I'm Italian and I spent one week to look for a film shop, but nothing. YES, I'm only 17 and I'm doing scientific high scool and I and I don't know anything about filmaking But, when I found your channel I fall in love with filmmaking. YOU ARE THE BAST GUYS!!!!!!
Also something that wasn't noted but should be is that these tungsten lights draw far more power than LEDs. Make sure to measure out how much energy you're drawing and check that its appropriate for the circuit breakers.
They do have a Skillshare course on that one, just grab the link from their website Cinecom.net and you will be good to go for 2 months (you need a Credit card to register though, and they don't take prepaid ones)
Strands are great tungsten lights, I've used them on all levels of Hollywood features and TV frequently. A Ton of indy shoots as well. It'll take LED lighting a lot more fine tuning to get me away from tungsten hot lights. The quality is just better, more reliable, and easier to control.
That's definitely true. Tungsten is just amazing. Everyone's trying to go to LED since they're getting cheaper and are hell of a lot more efficient than tungsten, but we're going to have to wait another 5-10 years or even more for them to have great color rendering without being so expensive. Maybe that won't change, who knows?
It’s true, that is the reason i bought a Leonardo desisti 2k fresnel last year, the thing is it’s so big and heavy that it requires a big car for me to take it on location (because i have a fair amount of gear to take and 1 light isn’t nearly enough) and it’s heavy it also makes the place extremely hot etc, Basically, i am now looking to invest 800€ in a aputure cob 120 markII, way more usable i think ( even if it’s just for the fact that i can actually a softbox without burning the place down on that thing...amazing
Hi .. brothers.. how are you ... My name is prasanth from india and tamilnadu.. and you are from ?? .. i am not missing any video from your channel . You people are doing awesome... Thank you for all tutorial videos
Other good brands for these kind of lights include CCT and selecon. Also make sure you use proper heat resistant gels for these or they can lose their colour very quickly. Also a lot of the plugs that come with these are designed for dimmer packs so they may need replacing. These are still really good lights and great video showcasing them
But these lights consume so much power and would cost a lot on electricity. Life of the bulbs also are shorter than LEDs. Good LEDs may be costly but you could save much on electric bills and the life of LEDs are greater. Plus it's safer to use.
I'm still in team LED. Especially if you are getting started, investing in tungsten doesn't make sense to me. A 300W tungsten is comparable to a 60W LED, and If said LED is bicolor, you're getting way more light at 5600K out of it than out of a tungsten with a CTB slapped on. Then there are things that were or weren't talked about enough in the video like size, weight, power draw, heat, ease of use. Do you want to use a tungsten fresnel as is? Then it's fine, might the best option for the money. Want to make it soft? You'll need a stand with a griphead and a diffuser frame on it, and a few meters of space on top of it. Want to dim it? You can, but you'll need to buy a dimmer, and dimming will shift the CCT. There's a way to dim them with barn doors and a diffuser layer, but you can't control it the way you can with an LED. There's also nets and whatnot, but again, that's extra money, space and inconvenience. For most people LEDs are better in every way. Even budget LEDs like the Amaran 60X have good color rendering and are accurate enough to use in professional work. Of course if you want to work in big productions you need to know everything about everything, especially when it comes to safety and rules of operation. You don't want to be that guy who lights a floppy on fire or hot restrikes an HMI and destroys the globe.
How refreshing. Im a big fan of Fresnel incandescent lights. I bought 5x 2K Ex BBC Lee Strand £250 and 2x 5K Ex BBC Lee Strand ten years ago and many others since. Also purchased yesterday second hand Lowel 3 point lighting kit complete with Tota and 2x Omni-Lights, stands etc etc £100. Shockingly Ive had second camera ops make sarcastic comments about the Lee Strand lights. What he failed to realise that a couple of the 2K were deliberately in shot for a Dragons Den type shoot for Sony BMG, the Strands were perfect as a practical being all black, rather than say Arri or LED lights. Using these as practicals, music videos, is perfect and popular at one time. All the lights are so well made and have and will last for years and have tremendous scope. I know directors that bought cheap Chinese lights, and the just fail. They are a fire and electrical hazard and most went up in smoke. Bin the Chinese bulbs too. In addition I adapted 4 photography soft boxes from 2m to 40cm various shapes with Bowens speed rings that fit over some of the lights above. Ive used LED lights for many productions over the years, but the throw just seems short, multiple shadows, lack of control from spot to wide etc. weird strobing on CMOS cameras. It can be risky and we've been caught out before, so we stuck with Incandescent lamps, they JUST WORK, so essential on a shoot. Just think photometries, if you're a Cinematographer, you'll know what I mean. Also the colour balance on LED lights vary, when they start to fail they are expensive or disposable, not always very robust, still evolving and can become obsolete (out of fashion) as the technology evolves. LEDs have their place. Think of it as WATTS per buck or pound, and ease maintenance. Good spot Jordy
