I still want a remake of that Satellaview FDC game😅 Easily forgotten about due to the way it originally came out, it is the third game; or at least, it's a candidate for that title, and that's enough for me.
I loved the Famicom Detective Club games on Switch - definitely didn't expect to see the series make a return! I have no doubt a lot of people are disappointed this isn't any other game all those wild rumours kept going on about, but I'm definitely happy. 😊
I was so happy seeing the announcement, and I had a bunch of friends all tagging and messaging me about it. XD I’m a BIG murder mystery fan, and the remakes are among my favorite Switch games.
Technically, “Emio - The Smiling Man” is actually the FOURTH game in the Famicom Detective Club series, the third game was a Satellaview exclusive called “BS Tantei Club: Yuki ni Kieta Kako”. Very little is known about it, though, so it’s not surprising that most people don’t know about it, if they know about Famicom Detective Club at all. Still, surreal to see this series get a new game, hopefully it does well and people enjoy it!
Using a light ARG to tease a new Famicom Detective Club is one of the most bizarre and unexpected marketing choices Nintendo has made in a while. Really smart way to get non fans interested in what is still a relatively obscure series.
@@blau6832”ARG” stands for “alternate reality game”, which is a type of puzzle hunt that encourages lots of players to work together and solve the puzzles and mysteries to progress through a story. The Emio teaser was NOT that, so you can ignore the original commenter.
i was excited for a new nintendo horror ip and instead got the much better news that famicom detective club gets to live after those remakes came and went. instantly my most anticipated game of the year
I kind of been wanting to pick up the remakes, But I don't think I'd ever get around to them, but now I'm thinkin about picking them up since I know the series is continuing.
The outcome I was actually hoping for! Sure a new IP would’ve been great but hey, actually making a new entry after those really good remakes is awesome! Although $50 is a big ask… Hopefully they can iron out those heavy Famicom era brute force / trial and error edges out for this. Maybe, MAYBE afterwards they can remake the Satellaview one? Maybe? It’s wild to think Ayumi actually has more than a slim chance at being in the next Smash. I mean, hey, people made the Emio in Smash jokes soooo…
Ngl I wasn’t expecting this game to be a Famicon Detective Club game. I played the remakes and I fell in love with them. Now I’m even more hyped. So many hood games
You can say what you want about Sakamoto's approach to game stories and his phobia of joystick movement, but something i always appreciate is seeing how much he cares about the projects he works on. I had heard the possibility of this being a new Famicom Detective Club, so it's quite nice seeing that turn out to be true. While this might not be the traditional horror game many people were expecting, i honestly find this way more interesting. The idea of a new Nintendo horror ip was intriguing, but the horror world is kinda full of elegantly dressed men with an [interesting accessory/detail] in the face, so a more story focused urban mystery type thing is way more special in my opinion. I kinda have to go out of my way to buy *any* game, specially one in a series i know very little about, but this has definitely sparked my interest! I might need to get over my bad habit of watching every game i'm curious about on UA-cam instead of playing it...
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Yoshio Sakamoto not only wrote the stories of Famicom Detective Club 1 & 2 but also Super Metroid. Yoshio Sakamoto's work on Famicom Detective Club 1 & 2's story is the reason why the Metroid series has been story-driven since Super Metroid. Without the Famicom Detective Club games, the Metroid series would have taken a completely different direction.
