Oh how true. I still remember being just a young teenager in the late 60s and hearing Buddy for the first time on 2 albums: Swingin New Big Band and Blues Caravan. Talk about "never forgotten!" It was life changing for me. Completely changed my direction as a young aspiring drummer. And here I am, so many decades later, and 34 years after Buddy died, still marveling and appreciating.
And I was there too, and you’re absolutely right about the rest of the band which he carried with him, some members for years and years and that’s why they were so great.
My Mom used to scold me because whenever I knew Buddy Rich was gonna appear on Johnny Carson, I’d sneak into the living room, to watch!! One of the absolute legends!! 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
I'd love to shake your hand for providing such wonderful buddy rich material. Your making all of his fans very happy. Thank you so much again from all his fans worldwide.
+graham sheridan You are very kind and gracious to say this and I appreciate it. And as I have said before, it gives ME great pleasure to see how much interest there is in Buddy even after all these years. Glad I can be a part of making these vintage videos available for all to marvel at, and for young drummers to study and learn from.
Great arrangements. And for anyone who thinks Rich was all about flash and speed on his solos, I suggest going five minutes in to a short one with the bass player. No razzle dazzle, just solid ideas.
I was very fortunate to have seen this very band With him during this time In Fort Collins, Colorado. In my opinion, This was the best band he ever had, or played with, and the arrangements were unbelievable. Not only that, but this old set of Radio Kings that was restored, was the best I ever heard his drums sound. That 24” bass drum was like a bomb, And yet so musical! Both he and this band were 100% at the top of their game!

I was very fortunate to have seen Buddy and his amazing band quite a few times..in clubs and at concert venues...he was absolutely mind boggling in the total command he had over his drums ! You knew you were watching genius when he played ! No one could drive a band like Buddy !
Outstanding! Rejuvenating my love of the Buddy Rich Big band and of course Buddy Rich. My dad brought home a pair of drum sticks and Swing'in New Big Band, that was what? 1967 or so? Buddy was the ONLY thing I tried to play on drums till about 1975. Refuse to waste my time now with Gregg Potter doing drums. NO FEEL. Thanks for all these video's!
+Mr DDD3az Very glad you are enjoying the videos! Swingin New Big Band was 1966 by the way. Can you believe it? And here we are 50 years later still marveling at the incredible musicianship of the "Drum Wonder."
cloudview747 Ya 1966, but i got it in 1967, up until then all I heard was Glen Miller etc, my dad loved the Big bands, and because it is all I heard when growing up, I related to what Buddy s band was doing as Big band, but a Big band that cooked!
True sign of genius Cloud no matter how many times I watch these I ALWAYS see or hear new details every single time - such a challenge and joy to listen and watch all of these Thanks again a billion times over !!
When I used to see Buddy live, it was so grand that I thought it would last forever. I never took photos or anything. I shook his hand once in a small club in the San Diego area. '82, I believe. Ludwig then. A very kind man off stage and a beast on stage. God bless these videos, and God bless the Cloud Miester!
Thank you very much Brian. I know what you mean about thinking it would last forever. Looking back, I definitely wish I had taken photos and brought my portable tape recorder with me to those concerts!

Today's date is 2 April 2019. I remember what happened on this day in 1987. The entire world lost the greatest drummer who ever lived. Nobody can match Buddy's talent, NOBODY!! David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock island, IL.) 2 April 2019.
Here's an Aaron Copland quote about Mozart, that I apply to Buddy Rich: "He tapped the source from which all music flows, expressing himself with a spontaneity and refinement and breath-taking rightness that has never since been duplicated."
I have been a BR fan for an eternity. It is great to see these clips, it's the only way I can enjoy & get my BR "fix". There are drummers today who don't even know who he is. I love the little one fingered wave after the end of the first song at about 2:50. You can always tell when Buddy was in an especially good mood, and I definitely get that vibe from this concert.
Thanks for the share. I didn't have this particular concert in hand. Now that I have it, much appreciated. It's hard to believe that Buddy would pass away two years after this show.
Bass trombonist is Jim Martin who played on the extra board with the St. Louis Symphony and wa with Buddy for about 3 years. Fine player and nice guy. Still playing and teaching.
