Pogacar did that to himself when he almost came to a stop, rather than go early. He slowed down so much that he didn’t have the momentum to keep the other two riders behind him in the final sprint. What an incredible finish!
@@dryter Yep. Pog was riding for 2nd at best as soon as he didn't drop MDP on the Paterberg. There was no way he could take the sprint from MVDP, even if Mathieu had led out the sprint from the front. @David Thomas A very exciting race, the best for me this year, Pogacar should be at the podium, second o third place, that's my opinion, he always work very hard

Had vdp in gutter on patterberg he got out and on wheel with guts sprinted with strength overhead view he was losing it 1v1 regardless to mvdp giving up first wheel was tough call but he can't lead mvdp out in sprint damned either way but strongest two should have been on top two steps mvdp followed on all the final climbs as tadej caused selections got gap ,they seem friendly, but from first wheel vdp will regret not just beating pogacar straight up as pogacar raced him on climbs. Tadej has only himself to blame but he was so locked in on racing vdp to line don't think he expected vdp allowing him to get boxed. He said after race " he was the strongest, maybe he needs to sprint more in these races" long season probably poor choice considering how close they seemed at tour. If he's going for green doesn't need to burn bridge with pogacar. Might gladly see that go to someone else as of today I'm sure. Maybe set pace Wout can climb and not Mathieu. Got chopped a bit too not relegation worthy but not what he deserved again he's as much but you saw how he led out Lombardia being better sprinter think he expected same. Just not 4th
Pogacar didn't respect MvdP and paid for it. You can't leave him a 5m gap in the last KM he will take everything you have and finish with a few bikelengths ahead of you.
@@StopTheRot on the contrary he played to win and took the gamble that vdp would sprint earlier and the others wouldn't come back. Sometimes playing to win is too risky and it showed today, he will learn though.
MvdP had the hubris to put power data and heart rate on Strava, again. Hanging on to Pogacar by a knife's edge up Paterberg (650 Watts for a minute, maxed out heart rate at 187bpm), he hit 1400 Watts for three seconds and held more than 1000 Watts for another seven seconds in the sprint to leave everybody in the dust. Beast mode!
A shame Wout had to withdraw, but MVDP rode one hell of a race, digging in to stay with Pogacar on that final climb, and then leading out the sprint for the win. And if Pogacar is upset with anyone, it should be himself, for letting himself get boxed in at the end.
Pogacar had no chance at the end, MVDP was too strong in the sprint. Pogacar would likely never have come around him, even without the other two riders. Brilliant race.

