This was incredibly instructive. I knew very little about the Mister, but this video made very clear how capable the device can be. Truly an amazing platform to experience retro devices that would be hard to get. The scene with the different platforms and games was specifically cool, and had a great selection. Some of those games I have never seen like the one showcased for the Amiga, Apple II and Commodore 64. Thank you for your hard work on this, it was very entertaining and lovely to watch.

Dude; this MR FPGA running the cycronized core at its native clock, that's amazing; without a doubt this is the best thing that ever happened in the retro world. the emulation is good, but this MR FPGA is 1.000,00 better; congratulations for the video won a subscriber

Okay...this is just amazing. I had no idea there was something beyond RetroPi. Seriously going to have to look at this and get the kids into it. Would love to play some Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tourny and Barb was a big Sonic fan growing up and my brother spent countless house with MegaMan. And then the 486 games, I played a lot of Links Golf on the 386 and of course the classic Apple IIe games.....just amazing....thanks for all the info.....

Yes! I did a livestream of it quite a while back now. It was fun to explore and shows promise but wasn't quite as smooth as original hardware just yet (at the time, constantly evolving of course).
Excellent, excellent video Rik! I've been emulating on PC using CRT Emudriver on a Radeon card output to RGB and transcoded to YPbBr, but the Retroarch CRT Switchres function has been really frustrating at times (particularly with how it handles multimonitor indexing) and often times I get so tired of messing with Retroarch that it ruins the experience. Really considering jumping down this MiSTer rabbit hole, this setup just looks awesome...
Great I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And yes I've messed with CRT Emudriver before as well (admittedly not as far as you've gone by your description) and while it's powerful the MiSTer just makes it so darn easy. I moved it around a ton for the shots I needed for this video and it's usually just a couple of settings in an ini file to make it work with a new display. Once configured all the cores mostly play nice so there is no messing around at all. Highly recommended!
@@RiksRandomRetro You know, I'm often worried about channels like yours. Great content, but *just* not getting the recognition/subs/views you should get. And a lot of them just quit, because they think it's not worth the hassle and all the work they put into their content. And I agree, you / they deserve more growth. I've seen this happen time and time again. Makes me sad, because channels like these are THE reason I am on the retro computing part of YT in a big way.

My gaming library is extensive, and so is my best friend's. The MiSTer is useful for both of us because A) We both feel like glorified electronics hoarders at this point and have practically run out of room to store/showcase our shit, and B) We both travel a lot for work. He and other friends built their MiSTers ages ago and have been pestering me to build one of my own. Glad I did; these devices suit us well.
Haha yes that was a good way to describe borderline hoarding. Which I don't do myself nope. Absolutely not. No don't open that closet nothing to see in there... Anyway yes it's such an awesome device considering how many things it does. I basically plunk down with the MiSTer more than I do original hardware any more and plan on getting more of them for sure.

Sure are! From the left you have Amiga 500, NES, SNES, Compaq 386/25M, Genesis/Mega Drive and then a Gameboy. I wanted to use some systems I had that are all represented on the MiSTer so this felt like a good way to stage that!
Regarding the price, I personally think it's an absolute bargain. As someone that's into old consoles and computers, I'm struggling to find appropriate words to describe how amazing this thing is, not just as a product but as a project that so many people have dedicated their time and effort to. Hats off to the community for making this a reality. On a different note, you mentioned about emulators and latency. Many others have brought this up too when discussing this topic. I must admit that I get slightly "triggered" when this topic comes up because I've tried searching for information about latency of some of the popular emulators and haven't been able to find any solid information, just people on Reddit/forums stating figures or frame counts without any further explanation or based on feel (I consider this information very dubious). I've found this to be extremely frustrating, so when it gets mentioned it just reminds me of my frustration. I fully acknowledge that it's a perfectly reasonable thing to bring up when discussing emulators and that it's absolutely true, but because I've been reminded of my frustration, the unreasonable, belligerent 80 year old man that seems to live in my head pipes up with "If you can't back that statement up with some figures, keep it to yourself!". I'd really love to see someone take a few different hardware configurations (low, medium and high end PC and/or a selection of SBCs) and compare them to the real hardware (while documenting the signal chain for each).
As far as price goes yes it's hard to beat when you consider all the things it does right out of the box. Can it truly and properly replace the real hardware? On some levels probably not but with it acting like a flash cart and a scaler for countless systems it sure is great. As far as the lag yes I can understand that frustration. In my video I didn't want to do a deep dive on that topic beyond what I said because yes if you really dig into that statement you should have proper facts to back it up. I could try and do this but I lack the equipment (besides just frame counting via slow motion) to truly do it justice. However it has been covered and one great resource for this is retrorgb.com. There are articles on this but also videos on UA-cam (same channel name, RetroRGB) where he's done extensive lag testing using a Time Sleuth device that captures the true lag in a ms format on a number of systems/setups. So yes I get it, no denying you shouldn't make claims without something to back it up but in my case I try and keep it on a surface level so the video stays on that introductory level versus a total deep dive. Hopefully doesn't sound like I'm dodging the question but that's my take on it for this video!

