OBDII Bluetooth reader won't connect to 2 DIN Android Car Stereo

  • Long story short, it has something to do with the fact that this deck has an "external" bluetooth module. It's somewhere in the deck, but it's "external" as far as the system is concerned. There's a comment by "Ronald San Pedro" that suggested that using an ELM327 reader should work, but I HAVE an ELM327-based reader that connects 100% to my phone, but refuses to work with the deck.
Long story short: Can't use anything other than the manufacturer-provided bluetooth OBD2 reader, even if you have an ELM327-based one. I can't even confirm that because I haven't tested that.

To anyone having trouble connecting an ODB bluetooth reader there seems to be a weird quirk that is easily fixed. It's worth trying setting the Bluetooth PIN on the HEAD unit to be the same as the pin that the ODB reader is configured for. I see no reason why this should help.. the head is connecting to the reader and not the other way around but it seems to work for many people.

Head unit uses BT 2.1 which may not be compatible with the devices mentioned. Check the OBDII device specifications and if it needs BT 3 or 4 it will not work.

Having the same problem using idiagnostic elm327. What brand did you go with?
Is that stereo the pumpkin 6.2 universal with 4.4 kit kat?
I've tried two Bluetooth connectors with no luck. I've ordered a Wi-Fi/USB combo obd2 connector hoping that will work.

I was having the same issue. My android head unit reported connection but Torque reported no device. I found the ODB settings within the toque app Torque & selected the correct Bluetooth device (by Mac address) & presto, all working. The key is to identify the Mac address of the other devices you may have connected via blue tooth (phones etc) and choose the one you don't recognise.

Hi I have the same problem. I find the way to do the pairing. I pass 2 days the find the solution.
I will try to explain to you
1 step put the good pass 1234 like you do on the setting page
2 wend you are at 3:40 remove your odb device like you, make a search and add it FROM this place you have the add button on the right . I hope, I have help

  • @eduardchavez

Guys, that's is not a problem, the thing is that your radio need to have the same configuration as the obd2, supposed you have set your radio with 1234 to allow user to connect in. If the obd2 use 000 as pin, the won't be connected, so each other communicate without asking for a pin, so use 0000 or 1234 your your radio, since they are the universal default pin for every device.

Is it a good idea to leave the ELM327 plugged into the car all the time or will it drain the battery? I'd LIKE to do that for constant metrics but seems like its a bad idea. Can anyone confirm?

i have the same problem. after reading in xda developers this is the solution i found. using a usb elm327 will solve the problem. this problem occurs because the android radio uses an external type bluetooth receiver. unlike our cellphone that uses an internal type. so there are some compatibility issues.

I bought an ELM327 reader. Still no joy. It connects to all cellphones no problem - iPhones, my Galaxy S7, etc., just no ELM327 readers, and I've tried at least 3 different ones. (All the OBD2 readers connect with Bluetooth to my phone 100% without any issues.)

I'm sorry, but I have up on this a long time ago. These made-in-China piece of s*** units are too much for me. I spent way too many hours trying to diagnose. I suspect that the only unit that will work is the one that they will sell to you. It worked for me once a few years ago for like 30 seconds, but I think the fact that it worked was a glitch because it never worked ever again. I sold my RS-X and currently drive an S3 and have a cell phone holder that does not move around: a.co/860VyfB - get the holder instead of the magnet one because metal plate you'll need will interfere with wireless charging - all that current will heat up the plate instead of charging your phone (danger!).

Exactly the same pairing issue here between Android Card Head Unit (Chinese product) and Garmin HUD. Garmin HUD appears in Available Devices list but won't be paired when I tapping it from the list to connect with the unit.
I use LG Optimus VU II for my personal cell phone. The HUD pairs with the phone and the phone pairs with the unit successfully, but the HUD and the head unit does not. This makes me crazy. I mean, literally :( If there is anyone who can help me on this, PLEASE!

Sorry bud, I sold my car as I was tired of a "project car" and all the made in China problems. Buy German - lasts forever and has zero issues. I now have an Audi S3 with a cell phone holder that does not move around. Why upgrade the deck when you can upgrade the phone? You can take the phone with you when you exit the car to prevent theft. Everything that's made in China is so rushed and so cheap and flimsy and low power and unreliable and not upgradeable. I'm not going to solder, go into factory settings, buy a compatible unit or visit XDA forums to find a solution for something. I got so fed up of wasting so many damn hours of my life that when converted into a minimum wage it would have paid for the unit many times over. Enough is enough. If it's not made by Samsung or LG or Sony or Philips then it's junk and don't waste your money on it. You're better off building a custom computer using an Arduino controller or other similar dedicated android in a small box thingy. It's cheaper to build once you factor in cost of shipping and way more reliable and upgradable.

After purchasing 4 different OBD2 readers, I finally found one that works with the Android car stereo and a 03 Dodge Ram (www.ebay.com/itm/351494706732?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) The one thing I found was that the reader has to be Bluetooth 2.1, the 3.0 ones I bought wouldn't pair with stereo. But two of the 2.1 readers did pair, but wouldn't connect with the Dodge ECU.

the problem in this video is as follows:
start pairing, when it shows your module, press the magnify glass again. it will stop.
    select module
    select pair
it pairs, without a code. dont tell me why.
from that moment i have another problem. the module is paired, but all apps think it isnt. my radio is a new android 5.1.1. the seller offers a obd module, so i asked him to sell me that one since the normal elm327 connect and pair, but the apps do not agree. if it wont, this is my last option since it offers a android 5.1 car radio module:

I'm having the same issue except with Hondata S300. I just bought the new Pumpkin Android 8.0 head unit and it will connect to everything EXCEPT my Hondata S300. And I have no way around the chip because my car is OBD1 not OBD2, hell my OBD port doesn't even work. So I have no choice but to use Hondata. The radio sees it but when I click on it, nothing happens. This really makes me sad because it was one of the main reasons I bought the radio. :( I made a video of what its doing.