Pogacar was magnificent but MVDP was stronger in the sprint, as he should be. Pogacar knew that his best chance of winning was to drop MVDP on Qude Kwaremot or Paterberg. And he wasn't far from succeding. The way Pogacar rode over the cobbles, wow! He is the first person in a long while I actually think can win all five monuments.
Obviously not ‘in a long while’. I mean, Gilbert has won 4 of the 5 and never managed to win MSR, even though that was arguably the one that suited him best
Pog has no one to blame but himself for that dumb, junior mistake. To allow the chasers to catch you and beat you to the line because you're too stubborn to take a turn at the front is just a stupid mistake. But given how MVDP accelerated from essentially a standstill to catch up to the speed of the chasers and still beat them shows that Pog would have not stood a chance regardless of his mistake. Well done MVDP.
@@ryanallen6443 no question, but to throw away a guaranteed second place because he wanted to play a stupid game of cat and mouse is just dumb and lack of experience.
the other point no one seems to be mentioning is the chasers NEVER GAVE UP. I got lambasted on another channel for criticizing a recent second place finisher for giving up in the sprint... but my point is NEVER QUIT!!!
@@stefankucera3615 he rode 270km faster than a hundred professional cyclists and beat out a tour de France winner and you dare criticize this man's sprint
You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask of that old Lone Ranger and you don't go in front of MVDP with 2 km to go. I know it doesn't rhyme, but is true. He had no chance and what good is a second place for a TDF winner?
Pogacar showed why he is the best again; came in this race and made the so called clasic specialists look like a bunch of amateurs only Mvdp had the strength to stay with him and barelly; when Pog atacked it was mayhem
Pogacar definitely got cut off, and I think it was intentional. Was it illegal? Nope. Turns out the move was smart. Pogacar lost it letting those trailing two back in the race before that, though. They got in his way. MVDP played it well indeed. Great race! Once in a while, you find yourself at the start of an incredible bike season.
I wanted Victor Campenaerts to win, but I figured MVDP would win this one, even if WVA was there. Pogacar is no less a racer, but, as he is right now, Pogacar is not getting away from MVDP in a race like this and he lacks MVDP's sprint. Go MVDP!
The strongest man won. As soon as Picard couldn't break MVDP on the Padeberg, he was going for second at best. He was never going to outsprint the Dutchman. He then tried to be too clever, and the chasers deservedly passed him. The classics in Belgium are full of tough and aggressive riders, and you don't have 20km climbs to shake them off.
Either Pog or MVDP would have been a worthy winner and the other second but a tactical mistake cost Pogacar dearly. In his post race interview MVDP showed sheer class when asked about what happened by saying that in his opinion Pog did the most work in the race and did not deserve 4th but Pog was clearly unused to the very rapidly changing dynamics of a bunch sprint.
It was fascinating to watch Tadej gamble away the podium because he was apparently convinced he could win the race. People used to criticize Mathieu because his tactics weren't always great and he relied too much on his talent/strength. I think Tadej should end up with the same criticism today. He couldn't just outmuscle Mathieu here. Fascinating finale!
Today certainly won the man in condition of the moment in the group, but I don't think he would have won that easy if the belgian idol Van Aert hadn't stopped him from COVID19. Van Der Poel was very clever, playing with a pinch of mischief because he knew he was the fastest even against Pogacar: he waited for Van Baarle and Modouas to come from behind, keeping them behind until the finish line, but for a moment at 200 final meters I thought that Van der Poel applied the theory of: "today I don't win but neither do you!"
First time to see Pogacar make such a big mistake. Am sure there will be lots of tough talks in his camp this week about strategy, support etc. No doubt he was the rider of the day in every move except the one that mattered most. I personally don't think he could beat MVP in a 2-up sprint, but to end up 4th is just crazy. Might as well have pulled up and chatted to the fans at that point! Guaranteed he will go on to crush the TdF now.
Love Tadej but he was beat anyway. I don't think he was complaining because he lost.....only that he was squeezed out & couldn't give his all to the end. Great to see him go for the monuments when TdF winners usually don't go for them so much. Van der Poel is a beast & will be a big threat this season I think. Great season ahead.
🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮 🇸🇮🇸🇮 Tadej Pogačar slept on point and stayed in the wave of 🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱 Mathieu van der Poel waiting for opponents to approach SERIOUS mistake. He should have accelerated at the moment Mathieu van der Poel was stalling, even though he lost and he only got in 4th place, he didn't even go to the podium, the lesson will remain in his head.
Finally, someone to break Pogacar's reign really hard to see someone who dominates all races it makes it boring in all sorts. Hopefully, we have good rivalry here MVDP vs TP couldn't wait for TDF this year🙂
Bad comparison TP is a proven 2 times Tdf champ, MVDP is more like one day stage and classics winner. There're stronger guys who can compete against TP in Grand tours than Mvdp does.

Pogacar either was tired, was in the wrong gear or simply does not have a sprint like the other three guys in the sprint. EIther way he still has the best overall physiology to win the TDF....
Deserved for VDP, he led from the front and didn't wait for Pogacar to come round him. It was ok, till the two from behind came back..maybe pogacar has the better sprint after so many km..but he lost so much speed and momentum when he was boxed. Van der poel sprint was ok but nothing special. He was clear
Pogcar's timing and positioning in the final stretch were off. He was unlucky to put himself in a position where the other two riders blocking his path and could not keep up with the MTB, Cyclocross heavyweight MVDP. Van der Poel's timing was perfect. He waited for the other two to be in the mix and started the sprint. Could have been a beautiful finish for both(TP vs MVDP) protagonists.

Or was Pogacar boxed in by Van der Poel with intent? Because Pogacar DID stay in the wheel when MVDP brought his bike up to speed. Then MVDP had another look, waited about half a second, saw Madouas and Van Baarle coming left and right from him -and Pogacar was only then boxed in. At that moment Van der Poels real sprint started and he won comfortably, while Pogacar had no longer any space to move either left or right.
@@jonoharper4729 Yes, the final straight was very wide, but Pogacar chose to stay in the wheel and play Van der Poel and then Van der Poel played Pogacar. Possibly.

