- Watch the complete final round broadcast of the 1971 Masters. Charles Coody wins by two strokes over Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller. (Though the original broadcast was in color, archival footage is in black and white.)
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Coody about two weeks ago at his course in Abilene, TX. I didn't know I was speaking to him until the shop attendant made the remark. I asked him who he beat in '71 and he said "a couple of blond guys." Very pleasant fellow.
How cool is that scale model of the course!
Happy 83rd birthday, Charles Coody. Hope you're staying safe and healthy.
Nice comments by Ray Scott about Arnie as he walked up 18. Although that may have been the last time he was referred to as a young man. LOL.
Weiskopf must hold the masters record, for second place finishes; amazing
Tom had 4 seconds. So did Jack.
Hogan was the other with 4 seconds.
Miller 2nd 3 times
I was just thinking the same thing. I''ve been watching these final-round broadcasts of the Masters from the late '60s and throughout the '70s and Tom seems to ALWAYS be in contention, often with a realistic chasnce to win. Amazing record... I don't know what the numbers show, but he has to be among those players with the most top-ten finishes in this tournament. Sasly, I don't believe he ever won it. I loved to watch him play... such a graceful, fluid swing he had.
You can tell this is an old broadcast when the people in the gallery are referred to as "spectators" and not "patrons."
"John Miller". When did they start calling him "Johnny Miller"?
Surprised this video is in black and white, but still fun to watch!
If Miller just played the final 4 holes like Arnold Palmer did, he would have won. He really let this one get away from him.
Met Charles Coody in 1997 at Meadowbrook club long island 🏝️ northville classic Sr tour event - walked up to him in the middle of the fairway and said to him " I know a man 🙂♂️👞 who won the" masters " when I see him ! " He smiled and couldn'tve been nicer ! I noticed he had an old ping anser 85020 , but it wasn't a " Scottsdale " and I told him I was a " collector " and we had a nice exchange 💱 about it ! signed my program ,too !
Funny how they referred to Miller in commentary as "John", yet in the early days too Watson was referred to as "Tommy". I dont think Watson would have relished being called "Tommy". Imagine if Nicklaus had been referred to as "Jackie" lol
Miller's pants are fantastic.
If you're wondering why the 1970s was referred to as "the decade that taste forgot..."
@@orbyfan Sure, people overdid the bright colors a bit, but I'll take that over today's black, black and more black. So boring!
@@TRRyan Agreed.

I wonder what the earliest telecast that exists is. Is there any footage from the first televised masters in 1956?
I've seen footage of Hogan's wins, from 1951 & '53
Charles had a great clearing of the hips before the club head came through. Rooting for your grandsons.
If you want to see the chairman. It’s here

Amazing how , in that era, that Trevino never won there,; back in '71 , he won everything else
Lee played a low fade; he always said that Augusta is for the right to left high shot players and he simply didn't the game there.
Trevino also skipped the Masters several times during his prime.
Boy Miller at 23 leading up until the very end you would think he would win a couple of Masters….if he was a better putter he would have
Did Johnny Miller win any other majors besides the one US Open victory?? just curious judging from the footage I've seen of him he was a great player.
One of the best! The yips did him! 1st Win 1971 last Win 1994! He came out of the booth to beat the Players who were not happy with some of his comments over the years! Have to laught
He won British open 1976
76 British open
I just watched the 1970s masters and it was in Color. Why is 1971 in black and white. Maybe bits and pieces were in color on the 70s masters maybe this one will have some color too
25:43 too bad this is a B&W kinescope. Would have loved to see John Derr's sport jacket in full technicolor. It may have been the late, great Craig Sager's inspiration.
Why's this black and white and the 70 one was color?
Thumbnail made it look like Tom Cruise won the Masters.
The guy looks luke Tom Cruise.....uncanny!....
Why is not in color
Brilliant stuff loved this
I swear the courses look fake in black and white
We watch a 1971 telecast of the Masters in awful quality black and white, yet The Wizard of Oz filmed in 1938, in colour, was a beautiful screening rivalling any digital production of today.....It's always about the politics and money.
@C. Buck Hyres Very interesting analysis.....I had no idea....Thank you for your response.
looks like 1871 lol
