If you’re still struggling with determining the difference between systematic and interest, this is the best way I can differentiate them:
I (an INFP) was helping my mom (an ISFJ) put away groceries. My mom looks at me and says, “You’re doing it all wrong! You’re supposed to put all the stuff that goes in the fridge first so you don’t have to keep opening and closing it.” I was just grabbing stuff out of bags and putting them where they need to go, not even thinking about a “system” to put groceries away.
I definitely pragmatic.

Somehow I'm always still amazed at how ACCURATE you are at this. Yes, ISTJs are not pragmatic, although they frequently LOOK as if they are. Yes, NTs are often espousing The Scientific Method. Bc it's true. Bc it works.
A year ago, my ENTP boss, my ESFP manager and my INTP self were interviewing job candidates. ESFP and myself were at odds bc he couldn't give me any REASONS why he was opposed to my fave candidate (ISTP). It was very clear ISTP was smart, efficient and would organically fit into our team. ESFP: "My fave candidate was wearing a tie and your fave was wearing a flannel."
INTP: "Oh, was he? Huh. Well, regardless, he's still the best person for the job bc (insert reasons).
ENTP (diplomatically): "We're going with INTP's choice".
A year later, INTP to ESFP: "I told you so. I was right, as usual."
ESFP: "What are you talking about? ISTP was MY first choice." lol
or is it due to your manager being an Se user so he just forgot.
How can anyone think he's an ENTJ? 11 minutes in and he still has yet to get to the point. Going off on tangents while trying to tackle every interrelated problem simultaneously; can't get more Ne hero than that.

does anyone else think that ENTJs are the most shallow of all NTs? because they seem so preoccupied with worldly concerns (predominantly money and status) to the point of not caring about much of anything else.... [anyway that's been my experience with ENTJs]
As an INTP I’ve never really noticed that I never ask people what’s in it for me compared to them until now. I simply follow the process and trust it will work out. But NTPs are triple systematic so we’re pretty much never interest-based and if we are you better run away as fast as possible because we’re about to be destructive 😂
It’s one of the easiest ways to differentiate NTPs from NFJs because NFJs are triple interest.
I go into each of these videos wondering if I'll hear something that makes me think, "Maybe I'm not an INTJ." Hasn't happened yet. Sometimes I had to really think about it, like in the concrete vs. abstract video. This was easy. I'm primarily systematic, for sure, but not in that SJ way of following the rules, sticking to routines, and being systematic just because that's the way it's done, has always been done, and therefore should always be done. I do it strategically. Everything should be open to revision if you can find a better way to do it. Systems become outdated by future innovation. So I'm clearly an NT, always future oriented, always looking to innovate, improve, optimize, etc. Everything can be replaced with something better.

I'm the same to improve and upgrade things, but I'm typed as an SJ. NO clue how I'm SJ, I don't get it.

Great series for truly understanding the temperaments and interaction styles at depth. I appreciate the extensive knowledge you share here. Thank you.
So, in resumé, systematic people use a consistent and often impersonalized methodology to similar problems/situations (grouped by categories). In that regard, guardians using the systematic approach as means to enforce and ensure the social cohesion of the group (concrete, affiliative) whereas, for intellectual, it would be more for the sake of efficiency (pragmatic). The intellectual being more flexible in their systematic approach due to their abstract intuitive perception.
On the other, interest-based people prefer a case-by-case and somehow more subjective approach to problem-solving. In the case of idealists, the interest-approach would be mean to confirm the intention and it's conformity to their own subjective interpretation of the implicit social contract (abstract, affiliative). Finally, for artisans, the interest-approach would be about their personal approach to efficiently implement their down-to-earth craft (concrete, pragmatic).
Sometimes you describe my type in ways that make me doubt that I've arrived at the right one. But then the type grid narrows me back down to INTJ.
And sometimes I get distracted and don't hear everything you say.

