.
Chris, your approach to preaching Christianity is very different to most other churches. Though I fully support your stance. Many of the local mainstream churches continue to suggest that the Bible is merely a metaphor that can be construed by the onlooker? Well this doesn't sit very well with those of us that pray and connect with the father? In fact most of us Christians out here choose to align with the Bible in every way possible. The Bible is not a metaphor of instruction. In fact the Bible should be read and ingested at grass roots level?
Thats a rather dissapointing thing to hear " the Bible is merely a metaphor " to be interpreted as one wishes i expect. Thats really how weak wishy washy Christianity evolves, thats shocking. 🙏
Im Catholic more Orthadoxy in leaning theology though, I use the chotki sometimes the orthadox prayer rope, its allowed by Catholic &, Orthadox as is the rosary for Orthadox, its all about meditative prayer and devotion and reverence, more structure as much or as little as you can do as in fasting, and office of prayer, its structured, and mentally helpful. I really dont think one can read the Church fathers and remain Protestant. FYI we dont all worship the Pope, we do respect the office of it, as in a head speaker, but the Pope can say what he wants but cant change the doctrine of Faith or magesterium teaching and protection. 🙏🕊✝️
What you are saying is fine is if what comes from the lips comes from the heart. More often than not it’s just words. When I was 20 I was hungry. I was searching. With my mother I went to a high Church of England Church. Through the teaching of the church was I saved? NO! I bought all sort of books. One book was “mr jones meet the master” by Peter Marshall. I one of the chapters was about the Our Father prayer. Peter Marshall asks “how many people say that prayer and actually know and understand what they are praying.
@patriciasenior8487 and @ChrisWickland (thank you for this enlightening teaching, btw👍): I regard the "Lord's Prayer", and I wrote on it in our Parish Magazine, pre-Covid, as "The Most Dangerous Prayer in the World!" because I felt that they way was taught at my church - don't get me wrong, it wasn't too bad - was very lightweight. It gets gabbled out as, I felt, a ' lucky charm', or a catch-all prayer, even a Harry Potterism, in modern thought! It has six main components, and each one is very deep. The second clause, for instance - do we *really* understand or even know what we are asking? What if what G-d the Father does in response is not what we want, expect or desire? We are told by Jesus that if two or three agree on anything in His Name, and that the Father gives us the 'desires of *our* hearts', yet Scripture further teaches that we are being changed, by the Holy Spirit, from glory to glory to be 'more like in the image of Christ" - surely that would be our hearts and therefore *the desires of OUR hearts would be HIS desires - NOT ours, despite what WE think!* Dangerous, because we ask and don't get because, as James writes, our hearts in the wrong place. Yet, G-d the Father loves us enough not to go entirely without - David writes in Psalms about not seeing the righteous go without bread, at least! So, yes, although I feel uncomfortable about C of E Anglo-Catholicism or anything liturgically and traditionally Catholic (Mariology, saint- and angel-worship, ect), I understand, at least some of, the basic foundations upon which they are based, of which many of the churched of old may have forgotten, and many younger don't know of. This comes through teaching, but there is also the *same* danger that the Hebraic Roots movement has about rituals and "vain repetitions", something mentioned by the prophets, about "lips worshipping G-d, but hearts being far from Him" and He not actually listening to prayer *because* of that. Care is necessary that these things are not demanded of to 'prove' one's faith - again as James points out regarding these things as being 'works'. I will end here as I think I may be repeating what Ps. Chris has said or alluded to; the old ways may be good, and a comfort, to remember as the 'old altars' as Abraham was directed to return to, as memorials of why and how he got to where he was, and who led him to it. But not to make them 'hopeful vanities'. All this in my opinion, of course. Hope this makes some sort of sense. Shalom and Merry Christ-Mas!
@@chrismaguire3667 As a Catholic I have never worshipped an Angel in my life, Mariology is a devotion to the Theotokos which I respect, prayer to her is asking for her intercession, not everyone is into it. For example speaking in tongues I witnessed at an independent church i visited a long time ago on my path, I though was useless and bordering on demon possessed, an outward ridiculous show. Such a variety in practices, a shame really I feel. 🙏
