Dear Dr. Jones, I would live to see you open your own pet store where you sell only good & healthy foods, homeopathic meds, safe toys, etc. You are well informed, knowledgeable and you do research for your love of animals. "Dr. Jones Love".
Thanks Warren- great idea!
Never used them. Never will.Thank you once again for your kind and loving videos.
I love Dr. Jones. He's very informative and truthful. I will continue to watch his videos. Dr. Jones, please keep up the great work.
Thanks so much Doc Andrew for being here!
Bob&Razzle&I love ya💕
Thanks
Thank you for your calm, rational approach.
Welcome
Your doggie is saying “you definitely should give me a pig ear”! 😆
Thanks for the update Dr Jones.♡
Welcome
Good choice Tula.
Dog food advisor already sent me an email about this it was at least 2 weeks ago
Am a new subscriber...what a breath of fresh air!
Thank you and welcome to my channel! Hope you'll find my other contents also helpful.
Thank you doctor, i have occasionally but I'll STOP now. HAVE a blessed day
Welcome
Tula is smart and has great taste!
I agree :-)
Thanks for important information 💕
Welcome
Make your own. I clean, boil and put in the dehydrator
Such a cute 'duo' I have to say. And look at those innocent eyes at the end of your video. Tula says 'Dad my life is in your hands.'
But honestly, she is not sold on those pig ears. She knows exactly what is good for her, and especially those special treats dad made for her.
Doc, talking about treats, I have a question for you. I make treats for my dogs with bonemeal and other ingredients which I bake, cut into bite-size square and freeze. I give them 2 squares a day. Is that acceptable would you say? They absolutely love them and can't wait for treat time every day.
Thank you for your videos. I absolutely watching them. Elaine from South Africa 💘🐾
Thank you for keeping us updated Doc. Most of the meat industry is a nightmare. It’s no wonder so many people and animals get sick. 😐 I’ve learned so much from your channel and my dogs are so much healthier the last two years. I’m proud to be a Patreon even if it’s only a small monthly donation. Your advice has helped me so much more than my own vet. Become a Patreon to this great channel! It’s easy! Every little bit helps😊👍
Veronic Salas. So true. I dont even think meat is good for us humans anymore.
I feed my dog raw 80/20 hamburger quite a bit as a treat and they love it! It has been frozen and is sometimes semi-frozen when I serve it to them. So far no one has gotten ill, me nor my three dogs. I also know that the minimal amount of ground bone within the hamburger strengthens their stomachs. They also get canned salmon, on a regular basis as well as canned chicken with their kibble once a day. Their other beloved treats are chlorophyll chews and green multi-vegetable/ fruit tablets that contain broccoli, cauliflower, blueberries and several other veggies and fruits. So far, so good and my oldest is a 14 year old Liver Spot Pointer! All house dogs but have the run of an acre property. Great video, Dr. Jones.
Great options
Back in 2002, we bought "pigs ears" for our dog. He became very aggressive over it! And we took them away and have never bought them again. Now I'm glad!
We have been adding "Boost Me " to our dog's food and for the most part we like it. It's freeze dried. Made by Trudog. They also have Feed Me. It's not cheap, but they are worth it. If you have any information on this product, we would appreciate it!
They stink too. Today is my Shannon's 13th birthday, shes having an extra salmon strip because I forgot to order doggy cupcakes. Its ME that forgetting bothers, shes my girl.
Hi Andrew, I give my dog a pig ear once about every other month. She loves them in they help get the tartar off of her teeth. But now I think I will look for something else because I'm one of those extra cautious pet owners. Thank you for the information I appreciate you immensely 😃🙌
Welcome
Perspective!
