Whats in common with every song you mentioned and just about every honorable mention? Written by KERRY LIVGREN!! My favorite musician and songwriter of all-time
I just decided to see if Kansas is touring and yippee, I'm going to see them in April for the first time in my life. I've been a fan since the first album but, was never able to see them. I am stoked.
Have always loved Kansas. Also Kerry's solo stuff with AD. Which got me to thinking. Maybe you could do a Best (and also Worst) Solo Albums list sometime.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I really love the "In the Spirit of Things" album. Ghosts & Bells of Saint James are really enjoyable. Great video, love hearing your opinion on things
Can you tell us about your shelves in the background? I have built in bookshelves but my CD's are in a cabinet. Just an idea for a video, storage of the collection.
So easy to tell who wrote what. The "boogie rockers" were written by Steve. The long, majestic prog pieces with the deep lyrics were written by Kerry - one of the greatest musicians and composers of all time. When he left the band, it was never the same. His autobiography, Seeds of Change, tells the story of his musical background and the history of the band. A good read.
I can never do top 10 lists because they're so hard. My favorite song by Kansas however is Closet Chronicles. Some day I'll probably do a top 10. Also the boogie rockers are really REALLY good. I listened to "It Takes A Woman's Love" and "Bringing It Back" the other night when I was having a camp fire with my younger cousin. She's not a rock and metal type of kid, but she didn't seem to mind too much. Lol
@@anthonyferraro9854 Strong track with Jan Hammer, Jeff Beck out in front with their sonic wall of sound! Great fusion album! I like alot of Beck's Truth, Beck-Ola, Rough and Ready,Beck,Bogart& Appice albums content! Star Cycle would be in my top 20!
Great list! Definetly one of the most amazing prog bands of all time. I got to see Kansas open up for Styx in June of 1996. They sounded fantastic. In some ways they outshined Styx for that concert. And believe me, that's not easy to say. I love my Styx. Probably the reason I say that though is because I'm not much for DeYoung's slow songs. It kills the rock mood for a show. My Top Kansas Tracks 6) *Carry On Wayward Son* 5) *Song For America* 4) *Dust In The Wind* 3) *Play The Game Tonight* 2) *Fight Fire With Fire* 1) *Point Of No Return*

Good list You pretty much have most of my favourites in there. LOVE Icarus. Kansas did next to nothing here in the UK but a friend put me on to the Point of Know Return and I loved it. Bought Leftoverture shortly after. I was hooked.
I’m possibly the biggest ‘Wheathead’ in the U.K. Ny second band after Queen, and May and Taylor are huge Kansas fans after touring together in the seventies!

"Cheyenne Anthem" is such a powerful piece - until they get to the instrumental interlude around the mid-point, when it sounds just like a chase scene from a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Not sure what they were thinking there.
Another great Top 10. Always fun to see what turns other people on. Ok, here goes... 10. Sparks of the Tempest 9. Two Cents Worth 8. Journey From Mariabronn 7. No One Together 6. Paradox 5. The Wall 4. Magnum Opus 3. Icarus 2. Point of Know Return 1. Song for America
Saw Kansas at Hotel Luxor in Vegas on my honeymoon in 1998! Good times....Walsh and the boys were fantastic. They opened with Elefante’s “Fight Fire With Fire.”

Closet Chronicles You might be surprised that none of the songs from the debut made it on my list but I do like those song's quite a bit. And if you can tell I like Audio Visions quite a bit. I even threw a wild card in at number 10.
Great selection. I also like the instrumentation in 'No One Together' off Audio Visions. And I love Steve Walsh's solo project Streets album '1st'. Mike Slamer's guitar work was tight.

