Can A Game With 1 Level Be Good? | 1 Screen Platformer + 1SP: Prologue Game Review

- Welcome to Steam Sequence, a series where I attempt to play and review as many Steam games in alphabetical order as possible to sort the Trash from the Treasure.
This means that I'm playing through all the terrible games so that you don't have to.
Please enjoy my suffering.

In case you're wondering, Steam organizes games starting with punctuation first, then numbers, and then the actual alphabet. It may be some time before I reach the letter "A" on my journey!

I miss the thumbnail border, it makes this video feel more random and not a part of steam sequence
This one is just a test, and we may change it back depending on how the video performs 👍
edit: we've switched to a more minimal border for now!
I really like how they managed to fit several different goals (collect orbs, unlock all the checkpoints, clear out the darkness) in one level, making it work for each of the goals. Definitely an interesting game design challenge.
Feels like the kind of concept that would be great for a game jam
I'd say, since this challenge is already ridiculous, lean into that and keep to the alphabetical order. It might also be interesting to see how someone experiences the games in a series out of it's intended order.
That's my current line of thinking - why not lean into the already silly nature of the channel
I really like how ever character drastically changes both the gameplay and the winning conditions.
More platformers should do that instead of either only having one player character or making all characters carbon copies of each other besides the occasional glide or higher jump.
Also the star menu reminds me of Overwatch, at least the text and the character placement make me think about the Play of the Game Screen in that game.
ooh, the 1 screen platformer games! I forgot about them. I played the original 1SP when it came out, and did some beta-testing on the Prologue game when it got release back in 2020.
You mentioned speedrunners, and I agree those games are perfect for speedruns. When 1SP came out it did have some speedrunning community around it, but it's not really active nowadays. As for Prologue, it seems I am the only one who recorded a speedrun for it, at least here on UA-cam. You can check my run if you wish, it was almost as perfect as I could make it.
I mentioned that I did some beta-testing on Prologue, along with a few other speedrunners. There were a few bugs that we found and got fixed later; but the most major one was being able to teleport between checkpoints at the start of the game, without activating them first. You could teleport straight to the final checkpoint, and finish the game in about 20 seconds lol.
🤣🤣🤣
Well, that's what beta testing is for after all!
Cool to see comments like this. It's a good reminder that these obscure games are being seen.
Ohh nice! I (the channel editor) started playing prologue when editing the video, because it was free and so far i've gotten to the 6th best time on the leaderboards. The game can get annoying sometimes, but it sure is fun to speedrun
I always have respect for devs who make short games, it takes a lot more bravery and confidence in their own game design since on steam anyone can refund anything if they have played for less than 2 hours. So to make a game thats playtime is less is to have enough confidence in their own skills in game design to not have be worried that people will want to refund their game.
Absolutely great point. I love it when I walk away from a game feeling satisfied that I got good value, even if it was a super short game, simply because it was a high quality experience
@@Graeldon Linelith by Patrick Traynor is the perfect example of this. Only took one hour but it was one of the best hours of puzzle gaming I've had
I love the Robot Wants vibes of this, even if it doesn't have the metroidvania aspect of that title. The same instant-respawn, single-level design, precision platforming, and fairly short runtime with a lot of speedrun potential.
Speaking of Robot Wants, fantastic series, today bundled in a remaster/remake/compilation on Steam as Robot Wants It All with so many new features, but originally a series of free Flash games. Excited to see you get to it in the coming centuries.
Thank you so much. I had no idea there was a Steam version of the Robot Wants games and probably never would have found out if it wasn't for your comment.
@@INNR_CLMTY You're so welcome. I think I found it one day while searching old Flash games on Steam just to see if any were getting ported and Robot Wants It All was an incredibly pleasant surprise to see was coming. It's both the games we remember and upgraded in many ways.
knowing that the in a bit there are going to be like 70+ of those "100 hidden cats" games makes me so interested
like, are you really going to review all of them and maybe group them by developer? or just ignore a chunk of them since they are repeats of the same gameplay?
Current plan is to group them by developer.
ALL of the games will be played, but the review likely won't talk about every single one, unless some of them actually do something to stand out
i think for games series with entries whose names are out of order you can get away with playing/reviewing them in chronological order rather than alphabetical order, especially if youll be putting all the reviews in one video
But then we'd miss out on insanity (=
Speedrun type games are so interesting to me even though I'd never play them tbh
The visual style and jumping physics really remind me of the game "1001 Spikes."
Before watching... This is the first game featured here that I actually have in my library! Haven't played it yet though, will be neat to see if it's any good...!
It's always fun when I stumble upon a game that someone has actually played before, or at least owns!
@@Graeldon Yeah, for sure...!
Alright, it seems like something I'd consider checking out when I need some more mindless, but skill-oriented game to play between bigger, more emotionally impactful experiences. Pretty cool though
Not only do you have to reach the letter a first but also the combination of as so yeah...got a long time to figure things out