I just have a "bee in my bonnet" and it's something that gets mentioned regularly. I'm a fan of Bob's and am already subscribed to RetroRGB. It's possible I've missed some tests he's done, so I'll have to take a look. I also own a Time Sleuth (after watching Bob's review). I work at a place that sells TVs and tested all the TVs at work (because I'm a nerd lol). If you or anyone reading this is interested in the input lag on Panasonic TVs, let me know because it isn't well documented due to Panasonic's current absence from the US market (most sites/people conducting tests seem to be US based). For me, it's impractical to go the original hardware route for a number of reasons. I live in a PAL region and as I'm sure you're aware, we received many unoptimised games for decades. I really don't want to deal with the hassle of importing or modifying systems as well as importing games. I'm also not crazy about the idea of trying to source controllers and other peripherals in good condition or refurbishing poor condition ones. On top of that, I have very limited space available. I guess it comes down to mentality. While I understand the appeal of playing on original hardware, I'm most interested the preservation aspect of projects like MiSTer and emulators. I view it much in the same way as art and literature. The original hardware is much like an original art piece or antique in that we just have to enjoy and appreciate it while it's still here. Software however is like literature and we can preserve it even after the pages it was written on have turned to dust. The existing hardware out there is ageing, becoming harder to obtain and will eventually cease to function. With literature, it's the words that are important and we can copy or scan those words to preserve them. With video and audio, we can digitise them. Due to the nature of software however, we also need to replicate the functionality of the hardware it runs on accurately to preserve the experience. I'm so grateful there are talented people out there that recognise this and contribute their time and effort so that we can retain these experiences even after the hardware has become unobtainable or no longer works.
Hello. Great movie. Which components does your mister consist of? I am trying to buy it, but so far I want a starter version which I can play on the scart or vga cable right away. What do I need?
Hello there. In my case I have the DE-10 nano board, the analog I/O board and then the USB expansion board. If you want to play with analog out you'll want that analog I/O board or you can get the HDMI dongle to use "direct video". The wiki can describe that better than I can but I haven't tested scart myself. It works great for VGA out however with that setup you can't do HDMI at the same time. The analog I/O board will support both. So to summarize you'll just need the DE-10 nano, a memory upgrade, micro SD card and then either the analog I/O board or a HDMI to VGA "direct video" dongle.
In this case it just allows the use of an external midi device where the original system supported it. So for the DOS, Amiga and Atari ST cores just as an example it can reproduce that midi output. You can then either use real hardware (like an MT-32, SC-55) or emulation (Pi with a header or pure software) to get that enhanced midi sound. So in short it allows specially composed midi soundtracks to be used where supported. And it sounds good doing it!
Yes there sure is! Like Charles mentioned there is an AO486 core that performs about as a 486 75 MHz machine if I recall with all that entails. There is a great DOS game pack from a fellow that goes by flynnsbit so I recommend looking up his videos if you want a crash course. Works great!
Word of advice concerning the AO486 core: that core is basically brushing the limits of what the MiSTer fpga can do. Compatibility and stability are a bit hit and miss with. That's not due to a lack of love for the core, it's just that the core devs are working at the limits of the hardware. So effectively, consider the core more a 486 SX 33 to 66 mhz on average.
Yes agreed if you only use it for analog output the direct video method is great! I do very much enjoy having 2 outputs however at which point the I/O board is still a great choice.
For this video I was using a Startech USB3 external capture device. That said, since the MiSTer outputs standard HDMI virtually any modern capture card works great!

The mister is fantasic i use and stream on it all the time its pretty much replaced all my console mmm.
Yes! I love original hardware but the MiSTer really has taken over as my go to retro device of choice when I'm playing older console games.

Got the nvidea shield tv pro 2019 for newer emulation
I've thought about getting one of those as well it seems like they are just a powerhouse for emulating newer stuff that isn't on the MiSTer.

In this case it just allows the use of an external midi device where the original system supported it. So for the DOS, Amiga and Atari ST cores just as an example it can reproduce that midi output. You can then either use real hardware (like an MT-32, SC-55) or emulation (Pi with a header or pure software) to get that enhanced midi sound.
So in short it allows specially composed midi soundtracks to be used where supported. And it sounds good doing it!

Yes!! There is a 486 core!
Yes there sure is! Like Charles mentioned there is an AO486 core that performs about as a 486 75 MHz machine if I recall with all that entails. There is a great DOS game pack from a fellow that goes by flynnsbit so I recommend looking up his videos if you want a crash course. Works great!
Word of advice concerning the AO486 core: that core is basically brushing the limits of what the MiSTer fpga can do. Compatibility and stability are a bit hit and miss with. That's not due to a lack of love for the core, it's just that the core devs are working at the limits of the hardware. So effectively, consider the core more a 486 SX 33 to 66 mhz on average.

Yeah like all other electronics it's a tough time right now. I've seen some luck ordering directly from Terasic so that may be an option!

Yes agreed if you only use it for analog output the direct video method is great! I do very much enjoy having 2 outputs however at which point the I/O board is still a great choice.
what cap card you use?
For this video I was using a Startech USB3 external capture device. That said, since the MiSTer outputs standard HDMI virtually any modern capture card works great!