I first heard about Kansas in April of 1974. I was attending a high school Student Congress event in the Topeka state capitol building. We were on a break and I was standing on the second floor of the rotunda with a friend from Topeka High School. He pointed to the John Steuart Curry mural across the rotunda from us and said, "That'd make a helluva album cover, dontcha think?" Turns out he knew several of the guys in the band and told me the album would be coming out in a couple of months. I was a fan before I even heard them.
@@TresLanes LOL that would have been awesome, but no. My friend went to the same high school as most of the band, but they were several years older. He knew a lot about them, but didn't really know them. My other Kansas connection: I dated a girl from Coffeyville who knew the grandparents of Phil Ehart, Kansas' drummer. They had one of Phil's gold records on their living room wall and were very proud of him. LOL Kansas is a lower-population state. Things like that happen.
That's still really cool. I was turned on to Kansas around '76. My brother had a band and they jammed in our basement. I remember hearing them play Child of Innocence, found out it was on the Masque album and I was hooked from then on.
Kansas: 1. Distant Vision 2. Miracles Out Of Nowhere 3. Hopelessly Human 4. Song For America 5. Journey From Mariabronn 6. Magnum Opus 7. Closet Chronicles 8. Icarus Born on Wings Of Steel 9. The Pinnacle 10. A Glimpse Of Home

Lightnings hand is interesting at #10. Very good live on the Point of Know Return anniversary tour. I didn't really like it until I saw it live on that tour but now I am a fan of it.
The Devil Game never gets any love, that song is one of their hardest rocking songs. Leftoverture is one of those anomalies like BOC's Secret Treaties, there's no lead vocals by it's secondary vocalist (Steinhardt and Dharma) and is considered both group's best album. Monolith is one of those albums that might not have any of your favorite songs but is a great album. I also love the linking songs of Mysteries and Mayhem and The Pinnacle. I always thought they should be played together. Masque is probably my favorite Kansas album when I really consider the songs on the albums. I love Leftoverture and Point, but when I really reach for Kansas on the shelf, it's usually Masque. I think I have overheard the other two in my life and don't listen to them as often. Growing up, they were played to death, especially Point. I'm not a fan of the Elefante era...but I am also not a fan of the Steve Walsh era when his voice changed either. 70's Kansas rules.

@@seaoftranquilityprog It is not my favorite either but if you take out the four songs they did not write (leaving the other eight on) it is a decent album.
Glad to hear S of T likes/enjoys Monolith, it always seems to be disrespected/ignored by other critics/fans, it is a great collection, the songs flow really well( and perhaps Phil Ehart's best work( except for Reason to Be, an acoustic piece)). Thanks, enjoy the site.