To me I like to view everything as a tool at my disposal. I do not understand this replacement mindset that many have with replacing tungsten with LED. Why not just welcome LED into the family and allow them to do what they're good at and allow tungsten to do what they're good at. Artistically it's freeing to look at all the tools rather than just limiting myself to only one type of course. All have a place within the family of lighting.
Incandescent light is the cheapest lighting you can buy. If you use household wattage's, 50w-250w, you can use clamp on lights and inexpensive zip cord extension cords. A few suggestions. Be careful about power. Incandescent lights consume lots of power. A 1kw light takes a little over 8 amps. You should be using 12-16 gauge extension cords. Look for free incandescent lights on craigslist. They show up as people replace their old lights with LED lights. If you are thinking of making a baking pan light, use a heavier steel baking pan and line it with aluminum foil. His light weight pan was already looking battered right after assembly.
you can take this a step further by using halogen lamps instead. they are better power efficient and wil be vailablee for longer times in the future because tungsten bulbs are being phased out.
Hey, I love your channel but you can’t compare tungsten to leds. The advantages of leds over tungsten are: - they can have a full range of color temperatures and rgb colors, and have a true white - they don’t heat up as easily so aren’t as much afire hazard - they pull 3x less power for up to 5x more luminance The green tint you see on the cheap vs expensive led comparison is mainly due to the CRI level. (Basically above 80cri is decent to good light) I’ve found cheap leds with great quality because they were above 80cri. I love tungsten lights but they don’t have the same use as leds. But yes they are definitely cheaper. All I’m saying is if you’re getting a tungsten to avoid paying for expensive leds you have to keep a few things in mind (your power circuit max output, what’s its use, and how you’re going to handle the heat)
CTBs and CTOs are really not forever :/ They lose color pretty quickly, so it's really not 100% accurate only after few uses. Of course you can still use them but they'll be deteriorating over time.
Hey Guys Maybe make a video on the cheapest practical gear? Specifically video cams, accessories, mics etc It would really help film makers just starting out
bought some of these in 2013 for cheap. but today they`re obsolete. you can get mini LED lights for 25€ with bicolor, or use a "fresnel" LEDs like nanguang. also there are a lot of LED spots from yongnuo and other cheapo manufacturers. the most interesting is: you can run them with rechargeable NPF batteries. those heavy and power drawing monsters are really obsolete these days. also, they produce a shitload of heat, which is very annoying in small rooms.
Great video! When I saw your picture on Instagram, I thought the lights was fake and Photoshoped in 😂 100 Dollar is so cheap for lights. The only problem is that I don't have the space to store the lights and it gets real hot so I don't think it's ideal for my house. It sounds very scary that they can explode aswell. The lights would be perfect for a studio like your's because you have space to use and store them. I will not say that the LED lights to 200 Dollar is that bad as on 1:51 tho. I got a light kit of three for just 500 Dollar and the CRI and TLCI are 97+. Backing paper works great for diffusion, I have used it myself for years. I also use aluminum (for baking) to shape the light. Don''t you have something similar? Is it called cinefoil and it is black and stiffer? I have made a LED light that I use for everything. It's just a work lamp (LED) so THAT is super green. I use aluminum foil around and baking paper in front and use gaffers tape to connect it all together. I use GELs in fornt of that so it works great and are super cheap. The only problem is that it's a pain to build and if someone craches into it, it will be destroyed and you will have to start all over again (my cat has destroyed it many times 😂)
always helpful !! thanks again for another awesome tutorial iam actually in the market for new lights and this just happened to be in my notifications .. its a sign i tell u lol
Paying for the electricity to run a tungsten bulb makes it substantially more expensive in the long run. It also makes it a lot harder to film on location when you have to bring your power source. Buy cheap metal dome light fixtures (the type used in a garage) in the auto section at Walmart and stick in some oversized 5000k LED lightbulb from 2 isles over. Use these until you save enough for proper LED panels.
I felt bad for you with the cable. I remembered back to when I worked in news and how many times I had run a cable while the video end was the same on both end, the audio was Male/Female and how often I'd run the cable only to find out I have the wrong end at the camera.
Hi, I bought two of these but the yokes didn’t come with any adaptors for stands, do you know what kind I need to get them to adapt to a 2.8mm standhead?
OMG... I've been putting my BAND-AID wrong my entire life... Thank you for letting me know how to finally put them on the right way. HAHAHAHAHA. PS. I own the same cheap lights :) LOVE THEM!!!!
Sorry for the late upload guys. The video got stuck at 360p for several hours..

