I recently Watched the Jerk, and Fell in love with this scene between
Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters.
After much searching online I wasn't happy with the quality of the videos that are to be currently found on the internet,
so I thought I would go ahead and upload a high quality version, ending the video on Steve Martins wonderfully delivered line.
I retain no rights or ownership of this clip, I merely put it up so People could enjoy this magical song. From this equally Magical Movie.
Also feel free to follow me on Instagram where I post my Photography

We should really cover this film for the podcast.
You guys really have to breakdown this song for at least 10 min. Song is out of nowhere, but Steve martins and Bernadette’s vocals are so great. And the trumpet solo was an amazing touch. It hits like blue shadow in the 3 amigos
@@That_oneguy_manethis feels like a heavy podcast recommendation.
@@maxington26 well there’s also background info to it, Steve wanted it in the movie but no one else did and he fought for it to be in the movie
@@That_oneguy_mane thx man - always a good day when a quality recommendation is received. Always loved this scene. Lots. I'm on it! Cheers
It’s not a trumpet it’s a cornet
this scene is the definition of gentle comedy
lol
A skill that seems lost and forgotten these days. Sigh.
So true
I wish I could save a comment
@JCyous an ignoramus!!!
*just grabs a trumpet out of nowhere
Brilliance . Frickin genious. And totally hilarious

Somehow one of the most romantic scenes in a movie ever.
Its bittersweet because Steve and Bernadette were both shining stars but belonged to someone else, but still were in love for this short moment
Fyi Steve and Bernadette were dating when they made this movie makes it more authentic the way they look at each other. What a great movie!
Albert Einstein
And Steve Martin was married with Victor Tennant during filming of L.A. Story. She played his love interest Sara.
Love their chemistry! ❤️
Nothing compares to you Sinead O'Connor
Nothing Compares to you Sinead O'Connor
Wow, who couldn't fall in love with Bernadette, what a lovely catch.
Mom used to sing this to me when it was time to settle down to sleep. When I got to singing age, I learned the harmony and we sang together. Now it's bittersweet to hear...I really really miss you mom...😢💜💔
i hate when youtube comments make me cry
😔🥺
..darned onions... 🥲
😇🙏💗🙏💗🙏
Weird, I got a Lullaby vibe too. the harmony is Soothing.
No matter how many times I watch this, I always lose my shit when she pulls out the trumpet
Hell yes. Bernadette with her little schoolgirl pout pulling out the trumpet to belt out the ending was comedic and musical brilliance. And i always lose my shit when somebody uses the phrase 'lose my shit' hahahbaha
SparklyFeces *Cornet
I was gonna say that
right! hahahahahahahaha
and that face steve martin makes seals it.
I just saw this movie for the first time and it was fantastic.
I was immediately taken by surprise by how sweet and sincere this song was, coming out of nowhere -- particularly just after the humorous part preceding it.
By the end of this scene, I was in love with Marie, too.
Watched it a bit ago and also rlly enjoyed it…rlly stood out to me I just wish more people knew abt it 😭
“You mean I’m always gonna be this color!?”
Lmao
"All I need is this chair, that's all I need. This chair and this lamp" One of my all time favourite movies. Timeless classic! -The Jerk
the ashtray and the paddle game and the remote control, that's all i need.
I quote this often in my life and far too few people know the reference.
I'm picking out a thermas for you.
And my dog! No.. I don’t need my dog.
True!
The way they stare at each other is so sweet.
Cuz they were dating at the time
The chemistry between them in this scene:
I wish all marriages could be like this all the way through. It’d make life a whole lot easier.
Fun fact They were a couple during this movie
Why does that catch in Bernadette's voice when she sings the "I" in "My honey I know..." break me every single time I watch this? The whole thing is so sweet it must have induced scores of diabetic comas, but that is the part that gets the waterworks going for me every time.
It got me, too. Here's to the romantics who still appreciate sweet and funny. ❤😊
Me2
literally feels like a ghost passing thru me every time i hear it
@@jimbailey5681 Your fragile masculinity is showing.
Because her voice sounds beautiful!!
Sweet song, characterized just as it should be. And c'mon, can we admit that Ms. Peters was SO adorably appealing in every way here?
Bernadette Peters was the sweetheart for everyone...I had a crush on her....
The scene sums up the movie so well. A touching down to earth moment where someone can suddenly start up a trumpet out of nowhere, having you laugh your ass off, then be pulled right back in to the drama only to be gut-punched by the next joke.