Just shared on a dog group on facebook! ❤
Thanks
Hi what’s the dog group
Wow. My sister visits us once a week and brings my dog different treats everytime. Thank you for this information. We just dont think that it could happen to our pets. Again thank you
Welcome
Inspiring
Doctor Jones, I am grateful for you having posted this video on this topic, and the advice. I believe that your advice is always valuable. My dogs, over the years have eaten and very much enjoyed Pigs Ears as an occasional treat. I shall continue to give them as treats; but I am confused: we dog owners have always being told that dogs shouldn't eat pork; in fact I was once told by a Vet that pork is poisonous to dogs. In fact I stopped going to that particular Vet, because she hurt one of my dogs eyes by being too rough when handling her (she was a Toy Poodle, now sadly passed of old age). How can this be that pork is poisonous to dogs, when pet stores are filled with pork treats for dogs?
Hi Laurie- you are most welcome, and good question about the pork. In most cases it's because it's a inexpensive meat
Dr. Jones, I use to routinely give my dogs pig ears until the episode of one day. On that day I had given my Black Lab, Trooper, his pig ear & turned my back to do dishes. I suddenly became aware of a problem and turned around to see Trooper silently gagging/choking. I rushed to his aid by straddling his back & wrapping my arms under his chest as he slowly began collapsing. I opened his mouth to find a soggy full pig ear deep in his throat. Luckily I was able to reach enough of it to pull it out before he fully collapsed & gently pumped his chest for a full recovery. I think what alerted me was the absence of the sound of Trooper chewing his pig ear. I threw out a box of nearly 50 pig ears & never trusted to give again. Also, my dogs love riding in the car with me & I lower their window a bit to let them taste the air w/their nose. I’m always amazed by the well intentioned but ignorant practice of dog owners who with window fully down allow their pets to fully extend their faces to the wind & the VERY real danger of road debris striking the eyes. Maybe you could occasionally reference it in one of your videos! Rich
Glad your dog was OK
I want your book.
Wow!! That really is a Scare!! I don't give my Dogs Those, but for those who Do, That Should Really be Looked into To See how it Could Harm Them!! And US Too!! Thank You for This Extremely Important Information!! Thank You as Always for a Perfect Video!!
Welcome
My dogs got diarrhea from pig ears. I quit those two yrs ago.
Love you!!!!
Thanks
thank you dr jones i was feeding my dog pig ears for a treat once in awhile they had one today and they love them poor girls will have to find them something eles
Welcome
Home made venison jerky is my what my dogs get for a really special treat.
How do you ensure that the worms are dead though? I love to give my dog good, real foods, but experienced worms from venison hamburger - previously frozen and well cooked. (Never raw venison)
Wow thanks for the info I feed my dog those.
Welcome
I have been feeding raw to my two dogs for 10 years...no issues. They both have iron stomachs unlike many of the dogs belonging to my kibble feeding friends.
I started feeding my Mini Bully raw for the past 8 months and all skin issues i was having, have vanished. I also changed his dry food as well. No more MSG.
I switched to all raw. Raw chicken, the bones help their teeth. Beef and turkey. Lightly cooked vegetables broccoli, brussel sprouts, green beans etc. I cut fresh fruit up for them. They eat it all. They are doing so much better. It's even bringing back their darker coat. The minature Poodles are over all doing so much better on the raw.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WARNING , PASSED TO FRIENDS , I DON'T GIVE THEM TO MY LITTLE ONE , HEALTHY LIVING FOR DOGS SHOULD BE A PRIORITY FOR ALL OWNERS , LOTS OF GOOD ADVICE , BEST WISHES, L***
Welcome
I bought a dentleys dog chew pig ear, could me and my dog get sick by this still?
my dog got a skin infection in her front paw that turned into a mess I will not buy pig ears or raw hides of any kind again
Do you mind explaining what the connection between these chews and the skin infection is? I feel like I'm missing something! Or is it more that you where thinking your dog has a weak immune system?
@@emmamemma4162 she would hold the treat between her paws to eat them there was something in them mixed with her siliva than absorbed through her skin
@@nancyvolker3342 Oh I see! It could also be from the treat rubbing on the skin, I guess, but staying off those kinds of treats do sound like the best option for your dog either way. I'll need to watch out for this with my dog since we feed her through toys (kongs, etc) and give her chews. Thx for explaining!
