    RIP - Rest In Power: the great Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez has left this plane, 1945-2024, but thankfully left us with a LOT of great music and masterful bongo magic.

    For those watching this amazing tutorial, You can slow down the playback speed to 2 times slower. You find those settings on the gear symbol right next to the close caption CC icon. That way you can see his hands movements in slow motion. It helped me a lot.

    That's crazy! My father played with him when they both played with Tito Puente... My dad's name is Victor Cruz who also played with Ceila Cruz right up to when she passed away. He also was part of the All Stars.

    Esta es una forma bien personal de Dandy Rodríguez y ver como ese martillo baja como si fuera a construir una casa de madera... DURISIMO. Johnny Dandy Rguez tiene un manejo único y lo que llama la atención es como los patrones se salen de lo normal en la salsa o el jazz pero a mi parece que su percusión en el bongó está mas cerca del guaguancó...me corriges. De todos modos es fabuloso ver como alguien se ha tomado el momento para desmenuzarlo y para uno que otro seguidor del ritmo y del bongó nos deleitemos y al mismo tiempo aprendamos. Buen trabajo Eric. Gracias

      Exacto, yo he estado estudiando la música cubana y también lo escucho aproximado al patrón del guaganco. Y es que es muy natural que los cubanos como Tito Puente que comenzarón a tocar el jazz a su manera por lo que se creó el latin jazz junto con otros músicos y llamaron la atención en EU por lo que los músicos que tocaban con él como es el caso de Jonnhy comenzarán a reinventar los ritmos en sus patrones, otro ejemplo es como el caso de Ray Barretto. Es como la base del aprendizaje si a mi me enseñan el son montuno por ejemplo yo puedo pensar de que otra forma puedo tocarlo. Y no digo que sean malos músicos, por el contrario son muy buenos, porque por su forma de tocar han destacado, sólo no olvidar que el origen de todo esto es Cuba. Don't forget the origin of all these rhytms is Cuba!!

    Hi Eric, thanks for your videos again. I have a question. I see people, included myself beating the drums with just one or two fingers and others with the whole hand. It works for me better playing with just one or two finger, otherwise it sounds muffed to me. What do you think personally? or anybody else any ideas?

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  6 років тому +1

      It all goes down to technique... I've seen the same and a lot of people are able to get such a projection from a couple or fingers... but what I've learned is that as long as you're main principle are fingers (to an extent) and you're avoiding injury and you're getting proper projection then you're on the right path... If you notice Anthony Carillo's positioning vs Dandy's... completely different.. but both highly respectable.

    Very interesting alternative take on the martillo, I really didn’t know there were variations on it. Luckily I got to see Dandy in the 80s at SOBs here in NYC when I was in my early 20s, with Charlie Palmieri. I was floored, I simply couldn’t believe the pop and tones he pulled out of the bongo. Arguably the greatest ever on the instrument, maybe?
