- Ukraine shoots down six 'unstoppable' hypersonic missiles as Russia hits Kyiv | Russia launched a brutal drone and missile attack on Ukraine 's capital early this morning, just hours after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said he would be returning from a European tour with a restocked weapons arsenal. Ukraine claimed its robust air defence system, comprised of Soviet-era and Western-supplied platforms, managed to successfully shoot down 18 of Moscow's missiles, six of which were reportedly hypersonic 'Kinzhal' missiles which Vladimir Putin once boasted were 'unstoppable'. But the Russian Defence Ministry in turn claimed one of its missiles had successfully destroyed a US-designed and supplied Patriot air defence system - a feat amounting to the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of state-of-the-art technology that could leave the Ukrainian capital vulnerable to further attacks. The claim is yet to be confirmed, though a grainy security camera video circulating on the Telegram messaging app appears to show the moment a surface-to-air battery explodes after exhausting all of its ammunition amid the attacks.

1) We don´t see anything "shot down", all we see are some explosions in the dark, which could very well be the air defense ammo itself detonating for safety reasons (so that it won´t detonate on the ground again) and btw at the start of the video we see the plume of a strong explosion on the ground, which indicates an actual impact.
2) The claim by Kiev to have shot down Kinzhals is both bold and unsubstantiated. The Americans admit that Patriot can´t shoot down Kinzhal and the debris that Klitschko showed off didn´t neither have the shape nor the dimensions of a Kinshal missile. To shoot down a long range missile with air defense missiles requires the missile to either sub-sonic (like cruise missiles) or ballistic, which means they fly in a predictable arc. Kinshal is not only faster than other attack missiles, but it also keeps unpredictably maneuvering when approaching the target, which creates the difficulty in shooting it down.

Hypersonic missles are easy to shoot down if you are in their path and have a lock of them. You have to remember that high-explosive ordnance doesn't actually hit a target to take it out. It explodes NEAR a target and the shockwave takes out the target. It's a matter of timing more than anything. Hypersonic ordnance is only effective when your oppenent has to chase it down, otherwise it's no more effective than any other type of missile.
