  • I suppose it's better late than never. Thanks to the generosity of a gracious individual I've been able to take a look the growing ever more popular MiSTer FPGA hardware. It's goal of arcade accuracy has long been an interest of mine but I've been unable to experience this first hand until now. Oh, and there is a little thing called the MiSTerCade on it's way as well.

    One of my favorite things about MiSTer is the audio reproduction. The devs have incorporated MDFourier to pretty much match the original hardware exactly, and it's awesome. People have been trying to get Analogue and RetroUSB to do this as well and they haven't even acknowledged MDFourier's existence AFAIK.

One thing is abundantly clear with either solution: the MiSTer made my previously dedicated Neo Geo MVS-machine a much more versatile experience. So many great arcade games I couldn't dream of playing and the fantastic console libraries now running native. I'm not talking about Final Fantasy VI, I'm talking about games like Final Soldier and Axelay. Me and my wife play 1v1 Dr Mario native on the Astro City. It's such a cool experience!

    I love the MiSTer and FPGA. When I first found out about the MiSTer I wondered could it run later systems, I found a YT video from RTL Engineering that goes into detail about what the current DE10 nano can support and offers a suggestion about more powerful (and expensive) alternatives for FPGAs that could support up to 6th gen consoles in his estimation.

      I have little doubt this will be an ongoing development thing from the hardware perspective as well. I know current discussion is that entering into 3D era is much more difficult than 2D, but give it time. In ten years I’d like to see where we are in that regards. Someone always finds a way.

    Great video, man. Glad to hear the thoughts of another arcade collector on the Mister project. My buddy has been into Mister for a couple years, but he's been out of physical board/game collecting for a while so it's nice to hear the perspective of somebody that values retro arcade collecting. I switched back to a physical collection of games a few years back after being digital for classic games for almost a decade for a variety of reasons, but I've been specifically interested in the Mister to put in a Jamma cab for games other than Neo/Naomi/CPS2. I still love the ritual of switching game carts in consoles (which is why I still do that for my analogue consoles even though they are all jailbroken), but for most arcade games I want cycle accurate versions of and don't want to buy an old/unreliable board to further protect and store, a Mister would be a wonderful compliment to my arcade collection. Looking forward to what you have to say about the arcade/jamma adaptor your testing. Cheers!

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 роки тому +1

      I think my comment to most people who have asked if this means I’ll sell physical collection off is no. But, it does probably prompt me from purchasing future carts and maybe even a few boards. Especially in the arcade world where you can dump $500 on a pcb and then have it fail on you at some point. I just like having a reliable and accurate backup option. This has been music to my ears.

    Wow that is very generous! I have been thinking about getting MiSTer for a while now. Even been to websites and put things in my cart but just never pulled the trigger. Great video! I’m in a similar position, except I sold all my original carts so I just have the Mega Sg, Super Nt, and their respective flash carts. I play exclusively via FPGA/flash cart so this sounds like a great way to pivot and pocket some extra cash without missing out on too much. There is something to be said about the overall packaging and design of Analogue units, but man if it isn’t tempting to see what the MiSTer hype is all about.

    Even if getting cores made for MiSTer can be quite an arduous process depending on the hardware you're working with, this has been the FPGA development platform I was waiting for to finally sink my teeth into this and make cores for the arcade games I enjoy (some are becoming almost inaccessible unless you have deep pockets and alternative solutions aren't quite there yet, which is the motivation behind me getting involved with this project) along with a few side-projects along the way. I got my MiSTer in late 2018 to experiment with what was already available, and it's snowballed from there after deciding to make a core for Arkanoid. I'm hoping to get Gradius and Salamander going someday (hopefully, I can have those at least booting by about halfway through the year or a little after that), but right now, I have some older Konami designs to work on so I get the best idea of how their hardware evolved over time and make the process (hopefully) that little bit easier.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 роки тому

      I’d love to see Salamander make an appearance on MiSTer! It’s been a few years but I was able to play it at a barcade in Columbus. I’ve considered buying the pcb a few times but as you mention, boards are just becoming more and more expensive. I have hopes of seeing more Konami titles making their way to MiSTer. Best of luck with that endeavor!

      @@ScarletSprites Thanks! It won't be easy with how much logic is hidden in custom components on Konami boards, but at least with the two I'm working on now, Iron Horse and Jackal, I'm starting to get somewhere (it's mostly the graphics logic that is made excessively complicated on the Konami boards I've looked at so far). This should help for Salamander once I get to it.

    Another experience from me, I've been playing TurboGrafx 16 (RGB SCART with OSSC) games off the Terraonion SSDS3 and when the console froze for some reason, I switched it off and went to the MiSTer to continue playing the same game (using a SNAC), i totally forgot I was playing on a MiSTer. Nice! I was looking foward to hearing your perspective on the MiSTer. Im loving mine, picked it up mainly for the arcade cores (since i always wanted to collect arcade boards, but never actually bought one except a MV1FZ), but for my surprise im choosing to play alot of 8 and 16 bit console games on it, its just so convenient and the games run great, i cant even tell any difference compared to real hardware. About the arcade board collecting, realistically tight now I just dont have the space on my house to store arcade boards or the time to invest on that hobby. So its nice to know that even for an arcade collector like you the MiSTer is still enjoyable/ knowing that gives me peace of mind, its like feeling im not missing the entire arcade experience if I at least can play the games on the MiSTer =D...if that makes any sense lol

    • @ScarletSprites

      It definitely makes sense to me. There are for sure boards I will never buy or feel as though I have to buy if they’re covered on this hardware (and covered well). I’ve always liked Tapper but probably realistically was never going to spend the money on an original board. But now I feel like I have a valid and accurate option for that game. This will also be interesting to see what happens with the development of ongoing arcade multis.