Yes, another reason not to feed these
@@VeterinarySecrets you may find the ears are soaked in a cure which is salt based, to give it that smoked taste. That alone would be an irritant for any dog.
Should we add sunflower oil to this recipe as well?
never fry with sunflower oil ./ check the BBC report
Almost 50 years of owning dogs and have only bought those once. Ended up throwing most of them out.
Yea my dogs didn't like those one even show his teeth.. so I just threw all of them away.. thank you and I will share..
Thanks
I quit giving those to my Dobie's year's ago, not for the threat of Salmonella poisoning. But because when she'd chew them down, the ears would remain rigid and contain jagged edges. They'd become lodged between her teeth and gums or even worse,, she'd swallow it. Often times the edge's caused small lacerations too.
Places like Petsmart, quit selling those products for a long time ago when they were individually wrapped, it's pretty surprising that they're on the shelves again...
Another good point
Does this imply all country's are bad or just USA. I feed my 6mth pup cut strips of ears for teething few times week, now wondering what you could replace with? Any suggestions anyone? Thanks from NZD
I'm not sure with NZD. This is a US-FDA and CDC advisory. You may read the article here: cnn.it/33w5fgT
What is your opinion on Bravecto ( and co!) please?
Best to avoid
Gave both my dogs diarrhea for weeks. Slathering on organic cold pressed coconut oil works well!
Buy all food. Keep it for a month before feeding it. This will give the companies time to find out about a recall. We will find out in time.
Is it healthier to feed a dog raw food versus cooked food? Is there a benefit to feeding raw?
Look at his past videos. Lots of great info on diet! ua-cam.com/channels/SmxWfvW7XE7lX7YeJ5LBZw.html
I just bought buffalo ear … is it dangerous too ?
Hey, Dr Jones. I also feed raw. However.. you need to research more about freezing food. Freezing does NOT kill bacteria. Only holds them in basically a "suspended animation" ... as they thaw, the bacteria can actually multiply. Only heating to a proper temperate will actually kill bacteria, and only if the bacteria is heat sensitive. (ie botulism is heat resistant ... very difficult to kill even with heat.)
Thanks Pat for the kick in the brain :-) Yes you are correct, but at times my brain freezes with the camera..
@@VeterinarySecrets 😉
Correct. We used to freeze bacteria, to be used later, in microbiology class.
Dogs getting sick from salmonella is so rare it's ridiculous! Humans should wash their hands after handling dog food/ feces and if your dog licks your hands..... Problem solved! Everyone has to freak out over everything these days......
They say a UV light kills bacteria simanella etc they have a wand type and and one to use in water. Whats your thoughts on it? Of course you don't put on skin or look at it just wave over the area your cleaning.
I would need to research it
@@VeterinarySecrets your a wonderful Dr. Thank you so much! Your eye infection video helped one of our clients dogs green tea wash. My hubby is a groomer.
I don't know why. Every time I give my service dog Dunkin pig ear treats. He will start licking his rear feet.
I throw them away. (Till someone like my neighbors give him a bag they got cheap).
I wash up his feet. Put his boots on. In 3 days he is better. Am I doing the right thing Doctor?
My dogs get raw veggies for snacks
My ratcha loves carrots!
what type of vitamains can i give my dog
What do they eat and do they have any health issues?

I have a complete dog supplement at www.thedogsupplement.com
I bought pig ears for my dog and she ignored them never ate one guessing it was a blessing
What if I dehydrate them myself wash them before and dehydrate them for 24hours

When I had a Labrador I didn't give him treats like pig ears nor rawhide. His Vet said they weren't good to give to dogs.
@@Noonecares3203 I agree he is the best around here. I have been taking my pets to him for 16 years.
I have a 2yr old red nose that is playfull and happy but doesnt want to eat at times all day is that normal?
kDawnf same story with my 9 lb yorkie, so I pick it up & refrigate the food till next feeding. I’m going to stop free feeding all three of my dogs. Two are over weight

Tnx 4 the info. I don't give my babies Any pork stuff. But a few months ago I bought some pig ears. Never Again.