I agree. I knew little about tungsten because my idea is that hot lights are just bad. But cool to learn that super high cri rating 👍🏼

i have a exam next week but IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE THERE IS A NEW VIDEO FROM CINECOM
I know just how you are feeling! Best wishes on your exam, too. Best of both worlds...
This video just saved me $600. I swear to Rick and Morty if you're ever in Portland, Oregon I'll buy you the best beer you'll ever drink.
Cinecom is the best filmmaking channel on youtube
Also make sure you insulate your electrical wires (unlike cinecom) lol as the aluminium try is conductive and 240v will hurt
dude, 200 dollar LED panels have super improved, what year are you talking about in 2014?
Meanwhile the room is filling with a burning light smoke lol.
I was thinking the same thing!
Someone else noticed lol.
DONT do this at home kids.
'poof' up in flames.
its a new tutorial
i was wondering lol
make a short film. Jordi can be a mad scientist.

This is a fabulous video with such practical info. Thanks.
I have been building Gui10 arrays with fresnel fittings and loading them with LED spotlights. You can fit about 12 bulbs into a big fresnel unit.
Love u guys! Awesome video!

_The light case was usually the heaviest case of an ENG camera set._

Luv your videos
Your lighting tutorial doesn't look safe at all. Dont try to do such electricity work at home.

Great video Jordy, although with the amount of smoke around at the end I was getting a bit worried one of your fresnels was on fire!

Hi Cinecom!
Do you need a light board for lights. Like the Dedo light kit
You had me laughing, over and over! A great way to start my day... and learn something, too!

Great job! Now do a video where you buy one of these things and replace the tungsten with an LED light!
where did you get those lights from
Have you PAT tested that baking tray mate

Hi, I bought two of these but the yokes didn’t come with any adaptors for stands, do you know what kind I need to get them to adapt to a 2.8mm standhead?
I know it's just the light hitting the smoke machine smoke, but at the end it looks like Jordy's going to burn the studio down 🤣
Nice video! Jordy make more diy videos. Maybe in cinebattle
Which one system is best for video editing a window or mac .
you guys are awsome
it kinda accidentally explains why hollywood had teal and orange look. because they're mixing color temperature with these tungsten lights
OMG... I've been putting my BAND-AID wrong my entire life... Thank you for letting me know how to finally put them on the right way. HAHAHAHAHA. PS. I own the same cheap lights :) LOVE THEM!!!!
guys please make a video using the diy lights only....I think it'll be really awesome
Thanks bro 🙏🙏
what about powering with a generator, which generator will be able to power four of those. pls reply
I completely disagree about the LEDs. I have some really nice LED panels for about 300 each. It was an awesome investment.
Luv u guys soooooooo much ur vids are soooooooooo cool
I love you guys
what is the name of bg music ?
These lights are also very good if it is very cold in your room. Just turn them on