Interesting. I'm not a big fan of Kansas, probably because there is too much prog/pomp in what they do. But I own 'Platinum' and 'Monolith'. I used to own 'Leftoverture' on cassette but rarely listened to it. I really like 'Monolith' and it was nice to hear you mention some tracks off that. The humour in 'How My Soul Cries Out To You' is rather endearing. I'd like to see you do a 'Top ten tracks by bands I usually dislike' or one of your 'rants' about great albums/tracks by said bands. That would be fun.
Have to confess I don't know a great deal of Kansas tunage! Over here in the UK they were mainly known for Carry On..even Dust wasn't that big a deal. Wondered about the live album? Would that be a good starting point?
Great place to start-Two for the Show. That will very likely whet your appetite and pull you into the entire 70s Kansas catalogue! Highly recommend that live album. Astonishing.
Two For The Show - 30th Anniversary Remaster. The only two things I do not like is that most of the instrumental section is not played in "Song For America" and that hardly any of "The Pinacle" is played (Mysteries and Mayhem segues into The Pinacle a little bit, then goes into something else).
10. Belexes 9. The Wall 8. Incomudro 7. Cheyenne Anthem 6. Lamplight Symphony 5. Journey from Mariabronn 4. What's on my Mind 3. Song for America 2. Icarus 1. Pinnacle One of my favorite bands ever but they lost me from Elefante onwards.
Love these guys to death. Not sure what my #1 favorite Kansas song is. I'd like to say Song For America, that's a close one. I'll go with that one, for now. Also, there are two songs that I just can't leave off of this list, so there's going to be a tie at No. 10. Other than Song For America, none of these are in order: 1. Song For America 2. Lamplight Symphony 3. The Devil Game 4. Journey From Mariabronn 5. No One Together 6. The Closet Chronicles 7. All The World 8. Point Of Know Return 9. Away From You 10. Child Of Innocence + Angels Have Fallen I guess it's pretty easy to figure out my favorite Kansas album, judging by this list 😁. I love Leftoverture to death, don't misunderstand. I love all the tunes collectively, but when trying to single out the tunes on it, I can't find one to crack my top 10. If we extended this list to 15 or 20, they would surely appear.
My top 10: 1. Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel 2. The Pinnacle 3. The Wall Then, in no particular order: - Journey From Mariabronn - Song for America - Lamplight Symphony - Carry on Wayward Son - Miracles Out of Nowhere - Paradox - Closet Chronicles and my wild card: - Icarus II : as good as anything on the list
(Underrated band in my book) my to 10: 10.Belexes 9.Cheyenne Anthem 8.Journey from Mariabronn 7.Hopelessly Human 6.Lamplight Symphony 5.Magnum Opus 4.Can I tell you 3.The Pinnacle 2.Miracles out of Nowhere 1.The Wall Honorable mentions:Hold On; Lonely Wind; Carry on Wayward Son; On the Other Side; Mysteries and Mayhem; Song for America; Dust in the Wind
1. Incomudro-Hymn to the Atman: Song for America, long title and song, but great 11 minute epic! 2. Song for America: Title track 3. Apercu: debut 4. Sparks of the Tempest: Point of Know Return 5. A Glimpse of Home: Monolith 6. Dust in the Wind: Point of Know Return, love that album and that! 7. Carry on Wayward Son: Leftoverture, overplayed but great 8. The Wall: Leftoverture 9. Child of Innocence: Masque 10. Play the Game Tonight: Vinyl Confessions, great radio song Honorable mentions, magnum opus, miracles of nowhere, point of know return and so many others
I love most of Kansas stuff up until the dreaded 80's came around when bands thought that changing their sound was going to save them little realising the manipulated nature of the machine had no further use for them, not to mention the fickle new generations of potential fans being dumbed down to "the point of know return" to where we're at today.... All that aside I am really enjoying this series Pete..... thanks for creating it.
1. Death of Mother Nature Suite 2. Icarus ( Born On Wings of Steel ) 3. Lightnings Hand 4. Dust in the Wind 5. Something On My Mind 6. Sparks of Tempest 7. On the Other Side 8. Journey to Mariabraum 9. Song For America 10 . Magnum Opus
Journey From Mariabronn would be #1 for me -- I suspect those that are ranking it higher are folks who got on board at the time of the first album. The whole album is great but Journey From Mariabronn was a revelation.
Hard to pick a top ten, but for me it would have to feature: 'Miracles Out of Nowhere' 'Child of Innocence' 'Mysteries and Mayhem' 'Icarus; Borne on Wings of Steel' 'The Pinnacle' 'Sparks of the Tempest'
10 - Point Of Know Return 9 - Song For 🇺🇸 America 8 - *Tie* The Wall & Bringing It Back 7 - Portrait (He Knew) 6 - All I Wanted 5 - Fight Fire With 🔥 Fire 4 - What's On My Mind 3 - Dust In The Wind 2 - Play The Game Tonight 1 - Carry On Wayward Son

Miracles Out of Nowhere 9. Icarus 10. The Spider/Portrait (He Knew) Honorable mention: Cheyenne Anthem

Lol
I only have a couple of Kansas albums. After your video, I'm gonna have to buy some more! How about Jeff Beck top ten songs!
Lawrence Terwilliger Star Cycle
@@anthonyferraro9854 Strong track with Jan Hammer, Jeff Beck out in front with their sonic wall of sound! Great fusion album! I like alot of Beck's Truth, Beck-Ola, Rough and Ready,Beck,Bogart& Appice albums content! Star Cycle would be in my top 20!

No Away From You? That song has some the most satisfying prog change-ups I’ve ever heard, and is a great melodic pop tune I feel.

