Richie was my Latin instructor when I went to M.I. From 90-92 As a kid coming from texas and never playing salsa it was a revelation. He was kind, direct and of course a master.
Useful advice to all drummers and percussionists: Learn to play Latin and Afro-Cuban music! Even if you don't think you'll ever perform in those styles, it will improve your independence and rhythmic vocabulary tremendously! There are so many cool ideas from other music cultures that you can borrow to enhance your own music.
I saw señor richie el gajaté doing a masterclass back in 98 in Leeds in UK 🇬🇧. It was freezing cold and he was saying he was used to LA heat! Anyway a train went over head as it was at the granary wharf and there are trains. Richie thought it was an earthquake and looked really worried for a second. It was comedy. He said there had been a big one recently 😳. What a great player
