Just wanted to say I really appreciate you still covering the original steam deck.
There's a bunch of videos out there with "steam deck" and then the description says its actually the OLED performance.
Really great that you got this out so quickly. Clever how you’re targeting games at the exact times they’re likely to generate interest - free epic games, big updates like FO4, etc etc. Nice.
I was on the lookout for this update, nice eye!
Can’t forget the killer deal that is the fallout franchise bundle. I got mine for $25!
@@Pbdijonnaise It's $171 right now ... unless I'm looking at the wrong price. That $25 instead sounds like a killer deal, wtg!
Honestly Bethesda patching this game and calling it a 'next gen update' is like when Team 17 launched a version of Worms Reloaded called 'Game of the Year Edition'
Worms is the shit though
Just a heads up, you don’t need to use your fingers for the launcher steps, just hold the Steam button and move the trackpad around and the mouse will work fine. if using an alternative controller, press and hold the Xbox button, or PlayStation button or whatever equivalent and move your right joystick around and it will activate the mouse!
oh damn you're a champ!
omg i didnt know that
THANK YOU
They should've added support for modern upscaling tech. Which can be modded in.
I’m so confused by the removal of the launcher… Skyrim is verified and it has one!
Go into settings and under properties, general, launch options and enter
SteamDeck=0 %command%
Then your launcher is back
@@dewinter1411 yeah, he says so multiple times during the video… I meant by default.
They "removed" the launcher from steak deck in Skyrim
@@SUPERMegaGaGaTV2 oh, really?! I didn’t know, it was still there the last time I played it!
@@MBhatesYT if you have the anniversary edition it's not there. Og Skyrim still has it
Goood, i didn't know what to do cause i have the steam deck with the dock and the launcher wasn't there, with only 800p resolution. Always helping Santiago❤
I wonder if you could use the shadowboost mod to get a hard locked 60FPS on the deck(or 90 for the OLED). That mod is the biggest performance gainer ive used on windows
Assuming the mod didn't break from the update 🤔
Try locking the GPU clock to 1600mhz. I noticed in the lower fps area it was only running at 700-1000mhz. For me this made a big difference.
Interesting, I wonder if Valve can find a fix for that FPS counter bug. Might be hard if the engines are replaying old frames...
What settings are worth tweeking to keep fps above 50?
5:36 i found that turning off god rays helps with frame dips
кеп
I start to believe that the new "update" is more focus to the current gen consoles than on PC.
Thanks for the testing Santi
Well better then nothing at least it will be high texture 60fps like the Witcher 3 next gen but I wish they do for the evil within and other titles
But why? Why break the game for PC?
Truth
@@SmittyWJManJensen they may do both but the console maybe need more tinkering and remove all glitches and crashes
Would that be so wrong? PC is always ahead, it wouldn't hurt that for once Consoles get the upper hand.
45 FPS lock is primo for this game with the right settings. Looks great most of the time, may dip to 35-40 at stressful points but not too often.
What settings do you use to get that 45fps most of the time?
Well I guess this video will show whether I pick this up or not.
I entered the Launch Options command, then when I tried to search for any MOD in the game, and when bringing up the on screen keyboard and after closing it the game will also close, so I tried deleting the launch option and that fixed it. Hope tihs helps anyone with the same issue
Thanks for the heads up!
Thank you, just ran into this myself
Thx, bro
Hey , did any of you guys have the creation club option gone ?
I don't know what happened can somebody help?
Am I doing something wrong but I can’t open the initial settings menu 😅
Gracias Santi, tus videos siempre me ayudan antes de probar algun juego en la Deck
I have the steam deck oled, and I believe it runs at 90fps for me. I do have a few things turned down, and I haven't been to every area on my current playthrough ( I just met kellog trying not to give anything away here, haha). I have never felt any choppy game play, and the battery life is pretty good. I am really hoping this update doesn't mess up my game when I download it!!!
Every time I try to use the console command function it automatically crashes the game. What’s could that be about?
I am able to get into the game just fine but anytime I try to open the pause menu it crashes is anybody else having this issue or does anyone know how to fix it?
Do you need to do it every time you launch the game? I noticed it’s saved the text command ? But it doesn’t pop up the notification that it’s on ultra mode?
Only need to do it once, after you get to the settings you want, you can remove the command and skip the launcher
i ordered my 1TB OLED steam deck and im excited to play these games again but portable.
Can you still junk item duplicate in the building part of settlements?
