- More countries have banned arrivals from the UK because of concerns at the spread of a new variant of coronavirus.
India is the latest state to suspend flights from the UK, joining Hong Kong, Canada, Switzerland and Germany.
On Sunday evening , France shut its border with the UK for 48 hours, meaning no lorries or ferries will be able to sail from the port of Dover.
As queues grow in Kent, the prime minister will chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee later.
Belgium and the Irish Republic have also suspended flights. India will halt flights from Tuesday evening until the evening of 31 December.
Austria is also set to bring in a ban, while Bulgaria has suspended flights to and from the UK from midnight. Unlike the short-term measures in many other nations, its ban lasts until 31 January.
European Union member states are due to meet in Brussels later to discuss a co-ordinated response.

@@rhonahall2807 Just to point out that in terms of a travel ban, New Zealand & Australia acted in unison & did exactly the same thing, and took all independent South Pacific countries along for the ride with them, returning their citizens home via one of the big 2 to ensure they were protected.
You also should look at Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia if you want to see amazing success despite the odds! Vietnam shares a land border with China & has 95 million people but has only 1,400 cases, compared to NZ's 2,100 in a population of just 5 million!
I suggest looking more at western culture Australia to learn from, as Australia has mastered screwing stuff up with covid & then recovering from it, so there's far more that can be learnt from Australia than from NZ because of that. NZ's (and Taiwan) are the long term examples of what to do next pandemic to prevent it taking hold, but aren't that useful for where most countries are right now. Singapore is another good example for western countries to learn from

It's difficult to say. Some strains of the virus are close to disappearing, while new mutations are being discovered. That's normal for a virus. Some of the new strains are less deadly, which is good. All will be well eventually.

Well...sainsbury's complain already about empty shelfs in the fruit and vegetable isle. But I'm well prepared, my husband went mad shopping due first lockdown. He bought even a huge industrial deep freezer for the garage. I can't park my car in it, but I can feed even my neighbourhood for a year. Most of them are very old with a small pension and so I do feed them for free.
I'm retired by myself and have plenty of time. I also recognized the price goes up for grocery and I can imagine, some poorer ppl can hardly afford propper food...that is sad.

No precortions are taking place within my college no 2 meter distance, no masks no nothing. I've had corona and it's the worst I wouldn't wish it to anyone. I have a difficult time accepting the idea that all governments, both elected and authoritarian, all scientists worldwide and every other person involved in vaccines have come up with a conspiracy to control the masses. The number of people it would take to do that is a bridge too far for me. Questioning the science is common but that's a personal choice.

I don't want to give false hope but there is a vaccine called Covaxin under trials in India that should cover multiple strains and I heard some experts talk about it possibly being the universal vaccine for all strains of covid, it succesfully passed phase 1(not the short phase trials like other vaccines but longer phase trials) and is expected to roll out by January so there is some hope and it does not need to be kept at -70 degrees so...
Let's be honest this 'new' strain is pretty much everywhere already. Its just the UK has some of the most advanced genome sequencing in the world so has been able to detect it.

In my country we have a hard lockdown and even with this 2x amount of people die every day compared to year of statistics. If you open up the country this can be many many times worse.