My abusive father, when he was clean would get emotional to this part of this movie and I would sit next to him in his bed and we would get emotional together, after 6 years I’ve found it again and it makes me cry :(
That was one of the happy times I had at that house, it makes me feel happy again, but get sad at the same time like crying and chuckling? Anyways I hope everyone is having a great 2021 :)
I wish you had more happy memories with your dad, hope you are doing good 💕✨
@Lea that's fucked up
@@Lea-mq6ebHoping and praying you are doing well these days.
"He hates these cans. Stay away from the cans"
"You mean I'm gonna stay this color?"
She is the sweetest little thing
the crack in her voice when she says “My honey I know” gives me chills
My favorite scene in the film, for a majority of the movie I was laughing hysterically but for some reason when those waves hit and they began singing I teared up. The beautiful harmonizing and setting seemed to capture a moment in time for me. Thanks for the upload!
I read that these two were dating in real life while they were filming the movie and it really shows in the chemistry of this scene
Favorite duet in a movie
Same
It did that to me the first time I saw it, still does, and just did. There's such tenderness there.
Yep. Still my favorite part. Bernadette was always such a doll.
"I didn't want to get spit on me" Hahahahaha!!!!!!
Meiji loolz
LOL
😅
One of the greatest punchlines ever
That killed me xD
Such a sweet scene; the harmonies, the way Bernadette looks so longingly at Steve while he's singing, a really nice little love song.... and then the trumpet--Snaps me right back into comedy mode every time
Bernadette was such a goddess in this movie, beautiful and hilarious and she looks incredible even today in her early 70's.
I also love how Steve sells her randomly producing the trumpet, he stops playing thinking the songs over, suddenly 🎺, gives a...... Ok look to his left and then starts playing again. Perfect scene
I sing this to my granddaughter every chance I get. She’ll be 6 months soon😊
She plays all of the right fingerings. She might even be actually playing the cornet solo. Either way, I just fell madly in love with Bernadette Peters all over again!
@DeeInLEYEtined Won Steve Martin was definitely playing, he's a pretty skilled musician. It certainky seems she was also playing the horn part, but I cant tell for sure.
Bernadette is a musician, I wouldn't be surprised if she's actually playing.
@DeeInLEYEtined Won I'm pretty sure she was, even if they had to redo it in post. Both She and Steve Martin were accomplished musicians in their own right.
dlm9293
Surely they are accomplished musicians, but...
It’s Lyle Ritz on ukulele. You can also clearly see around 0:25 that Steve’s strumming doesn’t match with what you hear. Bernadette Peters has said that she doesn’t play the cornet on the soundtrack.
Keep in mind:
- It is exceedingly difficult do a good take of acting, singing, and playing all at the same time. Therefore, they only concentrated on acting.
- Films were often overdubbed in the studio, back then. And this scene is outside, at the beach, with all kinds of uncontrollable noises.
Conclusion: They probably played back a studio recording of the song during filming. The actors sang and played along with it to match the timing, and it didn’t matter if they were any good because that sound recording wasn’t used. As long as their acting was good.
All the sounds, including the song, were added later in editing. Maybe, just maybe, the original sound was used starting just after 2:08. You can hear how the sound changes and it is not an elegant cut.
Why's nobody else talking about this
Aww Bernadette is so young! Steve...looks the same, always.
righteousgroove he really does
I wish this was on Apple music. I think about this version often.. like everyday. I hum this melody in my head during certain situations when I feel my anxiety start to rise. Being a military guy sometimes I do it subconsciously out loud and people look at me crazy lol. It gets the job done though. I love this song.
Apple is garbage. Don't base your life on that crap.
That's beautiful 💪🏾🤙🏾✊🏾
BEST Steve Martin film... EVER...
Stanley Kubrick thought so as well.
He said he hated it.

This exact one.
"why didnt you i didnt want to get spit on me " most manliest gentleman dialogue ever given to a mortal man.
i swear this movie will never get old....ever!!
Classic film.. The new films can't beat these old classics and never will!

+Aultun white Lol! Aww thanks! I took a picture of this beautiful bird and wanted to post it as my picture
Aultun white awwwwwwwww
I love the intimacy, even in the face of the campiness. I especially love when she picks up the cornet and starts wailing...