Can confirm yes
They did that launcher thing with Skyrim to when they changed the market place
Common intensive settings on Fallout 4 are God Rays and Shadow Distance. You can fully disable God Rays in the ini, just doing it through settings wont work. And you should set shadow distance to something between 4000-7000. I imagine it would improve the steam deck performance by quite a lot.
While it does help to remove the godrays, doesn't fix the drops outside the city, helps in the wilderness though
Thanks for this I was originally running it in medium when hooked up to a external display. An wanted to change it to low for battery longevity when Playing with it in my hands and couldn't figure out anything after the update to change the graphics see settings because it only lets you do it in the launcher. Even deleted the entire game and redownload it lol.
On oled you need to edit INI file for present internal 0 that fixes the fps stutter
Also I run 720p and use fsr and sharp 3. Looks amazing and runs great
I posted the only working fix as of now because that doesn't work anymore.
I might have missed this but what about loading times? I remember PC having pretty darn long loading times without a mod.
Change a few things to medium to high and it should run between 50-60 on the LCD SD.
has anyone solved the renaming weapons issue on steamdeck? it seems I couldn't find a solution anywhere.
Its def doing 90 fps on the oled, i can def see the difference. Thing is you have to go into the .ini file and disable the vsync and then limit it in the deck limiter....but i do prefer to lock it to 45/90hz and get almost 4 hours battery life instead of full performance.
90fps in the wilderness and inside cells 40 to 60fps in Boston with the new FO4 update on the OLED.
My game won’t even open even after verifying files (after the upgrade )
So they actually made the experience a "tad bit" worse by removing the option of launching the graphics launcher? bruh. I think they could've at least made the effort of porting the options from Fallout 76 to Fallout 4 (runs on the same version of the engine after all) because FO76 has the options in-game, not all of them (TAA can't be disabled via menu) but at least it has most of them.
Agreed
Its not the "exact" same version. Despite its looks, 76 does have lots of added engine-features and backporting features to an older version/game, then ensuring 100% compatibility with every old feature is incredibly expensive when you are not in the middle of development for the old game anymore. It sounds easy on paper but when you're not involved with game dev at all its easy to say "just port the stuff from 76." Could it be done? With enough time and money anything is possible. The truth is they are not going to sell many millions of this game anymore. They have prob reached 80-90% of the game's entire lifetime playerbase already.
@@vickington You aren't wrong about backporting stuff not being easy but if there's an engine where that could be doable without "major hassles", that engine is definitely the Creation Engine with how modular this thing is. In fact, that's apparently what the developers did for the ultrawide support, FO76 got native support for it on a patch but it's extremely bad support because the HUD is all stretched and "coincidentally", FO4 has the same problem with the update we got today promising ultrawide support where HUD elements are all stretched so you still need to use a mod to fix it, just like with FO76.
4 and 76 has different engines

A more robust Fallout 4 OLED workaround
Folk have figured out a .ini file tweak that works around Fallout 4's halved frame rate issue on the OLED deck. I've found this particular bug quite curious, and I've done a bit of a deep dive to understand it.
The ini file tweak works by disabling the game's v-sync, and then relying on the deck's game mode rate limiter to keep the game running at a reasonable frame rate. While this works, it's fairly brittle because the ini file gets overwritten any time you adjust settings in the game. It also runs the game in a mode that it was never designed for, as indicated by the the lack of v-sync settings in the UI.
The bug is rooted in a bit of a hack that the game programmers made, presumably to make the game compatible with high refresh rate displays. That hack interacts with Proton's dxvk library, which is what converts DirectX to Vulkan. For every one render loop the game makes, dxvk renders two frames. This confuses gamescope's frame rate monitor and limiter. To be clear, dxvk and gamescope aren't doing anything wrong. The original hack in the game's code is the problem.
Understanding all this, there's a more elegant workaround.
Create a file named /home/deck/fallout4.conf
Inside that file write:
```
dxgi.syncInterval = 1
```
Then open up Fallout 4's Steam Properties and set the Launch Option to be:
```
DXVK_CONFIG_FILE=/home/deck/fallout4.conf %command%
```
This directly overrides the hack made inside the game's code, making it run just like it does on the LCD deck
Thanks for the heads up!
I dont even have the oled model or even plan on pkaying fallout yet. And i read all of that because i found it interesting. I think im a little fucked.
When you create a file, what type of file?
I sold my LCD steam deck to my manager so I can get the OLED (gonna order one this week I think) so Imma post here and hope I can find this comment again. Cheers.