- NTPs are triple systematic, hence why we are accused of setting up frameworks and overthinking everything. Combining double pragmatic and abstraction into this explains why we set up so much frameworks with details nobody cares about even though we ourselves don’t care about the existing frameworks and details unless it works for us (How NT systems differ from SJ systems)
- NTJs are triple pragmatic, hence why they get accused of coming off so cold and uncaring, among other things they get accused of. Being double systematic and abstract, that’s why they don’t seem to care as much about the purpose for themselves as they do for how it would actually function (How NT pragmatism differs from SP pragmatism)
I have a hard time getting my NTJ to understand that all my details serve the purpose of coming up with a better solution. He deals with one detail at a time (which is, granted, more efficient) until his objective is achieved (and I am left wondering if the result is correct). I also drive doctors mad with this. ^_^
How do you think triple pragmatic meshes with triple control, in the case of ENTJ? (INTP trying to better embrace my shadow type)
@@sledgehog1 I'm an ENTJ and I can assure you it's like you're always considered as an insensitive/uncaring bastard and you tell them "I don't give a damn as long as I'm an efficient bastard" because you're pragmatic AF, which also makes you awkward in emotional situations (I think as an INTP you share the same experience); in addition to my Fe demon I am basically not capable of giving emotional support effectively to whatever that person may be. lastly, although being triple control, we are actually not being bossy all the time, which is what we're constantly accused of, because both our ISFP subconscious and INTP shadow are informative. f ex, I become super informative in the way I talk when I try to explain a theory or concept to someone, or presenting my (artistic) work to others, when I'm using my shadows and subconscious respectively. in fact I'm being more informative during the whole process of explaining the effect of triple control and giving examples

Hey Joseph, you should come up with worksheets with typing problems to solve with answers on the back. Problems where we try to guess what is what to sharpen our understanding and discernment skills.

In medical school we have OSCE exams that are practical and oral exames, and all the SJ and NT come really sharp and well dressed (just like a job interview) but me as an INFJ usually go just looking "presentable" since I usually didn't sleep the night before and been studying for 16+ hrs.
However, we did have a doctor whom we knew he was far more interested in your look and the way dress than your knowledge so everytime he was examining us I dressed a bit more sharp because I knew what he was interested in
I just realized that a vast part of the disagreements I sometimes have with things you say, or how you say them, derives from me being triple interest based, while you are triple systematic.
(Which now allows me to put things into perspective much better!)

@@mehdihassankhanloo5297 I no longer agree with CSJ's framework. I don't think the type grid holds up, allthough some parts of it can be measured consistently. They're not related to type the way CSJ thinks they are. That's what I think. Thank you for asking. Confirmation bias can lead one to see things the way I have two years ago.

I didn't say it doesn't work. It works for what it says it does. But that isn't worth anything in my opinion.
I've moved on to the Objective Personality System. All other systems I've seen are inferior in my opinion, because there is no attempt at getting trackable consistency whatsoever. I'm not saying the OPS has the perfect method for that either, but it's at least trying to go there.
It's been only 2-3 days since I found your channel and I'm hooked! Interestingly, I got to know from MBTI tests that I'm an INTJ and I do feel it to be accurate but after listening you say that it's not very exact I'm eager to find type using the type grid as well!

My ESTP mom always wants me to get to the point. Me being informative can't do that but we are both interest based.
I just want you to help me understand how Madonna is an INTJ and not ESTP. She was a cheerleader in highschool. In her youth she didn't care about what other people thought about her like when she did her Justify My Love video and the photographs where she is entirely naked smoking a cigarette in a book that was published.
ESFPS don't really like being naked in photographs for strangers. ESFPs (even an ESFP subconscious) care about what their parents would think. ESFPs care about what others think. Their Te child would know that their parents would be disgusted. Only ESTPs who are popular could convince ESFPs that it's cool to be naked in pics. ESFPs would only do it if others whom they admire or want be like are doing it. I am certain Marilyn Monroe had to be coaxed into getting naked or have a few drinks. Alcohol would be the only other way an ESFP or ISFP would get naked for a stranger for a photoshoot. I digress!
In the movie Desperately Seeking Susan, you see who Madonna really is -- very ESTP.
She was asked what she wanted to do when she first moved to NY after college or when she was in highschool and she said that she wanted to be a dancer but she didn't want to continue living hand to mouth in NY so she reluctantly took someone else's advice to sing. She said that the only reason she didn't regret that advice was because she is able to incorporate her talent in modern dance with singing.
Dick Clark asked her what she wanted to do when she was on American Bandstand back in the early 1980's when she was in her early 20's and she told him she wants to rule the world. That's what a direct extravert who is either ENTJ or ESTP would say. No introvert would share that information.
Just like Angelina Jolie, Madonna went into a third world country and adopted a child and discussed the atrocities in the third world country. They both use their INFJ subconscious to talk about what should be done to make the world a better place. They both show that they are extraverts in interviews like on The Tonight Show. Madonna was very direct with Jimmy Fallon and she wasn't afraid to do crazy things like sit on his desk and show off her grills. She told him that she could host his show for him when he is on vacation. She even told him that she didn't care what other people thought about her.