Just once I want somebody to state the obvious "he shows no effect from 250k, he seems to never tire" . Hell, he does a triple cartwheel into a backflip onto the topstep of the podium and GCN, Cyclingdane, LR or anyone else even snicker. You are 100% correct.
@@isitrachelorj3953 it's sad that this is the only way you can think

Pogi made a mistake playing MVDP's game.
Tactical masterclass from MVDP at the final sprint! Waiting long enough so that the others can box in Pogacar. Brilliantly delivered!
Sorry man! But frankly, who reads the comments first?
On mobile it came up even though I hadn't opened the comments. Not your fault - took my frustration at UA-cam showing me comments before I've watched the video out on you! That's my fault. Stupid comment. Have a nice day
Tactical error by TP - as experienced as he his there is always something to learn.

MVDP finish unbelievable. That timing and snap was brilliant.
Taday had his chance as well if he wanted, they were well out in front.
MVDP is back!!!
M.V.Poel again 😇 the Flying dutch! Greetings from Romania 🇷🇴
I only think Milan San Remo will be too difficult for him. My bet is on MVP :)
Obviously not ‘in a long while’. I mean, Gilbert has won 4 of the 5 and never managed to win MSR, even though that was arguably the one that suited him best
@@jordyv5421 Don't think he has the bottle for the decent - not many do...
Pogacar winning Roubaix? I doubt it

Truly MVDP is such a great cyclist. I really wanna be like him.
Well, let him first win a grand tour.
@@mulondokalemera7531 he'll surely win one day my Frnd
Pog has no one to blame but himself for that dumb, junior mistake. To allow the chasers to catch you and beat you to the line because you're too stubborn to take a turn at the front is just a stupid mistake. But given how MVDP accelerated from essentially a standstill to catch up to the speed of the chasers and still beat them shows that Pog would have not stood a chance regardless of his mistake. Well done MVDP.
You have to be prepared to loose to win. Mwdp is the fastest sprinter so pog had to leave it up to him to go.
That was a great sprint by MVDP!
No
@@stefankucera3615 Yes.
@@stefankucera3615 he rode 270km faster than a hundred professional cyclists and beat out a tour de France winner and you dare criticize this man's sprint
a TdF winner could win Ronde! Hard to believe. A true champion, Pogacar!
What a glorious era
You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask of that old Lone Ranger and you don't go in front of MVDP with 2 km to go. I know it doesn't rhyme, but is true. He had no chance and what good is a second place for a TDF winner?
thanks for no spoilers!
This voice tone is so calm, we need some excitement
so true, specially on one of the greatest races!!! this guy should be commentating golf
That was a clever sprint he went full gas for a split second and stopped and then restarted and freaking powerful. Well done MVDP!
Loved seeing Pog get his ass handed to him.
Pogacar showed why he is the best again; came in this race and made the so called clasic specialists look like a bunch of amateurs only Mvdp had the strength to stay with him and barelly; when Pog atacked it was mayhem
MVDP no glove look is so cool
Pogacar definitely got cut off, and I think it was intentional. Was it illegal? Nope. Turns out the move was smart. Pogacar lost it letting those trailing two back in the race before that, though. They got in his way. MVDP played it well indeed. Great race!
Once in a while, you find yourself at the start of an incredible bike season.
This guy should be a golf commentator
GREAT COMMENTARY. Love it
I wanted Victor Campenaerts to win, but I figured MVDP would win this one, even if WVA was there.
Exactly, you're not going to get the deference you get whilst wearing yellow in the TdF.
MVDP has another 3 Tour of Flanders victories left in him, minimum. The Lion of Flanders.
A tirato sempre Pogachar e ha vinto Vanderpol.....questo è il ciclismo.......fantastic
MvdP the champ!!
MVDP is a beast. But I don't see anyone beating Tadej at TdF...he's remarkable.
Pogacar just learnt a valuable lesson about sprinting and positioning.
What a great finale! MVDP certainly earned that win!
YES!!!!! MVP!!!!!
Thank you so much for your video effort, awesome.
Scary isn't it
Love Tadej but he was beat anyway. I don't think he was complaining because he lost.....only that he was squeezed out & couldn't give his all to the end. Great to see him go for the monuments when TdF winners usually don't go for them so much. Van der Poel is a beast & will be a big threat this season I think. Great season ahead.
As I said: Ronde van Vlaanderen the best race in the world. 🇧🇪
F Belgium.
MVDP = beast when it comes to sprinting! Go boy!!
This Pogacar guy is pretty good at the classics he should join the Tour De France or something
He just won two
I've never ever seen a rider, since Merckx, as strong as Pogacar, and he's only 23. Incredible.