Today 105 years ago GOD was reborn , he came to Earth as a child prodigy then went on through his time here to become the greatest Drummer who will ever live Not only that he was the greatest technician in music and probably the greatest of all time . Those of us lucky enough to see this phenomenon will never forget it . My own feelings are the day he passed I lost my mentor , my inspiration and friend Happy Birthday Superman
I got to see him at Disneyland Carnation Plaza Garden around 1975. I was 15 and got his autograph before the show. When that 12 piece brass section fired up it blew my mind how loud and cool it was. I was hooked. Of course buddy was mind boggling. I knew he was a great drummer but as I have watched and listened became every more of a fan. He was incredible to watch and I am still impressed every time I hear him blaze. So fast!
No doubt, the band is smokin' on that tune! I sure do miss him Brian. I've been thinking about him more than ever, as his birthday is coming the end of this month.
I love it too. There are actually many videos and audios of BR playing Wind Machine. Check them out. Especially watch the Disneyland 1984 video concert and marvel at the brief drum break he does near the end of the song.
My God 68 years old and doing that. The technical skill you have to have to be able to pull those things off that he was doing is just incredible. And about this racist thing. Buddy has played with just about every Jazz Superstar of that era most of them being black and if he was a racist they wouldn't have even let him get near them regardless of how he played. He idolized Papa Joe Jones and I've seen several pictures of Buddy giving him a big hug. After reading Papa Joe Jones's biography, if Papa Joe would have even thought Buddy was a racist he wouldn't have let Buddy within a mile of him. Al Gray the master trombonist was a very good friend of buddies and was a guest soloist with Buddies band several times. And I could go on and on. The thing is, if he was a racist it was something that he could have not hidden from the jazz music world and nobody, nobody would have played with him.
In every Buddy Rich video I've watched, there is some guy out in the audience that yells out "YAH BUDDY!!!" . I always wondered if it was the same guy who followed the band to every show throughout the 70s and 80s. Nevertheless, Buddy Rich will always be my greatest drumming hero! RIP BUDDY!!!
cloudview747! ... again, I have this entire performance too, and have had it for years. I got it from a guy that lives in Chicago and taped it off the TV when it aired. Thing is .. again .. yours has just that much MORE quality visually. HOW do you do it??!! LOVE the fact that you share all these GEMS! As mentioned... I am a subscriber! BEST!!!
me and a pal fixed up a really nasty Buddy in Toronto around this time. The herb was truly primo for that era , as im sure half the band would also atest too, Bamboo Club in T.O......Lets just say Buddy played like a whole different dude after intermission. lmao. Then to top the night off i had the pleasure of introducing some of the cats in the band to the amazing horn man Guido Basso, who for them, was like me being introduced to Buddy...One of the highlites of my existence so far.....I thought it was pretty cool that Buddy was still hauling away at 67 or so.....peace
Buddy Rich (Nueva York, 30 de septiembre de 1917 - Los Ángeles, 2 de abril de 1987) fue un baterista estadounidense de jazz, representante del swing, bop y, en general, del jazz de las big bands.
thanks for the share! Those drums he's playing are not slingerlands, the shells where made by Joe McSweeny/EAMES and given to Buddy. I studied with John Georges a friend of Joe. I bought a snare drum off John. the shells are the thickest shells I have ever seen. the hardware is a mix of slingerlands.Ludwigs and on my snare those and DW snares
Ed Man actually no I can't! All I know is Joe McSweeny OF EAMES DRUMS who is one guy who makes drum shells gave Buddy that kit which he played till he passed away. the rims are old sling's I Believe. It's beyond a refurbished slingerland! My old teacher had and has a whole kit of EAMES. he makes the shells and the customer buy's the hardware, any hardware from any company and he puts them 2gether. his shop is in Saugus Mass. there incredible drums! he does all the work buy ✋ buy himself. that's all I know! the kit in Smithsonian is this kit! Joe puts the EAMES label inside the shells. it is the same look of the old slings. my drum has old sling rims(I have a snare that I bought off my teacher in 99)
I know very little about drum companies and hardware. I know how 2 play! lol... Never be even close 2 Buddy! I love all kinds of Jazz and I thank my teacher John Georges who is a phenomenal player and teacher. he got me into Jazz. he studied with Joe Morello and Allen Dawson! great drummer's! my old teacher had a lot of great stories that Allen and Joe shared with him. Allen Dawson opened for Buddy Rich and played this cool drum solo with a wild 4 way coordination. Buddy said 2 him "that was some hip shit". During Buddy's set he played a solo doing the same thing just taken 2 another level, Allen Dawson was like "I been working on that my whole life and Buddy played it like it was his idea and in fact made it his! the beauty of Jazz improvisation
