In this video I explain all the basic options for ignition for a basic performance or stock engine. There are other options for racing and some other options for high performance. but these are the ones that would suit most DiY stock or performance engines.
FYI I have as much as 10,000 miles on my EMPI modules. on several different cars. all running bosch coils. Plus ones I have sold and the only one that I had problems with was in the camper van which I changed out. After I changed it out I found out that there was a bad connection at the coil which I think was the real problem with it. So basically I have had no problems YET....I am still holding an additional one in the glove box. I have not seen too many problems with the China caps.....BUT the rotors I have seen burn through....All my cars have the bosch rotors on them. too.
I have a 1600dp with dual 40's.. and had a really bad dead-spot.. When I swaped out to the MagnaSpark, it was amazing.. the dead-spot was gone and It felt as if I gained 10 HP. The motor fired up on the first click.. of all the mod's i've done to my motor.. This ranks #1... 2nd mod was electric fuel pump.. Worth every penny!!
Yea I want to upgrade to that on my 2007. as soon as I can.
I have a 72 ghia. Stock 1600. Want an electronic fuel pump. Any recommendations?
Great video Mike! My 64 bug with a 1385cc has a 6V Pertronix Coil, Pertronix 6v Ignition Module & Pertronix vacuum advance distributor. Runs much better than with points.
Really really great tech video. So much good info right here
Hello Mike, another great video my friend. I have just completed testing of ten different samples of condensers from Standard, Empi, Bosch, and an unlabeled supplier that sells 5 condensers for about 14 bucks on eBay. Every condenser came out to .19uF and every one was silver. I really like the 5 for 14 bucks on eBay where you can keep a few in your glovebox or your on the road toolbox. Standard seems to last the longest probably because they have.....standards? I will let you know how long they last. I am using these for my 1970 Porsche as well as my Lincwelder 225 and my Miller Bobcat 225 along with my XS650 bobber. With the way they responded to the testing, I believe all of them should last for a while.I will let you know when the first one fails.
Keep them videos coming🤙🏽
Great info, really nice 👍
Very informative and helpful , thank you.
I don't know how I missed this video but that info is really good to have. I was just thinking about going with a new distributor, i think I'll research the CB performance one. Thanks for the video !!
Hey Mike ! In the early 90s you could get a .009 knockoff with cap rotor and points condenser complete ! for the low cost of 17.50 cents . It would cost 25 to get just the tune up in Bosch parts . Now if you use points NAPA has them in their heavy duty ones that seem to act OK. On .009s every couple of years it's good to check if the swing is still moving they will get dust in them and stick on full swing or not swing .
yea that is true. the biggest issue is not the points.....its the condensers are foul.....Right out of the box. just like the old Cheif auto parts Wells Ampco.....those were bad before you even turned your key. We go no starts coming in almost every day and they would say.....Those are NEW.....and we would say......and they are bad. People could not believe it.
Jimmy, what is the value of the condenser that NAPA uses? I would really like to know if it is .19uf. thank you my friend.
@@Biokemist-o3k I don't know ? the one I have is so old I don't know where it came from .
I've been running the empi accu-fire for 3 months now. I put about 200 miles a week on my baja. So far, I'm a fan but I do keep my old 009 ready to install if it goes bad.
Hey mike great job
Can u link the part number for the pointless ignition system
empi accufire. I cant find a link but you can call car craft store in riverside 951 781 4480 they dont have a link on their website. We should get them to put one on there. they only have the distributor and it is not listed as empi but that is what they sell.
here is the distrubutor at j bugs it is 2 times the price. carcraftstore.com/009typedistributors.aspx
Thank you
I also had a newer Bosh distributor go out in about 80 miles. . Ran fine, but never started again.
Are you using a resistor in the 12 volt feed to the coil?
I have a pertronix that is about 10 years old that still works fine. However, in the last 2 years I bought a new pertronix unit on 2 different occasions, both of them didn’t last a week. Pertronix is hit and miss. I just installed the new Pat Downs performance distributor yesterday and it’s a night and day difference. It seems to run a lot smoother at idle than the 009 with pertronix , timing set exactly the same. I’m hoping the pat downs distributor lasts longer lol
wanted to sample a amazon (white box) compufire copy. 10 miles or so in, it fried. went back to my old 1980's perlux which has 10's of thousands of miles on it.
I am going to try a film capacitor (R75UR32204040J) and will see how it goes. I am going to pot it into a box slightly larger and attach it somehow to the outside of the distributor.
For vacuum advance distributors, my bus has a shorter chubby type,..my ghia’s is a bit taller…r they interchamgeable? And also, the round vacuum canister, 1 has 1 port, the other has 2 ports…
Hey sir, I have a question I’m running a 1679 (88) heads with dual 40s idf genuine webers. I’m getting a good idle with the jets at 55. But it’s bogging down during gear transition. Im running (115) main… do I need to change the main jets. What do you prefer for 1679cc . Any help is appreciated
I am not up on the jet sizes and vent sizes on dual carbs.....David at Volkstroke channel might be able to help on that. WHat I do know on that engine is you do need to have 30 vents or smaller on there to run 40s. those are way too big for an engine that small. It can be done but you need to change the venturi.
Pertronix has a 6v distributor available.
$$$$ and they still dont last. I dont trust them. WW points and condensers are not too bad for the early distributors.
Can you please explain why you wouldn't touch that pinch bolt and how do you adjust it if you did what's its function stuff like that.
If your timing was fine it will still be fine so no need to touch 😊
What's your feedback on using a MSD ignition box, with a stock distributor or aftermarket distributor?
magna spark is better value. to really benefit from msd you need to be on the track.
@Mike Fn Garage
MSD puts out a hotter spark, from what I read. I have both the msd & cb performance magna spark distributor. But I haven't tried them yet. Just wanted to get your feedback.
Empi points replacement finally gave out after 7,000 miles. But I also had a smoking wire on my ignition switch. So that may have been what killed it.
But I really do not see a quality issue with the product.
Saying a component is Chinese is useless information. Sharing the name of the company that sells Chinese crap is useful.
there are no names on the white box. and lots of places sell them. Just remember white box no good.
he did not change the points to electronic..... sigh
Might as well put another car in your glove box.
