My friends and I were in the crowd at Marquee NYC (the second show Luke played in this Vlog) and we can confirm that Luke, 100%, successfully spotted the energy! It was our first time seeing you live and we had a great time!
6:32 What the fu*k :D Hay Luke...i wos wondering how to get songs legally without spending to much money. I mean as a dj i cant buy every thing on itunes. Are there alternatives? And how do you geht your songs in high quality. Bc if u rip them from soundcloud or youtube the quality is not good.
So true. I'm 31 and have been listening to you since I was 20. Love the groovy house tracks and throwbacks you play. Can't stand the new edm trap stuff. You're the man Luke!
A part 2 sounds absolutely awesome. Good on you for making this video. Crowd reading is a dying art and we should not just accept that as part of "the evolution of the scene".
just sort it into folders, most convenient is sorting by genre. that way you'll quickly find the tracks you need when you know what genre or mood to play. this is how my genre folder looks: F:. +---Big Room House | \---Classics +---Progressive House | +---Glitch | +---Loop-ish | +---Bassheavy, Dark | +---Uplifting House | +---Uplifting Chill | +---Saw House | \---Old +---Barebones House +---Slow Bounce +---Happy House, Sunshine +---Slow House +---Tropical House +---Trap +---Glitch House +---Future Bass +---Future Bounce +---Hardcore, Hardstyle, Happycore +---Melbourne Bounce +---Famous Songs (Singalong) | \---Old Jams, Classics +Remixes +---Moombathon | +---Positive, Happy, Chill | +---Famous | \---House-ish +---Bass House +---Perc House +---Techno, Goa +---Famous Remixes | +---Trap | +---Bounce, Bass | +---Big Room, Festival | +---Bootleg | +---Future House | +---Low BPM | +---Chill, Deep | +---Future Bass | +---Progressive | +---Sunshine | \---Moombathon +---Hybrid Trap +---Build, Intro +---Rap +---Dubstep, Drumstep, DnB | +---Drumstep | +---New Dubstep | +---Brostep | \---DnB +---Ambient, Acoustic +---Chillout | +---Chill Trap | +---Deep & Chill House | +---Deep House (new) | +---Chill House (new) | \---Deep Future +---Trance +---Future House | +---3 High Energy - Happy | +---1 Low Energy - Happy | +---2 Mid Energy - Happy | +---3 High Energy - Dark | \---2 Mid Energy - Dark +---Trap Hard \---Hard Electro +---Breakbeat House +---Fat Bass House +---High Tempo +---Moombathon \---Growl House
Playing music for the crowd is the most important part. LBL I've seen you multiple times and you have always nailed this. You're so talented, keep doing what you do. Much thanks and praise
watching the time-line of the tracks and know which are those tracks u gonna play (future house 126 bpms, trance 134 bpm, hardstyle 150 bpm, for example)
you made a good point! you can't keep the energy full throttle the whole set. I've described it for years as, you have to keep it like a roller coaster ride. what fun is a roller coaster that just goes straight up or just stays flat. the fun is in the ups and downs and twists and turns. and you spoke on bringing the energy down, which I too have talked about it as, when you come down it only makes that much more fun to come back up again. roller coaster.
Nice to see that people are so into you that they bump into each other in traffic jams! Crowdreading and feeling the energy is vital for a DJ! You explain it in a easy way!
I’ve just started watching your vlogs and am really enjoying them! My favorite part was at the very end when you gave specific examples of what to play for different crowds. Thank you for these!
I have a lot of respect for you and your craft. And the fact that you can have your DJ life and be a dedicated Dad is an inspiration. It shows that you can have a family life while in this industry. Love your videos man, keep doing your dream :) Much respect
I'd love a part 2 to this! A few weeks ago, I was playing a gig, and third of the crowd was loving most of the tracks, but the other two thirds were dying off. Any more advice on reading the crowd and responding is very helpful!
Pre-made files with what you want to play most or the ones that are most banging, based on where you're playing that night could help you figure out what to make it. So if youre playing for 1 hr and each song is 3.5 to 4 mins and youre mostlikely only going to use 2.5 mins of it youd need about 30 to 40 tracks
Love this video it's exactly what I have been wondering how to do!tips were great and I think you should have a part 2 to this topic. You can even share some events where you successfully read the crowd. I will never forget the time I saw you at create in Hollywood. The dance floor was so packed that these 3 guys were about to get into a big fight I remember you saw that then dropped some cumbias mashup and everyone went crazy! It's like they completely forgot about fighting and started jumping together. Most awesome moment ever!!