I've listened to the real song and this version, and the Steve martin version is so much better
People forget that Steve Martin has some serious musical talent too
One of the sweetest renditions of this tune ever...
indeed
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking about how truly sweet and precious love can be. Many years later, it still slaps in the same way 💛💛💛
I cry myself to sleep to this here and there it just reminds me of my happy place with an old lover just put this on and close my eyes and fall asleep
i love how she just pulls out her trumpet... i didn't realize she was carrying one...
yeah,that's good.
Its actually a cornet. Like a bugeler's horn but with valves like a trumpet.
She wasn't carrying one. That's what makes it so hilarious when she pulls one out and starts playing. Just a great scene and a beautiful song.
Yes, everything else in the movie makes so much sense.
Bernadette, wherever you are, know that you are also here, in my heart, where you'll always be... such stunning, magical beauty!
As I do...She was more than just beautiful...she was so sweet...which is more important than beauty....
Wow, I love that first shot of Bernadette Peters.
I love the way they look at each other.
*brings out random cornet during date*

Im here. TIME TO BLAST YOUR TRUMPET INTO THE SAXAPHONES EARS
One of the most hilarious, adorable, and precious moments in film history!!!
Loved this movie since I was a kid. And there is something about how they sang this song it seemed so genuine so real that you felt as if you were watching two people and not a movie
That's a really good way to put it. That's exactly how I felt too. Like I was legit watching two people in love instead of a random movie.
They were dating
Without this scene the film wouldn’t have felt so complete. It’s nice to see Navin act as if he isn’t a moron for a couple of minutes and makes their relationship believable. At the end when it seems like they’re never going to see each other again it actually makes the audience sad and without this bit I don’t think I would have gave quite as much of a shit
Agreed. You needed the sweetness to cut the almost potty humor in the rest of the film. Without their relationship the movie seems kinda mean spirited and you end up not liking Mavin at all. This makes a cartoon into a human.
This is my absolute favorite scene of any movie ever. It's so beautiful. Everything about it is perfect. The comedy aspect of it is just amazing.
Bernadette Peters is such an amazing actress!
I recognize the looks she's giving him.
That look of longing as she looks at him which changes to "oh everything is fine" when he catches her eye... And the change back to the longing look when he looks away.
Who would’ve thunk a cornet, and a uke, and a coupla comic genius’s could create such magic!? Plus, all the film craftwork that goes into it! Thank you for the background of waves that help narrate this timeless love song. Superb film making!
That trumpet solo at 1:31 always gets me. Awesome!
One of the most beautiful moments in the history of cinema
Their voices produced great harmony.
Bernadette is so beautiful. She's absolutely timeless
One of the funniest movies of all time.
love this movie
maybe THE funniest!
My favorite comedy
My favorite line in the is movie: "You mean I'm ADOPTED??"
Beautiful. Two beautiful people, great melody and simple harmony. Music at its simplest and best.
My grandfather played this for me while I was learning to play the ukulele and it will always be his song to me
Nov 1st 2021 and my heart ❤️ just skipped a beat because I use to play this song for my daughter when she was 2 taking a bath 🛁 and I haven’t played it for years .. she’s 11 now and just stepped out of the shower and came in my room with a big smile 😊 and said … Daddy I remember that song 😭🥰🥰🥰
Parents PLAY these songs for your Children … Pass on the Love 💕 and Magic 🪄
Most definitely! And dream a little dream sung by Mama Cass
Steve’s reaction when Bernadette pulls out the trumpet is the reason he is a comedy Titan. In a film that’s filled with so much slapstick (also expertly performed) something so subtle really shows his mastery of the craft.
wow! Bernadette Peters was a HONEY!
This is just breathtakingly lovely.Reminds me of my dear, late buddy. He loved this.I wish he was here to sing it with me x
I couldn't love this more.
the moment he hears the trumpet and the look on his face, then just starts strumming again. brilliant
this song knocked me out when I saw the Jerk. Perfect including the trumpet solo!
Next time someone calls you a jerk, thank them.
Most importantly, Peters is really playing that trumpet.
Just this song…that’s all I need
Melts my heart.
CLASSIC romance at it's finest !
I was randomly hearing this song at a coffee shop then I remembered a moment in The Jerk and came right over. Such a memorable scene.
Always loved the way Bernadette Peters sang here.
Without a doubt one of Hollywood's greatest moments.
Thanks Steve and the lovely Miss Bernadette Peters.❤🍒🍇🍎🍉
One of Hollywood's most romantic scenes
This song makes me cry every time.
So sweet and gentle a song, then out comes the trumpet Full bore! Magical! :)
My favorite thing about this whole scene is how he can say something so poetic and then follow it up with something so goofy.
