This stage was an evil one, no rings, one hit deaths, cruel. But fun, took me a fair bit of doing to complete the game on the Master System back in 1991/1992. It was worth every second, it's the Sonic game I remember with the most fond memories.

Learning the glitch to finish this level in like 10 seconds was fun as a kid to show friends. Unless you want all the emeralds then you have to go the other way and it takes more time.

The games programmers should have programmed the brilliant music when sonic is on the ship to play when sonic fights the final boss to complete the game. After the original 8 bit nintendo super mario sountrack, i would say that sounndtrack has got to be the best 8 bit soundtrack ever made! By the way, the final soundtrack for the final boss is crap - thats why i said that music at the start of the final level when sonic is on the ship is the second best 8 bit soundtrack ever made.
What made this zone as hard as it was on the Master System was because the FPS was so low. Screen tearing all over the place, I thought it was to make it harder originally, just crappy hardware trying to run a game optimised for the Mega Drive :P

I thought there were only five chaos emeralds. I thought only the last zone does not have a chaos emerald.
@Love made in Japan It's there. You have to ride those platforms underneath the ship to get it.
Glitch through the chainlink slop by running up it as fast as you can and then jumping so you clip through.