There are MANY more cases of salmonella from chicken than from pork BTW..... Just saying!
Robyn Hannah Great, I've started boiling chicken for them. I have 4 big labs. And feeding them on a fixed income isn't easy.
Robyn Hannah Dog food bad, pork bad, chicken bad, produce bad, What the hell.
@@charlesdobbs4570 Don't worry, the salmonella warnings are aimed at humans handling the pigs' ears. Healthy dogs have have antibodies in their digestive tracks that take care of almost any bacteria..... Salmonella illness is almost unheard of in dogs!
Robyn Hannah Thank you. They really like the boiled chicken not happy with the rice but a little at a time should work out after a while. Have a Good one.
I realized very quick that this was tru
What is the problem when my dog upchucks white slim?
Excess salivation, or upset stomach. Typically a response to feeling sick
I found pig ears are bad along time ago when i had my pitbull and feed him pig ears. He got sick and i didnt know why until i stop giving him pig ears. Now i dont give my dogs any pig ears and wont give them any pig at all.
I never ever feed any form of Pork. Use Rabbit ears with fur on. Great protein and good for sensitive tummies. The Raw food I feed is all tested scientifically and is human grade .Thanks Dr Jones ; )
Welcome Laura
cruelty to pigs should be stopped, pig farms make way too much polution and costs too much in water use and grain use. The pigs should be pets and wild pigs. But people cant even give up one thing, not even to avoid disaster
Space Catboy
You took the words right out of my mouth! I'm vegan, so I don't eat any animals, but we are literally sitting on the verge of the next big plague solely due to hundreds of miles of pig shit buried deep in the mud. All we need is the right flood to release all that bacteria and disease, but does that stop everyone from eating hotdogs and pig ears? Hell no! God, humans are cruel and DUMB!😢
@@courtneyblue15 yeah and most of the animals grown and killed in america for meat are them shipped to china and other countries, so we get the low pay jobs and water and air pollution and lower levels in our fresh ground water for the grain to feed them and the people in the other countries get food. America is being filled with shit and robbed of resources so a few fat cats can get richer
The scary thing is that the bad place where, unfortunately, most dog treats come from has purchased the largest pork company in the US. China recently had (or is still occurring) a sickness with their pigs.
@@zhippidydoodah china bought the biggest pig farm in america
Hmmm it's unlucky to have peacock feathers indoors.
💖i don’t feed that to my pumkin ,she don’t like them
My dog got pancreatitis from a pig ear and has struggled ever since on and off. Now he has prostrate cancer maybe caused by the bowel issue and bacteria from these bouts.
OK- more risks from Pig Ears
My dog had a bacterial infection, was given antibiotics, fluids, which was very expensive. A pig ear was the cause . RAPPED in my blanket was a size of a quarter piece of pig ear . I could smell something but couldn't find , my son did, he picked it up and smelt it. It was so bad he felt like vomiting, and gagged. It was there two days . You would of thought an animal died from a decomposed animal. Never, never again did I buy a pig for him . It looked like they were stained. That was 7 yrs ago , who would think it would take all that time to be discovered. God Bless the Lords creatures!!
I mean it smelt like there was a decomposed animal in my bedroom.
I would love better advice regarding vegan diets for dogs. Bramble was he oldest vegan dog. Now I have made a strong connection with pigs and can see what they are capable of, its really upsetting to be feeding dog ears to dogs. :(
OK
@@VeterinarySecrets Great, thankyou very much indeed. I traveled down the raw meaty bone path for my dogs. I deeply regret this. My heart is broken. (*I meant pigs ears to dogs not dog ears to dogs). I won't be having another dog unless I know they can be fed a vegan diet. There is little vet support out there and have no idea which tests to ask for which would ensure the dogs are really thriving apart from appearances and energy levels etc. Wild Earth seems to be coming up with interesting products. Also there is some sort of insect food that I can't get my head around as that seems very unnatural to be feeding in high quantities. Thanks again.