This interaction thing is starting to make sense. This really makes many of the diffenrences between me (infj) an my intj make sense.
INFP - when I practiced law, a judge (chief judge) once told me that I was too emotionally involved in my cases. The same judge, who had heard me sing for a fellow lawyer’s memorial service, announced to the court that I could have had a second career as a singer. He was always in my corner. Think he is an ISTJ.

It's kinda sad and at the same time funny for me, as a triple interest person (INFJ) people perceive me as a bit weird and scattered and at times dumb and incompetent by systematic people. (even though I have my own meticulous order and routine and everything) before I was perplexed because I couldn't understand why I was perceived that way but now it's getting clearer. Goodness, I'm an INFJ and you have just made me finally understand why the heck I am so depressed with failing to know what my privaty INTJ friend wants. Kinda feeling as if my hands are tied, because I don't know what I can *do* for them. This lack of information in my mind, this blankness, drives me crazy. Because I feel useless.

I've got one for you: interest based people say "in the interest of..." a lot! Like hello, the word interest is right in there. Man I feel dumb how long it took me to get these concepts, but you know I have Ne demon so what do you expect. It's all so obvious though once you understand this fabulous typing system 🙌
I am a systematic thinker. However, I lean toward 'interest' as my style of interaction. Most people can't take my systematic way of thinking. The problem is that some people cannot or will not be explicit. It didn't even dawn on me until taking a "Work Smart" class that "reading between the lines" was a part of advanced listening skills --thereby almost putting my communication skills in the "could use improvement" category. As of recent, I just had a 'one-hour' 3-panel Skype-call 'federal' interview that (at times) felt like a firing squad-though I tried to maintain a personable atmosphere. After a 20 minute presentation followed by 35 minutes of questions, I had asked a reasonable question of what milestones they would like to accomplish within the first year. I couldn't get a straight answer, wth.

Actually, I have been a federal employee for a number of years and did two internships prior to that. Knowing what I know, I should probably run for the hills. However, it is not that easy. The energy field has been in flux for the past five years and is in some cases, even worse than the IT industry. Right now, I am trying to find the best option(s) for transitioning into renewable energy (and then hopefully industry) given my background. I am looking into other options, however.

I've been on this channel for a year and damn when I go back to bingewatch some of your videos to master the type grid. It's way too obvious for me that I am Interest based. I am an ISTP and as an interest based person, I'm asking questions like "What do you get out of this?". "Why would I do that, what is there for me?" and that usually comes along with me questions some systems and traditions as well. That infuriates my mom and she labeled me as "illogical" , "stupid" and all kind of names because I ask more questions that is needed too I guess. She is systematic btw. She ordered us me and my ISFJ big bro on 'Doing things just for the sake of doing them'. he mindlessly executes. While I'm by default questioning everything.
I don't know if this is relevant but when she leaves out some details about things that she wants me to do and she expects me to do something about them. Read between the lines if my guess is right.
Ne Trickster is unaware about all of that. And when I bring only what she ordered. She is infuriated. Example: context. Her lunch was getting cold so she ordered me to get some chicken broth to heat it at the right temperature because she didn't like eating when the food is lukewarm. But what she didn't specify is that she wanted some of the meal along with that. I already asked x, y and z question to make sure I don't have to deal with unnecessarily trouble. I only brought the chicken broth because it's the only thing she asked me to directly. But since I already asked her purpose and everything. I'm like 'I already asked you what do you want to get but you still pass the buck on me despite everything I've asked you?'. if it was my big bro, he would've just get moving without questioning anything. But in my case, in the moment, I was thinking she was just stupid

This makes sense, and explains why my NF family members could never understand how I can make new rules for myself (and stick to them), like when breaking habits. It's like I just make it part of the "system." Do you think with NT's it's more about making rules/systems for yourself, vs. general societal rules (SJs)? I'm almost starting to wonder if my INFP fiance is even capable of breaking bad habits, or getting more organized.

I always wondered how systematics could be so systematic with their speech; my sentence structure is all over the place... As an interest-focused person, let me tell you... I got snickered at for forgetting my business cards....(who needs a business card; everybody knows me, what are they going to do with it; find it in the book) I told an SJ once we didn't issue confirmation numbers, because people have a name, not a number. Rules be damned. Always wondered where that behavior came from....