Sean. I have been teaching for over 40 years now and you were and still are one of the most talented. Now for the real story about Buddy's last set. Joe Mac Sweeney renovated old, painted, Radio King Drums he purchased from vendors in Chicago and other areas. I watched as he removed paint, glue and old pearl. These were ALL Radio King Shells. Joe Stamped "Buddy Rich Radio King" inside the shells. He then re-pearled all with Slingerland White Marine. When they were finished, I played them, before he gave them to Buddy in 1983. Buddy played them until 1987 and they now reside in the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Buddy loved the drums and Joe, they were friends. Many years ago Modern Drummer interviewed Joe and he gave all the inside info. I feel privileged to know Joe, he has been one of my best friends. As far as I am concerned, he made the best drums ever. John Georges... www.rockinbeatdrumschool.com
John Georges Hey it's beyond fantastic 2 hear from you 😎 Thanks for the way to kind words,it means a lot coming from you! It's impossible for me to go through a day without thinking of you. I love Drums now even more than I did when I started. I owe everything 2 you! All the music I listen to the way I play especially JAZZ,all started in August 1987 with my first lesson. Thanks for talking my mom into buying me my first kit! I have a 7 piece Gretch, my first brand new kit! bought it 2 years ago! I still have the snare you sold me! Not one for Religious stuff but in the spirit of being polite... HAPPY EASTER!!!!! Talk soon
An excellent band, two years before he passed away. it's sad to see Barry Keiner on piano, a great talent, who died a year after this performance, from a heroin overdose. Not sure why Bill Cunliffe was not there. Buddy once cancelled a performance in Africa when his bassist was denied a visa. this may have been that bassist, or perhaps Ben Brown from an earlier band. lastly, the cameramen never knew how to film Buddy. the best position, to feel the intensity, was in front of the drum kit, raised above the small Tom, to capture that incessant left hand.
@@greggisbert3252 It is my pleasure believe me! Hey, you probably are already aware, but just in case not - somebody merged high quality audio with the video of Good News 1986 Perugia. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/kQ0MuzZti4s/v-deo.html
cloudview747 strikes again. If my memory is correct, I recall that first number from a video at Disneyland (also on UA-cam), possibly also the same year. In that clip, during a short drum break, he played a seemingly impossible fast single stroke roll between the snare and small tom. Took my breath away.
+erzug I am so glad you mentioned the Disneyland 1984 video and that particular drum break!! On Paul Hemmers post entitled Buddy Rich Orchestra 1984 the break comes at 2:55-3:00. Those 4 or 5 seconds are for me - and it sounds like for you - the highlight of the entire Disneyland 1984 concert! Its almost beyond belief. Mind you, Buddy would turn 67 years old in 2 weeks!! Its just insane!! And yet, that was Buddy. Year after year, right to the end, he would surprise us with incredible things we had never seen before from him - taking our breath away once again, as you say. What a powerhouse force he was. What an incredible musician of seemingly infinite innovation and creativity. Thats why we all feel the way we do about him even after all these years. He was truly One Of A Kind. By the way the name of the song is Wind Machine.

Amazing Always.
Everybody given a voice
Always had the best of the best. They loved Rich.❤
That horn player is somebody, he played everywhere!!!!!!!!
Speed and power!
Never disappoints!
Today 105 years ago GOD was reborn , he came to Earth as a child prodigy then went on through his time here to become the greatest Drummer who will ever live
Not only that he was the greatest technician in music and probably the greatest of all time .
Those of us lucky enough to see this phenomenon will never forget it .
My own feelings are the day he passed I lost my mentor , my inspiration and friend
Happy Birthday Superman
There definitely were times I saw him, when he really did seem Superhuman!
wow...The Master @work with the mighty and world famous..New York skyline in the back...awesome...
The WHAT skyline?
yeah u're wright...srry^^ it's Chicago.. :(
I was fortunate to witness Buddy Rich in the 80s!
I am SO glad you did!
So fast!
@@jgdmlw I witnessed Buddy at Carnation plaza also! 1985 and 1986 with Dave Stahl and Eric Miyashiro on lead! I recorded both!
Amazing view for the band. Like they are flying over the city. Things like that did not distract Buddy. He was a rock.
Nobody ever played Wind Machine that freek'n fast except the BUDDY RICH BIG BAND!! Cheers to Cloud!!!
No doubt, the band is smokin' on that tune! I sure do miss him Brian. I've been thinking about him more than ever, as his birthday is coming the end of this month.