And, Hopelessly Human
"Cheyenne Anthem" is such a powerful piece - until they get to the instrumental interlude around the mid-point, when it sounds just like a chase scene from a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Not sure what they were thinking there.
I choked hard at that comment!! 😆
I agree, that instrumental section detracts from an otherwise great song
I haven't listened to it yet but that honestly makes that song sound incredible
I LOVE this instrumental! The keyboards are so fun and melodic.
Steve Walsh has described it as sounding like The Simpson's theme tune!
Yeah! Closet Chronicles
Another great Top 10. Always fun to see what turns other people on. Ok, here goes...
10. Sparks of the Tempest
9. Two Cents Worth
8. Journey From Mariabronn
7. No One Together
6. Paradox
5. The Wall
4. Magnum Opus
3. Icarus
2. Point of Know Return
1. Song for America
Saw Kansas at Hotel Luxor in Vegas on my honeymoon in 1998! Good times....Walsh and the boys were fantastic. They opened with Elefante’s “Fight Fire With Fire.”
Kerry Livgren was the most important Song writer of Kansas, he plays the keys and guitar. We wrote all big hits from Kansas, not Walsh or Steinhardt.
10. It Takes A Woman's Love
9. Relentless
8. No Room For A Stranger
7. Away From You
6. What's On My Mind
5. Point of Know Return
4. Opus Insert
3. Portrait (He Knew)

You might be surprised that none of the songs from the debut made it on my list but I do like those song's quite a bit. And if you can tell I like Audio Visions quite a bit. I even threw a wild card in at number 10.
Song For America says it all for me. Such a powerful tune & my eyes well up during it almost every time, dunno why....😎
Great selection. I also like the instrumentation in 'No One Together' off Audio Visions. And I love Steve Walsh's solo project Streets album '1st'. Mike Slamer's guitar work was tight.
Slamer rocks!!
Huge City Boy fan. I always knew Slamer would make it huge. Even better that it was with no.2 vocalist Steve Walsh ex of my no2 band Ksnsas.
Masque is my favorite Kansas album. All the songs are fantastic

The ending you describe at 5:38 of your TOP TEN SCORPIONS list isn't from Evening Wind....it's from Yellow Raven
Wow. Did your friend have an influence on the band picking that image for their debut album?

8. Icarus II
9. On The Other Side
10. The Wall
70's Kansas rules.

great list- they probably could have another 20 songs in the top 10-
wings of steel is also my favorite
Crazy how alike our musical tastes are ...Child and Icarus are my one two also
Nothing from The Spirit of Things? That has a few of my later favorites.
Nope. Not a big fan of that album.