“I didn’t wanna get spit on me”
I laugh every single time.
This is one of my favorite moments in all of cinema.
Wish I could thumbs up this clip more than once
This song means so much to me as a child. My families home burnt down when I was in the 3rd grade. My mother and her friends got together with a camera and recorded the all time famous 'all I need!' scene thru this house. All I need is this vacuum (melted to oblivion), all I need is this lamp! (exploded and sent shards about), etc. It was hilarious. I'm so glad my parents made Steve Martin an important figure in my life
When I heard this song on American Horror Story, I instantly thought of this scene.
Love this scene!!! It inspired me to play the very song on the acoustic guitar.
I just learned on my ukulele last night.feels good
what are the chords?
@@spartanguitarist6579 Can't give all off the top of my head. Here on UA-cam type in Tonight You Belong To Me Acoustic and look for David Pots that teaches it
I sang this song to my love on our first ever date. I found it so beautiful but now I can't hear it without crying as we are no longer together. I can only think of how true the lyrics ring with how come the dawn, they'll be gone. I don't think I'll ever truly recover, but the song does bring me some ease. Loved this movie and will forever love this song, even with all the other memories that are brought along.
From 1:13 to 1:17, Bernadette Peters' eyes look truly sincere, I don't think she was acting! That's exactly how my wife USED to look at me before kids came into the picture!
you're right. dat face
Dr.Hannibal Lecter Tell me about it. I had a good run, tho.
Steve and Bernie used to date...
WWETheDog i dont know why but your comment has really touched me
taulant morina Maybe you can relate on some level. Or maybe you just pity me, lol.
I've just gotta talk about the timing here. If you notice, when Bernadette picks up the Bugle and starts playing, Steve slightly turns his head in shock but comes right in on time to give her a backing track.
This scene is so fucking perfect.
Love how she takes out the trumpet. This is my all time favorite movie..as think I've seen it more times then any other movie. So silly, sappy at times and hysterical at other times.
Ryan Young Its in my top 5 or 6 all time.
This is one of my favorite movie 😢scenes of all time ❤
This is one of the most perfect comic scenes ever made! It makes me cry, laugh, and drop my jaw.
And Bernadette's trumpet-syncing is as good as their lip-syncing, even doing proper vibrato and getting most of the fingerings correct. No doubt she is an actual trumpet player. (No one in a movie actually sings/plays musical numbers; the sound is too difficult to get correct. It's much easier to record music in a studio and play it back while the actors sing/play along.)
So you know for a fact it was her that played this? I was wondering who played the cornet in this.
@@WrestlingErnestHemingway Bernadette knows how to play the trumpet and wanted to do it, but Carl Reiner (the director) said no, so she is syncing in this take. Very very well I might say. I never understood why she wasn't allowed to actually play it.
This made me giggle and tear up the first time I saw it. Thank you Steve Martin ❤️
One of the most, if not the most romantic songs EVER!
I purchased a ukelele and learned how to play just because of this song.
I also love this scene and Steve and Bernadette's version of this sweet song...thanks so much for sharing.
This scene.. It is one of the most vivid memories I had as a child. I'm 21 now.. But I have hummed this song all my life.
This movie was one of my favorites as a wee lad...This movie was one of the first movies where, as a human not-quite-six-feet-tall, I first felt what romance should be between a man and a woman - and it was a comedic film...
I gotta tell my 27 year old daughter about this movie. A real cinematic treasure.
Legendary scene, one of the best in comedy history
Me too - and ended up buying my first ukulele as a result. As I write this, I've had the uke less than 24 hours and have already managed to learn all the chords from vids on UA-cam. Having HUGE fun :o)
Steve Martin thought this scene was very sweet. He was hoping audiences of the day would feel the same way. However, he was disappointed that most audiences got up to get popcorn during the song. As a kid, i never cared for it either. Today, however, i think its a touching scene.
One of the best scenes in movie history. I’m not arguing about it.
I was backpacking through Mexico back in 1980 when the film premiered over there.
I went to see it at a theater and the jokes were simply whooshing past everyone's head. When Peters pulls out the trumpet I died laughing alone in a theater with some 50 very confused movie goers.
When she pulls out the trumpet it 's unexplainable and sublime.
beautiful movie and beautiful scene. back then we all loved steve martin and I had a boy crush on bernadette peters, so was just so cute. remember the escargot scene, lol
absolutely magical
