Passed my direct to full last week. Just waiting on my candidate number.
    I was a M7 for a few years before.
And I booked my D2F test with 3 weeks to study.
I brought all 3 license manuals, read them and then did all the foundation, intermediate, full and direct to full mocks on the day of my test.
I'm a very active radio user so please remember study time will vary from person to person.

This sounds interesting. I am a retired science teacher so I have a lot of relevant knowledge.

Will Essex Ham be doing a course for the new DA exam like they’ve done with foundation?
I’ve found the foundation exam material invaluable for me getting my foundation license I must say!

We have no plans to offer a Direct-to-Full course. The exam is aimed at those with solid existing knowledge and experience who probably don’t need a course.

The way ham radio is going and rsgb making things hard their won't be many hams in the next 20 years,it will be mostly foundation users.I understand that people need to know about rf and the dangers ect but why so much in electronics, yes back in the day amateurs were building there own stuff but not so much there's days,in my opinion there should of been 2 classes of the full a&b 400 watts a & 200 watts b, not everyone is interested in building of radios ,its like passing a driving test but you having to take and pass a level 3 motor vehicle technical course.

You now have to show basic understanding of how a car engine works (enough to be able to check oil and fluid levels etc.) to be able to pass a driving test. Most of the electronics based questions in the exams are to make sure you won't end up doing something completely stupid rather than to show any level of actual electronics ability.
Similar to putting water in your engines oil cap.

In before the old timers come in moaning about progress and being triggered by the suggestion that the RAE wasn't as hard as they like to tell everyone 🤣🤣

So WHY can't they allow a "direct to intermediate" too? The foundation is something my cat could pass, and for some doesn't give enough power to reach even the local repeater making it almost pointless. You almost have to follow to intermediate to be in a position where they can do anything fun and interesting (and probably before anyone will talk to you if what I've been hearing is true). So why be forced to HAVE to go through a two-step process?

My understanding is that there will be two routes - a route for people who want to progress in stages, and a route for those with a solid pre-existing knowledge who don't need to go through the 3 stages.
Many do indeed find Foundation easy and want to move to Intermediate quickly - the beauty of the online exams is that you can take both exams in very quick succession if you want, so there's a quick option to whizz through Foundation and straight to Intermediate within days if you wish.

The new exams don’t start until January 2023. Currently, there are 3 books, one for each of the 3 levels.