    Very nice overview and as informative as ever Scarlet! I’ve been reluctant to get into MiSTer all the time I’ve been aware of it but can see myself getting on-board with it as the arcade games library available on it broadens to include a lot more of the games I have an interest in. As I understand it, that could be a while from now still but I’ve been searching for a long while for a decent way to play those titles without having to invest in actual arcade hardware (did have a MAME Bartop a couple of years ago but there were too many emulation issues in general). That being said, this becomes more compelling as it’s also currently a good alternative to the upcoming Analogue Duo which I have an interest in, but may not even be able to get my hands on if they launch it in such limited numbers as per the Pocket. I’d heard conflicting things about how easy this was/wasn’t to get up and running with though, seems pretty straightforward from what you’ve described!

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 роки тому +1

      I think if you really want to dig into the weeds and start editing scripts/ini files and the like you certainly can. But if you want a decent way to play games with minimal fuss, you can do that too. I like that it wasn’t a huge pain in the ass to get running and the menu and directories are well organized out of the gate. Aside from the first hour or two of “what are the basics of how this works”, it was pretty simple. I do like the analogue consoles as well but I’m left wondering why I need the Duo if all I’m doing is running flash carts on my Super NT and Mega SG anyways. I actually sold my Duo-RX already, which is a rare thing for me to unload hardware. It just wasn’t going to be used any longer and I knew that.

    • @G-MoneyCMB
      @G-MoneyCMB 3 роки тому +1

      @@ScarletSprites That’s interesting that you sold your Duo! Was it in light of having the ability to play the games on MiSTer now?

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 роки тому +1

      I put it up for sale shortly after Analogue announced the Duo. I’m honestly mostly an HDMI guy these days so it was appealing to me to not have to use a scaler any longer. The Duo-RX and CMVS are the last two consoles I don’t have an HDMI option for. When I got the MiSTer and confirmed TG16 worked well on it I was completely happy. The Duo-RX sold shortly after that and I wasn’t too upset, which is pretty telling.

    I usually go for # of games over quality or accuracy. I like portraying the games in neat system UI's that we can get from the PlayStation classic or even just by using unified art on the super retrocade. But I always come back to these mister reviews. What if there was a magic button for everything? What if there was one box I went to for all my emulation ? I do a couple things on my pc, couple on retrocade, couple on PSC... And for "emergency" situations for my ADD/ stuck in a car/etc, I throw snes roms on every twice-baked android potato. I love front ends like launch box and DIG, they really help validate my obsession or hobby with normal friends and family. My older brother is a programmer. I turn 26 in 2 days today. My brother introduced me to snes9x on my first personal pc when I was 5 or 6 years old. so the whole load rom> dance became boring and tiring as hell for me. If I have to navigate through command line menus to operate the Mister (still what I imagine cuz nobody says "here's how you load 30 different roms in 1 hour because.... Mental illness") I will skip mister forever, but if it's like a flash cart and I can scroll down the list of game titles I am down. Reset button or button combo to get back to a menu, that stuff I'm big on. I don't like doing snes on pc because snes9x refuses toopen full screen from launch box like fusion or fceux does. Nes looks like ass on the retrocade so generally stick to the pc for that. Anyways going in circles. I would love it if you did a video just doing a day in the life of mister mister, so to speak lol. Loading roms, looking at or changing configs.. going from an arcade game to a console game. Idk may some shmuck has done tutorial vids but that's not what I'm asking and I'm asking to hear it from your mouth, not some shmucks. The good news is that all the arcade cores, bios updates, console and computer cores update magically when you run that script. For the roms for each console I just popped the card into my PC after setup and copy pasted everything into their respective folders. After that it’s like you said, you click through folders/directory to list your myriad of roms, scroll to the one you want to play, click to launch. It’s actually pretty easy and I don’t find that I miss the pretty UI of retropie at all. In what it lacks in looks it makes up for by being slick and snappy.

    They recently did the CD games for tg16 cd and Sega CD which is amazing.
    Most of the pc cores where ported over from other older fpga boards like the MIST. I think those are the first.

Nothing to configure, setup, scrape, etc. I appreciate the simplicity. All that said, I definitely get where you’re coming from and can understand the desire to dress things up.

    I know the price for this is an issue for some, (it was for me also), but when you think about it, you are getting many, many, many, different consoles as well as computers and arcade cores for the price of maybe two system specific fpga run machines. Just something to think about if price is a concern.

      I’d agree, you get A LOT with this device. The cool thing is that new things seem to be coming out every month and it’s consistently updated as well. I’m powering on the Analogue consoles a lot less.

      There isn’t too much discussion about drifting from the DE10. Even Saturn development is now happening with the current hardware. The current setup plays just about every retro console so if the system and games you want are covered I don’t see a reason not to jump in.

Then there is the stuff that I’m less familiar with or have come to appreciate through emulation (any type) and have established a love for and want to now own. Although the arcade stuff is still growing, most of the major consoles are represented here and will give you access to some big libraries. Enjoy and good luck.