(11:20) Nice, the dual thumbs-ups aren't covered up by the end cards this time.
So, while not perfect, these do seem like nice short and sweet games, with a low price for the first one, and the prologue to the second one being free. I also hope that they eventually finish the second game and give it a good amount of polish. (Insert the Polish flag colors here. :P)
I'd say if you tackle a series such as assassin's creed you should play it in chronological order, just as it is intended to be.
Oh dang, what a neat concept! Congrats on cutting your time in half with just the second run, games will skill ceilings like this make me too nervous to play very well. I fully agree with Nadia Stormhammer being a kickass name; glad to see some non-Larrys present! While I'm sad the second game won't ever be released as there's so much potential (thank you for reaching out to the dev, I originally entered the comments section to see if anyone joined the discord or the like to inform us on updates), seeing the double thumbs-up at the end is a treasure that makes me smile. Love your videos!
Who are those remarkably cute fellows in your avatar!? I love them!
Also, you're right about Nadia Stormhammer - one of the best names I've ever heard. Great first impression for these games.
@@Namadu7 Oh man, thank you so much for the compliment! Insert the obligatory "I didn't make this character, someone else I know did", but I did do this art myself as my profile picture! His name is Lucien! Thank you so much!!
I hope Graeldon unearths another really epic name sometime in the future! So far, Nadia takes the prize for first, second, and third place!
@@aaronhulsey1135 Oooooh, Lucien! Safe to say, I'm a fan of Lucien already. :D Wonderful art of him!
oh this is a lot like the Robot Wants flash games, you were a robot in one big world with enemies or obstacles and reaching the end goal in a quick time was the idea of the game. this game is kind of like a sick cleaner take on that i really feel this Dev could have the skills go to somewhere if they used them well
Unrelated to this video: I just realized that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy comes before Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy alphabetically. That's going to be fascinating when/if you get to Apollo since there will be a lot of context you'll be missing out on.
Can't wait for Among us but with Ghosts in the next Video xD
Yay, an actual thumbs-up rating! And these actually look fun, might have to try them out!
This game is just what I need right now, thanks for bringing it to my attention!
One thing I love about all your videos is the excellent choice of background music. It really fits the theme of each game and is one of my favorite parts of your reviews.
Thanks! I used to only use music from the game itself, but after finding one with either no music or only one track, I've had to get a bit creative with finding appropriate music to use
There were games like these on the now-defunct Xbox 360 indie game store (the one where people would release their homebrew). They were 99 cents a pop and I assume they're lost media by now. Sadly.
Looks awesome, nice art!
The art direction in this one was pretty top-notch!
Interesting thing I noticed about this game; it apears to be using the same asset pack as 1001 Spikes and also has a similar vibe. 1001 Spikes is just like 1 Screen Platformer, except it has over 10 charcters, each with a different ability/playstyle, and dozens of levels. It's also tough as nails and might require dozens, if not hundreds, of deaths on certain levels. One level is infamous for having a pixel perfect jump that also requires good timing, so good luck once you get there.
So what's the plan if Part 2 of this game ever does get released?
I reached out to the dev, and they actually responded, saying that they have no intentions of finishing the game.
If they did though, it would go into a backlog of games for me to revisit in the future
I'm so happy for you that you got a legitimately good game!
Interesting platforming series. One screen but pack as much into the screen as possible. I wonder how many people refunded the first game after beating it. (Really wish Steam's refund policy for short games was more nuanced but that would require more effort on their part than carte blanche less than 2 hours refund). Wouldn't be surprised if that's why a second proper game never comes. Either that, or just not enough people picked it up.
Honestly with a lil more polish, they could have made an amazing platformer right up there with I Wanna Be The Guy
I think it's gonna be disappointing when Graeldon gets to Assassin's Creed or other AAA games. I've seen them played and reviewed SO many places already, I wish we could just skip them in favor of these interesting little games.
Never fear, those games are at least 10 years away
Wait but won't these games have more than the minimum number of reviews? @Graeldon
Minimum review number only applies to the livestreams. For the main series anything is fair game
missed opportunity to call the sequel "2 Screen Platformer"
what if in the hypothetical world where this existed had you swap planes
What does the review percentage at 0:18 mean ? The game is at very positive on Steam, and I always thought this numbers were a way to show the players reviews before the actual review.
It's the percentages of the total thumbs up and thumbs down of all the games reviewed in the series so far, to give an idea of the average quality of a Steam game, and to show series progression
@@GraeldonOh I see, thank you for the explanation !
Honestly, when you get to a long series like Assassin's Creed, where the names are all over the place, I think it might be best if you just ignore the alphabetical order and play them in release order. The vast majority of people aren't going to look at a long series and play them in alphabetical order, they'd look up the order or play just the newest one, and it would be good to see how these series change mechanically over time. It makes your progress pseudo-alphabetical, which might happen anyway if you plan to go back and play new releases as they come out to fill in gaps in your list.
Can't wait for among us in like 5 years or smth