Serious (hypothetical?) question: If I am attempting to type someone, but unexpectedly identify the following unused combinations repeatedly (several attempts), what should I do then?
1) Direct Initiating Movement
2) Informing Initiating Control
3) Direct Responding Control
4) Informing Responding Movement
5) Concrete Affiliative Interest
6) Concrete Pragmatic Systematic
7) Abstract Pragmatic Interest
8) Abstract Affiliative Systematic
My guesses are they may be utilizing different sides of their minds, or different questions prompt different responses due to nurture, or could it be what Dr. Dario Nardi is referring to as the half of left-handers that are wired differently (Dario Nardi @ Google Talks)? Whatever the case, what should I do then? Default to identifying cognitive functions, stop at two, best guess? Or is this a moot question, and no type actually combines these styles?
What is your take on this issue?

I cannot tell if I am INTP or ISFP, those are the last two that I have narrowed it down to but I am not sure if I am abstract or if I am systematic, i lean more towards systematic because I am a rule follower although I am one of the only people in my grade to question the rules and the way that things were built. I always thought I was abstract but maybe I am wrong.
Any other INTJ getting annoyed waiting for him to get the point? Started doing something else until I heard something useful.
Edit: I'm pretty 50/50 between the two. I think it's from studying philosophy. The 'point' is really what matters in philosophy so I find myself adopting this 'the point' mentality. Education background can play an important role. When I went from philosophy to therapy, my preference for systems was finally utilized. I'm a licensed philosophical counsellor, but I focus more of designing therapy programs vs actually administering it. I got my master's to design my own therapy programs for mainly children. It's nice to be able to flip between the two.
Watching this helped me reason that I am in fact not an "informative" type. He says too much useless stuff and I wouldn't mind if he clearly gave the useful stuff in the beginning in a ordered manner or if he kept to the point and used examples to explain everything

Didn't realize that before. I assumed systematic but now I believe interest-based since that fits how I interact with others all the time. That's always first reaction. However, I thot it was just ME BEING IMPATIENT. n figured that was just something I could work on or fix. Many times I'm cutting people off trying 2 finish their sentences in order 2 rush them to the frigging point, purpose , or question! And sometimes I get it wrong! Lol but don't care Cuz I usually just ok but what do u want. What do u need me 2 do. What can I do 2 help. What can I fix! Not 2 be rude I just can't take it. The long drawn out merry go round waste of time chatting. Tell me what u need and I can get it done AMD MOVE ON WITH MY LIFE.WORK.OR WHATEVER. But also when approached with requests. ITS FRIGGIN STRESSFUL N ANNOYING I need long requests in emails. Period. I always eventually cut em off n say. Hey snd me and email so I can have all details when I take a look at it today. I need 2 see everything theyre talking abt. Sometimes I stop n look right there. So maybe secondary.

So what appreciates social norms more? A systematic person or an affiliative person? I’m thinking I’m definitely pragmatic because I’m meritocratic, and I am also interest based because I hardly ever notice social norms.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I think I’m an ENFP but an ENFP’s ego, unconscious, and subconscious are all affiliative but I’m very pragmatic so how does this fit together?

Joseph 4:30 if an ISTJ can go pragmatic through their shadow (since their subconscious is also affiliative), then types like INTJ and ENTJ, who has both of their shadow AND subconscious being pragmatic, must use their superegos(which is generally a negative function) to transition to affiliative? does this mean only when these types are at an unhealthy state could they access the affiliative mindset?
Hey cool video!! I just realized that I've been mistaking "Systematic" for "Abstract". Maybe because English is my 2nd language, I don't know. In general I perceive systematic talk a bit like another abstract layer in the language - as an example I was sure Ed Snowden was INFJ until seeing you typing him as ISTJ.
Can it be that concrete people can sound abstract if they are too deep into their systematic thinking ?? I'm specifically thinking about an art teacher I'm trying to type - I thought he was abstract but I'm now thinking he's also ISTJ. I think he said at one point talking about a software program - "it's a system of systems" lol.
Is :"what are you trying to do or achieve?" an interest based question?