Q: what's harder- racing on cobblestones in Belgium, or potholes in the USA?

Well, legend has it that there are still cyclists in potholes waiting to be rescued.
Haha, the only time when potholes get fixed in Belgium is when there's a cycling even taking place.
This is not even a joke btw.
Strong win by MVDP! Too bad for Pogacar but he was out of position when the MVDP sprint started. Lesson learned.
MVDP really dig deep there to stay with Pogacar during the last climb. I believed the race was won there...and I think WVA is the only person who can rival MVDP during those final meters...really a shame to withdraw but still one heck of a race! a win for every cycling fans
MVDP 50000 IQ
At 3:50 , That's me!
Finally someone beat Pogacar
Pogacar got too greedy by refusing to take a turn and paid the price.
Pogacar either was tired, was in the wrong gear or simply does not have a sprint like the other three guys in the sprint. EIther way he still has the best overall physiology to win the TDF....
Someone pay that dude some money!
MVP is a once in a generation rider
Deserved for VDP, he led from the front and didn't wait for Pogacar to come round him. It looks like Pogacar misjudged how fast the other guys were coming up to them, compared to VDP who could look back and see *everyone*. Pog, learn from this and do better next time! The Ronde will be yours if you keep doing everything right :)
Mathieu is not a Pole, he's [Van der Pool].
Pogacar should have gone for a long sprint. Like Asgreen the year before.
Not playing it tactical with MVdP. He's too explosive.
It was ok, till the two from behind came back..maybe pogacar has the better sprint after so many km..but he lost so much speed and momentum when he was boxed. Van der poel sprint was ok but nothing special. He was clear
@@stefankucera3615 In een reguliere sprint had Pogacar ook verloren van Mathieu van der Poel, alleen slechte verliezers willen dit niet waar hebben.
The entitlement Pog diplays is EPIC UNTO ITSELF! CONGRATS TO MVP
Unreal from VDP.
Today TD learned the hard way

@@anplyablboy2766 TP...😂 Sorry
Don't think WVA being in the lineup would have made a difference , MVDP was a worthy winner

Courage to be there,,,
Maybe Pogacar learned something on Sunday: 2nd or 3rd place are always better than 4th. Should've pulled at the end.
Oh, no, Kirby! Will find the highlights somewhere else; this fellow murders cycling races with his droning monotone.

Looking at the finale again it looks like Pogacar did not look back once! No wonder he was swamped....
Looks like Pogacar needs someone to explain the difference between deviating from your line and being boxed in. He was boxed.
Pogacar got greedy
Leclerc vs Verstappen vibes
Or was Pogacar boxed in by Van der Poel with intent? Because Pogacar DID stay in the wheel when MVDP brought his bike up to speed. Then MVDP had another look, waited about half a second, saw Madouas and Van Baarle coming left and right from him -and Pogacar was only then boxed in. At that moment Van der Poels real sprint started and he won comfortably, while Pogacar had no longer any space to move either left or right.
What?
Pogacar was boxed in because the other two were going too fast - that's how they ended up in front of Pogacar.
@@jonoharper4729 TP knew he was beaten when he could'nt shake off MvdP uphill. He was always going to lose the sprint.
@@ianmarsden8568 Yes, those two went too fast... for Pogacar and at that exact moment, but not too fast for Van der Poel.
@@jonoharper4729 Yes, the final straight was very wide, but Pogacar chose to stay in the wheel and play Van der Poel and then Van der Poel played Pogacar. Possibly.
I really hate that "cat and mouse" tactic in the final 1K...if Taddy had just run at his pace, the final gap with the chasers wouldn't have been there and THEN he could have dealt with Van Der Poel. He still may not have had the legs but it would have been remarkable to see...ah well, a lesson for a young rider.
Pogacar should have rode that one out on his terms than playing games with a more explosive rider in Matthieu.
Lack of experience. It maybe experience he never gets.
Nice race , but the best of the rest was not there 😞

If you didn't want to take your turn at pulls, you deserve to finish 4th or farther back.
