I got one Westling tray with a set of sockets I bought. Really liked it a lot! I used it for a pattern. The pegs are exactly 1/4 3/8 & 1/2”. ( of course) So I drill the same size hole for a press fit. My favorite base material is Azek decking material. Though anything should work. I planed it down to 1/2” thick. I had some ss bar stock the right diameters. Here’s the neat part. The pegs didn’t have to be precise length. Because I pressed them in all at the same time. So they came out all the same height. I made specialty socket rails for each socket set. No vacant pegs! For my deep well sockets I made the pegs a tiny bit longer. It holds better.
You should give the Ernst socket rails a try. USA made, fairly inexpensive, being all plastic, but they twist lock the sockets on, and are modular. They have trays you can clip the rails into, ratchet holders that can clip on the rails, and all of the holders can fit on any rail if you want to combine different drive sizes onto one rail. Pretty slick stuff, really. The one caveat that I've found is not all sockets like them. I bought a massive set of Husky sockets last Christmas, and a lot of the quarter inch sockets will not lock onto the holders reliably. The socket geometry isn't consistent enough or something. Bummer. Everything else I've tried from Snap On to Proto, SK, some OLD 70s and 80s vintage Ko-Ken 3/8 and 1/2 inch, even harbor freight... Works nice.
Thanks. Someone mentioned those to me a while back. They look look nice, but I do prefer to socket trays that DON’T hold the sockets for my stationary box. If I had to do work with rolling around a box I could see myself going for something like that the earnest setup.
I can see where you're coming from but I'm a earthmoving field mechanic and socket rails are where it's at for us.. All my sockets would end up everywhere on those westling trays while I'm driving around lol Good video tho
24mm does seem pretty rare in a 3/8” socket set, but I do think that they should offer more flexible options for their trays. Their product is excellent but we’re stuck with what they offer.
@@BrandoDamo Yeah even the socket holders I have still send em flying with an occasional hard drop. I’m upgrading my tool bag to a Veto made one soon so I might be more “gentle” in the future haha
nice, ty for the video. I've gone to VIM magrails for all my sockets, but I have a koken rail on orrder that I plan to use for accessories like my koken universals, short koken wobble extensions, and various adapters
I buy them Ko-ken magnetic rails for everything...Only thing is. Their always out of the 1/4" complete rails... So I have to order the rail and clips separate. then build one...
Westling socket rails are what I use, even in my roll around cart. The only problem I have is, if I really jar the cart some of the deeps will come off. Still would say they are the best on the market currently, personal opinion.
You need sockets for your sockets. What I mean is HOLES. If you get a chunk/block of closed cell foam ... you can map out you positioning. Heat the sockets in toaster oven, then place on the foam where you decided to make the socket for your socket.
They call it a universal Torx tray, but it works great for adapters and accessories. Here’s a link westlingmachine.com/collections/universal-socket-trays/products/1-4-3-8-drive-torx-universal
If I have to take sockets with me or work away from the tool box I will put them on one of my Koken rails and take it with me. This is my favorite rail. But for my array of sockets in the box, which I don’t move around, I like these Westling Machine trays much much better. I don’t want sockets retained that I use everyday, I want them “grab-able” just sitting on the tray’s pegs. Also for organizing all my various socket adapters, accessories, etc. these trays are indispensable. In the box Westling Machine, anywhere else Koken. 👍

I like it! Good job!
I mark four sizes on my imperial socket tray to reference from , 9/16” , 3/4” , 15/16” and 1 1/4” .

I'll second the Ernst. They'll probably be your favorite ones if you give them a try

For sure! Yeah, these will just live their lives stationary in the toolbox. :)
It's a mistake not going up to at least 24mm on the westling machine socket holders. I don't know why they don't offer a larger socket holder.

@@BrandoDamo I use my 24mm on a daily basis in the heavy truck world.
@@itsatoolthing6323… which ratchet you use it with?
I prefer Snap-on ratchets.
Very nice
Cool for stationary stuff but I take my tools with me on the go and I dont want to open my bag with my sockets all over the place from the drive
Definitely couldn’t take it in a bag. I use these in a box that never moves.

I love their rails too. They actually only slap their name on them, the rails are Taiwanese made and can be found for sale from other companies.
The nepros rail is ok. Mine is not loose at all. Rather have that then loose sockets rolling around my tool box. Also easy to keep track of. 😜
Did you secure them down in any way?
No, just have them in my socket set metal box.

I only wish they would have maybe custom configurations and custom engraving, but they are great!
Im very surpised at the pricing on those Westling rails. I wasnt expecting a $22 pricetag for the 3/8
They’re made in the USA by a small business. I couldn’t make them for less!
There is a Made In Japan Tool Collector FB group. Please post your videos there.
I’ll look it up!

I have some sheets of black kaizen foam that I haven’t used yet. I keep getting new stuff so I don’t want to commit yet!
why on earth would i melt foam with a oven baked socket yea right
@@Mr.Thermistor7228
Suit yourself. I did it with some hole saws and the arbors. Worked great in closed cell foam.
I cant find where to order or even view the combination ( 3/8- 1/4 ) tray on the Westling site. Can you help? Thanx.

I agree. their rails are not better than sockets itself.