The way you explained being Interest based sounds like being pragmatic. What again is the difference between pragmaticsm and interest?
Pragmatics do what works in their actions. Interest types are motivated by internal reasons and are better at "winging it" as opposed to using a methodology or framework. Pragmatics can either wing it from internal motivations do to what works or they can use a frame or methodology to do what works. Interest types can be pragmatics or afiliatives. An interest based afiliative does what's right by winging it for internal motivations.
Afiliatives always think decisions are either right for everybody (win-win) or just one party (win-lose) or they are the wrong decisions for everybody (lose-lose).
Pragmatics categorize decisions as what works for everybody or just one party and what doesn't work for everybody.
Systematics are system motivated and follow a system. Interest based are internally motivated and good at winging it.
I can't remember which video it was but there was a comment asking how INTJs can be systematic (order) yet direct (chaos). I'm not 100% sure but I think we think systematically as in mapping things out but don't see it's efficiency practically. It's kinda like P is the goal, here's X Y Z ways to get to P, great we've mapped out all these plans but don't end up using any of them because theoretical thinking doesn't anyways translate to practical reality. Overplanning and never actually using any of the plans because freedom is more important and end up doing whatever works. You can plan as much as you want but it doesn't mean it translates to reality. I plan a shit ton and never use most of the plans I make because reality doesn't work that way lol.

I think I’m an infj. I have really bad anxiety and with the example of the Nf not dressing up..I usually overcompensate and act way more self assured and confident and am well dressed in interviews but I have to try very hard to put off that image.

About the job interview. I showed up in my interview (years ago) wearing T-shirt and jeans because i thought what i wore had none to do with my skills (and was turned down hehe). However, I do want to know the mèthods, what is the framework. I don't necessarily need to be guided to do anything, but i do want things to be as clear as possible before i do any tasks, what's the aim/goal/target, how to best reach that goal, etc.
Sounds like Se Trickster to me (aka INTP).

One of the reasons I quit my job was my interest focused manager constantly telling me to spare him the details and get to the point. I found that rude, offensive and a show of the lack of appreciation for the effort I was putting in.
Chase, I just want to say that it bothers me a tiny bit that you heart some comment but don't actually respond, especially if they are questions. I assume you do this to let the commenter know you read their comment, but you don't have enough time to respond to every comment.

Any exceptions for intp? i find that the bottom line facilitates communication much better than method. I usually form the method once I know where I stand.

I love to be informed. Loquacious people give me headaches. But your disclaimers have an attractive element into them ( birthing clarity from the womb of confusion) . That is good to understand. It is understanding of what this system is not . So we can understand what it is by comparison. This is the door way of deeper understanding. I think most people who think you are not an ENTP, assume this system is yours . You structured it as an ENTJ. But no . You analyse and teach this structured system in an ENTP way that they don't get , because of their assumptions about your functions and functional stack.as an INFJ, MY 6th function Fi is healthy now , as I worked upon it . I try to analyse systems of others to choose what is healthy and practical for my Ti from the Te of others . Through logic and pragmatism.
I have my past as titles and lessons for my significant experience. But working on Fi , Te and Si is difficult than the others 5 functions. It is a life journey of struggle, adventures and growth. When I use some Fi or Te, they think they are higher in function stack . They are high, but the conscious 4 are higher , easier and more developed. So I use them more frequently. Some people confuse my Ni + Fe for an Fi . So I get why those folks are confused, thinking this is your system & you have mistyped yourself . And jump into the conclusion, that it is invalid. Because in their minds you can't even type yourself correctly!
Keep it up . I can relate . I think most of them need to listen, while they seek understanding not judging you for sake of it.

My first rule is : break all the rules to test them and only use what works in a cooperative way as much as possible. Being courteous is good , when it serves higher prpouse.
If it is impossible let's have some pragmatic medium chaos here to allow the flow. This stagnation is taking us nowhere fast, which is not healthy. Let's go somewhere and course correct on the run.
I really love this system. Because I use my secondary, as needed . But my primary tendencies are clear to me.

Does it make sense for an INTP to first build a system in a social situation where he/she is trying to find out what another person should to first build a system with all of the options and then eliminate options based on what the other person is interested in achieving ?

I'm interest by default for sure, not systematic, but I'm Ti/Fe (so INFP not possible) and not ISTP.
Or, do you admit the jump thing with first and third function? Because I am probably Si/Ne (So it would make me a Si ISTP).

Since I never observed a lot of Ne in myself, I always assumed that I was Si more than Ne. So when I discover that people can jump function, I immediately thought that it was my case.
But the teritary child made me understand how this function can be so present compared to the secondary parent. If I'm referring to this, so I must be a Ne second.
Now I have to figure out in what way I could be more systematic than interest, since I'm pretty balanced with the two apparently.

I mean quite a bit of both as in I like to have loose structures, verify stuff and etc. , but also I base the things I'll do on what I want to do atm(as in my hobbies at the given time).
What is the primary difference between pragmaticism and interest? This is the one thing I want to know before I fully understand this season.
