How to Improve Outcomes : Cattleya Orchid Repot Tips // One Month Update on MnS Haul Cattleya

  • Alongside a one month update, we look at considerations I take when repotting Cattleya Orchids:
    1. The media you are transitioning from and to. Must take in to context the you current climate, growing environment and your care schedule
    2. Establishing your root system is more important than catering for the wrong season. If repotting in Summer, consider maintaining optimal hydration & humidity, in Winter consider ensuring the roots don't stay cold and wet. This winter I am keeping my repotted cattleya seedlings indoors, out of direct sun and on heat mats.
    3. You are usually safer opting for a small pot and potting up (with minimal root disturbance) when your new root system is established. Particularly in colder months.
    4. In my opinion, the optimal time to repot your cattleya is when there are signs of multiple fresh root tips AND there is a new growth developing at ~ 2-3cm long. Both do not often occur together, but having one or the other usually increases your chances of success.
    5. The younger the plant, the more sensitive it will be to stress. Also, it will have reduced reserves to cope with the repotting, so ensure the steps above.
    6. Ensure when repotting there are no massive air gaps. Stability is essential when new roots are developing. Stake the plant if needed.'

    Nice video I like seeing your repotted cattleyas! I highly recommend low light as well for cattleya's when they're that size.

      Yes absolutely, the volcano trick has been moved to higher light but the others are on wedding by mats with just a couple LED lamps :)

    I constantly receive orchids packed in tight moss from nurseries which is against much of what we learn as hobbyists. I watched a video on Mt Beenak orchids website were the owner repots a Masdevallia packing the moss as tightly as possible and explains that why people fail with Sphagnum Moss is because loosely packed moss will hold too much water but tightly packed moss can not hold water like the light and fluffy method. I haven’t tried but many nurseries seem to use the method it might favour greenhouses with auto sprayers.

      I do it with my paphs, neos and catasetanae. It’s true the moss dries out fast it you aren’t watching. My area is arid so it works for me. Not sure how well it would work if ambient humidity was higher above 70%

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Yes totally agree.. very tight packing works in a very particular way. It’s true the sphagnum holds less water. But I also think it can be difficult for the home growers to control.. with a sprinkler system and humidity control it also keeps the medium moist but it soggy and for nurseries they can adjust their settings perfectly. But there is naturally variation in the density of some pots compared to others - then super tight as roots fill the pot. And I wonder if it gets to a density point where there is a little bit of ‘start-stop’ of roots (the little black lines on the roots?) . So yes, in my head I can totally see how it would work for nurseries and some growers! Just not for me in winter 😬

      Orchie Dee that’s a thought. Almost as if they are root/pot bound but just stuffed tightly. Stunting their growth. I feel that way about the tight catasetanae moss balls. So compacted. I cut them complexity off and start over.

      @@OrchieDee I cant grow orchids in sphagnum moss in cold melbourne.
      The ones i get from places like orchid species plus i pot in bark as soon as i get them seller doesnt recommend it without allowing them at least 1 month to acclimatise to my conditions but in cold melbourne in winter they will die if i didn't repot them into bark.
      Another thing i dont like about growing in sphagnum moss it makes orchids roots very weak.

    Amazing. Thank you for the tips on potting cattleya orchids. I do agree that you have to take the climate that one lives into consideration and when you are potting. However I am like you that when an orchid whatever type it is needs to be potted again then I just do it. So far none of my orchids have set back. Once again thank you and love watching how your orchids are doing. Have an amazing day/evening.

    As i don’t grow in transparent pots, I use the tug test method, to asses root growth, as well ... I’m with on not being too concerned if old roots die off, knowing that new roots are on the way. Great orchids & wonderful video 🤩 looking forward to seeing them bloom 🌸

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Ohh yes that was a learning curve. Was just too rough with roots as I’d watched so many videos saying remove every last bit of old media (which you need in some cases granted). But aim for more of a case by case method now and plants with good roots simply outgrowing pots, I aim for minimal disturbance and potting up 🤷🏻‍♀️. Still lose some battles though 😝

    oh, that NSA Big China looks like what happened to my L. purpurata 'Carnea', it dumped the entirety of the old root system. I really don't think the plant is going to survive at this point so I just ordered a new one. If it lives, it is going to be really set back anyway. The new, blooming size one I got at a hell of a price so I'm not too put out.
    I also have a major problem with my Cattleya types dumping roots when I repot them. You would think they would appreciate new media but they really seem to object. As an experiment, I bought a purpurata on the cheap that was potted in moss. I took it from the moss and potted in plain small bark, so far so good on the roots not dumping. I also split an Iwan Appleblossom and potted one in medium bark with large perlite and the other in small bark, just to see how they do.

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Laelia purpurata repottings have always been the bane of my existence! But i have 2 now- both repotted in 2018. Have decided will just up-pot these guys when it comes time. That goes for most of my cattleya moving forward I think. Except where I’ve got sphag heavy mixes or lots of dead roots 😬

      @@OrchieDee why are some orchids so friggin fussy? I repotted my small Grammatophyllum, and broke its only new growth off in the process, and did it complain? No. It was like, oooh, more space, let me throw a ton of new roots and here's four more new growths.
      Anyway, I'm also experimenting with pre-wetting the media, versus watering through when I'm done. It is seriously a pain in the rear to pot using pre-wet bark, sticks to everything. But if it works to stop root death on repots, I'll deal with it. Will keep you posted on the results.

    I have one on a mount and I’m just not happy with the roots. They grow vigorously but I think they aren’t happy being so exposed. I just need my pots to arrive 😭

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Yah mounted orchids are such a skill. I think they struggle in low humidity climates (unless you can keep up with their wet dry cycles)... but that’s really just a guess.. no mounts here 😬🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @orchidelirium9102
      @orchidelirium9102 4 роки тому

      Orchie Dee I think it would work if it was mounted on a static object. I move my mounts a lot. Oh goodness a life with no mounts? Lol that’s to easy 😂. I recently potted my vandas in self watering. They are grumpy but I’m pushing through. 🤞🏻