I think they're bad for dogs. My dog has vomited twice the morning after eating a pig ear.
I literally feed my dogs raw pig ears and pig skin and they are perfectly healthy! This is a bunch of BS if you ask me… Don’t believe everything they tell you all I have to say!
Do people not wash their hands after feeding their pets?? Handling raw meat to prepare your own meal carries the same risk. WASH YOUR HANDS AND ANY WORK SURFACE THAT WAS EXPOSED. I never buy pig ears or rawhides. Our first dog, a chocolate lab choked on a rawhide bone that he had softened up from chewing and a huge piece of it slid down his throat. Thankfully he threw it up in the backseat of my car while rushing to the vet. Never, ever again.
If heat (350*F) kills salmonella why not put them in the oven for an appropriate period (don't know) to kill the bacteria? We used to raise pigs and retrieve the pig ears and cook them ourselves and didn't have any problems. I do this with most of my dog's treats, just to ensure that all possible viruses, bacteria, and molds are avoided. This morning they brought me an old prairie dog carcass. Yech. They must have strong gut health...
Great point @chinookvalley..this is what google says.. 160°F/70°C -- Temperature needed to kill E.coli and Salmonella. While Salmonella is killed instantly at temperatures above 160F keeping the temperature for longer periods of time at lower temperatures will also be effective.
What If make your own pig ears.
I got salmonella from calfs I was weining... near bloody killed me.
How? You hands to you face, them licking your face?
My dog got cough please help me to treat my dog.. I love dog ..sir
I have made a couple of videos on Kennel cough. You can watch them here:
bit.ly/2Hz2wKb
Very loose stools fro pig ears....90% time
Can I ask you the same question I asked my Dog's Vet..... why are Vet's not Vegan? I asked my Vet if he knows many Vet's that are Vegan and he said none! I always assumed people become Vets because they love Animal's? Does that mean, when chosing a career, many Vet's chose it for the financial gain then? My Vet is really nice and takes in consideration my Dogs ill health, old age and my very poor financial situation yet, his Boss, who own the business and is a Vet, have lied to me about $10K operations my Dog doesn't need and over selling medication for 6 Months in advance when they know he has a terminal illness! If it wasn't for the fact that the young Vet quietly telling me that my Dog doesn't need a $10K operation, the owner of the business would be emotionally draining me of money for her own personal gain and making me go into severe debt for years! Is this illegal? Is there someone you can make a formal complaint to?
Hi Michelle. Good question, but many in vet medicine also have an agriculture background, and still fell it is OK to eat meat so long as the animals are raised ethically, and then slaughtered humanely. I grew up on a farm, so I still eat meat- but I have been questioning it more lately. Most vets do not 'go into it for money' as many other professions are far more lucrative. Unfortunately not all are ethical though. All vets have a veterinary association that you can file a complaint with.
Don't know why some say, "sweatin' like a pig!" Since pigs do not sweat, as I'm sure U know. The poisons collect in the fat and reside there. Nope,no sweating out. We don't do pork. So many other meats available, if meat is what one wants
I mean of course its a friggin pig ear. But don't feed a animal that was made originaly eating raw food, is just absurd. Their immune systems are more made to handle such things than ours. But of course dogs for instance may have adapted to not raw food but i have never seen a issue with any of these things. but why do dogs like pig ears so much is what i have wondered.
I never go to pet store for food or treats. I go to butcher shop to get my fresh smoked pig ears. Raw diet for my dog. I have never taken my dog to the vet. My dog 9 years old, half American bulldog, half Yorkie. My dog loves to run all day with other dogs at the park.
I never give my dogs anything made in China, pig ears and rawhide
Good points
you must have straaaaange pigs in the USA... for 20 years all my dogs get pigs ears around two times a week. never had problems with those. i cut back on them because they are getting expensive. they get so expensive because teh CHINESE actually buy most of them for their human consumption. apparently it's a snack for people in China. and as we all know, the number of people is definitely not declining in China.
people are pig eats to look younger, lol