7. Child of Innocence
6. Angels Have Fallen
5. Song For America
4. Closet Chronicles
3. Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel
2. Miracles out of Nowhere
1. Journey From Mariabronn
Absolutely! A GREAT live album that has many of their best tunes on it. Get the recent remaster.
Great place to start-Two for the Show. That will very likely whet your appetite and pull you into the entire 70s Kansas catalogue! Highly recommend that live album. Astonishing.
Yes! In fact the live version of Magnum Opus from Two For The Show is what got me to check them out "beyond the hits".... It blew me away!
Thanks folks, will get onto it!
Two For The Show - 30th Anniversary Remaster. The only two things I do not like is that most of the instrumental section is not played in "Song For America" and that hardly any of "The Pinacle" is played (Mysteries and Mayhem segues into The Pinacle a little bit, then goes into something else).
10. Belexes
9. The Wall
8. Incomudro
7. Cheyenne Anthem
6. Lamplight Symphony
5. Journey from Mariabronn
4. What's on my Mind
3. Song for America
2. Icarus
1. Pinnacle
One of my favorite bands ever but they lost me from Elefante onwards.
Love these guys to death. Not sure what my #1 favorite Kansas song is. I'd like to say Song For America, that's a close one. I'll go with that one, for now. Also, there are two songs that I just can't leave off of this list, so there's going to be a tie at No. 10.
Other than Song For America, none of these are in order:
1. Song For America
2. Lamplight Symphony
3. The Devil Game
4. Journey From Mariabronn
5. No One Together
6. The Closet Chronicles
7. All The World
8. Point Of Know Return
9. Away From You
10. Child Of Innocence + Angels Have Fallen
I guess it's pretty easy to figure out my favorite Kansas album, judging by this list 😁.
I love Leftoverture to death, don't misunderstand. I love all the tunes collectively, but when trying to single out the tunes on it, I can't find one to crack my top 10. If we extended this list to 15 or 20, they would surely appear.
My top 10:
1. Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel
2. The Pinnacle
3. The Wall
Then, in no particular order:
- Journey From Mariabronn
- Song for America
- Lamplight Symphony
- Carry on Wayward Son
- Miracles Out of Nowhere
- Paradox
- Closet Chronicles
and my wild card:
- Icarus II : as good as anything on the list
(Underrated band in my book) my to 10:
10.Belexes
9.Cheyenne Anthem
8.Journey from Mariabronn
7.Hopelessly Human
6.Lamplight Symphony
5.Magnum Opus
4.Can I tell you
3.The Pinnacle
2.Miracles out of Nowhere
1.The Wall
Honorable mentions:Hold On; Lonely Wind; Carry on Wayward Son; On the Other Side; Mysteries and Mayhem; Song for America; Dust in the Wind
1. Incomudro-Hymn to the Atman: Song for America, long title and song, but great 11 minute epic!
2. Song for America: Title track
3. Apercu: debut
4. Sparks of the Tempest: Point of Know Return
5. A Glimpse of Home: Monolith
6. Dust in the Wind: Point of Know Return, love that album and that!
7. Carry on Wayward Son: Leftoverture, overplayed but great
8. The Wall: Leftoverture
9. Child of Innocence: Masque
10. Play the Game Tonight: Vinyl Confessions, great radio song
Honorable mentions, magnum opus, miracles of nowhere, point of know return and so many others
No Dust in The Wind? 🤷🏻♂️
Do really like it...didn't want to just list every song from that album, and I like other tunes much more from Point.
@Scott Leoski 10/4 on Tom Sawyer overplayed!
@Scott Leoski Yeah, hands up anyone who never, ever wants to hear Stairway To Heaven again.
Kinda like No Stairway..
It's still a nice song, but it got WAY overplayed back in the day and even since then.
I WANT TO FIND A MERHANDISE OUTLET TO GET SOME OF THE T-SHIRTS. I LOVE THAT MONOLITH SHIRT YOURE SPORTIN.. THAT S RIGHT , NO ONE SOUNDS LIKE KANSAS.
Nice list. How many albums do you have btw? //Mr. Swede
8,000+
Wow, a few hours of music then?, hehe...... 👍 thx!
1. Death of Mother Nature Suite
2. Icarus ( Born On Wings of Steel )
3. Lightnings Hand
4. Dust in the Wind
5. Something On My Mind
6. Sparks of Tempest
7. On the Other Side
8. Journey to Mariabraum
9. Song For America
10 . Magnum Opus
Journey From Mariabronn would be #1 for me -- I suspect those that are ranking it higher are folks who got on board at the time of the first album. The whole album is great but Journey From Mariabronn was a revelation.
Hard to pick a top ten, but for me it would have to feature:
'Miracles Out of Nowhere'
'Child of Innocence'
'Mysteries and Mayhem'
'Icarus; Borne on Wings of Steel'
'The Pinnacle'
'Sparks of the Tempest'
10 - Point Of Know Return
9 - Song For 🇺🇸 America
8 - *Tie* The Wall & Bringing It Back
7 - Portrait (He Knew)
6 - All I Wanted
5 - Fight Fire With 🔥 Fire
4 - What's On My Mind
3 - Dust In The Wind
2 - Play The Game Tonight
1 - Carry On Wayward Son
1. Incomudro (Hymn to the Atman)
2. Song for America
3. Lamplight Symphony
4. Journey from Mariabronn
5. Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle (Supposed to be one song)
6. All the World
7. Magnum Opus
8. Miracles Out of Nowhere
9. Icarus
10. The Spider/Portrait (He Knew)
Honorable mention: Cheyenne Anthem
I can't rank them but my top ten (of the top of my head) are:
Icarus Born On Wings Of Steel
Angels Have Fallen
Miracles Out of Nowhere
Hopelessly Human
Song For America
Lamplight Symphony
Magnum Opus
The Wall
Curtain Of Iron
Apercu & Death Of Mother Nature
Icarus 2 was a great song
Love the inconspicuous water break.