@@o0junglist0o93 .txt file but name it exactly what it says in the post.
with this method i need to keep using the launcher because for some reason it changes resolution (i’m playing on a 1080 display)
at least on pc i felt that the vsync is working much better now and also i can switch between keyboard and controller without the mods
so that's a plus, but still no fps uncap... being stuck at 60 fps after playing at 140 it kinda sucks, but at least vsync is not that bad anymore,
i still have to get to corvega and boston tho, oh boooy...
loading times are just as bad, which is a joke, just yesterday i was playing with the high fps fix mod and it was instant, now it takes up to 15/20 seconds...
the worst part is, they break the mods that make the game function instead of somehow implementing these mods on the game itself so we don't have to
worry with waiting to update each one.
Just shows what's possible on the Deck when devs put in the time and effort.
bajar los sliders de distancia de assets no mitiga los drops?
Bajarlos a menos de 75% no cambia nada 💀
Whats funny is the command is just telling the game that its not on a steam deck. Definitely not verified.
60 its choppy on my oled but 90fps is like butter?
The "Ultra" texture option is the hi res texture pack right?
Not the high res texture pack, do not install that dlc, it will kill fps
Im on the oled. When i set my display to 60 the frame time is all good ver the place and feels like 30fps. When i set it to 90, the frame time is a mess but feels more like 60. Any way to address this?
No not as of yet. The previous fix is broken.
@@darrenfitzgerald2195 ah I see haha. Thanks for the reply. What was the previous fix out of curiosity?
It doesn’t just feel like half the frame rate, it IS half the frame rate. It only affects OLED steam decks and is a known bug that Bethesda haven’t fixed with this update. There was a fix we could perform but it no longer works after this update. Nice work Bethesda 👌
@@tom_123 fair play to Bethesda they are without a doubt the most incompetent developers to have ever existed 😂
Same issue, if someone finds a fix let me know please 🙏
The OLED is impressive. I play mostly high medium at mostly 90. The update is pretty nice. It really sucks for mods though
What's the FPS like at the default ultra settings? If it's 30FPS I think valve class that as verified playability
Yes, drops into the 30 fps range when in stress points, stays 40-60 most of the time
@@SantiagoSantiagoI guess that's why the launcher has been removed to give the "console" like experience. The casual user will probably be fine with that 30 FPS. But us tinkerers can go into the settings by adding the launcher script
It's not really that the fps counter shows double, it's the game running lower than what's being shown. If you disable Vsync in the .ini for Fallout 4 on the Steam Deck Oled, you finally get the frames you see. For example I locked it to 60 and it felt like 30, I disabled that Vsync and all of a sudden, 60 felt like 60 :) it's just Bethesda things...
How do you do that? Is that the ipref thing set to 0 because I just did that to all the ini files I could find and it doesn’t do anything, everything still feels like half fps?
That fix no longer works though, thanks Bethesda for the update 💀
Oh... that's both sad and expected :( At least I can play it on my PC, made sure to turn off the updates though since I have a lot of mods installed and don't want it to break
I keep reading about this issue but I just enable the "Allow tearing" in the Steamdeck power menu and it works fine IMO.
In my game it says 90fps in the beginning at the town when you start the game but the frametime is crazy jumping up and down lol. Is this right or am I supposed to lock it between 40-60?
I talk about this on 03:16, I would lock it to 60 in that case
just lock the fps...
Did you had audio problems???
So far no audio issues here
Nice review as always!
quick question - do you always have to start FO4 with this command or only once?
and the game kicking me out when I`m trying to write my email address to proceed with mods. Is anybody else has this issue?
Yes, after you choose the settings you can remove the command and start the game without the launcher :)
Somebody told me in the comments that to fix that you need to remove the startup command, that fixes it
@@SantiagoSantiago I see, will try now

The game crashes if i open and close the virtual keyboard now. How on earth is this verified?.
For the keyboard to not crash the game make sure to disable the command to get the launcher back
@@SantiagoSantiago Will try that thanks!, shame this bug exists at all.
how much the size of the file? i'm just 37ish gb and i'm not sure if its already a next gen or what else should i do to update
Ironically, this game plays better on my Steam Deck than it does my PC with a 4070ti. My PC plays this at 144fps and I can't seem to change it down to 60 which really messes with the physics of the game.
Closing the on-screen keyboard still crashes the game. Oh well.
I will be getting on steam deck to play for the first time!

my mods are gone because of the update. cant even run my save game anymore
mine didnt update and im mad about it
Now the waiting game begins.......since none of mods work.....

It’s because the new update I’m pretty sure
Updating on Steam Deck right very now 😁
Hope you enjoy it!
Fuck a verification, Bethesda. I want my mods back
That was fast...