@@cloudview747 I listen to him all the time. He is still with us brother!!
Love the snare pops with the sax solo just after 4:35
I don't think it was coincidence. ;)
Thanks for pointing that out. I don't think I noticed it before. Beautiful.
Tight tight ‘tightest’
The GOAT….without doubt..🥁
Groovemeister!! I want that ride cymbal!
You and me both!
It's in the Smithsonian, with those drums!
Buddy Rich was a great drummer
Oh yeah!
LOVE IT !
+drse2 Excellent!
Chewing gum whilst playing the waay he does is next level.
Buddy in fine form here!
This is great - Eric on Lead Trumpet makes it all the better. Thanks for posting! JP
+James Zanker You are very welcome.
A very young Eric Miyashiro...
B really likes this drumset.
Think he switched to Yamaha briefly but went back to the classic Slingerland Radio Kings until he died.
@@InflatablePlane
Not Yamaha, he had a prototype dw
kit custom built to his specs.
The band is swinging on this day! They came ready to play.
✨✨😎🌹Buddy , like absolutely No-Other !!!👍🏻✅✨🙏🏼
Wind Machine. Never heard BR play that Count Basie piece before. Amazing.
I love it too. There are actually many videos and audios of BR playing Wind Machine. Check them out. Especially watch the Disneyland 1984 video concert and marvel at the brief drum break he does near the end of the song.
9:00 wow so beautiful
Hi Bliegs- nice to see you man
Amazing.
Give Bird & Dizzy a ☎️ They’ll tell you what’s up!!! 🥁🥁🥁🥁
Count Basie considered Buddy a “son.” Rich also cancelled an entire South Africa tour because his black bassist wasn’t granted a work visa.
Thanks!
+Jan Mårtensson You are most welcome.
Unfortunately no.
Very annoying when someone yells that out, especially when it's during a quieter passage in one of Buddy's drum solos.
@@cloudview747 At least they aren’t yelling, “FREEBIRD!!!”
A Close Encounter of the Rich Kind!
Always thoroughly welcome I say! :-)
Eric Miyashiro is here. Buddy is the greatest drummer forever.
Eric was about 22 here. As good as he was then, Eric had a lot of growing to do. And he has!
28 August 1985 - Grant Park
The old Radio Kings sound better than anything mass-produced today.
I agree! I have this exact set, except mine has a 24in. Bass, instead of his 26". They are so fun.
Yeah, Bob Bowlby!
cloudview747! ... again, I have this entire performance too, and have had it for years. I got it from a guy that lives in Chicago and taped it off the TV when it aired. Thing is .. again .. yours has just that much MORE quality visually. HOW do you do it??!! LOVE the fact that you share all these GEMS! As mentioned... I am a subscriber! BEST!!!
+TheSoundsOfFrank My pleasure!
me and a pal fixed up a really nasty Buddy in Toronto around this time.
He most definitely was still hauling away, right to the end!
I was at that show when I was 8. December 84. Someone has a picture of me and Buddy from that night. Lost their contact info and never got a copy.
Introduced as "The Boss Drummer." Enough said.
I know, I love that intro!
He loved Themm
Miss u Marcus!!!!!!!!!
Buddy Rich (Nueva York, 30 de septiembre de 1917 - Los Ángeles, 2 de abril de 1987) fue un baterista estadounidense de jazz, representante del swing, bop y, en general, del jazz de las big bands.
At the very end, LOOK AT THAT CROWD CHEER !!
Yes! 😊
Thats MIke Boone on bass......KILLIN IT DAMN MIKE
The older you got the better he sounded.
He truly was The Drum Wonder.
So true true man
Just look at that left hand!!!
The left hand of Buddy Rich - one of the Wonders of the World.
@@cloudview747 A thing to behold, isn't it?
RIP. DRUMMER BUDDY RICH. 🌟🥁🇺🇲
82-Montreal--The Carioca - only original swing era chart the band played
Cottontail. Duke's tune from 1940.
What the what happened to just the solo forced to watch whole concert ugh
thanks for the share!
Can you tell me the break down of that kit he played at Chicago JF on this clip. Thanks Man
Ed Man actually no I can't!
Bassist here is Mike Boone.
+MarkR1957 thank you
oh..yeah..that's really sad.. :/
Barry died on the band bus 0n I-40 east of kingman AZ. Jeez that must have been horrible!!
BUDDY RICH - OUR BOSS

cloudview747 strikes again.
+cloudview747 So much for that "slowing down as he got older" BS.