Man, there's so much to talk about with this reveal, I don't even know where to start... I suppose I should start by saying people were going to be disappointed with what Emio truly was, even if it wasn't a Famicom Detective Club game. I keep coming back to this comparison, but it's like when Cloverfield released it's first teaser and the studio keep quiet as to what they released actually was. This caused people's imaginations to run wild, up to and including someone mishearing "I've seen it, it's alive" as "I've seen it, it's a lion" and think this was actually a secret Voltron movie, and because there was no one to officially disprove any speculation, the Voltron movie ended up gaining a surprising amount of traction up up the movie finally came out and realized it was a found-footage monster movie... Which is exactly what it looked like from it's teaser, which left people wondering why J.J. Abrams and the studio were so insistent on hiding what it really was in the first place. While I don't want get into Abrams's "Mystery Box" Ted Talk, I do think this was still brilliant marketing on Nintendo's part; had they announced it initially as a Famicom Detective Club game, I doubt "Emio" would have gotten the traction it did when they initially teased it and the Internet went crazy meming Emio to oblivion. I've seen people admit that they're interested in this game because of the Emio thing, and I've also seen people said they became MORE interested in this game now that they know it's a FDC sequel! And to those of you disappointed that this isn't a straight up horror game, at the very least, this is still a unique situation because the game is still an M-rated game made in-house at Nintendo, as opposed to one of their subsidiaries or partners making an M-rated game that they then proceeded to publish. It still feels very un-Nintendo-like, even if it is through an established franchise. Now as for what Yoshio Sakamoto said, it's fascinating enough to be it's own whole separate discussion (I told you there's a lot to talk about). Firstly, by the sounds of it, this is just something Sakamoto wanted to do after doing the FDC remakes, which I think people should take into consideration when it comes to "lesser-known Nintendo IPs getting another shot". This game wasn't the result of good sales or fans asking for it, it was the result of one of Nintendo's longest-standing employees using their seniority to get a game made. That's not a bad thing, but it does mean that unless someone in high standing within Nintendo wants it, we still won't be getting a new Wario Land or Golden Sun or Kid Icarus or any of those other lesser-known Nintendo series people want new games for anytime soon. As for what he says about the game, I do think it's interesting how he specifically said the ending was going to be divisive and anticipates a lot of people debating about it, which in and of itself makes me want to play it just to see what it is. Of course, given that one time he tried to do a story he really wanted to tell with Metroid: Other M, I'm not sure how receptive people will be towards him as a storyteller, but like I said, I was basically intrigued by all this the moment I saw the Emio teaser, and even now knowing that "Emio" is an urban legend about a guy who kills sad people while putting a paper bag with a smiley face on it over their head... Well, I'm still intrigued! Definitely going to be getting this game, physically specifically (glad it's actually getting a physical release)!
I bought the remakes when they launched, as an Ace Attorney fan, I thought I might enjoy them someday. I haven't gotten around to playing them yet, but I think this announcement is as good an opportunity as any to finally dive in! Starting the Missing Heir, right now!
The Missing Heir was the first one released, but The Girl Who Stands Behind is the first chronologically. I played MH first but I kinda wish I had started with GWSB. But you can’t really go wrong either way!
Nintendo knew the game would be instantly passed over in the direct. i mean heck, i'd arguably consider Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario Party Jamboree to be skips. Dragon Quest 3 is just absolutely too gigantic for a mid-November release to risk releasing a potentially horror-themed visual novel for their intended audience (japan) that might skip it for said game. September and October already got hard-pencilled for Zelda and Jamboree, and even Brothership is a early-November release. guess it's a game that got plopped in August to say "hey, we have a new game each month". other than December. but i'd guess they'd reveal a 2025 direct, then go "oh, here's some 2024 games", maybe Mameda no Bakeru? probably deserves a stab due to being a new franchise by Good Feel that isn't attatched to pre-existing Nintendo IP where gameplay styles might be stifled due to conflicts over series rep. (think Yoshi, Peach and Kirby. though Kirby was slotted into Prince Fluff's game for IP recognition)
Now I do want an Emio amiibo 🤔 Also thanks for not treating it like a "disappointment", I believe it's pretty magical that we received a sequel 30 years later.
Really excited for this! 🎉, about Sakamoto saying it will have a divisive ending, I think it might mean a familiar face is going to be doing something we didn’t expect, I even have a very early theory about it, and I really hope I’m wrong about it 😅, just few more weeks to clear the doubts!
Don’t get me wrong I’m all for Sakamoto to be getting his hands gritty with his past projects that might lead to help of new IPs. But like most it’s disappointing that the games don’t use real life footage like the teaser. Then again past Metroid commercials have mostly used live action. Maybe it could have been just as effective having a ghostly Iwata figure holding a banana
Definitely very excited for this game now! Even though I was impressed by the marketing, I have no interest in horror games. But I love visual novels! Never thought that this would be a game that insterested me, but now I might actually pick it up!
Its not what I expected from this and I'm NGL it didn't exactly shoot to the top of my most wanted list after the reveal, but I'm glad the fans of this series are getting another entry.
I'm seriously been sleeping on the Famicom Detective Club series. I'm a huge fan of Ace Attorney and AI: The Somnium Files and I always forget about this series. 😅
I'm just hoping he's done as good a job as he's well known for. People kinda forget he's partly responsible for the debacle that was Metroid: Other M. I don't mean to drag it up, but that slip will perpetually make me unsure.
To be honest, at first, I was disappointed. I hoped it was something new like a new horror IP or something related to eternal darkness but after watching the announcement by the dev, I like it and I wan to buy it. It really seems like they are passionate about this project and that they are proud of what they are doing so I will play it. It even convinced me to try the other famicom detective games.
Don't get me wrong. I am so excited to hear that this series after so many years is getting revitalized. But I was wanting something more akin to Silent Hill or Fatal Frame type of horror game. From the sounds of it, I imagine it will be visual novel like the other games.