Can confirm the steam deck hits 90fps in most quiet outdoor areas. Drops down to 60 when it gets busy. This is without tinkering graphic settings (all ultra)
Unfortunately it does not run at 90fps even though the overlay says 90, it actually run at 45 with horrible frame pacing
On OLED should I use 60 FPS and 60 Hu mode through the steam overlay,?
SD verified for a worse version, I knew this would happen.
i can’t even launch the game after this update.
7:57 no. Hold down the Steam button and use the trackpad or right stick.
you wanna break your steam button ?
@@johncruelty1Its not an actual "button". It'll be fine, as this is the proper way to invoke the hardware controls. Taking it you skipped the UI infomatic when you first learned how to use your Deck. Thats okay, hold it down for 10 seconds, and you'll see the hardware keymap legend.
@@thatzaliasguy what are you talking about bro, the button that says STEAM is a regular button and holding it too hard can break it
this use to be 50-60 frames with massive frame drops for me. now i get a constant 90 fps its awesome
Bethesda needs to stop making their games deck verified if the only thing they're going to do is remove the launcher. This makes their games unplayable docked and also removes the ability to customise graphics settings that I find annoying.
Finished this on my SD OLED prior to it getting verified. Was locked at 60fps 99.9% of the time. Exceptions were some areas of Diamond City and some larger vistas. This is with medium settings.
Unless you want to save battery or something, please don't lock it at 40fps just to avoid the 0.1% lows.
Did you use High FPS Fix or Load Accelerator mods?
If not, did you disable vsync in the config file?
If not again, then you probably played the game at 30 or less fps the whole time since the OLED Deck doesn't really show the actual fps (halves it) of the game.
So is the 30 fps problem fixed for this game on steam deck now?
So how do I get into the game?? I tried before the show came out, as I’ve never played it. But the world itself looks the exact same and uninteresting. I got it on sale for like $5. I played after like the first mission and just got introduced into base building. To be honest, I’m not a fan of that stuff in games as I’d rather play a game world for me to explore not have to build my own one. I had fun just going around and shooting but the base building I just skipped. But after about like 8-10hrs of gameplay, I kinda got bored of it. Anywhere I went it just looked boring. I do get that it’s supposed to be a wasteland but even New Vegas looked better. That’s the only other fallout game I’ve played and it was pretty fun and interesting. Idk I tried liking it and I do, I don’t think there’s much wrong with the game itself aside from visuals for me. I’m not even expecting crazy graphics I mean the visual appeal
Thanks big dog
Right after the sale ends- DRAT!
Not a coincidence, that's for sure 😂

Honkai Impact 3rd part 2, verified?
This is such a Bethesda update... You know "we did this great thing so we are gonna screw you over in this other way because we didn't think it through 😂
To be absolutely fair, for the console crowd that is testing the waters with the steam deck, vsync on 30 fps target graphics on ultra and people can literally just launch and play the game... That is something. Offering an out of the box 30 fps locked experience that by and large can be kept if plugged in to a 1080p monitor is a big boon to a lot of people.
i get a constant 90 fps on the steam deck oled with ultra settings
if it's constant then that's even more of a proof that it's probably a bug in the way the FPS is displayed. for a constant 90 fps you'd need an overhead of even more than 30+ fps over the lcd and that just sounds black magic
Bad frame timing and so you are probably actually getting 45fps. Set it 60fps and it'll look like 30fps. There was a fix but that's broken now too.
@@darrenfitzgerald2195hmm i thought the new update fixed that now that its steam deck verified
Unfortunately not they actually made it worse because the old fix that required you changing a value in the prefs.ini has now stopped working.
@@darrenfitzgerald2195damn that sucks so basically only console users benefited from this update lol
Verified? This game’s frame rate drops randomly to 1FPS when I play vanilla survival mode, forcing me to quit and lose all progress.
Same at high and pc
Still looks better than the PS5 update haha
Why people don't use FSR is beyond me. This game scales and looks great with it on such a small screen and I can hit 90FPS with the newer update with it
That's not 90fps. That's 45fps with bad frame pacing. Steam overlay will show 90fps but the game is actually running at half of that.
Exactly this! They broke the fix too! So pissed!
So it's exactly the same as before 😂 and nothing changed fps wise for the update to say its verified
About the same as skyrim, somehow

This update did nothing. Bethesda peaked back when Skyrim came out (at least they want to believe so). Now they are piggybacking on Fallout (Prime Video) because they refuse to evolve.
And their updates break mods, including their base game and DLC in different ways. They should have just never allowed modding to begin with so they could actually be forced to improve themselves.