Not really, the Famicom is an iconic enough aspect to the Nintendo brand that referencing it in titles wouldn't be that weird, it has a very different status from something like The Gamecube, "Gamecube Detective Club" would be a very weird thing to call a Switch game lol, but Famicom not so much.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: The Famicom Detective Club games are *NOT* Visual Novels, they are *First-Person Graphic Adventure Games.* Graphic Adventure Games focus on (but not limited to) player interaction, exploration, and puzzle/problem-solving. On the other hand, Visual Novels focus more on reading and have limited player interaction, though text choice-based progression systems are used for multiple routes and endings (similar to a choose-your-own-adventure book). In Japan, a distinction is made between Visual Novels and Adventure games in Japan, where games like Ace Attorney, Snatcher and Danganronpa are categorised as "ADV"-type (short for Adventure) games, while games like Clannad, Fate: stay/night, and Higurashi: When They Cry are categorised as "NVL"-type (short for novel) games, though this distinction is lost as Japanese Graphic Adventure Games are often categorised as Visual Novels by Westerners. This is mainly due to them sharing similar presentation elements (e.g., Text Boxes & Anime Visuals) despite having differing gameplay elements, as well as Westerners using the term "Visual Novel" differently compared to Japanese devs and gamers. Gameplay-wise, the game descends from Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii's The Portopia Serial Murder Case (Specifically the Famicom Port) than the true novel-type games that would come out later, like Chunsoft's Sound Novel Otogirisou (Super Famicom, 1992) and Leaf's Shizuku (NEC PC-9801, 1996), it's first entry in the Leaf Visual Novel Series and the game that popularised the term "Visual Novel".
A little disappointed its not a new IP i thought it will be nintendo doing a reverse-horror game of some sort. Guess i am reading too much on a teaser alone.
I think people are going to be split on this. A lot of people thought this was going to be darker based on these tease only to find out the game has an anime art style.
It can still be very dark? I don't know why the anime artstyle would be limiting that. DDLC has an anime artstyle and plenty of other VNs and anime get extremely dark. Though I can understand that the teaser would've given a very different image to the end product for most people.
@@ridgenyan-botxv367 yea that's what I meant. Visually the teaser had a much darker mature vibe which I think made a lot of people think Fatal Frame / Silent Hill, but then it turns out looking like an Ace Attorney sequel. Just tonely different.
I'm not a fan of visual novels, so I was disappointed this was not a survival horror game. It's a skip for me but I would be interested in seeing reviews and gameplay.
That’s weird that you specifically said the remakes sold well. Where did you hear that? The last number we got was 20,000 sold in Japan. If it sold poorly there it must have sold even worse in the US
I actually am! I kept flip flopping back and forth on if i wanted it to be pure horror or a thriller, and i imagined nintendo itself would lean more toward thriller due to their more family-friendly m.o. So im not surprised, and im not disapppointed! I love detective thrillers and visual novels! Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick remain some of my favorite games. I also know a lot of people also view steins;gate as some of the best visual novels, so i imagine that'll be exciting for fans of that series. I will say tho the only thing i currently find lacking ia the visual style. Both the UI and character designs from what we've seen are just..very bland?? Theres not much personality at all. Thats the only eh thing for me

It makes me excited if Nintendo will do more surprise franchise revivals like this. What other series could they just suddenly bring back into life? Like what they did with Another Code Recollection, Metroid Dread, Super Mario RPG, or Mario & Luigi (post-Alphadream)?
Emio seems like a... shy guy. ;)
I still want a remake of that Satellaview FDC game😅 Easily forgotten about due to the way it originally came out, it is the third game; or at least, it's a candidate for that title, and that's enough for me.
Emio for Smash Bros. 6. Our first Famicon Detective Club rep.
XD
I’m a BIG murder mystery fan, and the remakes are among my favorite Switch games.
No one expected this. So glad this series is still going
Nintendo Life was first chatting about the Emio video, but now you have surpassed them in providing the answer. Conglatulations
Using a light ARG to tease a new Famicom Detective Club is one of the most bizarre and unexpected marketing choices Nintendo has made in a while. Really smart way to get non fans interested in what is still a relatively obscure series.
There was nothing arg about it. It was just a teaser. There was no marketing outside of that in the real world
Literally nothing about it was an arg its just a light teaser stop making things up
Can you internet people stop assuming I know all your abbreviations. ToT
@@twincherries6698 Worst thing about the internet is that anyone can just say anytihng
Although $50 is a big ask…
Hopefully they can iron out those heavy Famicom era brute force / trial and error edges out for this.
Wow! I'm so excited!
I loved the FDC remakes we got a few years back, this is SO much up my wheelhouse, day one buy
I'm excited, but a little bit nervous about his comments regarding the ending being divisive.
@captLizzie Good to know! I'll consider it!
I'm so excited for this! If for no other reason than the first two games finally going on sale after like 4 years in my wishlist -_-
I’m so glad that FDC is back, and with a physical copy!
And that's not counting third party games and other titles that don't have a Switch release. October is filled with Sonic and Dragonball new titles
This is the 4th entry for the Famicom detective club
That's actually really cool
We had the laughing man from ghost in the shell now we have the smiling man :)
I WANTED THIS FOR YEAAAAARS
I still can't believe that Famicom Detective Club is getting a new game before Kid Icarus. Also, Emio looks like a Batman villain.
I kind of wish it was new, but I’m even more glad to see they’re making more of this series. I’ve never tried it, but maybe I should now
Now I do want an Emio amiibo 🤔 Also thanks for not treating it like a "disappointment", I believe it's pretty magical that we received a sequel 30 years later.
I'm really happy to see a video that's excited about the game and not whining about how it wasn't what they wanted
Love Famicom Detective Club! This might be my game of the year
Really excited for this!
I hope Derrick touch this franchise soon because he is busy streaming with Unicorn Overlord.
A new FDC game is an unexpected treat
EMIO FOR SMASH
The Metroid guy and the Famicom Detective Club guy. Hmmmm. Metroid Dread had EMI, and this game has EMI(O). No relation, of course.
Ive never played a game in this style. Im interested, especially since the Metroid guy is involved. Think I should try it?
"Brilliant marketing."
LMFAO.
Well, Nintendo just got everyone to buy the first two games. Genius!
it would be weird to call this Famicom detective club but probably should keep it for consistency sake.
I mean, the remakes kept the name, so it makes sense that this game would also do that.
I have to imagine Nintendo Entertainment System Detective Club didn’t sound as coherent.
I hope that if this game sells well, we get more M-rated Nintendo games
No, that goes against everything that made Nintendo approachable.
What would be such a divisive ending?....Is Ayumi going to die...?
Hope not I love her!
@@minakoarisato1506 ME TOO! I'm so excited to see her again~
Wasn't there a third Famicom Detective Club released through the Satellaview?
Not anymore. :(
Lost memories in the snow is now a lost memory
I feel bad for anyone who thought this was like some new horror game from Nintendo.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: The Famicom Detective Club games are *NOT* Visual Novels, they are *First-Person Graphic Adventure Games.*
Graphic Adventure Games focus on (but not limited to) player interaction, exploration, and puzzle/problem-solving.
Nintendo releases 15 second video on Emio = GVG makes hour long video.
Nintendo releases almost 3 min. video on Emio = GVG makes 4 min. video
A little disappointed its not a new IP i thought it will be nintendo doing a reverse-horror game of some sort. Guess i am reading too much on a teaser alone.
I am very exited. Never thought that we will get new game at series. FDC is great!
Wowie…
Never knew I’d get myself into another franchise.
SO HAPPY
Don’t be fooled by the anime style, FDC is a true horror franchise, you would know if you had played the existing games.
Wow, I completely forgot about famicom detective club. The game looks nice though
I loved the remakes! Hyped!
I'm not a fan of visual novels, so I was disappointed this was not a survival horror game. It's a skip for me but I would be interested in seeing reviews and gameplay.
3rd game is the Sattelaveiw Lost memories in the snow
i feel like I'd play this if it wasn't anima, I love anima but would love an original/ more unique art style to be drawn in
They better not hold back on the dark stuff in the story.
honestly I wanna support this game purely on the basis of wanting to see Nintendo put out more m rated stuff in the future
Was hoping for a survival horror action game.
The SpongeBob and Patrick on a rollercoaster meme never fails
Very nice!
I have been having a field trip reading all the disappointing comments about this big reveal on the internet.
That’s weird that you specifically said the remakes sold well. Where did you hear that? The last number we got was 20,000 sold in Japan. If it sold poorly there it must have sold even worse in the US
Those numbers were for physical copies sold only in Japan until June 2021 (around one month after the release).
@@TheMinchio usually if numbers are good they update them
@@TheDreadedZero You will more likely have to find Japanese sources for that, obviously numbers are bigger because that didn’t include digital either.
horror is not even a category in eshop's search
I saw multiple people mention that possibility before.
Thats the only eh thing for me
Do we know if there is a physical copy?
Given it is a AAA title, and not an indie game, I'd expect it to have one
Please drop a physical release