Great VLOG, reinforced what I thought was right about energy. Hate djs that just go all killer, no filler. The crowd energy needs to be controlled, this makes the drops hit harder and highlights the stand out tracks. Also I like to use bootlegs and remixes to keep different areas of the crowd happy. Obviously to those djs that prerecord their sets then this VLOG will blow your mind!
yes please, a second part would be great! also, something thats always adressed is how to recognize if a crowd does or doesnt like your current music, but if they dont, how can i find something that they enjoy without losing their attention?
Im happy to see that you put my home town in your vlog especially since you murdered the show that night, one that ill never forget. Oh and thank you so much for the encore, hope you come back to slc soon!!
This is something that I struggle with sometimes. I’m learning more and more everyday though. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Luke! It helps a lot :)
Good to see you enjoyed the crowd in Mexico! It's insane to think that you were in my country but I was not there to see you live, I literally have no other DJ I'd like to see live more than you, I will manage to catch you live one day! Greetings Luke!
The best way to develop reading a crowd skills is to play bar/lounge gigs. The patrons there are almost always composed of a mixed crowd. Also because the venue is so intimate, you can see easily if someone is feeling the song or not.
I've been following your blogs and I have learned so much, thanks a lot, I also was there at daydream, finally got the chance to see you play, I'm glad that you enjoyed your experience in Mexico, I hope you come back soon, you are an amazing artist!
Hey man I was wondering if you could make a vlog explaining how you come up with the song choice for your sets. Is it venue style? Audience that your playing to? How do you decide what you are going to play in a set?
Hi Luke,Love watching your VLOG’s giving us so much useful information to improve as DJ’s Just wanted to say thank you! Shoutout all the way from South Africa!🇿🇦
Hey man!! Huge Fan.. It feels great to see no matter how high a person can fly but still, is always there to share even the most basic knowledge to the world.. thanks man! keep inspiring.
Great vlog Luke very inspiring and accurate! Another vlog about preparing playlists so it’s easy and quick to find the next track for the right feeling of energy and style would be a great one. I’d like to see how you do it.
HUGE love from Salt Lake City! Your vlogs are the best, hands down, and my friends and I enjoyed your show in this video alot! Not the first time most of us have seen you either! Thank you for your inspiration!
Thank you for this video Sir Luke! I just started my dj journey here in Japan. It's somewhat difficult to read the crowd because of the taste in music and language barrier. This vlog helped me a bunch. Thanks so much!
Awesome video dude, really liked the tips about maintaining the energy. Would you mind doing tips for how to effectively use energy when writing songs?
depends on the two ends of the transition. some tricks by me: 1) loop song 1 at some point that sounds like it was in a build up, a vocal or something similar, and lay it over the build of song 2 slowed down to song 1s tempo, then linking the 2 tempos together and pitching the tempo up to the original tempo of song 2. the new tempo should be reached when the pause before the drop comes in, there you cut out song 1. this mostly works for increasing tempo, for example going from house (128) to trap (140). 1.1) if you have a song in the original and in a remix (Which is in another genre and/or tempo), you can play the version in your starting tempo, then transition to the second version in the new tempo. it makes it seem even more natural. 2) there are songs that switch tempo in their own boundaries, like going from house to trap or moobathon. they can be used to easily transition between tempos. 3) if you want to go down in tempo, what i usually do is either transition at the brake of the songs and more or less hard cutting to the second song in the new tempo, or using halftime to get down. an example would be to have a trap song at 150 playing, then transitioning into Propaganda by DJ Snake at 75. the crowd wont notice at all if both songs are in a breakbeat, but it can also work with other types.
I fucking hate tracks that change tempo. But yeah, what the other dude said. Bring in track 2 to track 1’s tempo so that the build of both tracks are playing simultaneously. Raise the tempo and then switch drops
hey laidback luke your one of my favourite djs and i just wanted to ask if you could explain this to me or answer some questions for me. 1. what app is best for production, i have fl studio and don't know if that's the best, yet its easy for me to use? 2. im currently starting out to dj and have a numark mixtrack platinum, is that good or not what you'd not normally use at a festival. could you maybe do a video on the best controller to use or if it doesn't make a difference? 3. could you do more like producing videos to help us use the apps you use so we can learn skills from you?, obviously not your secrets but just some tips. 4. when should you be looking at signing to a record label? 5. whats the best way to get your music out and be heard? is it soundcloud, spotify, youtube??
You went to play at my hometown in Puebla, MX! I wish I knew ahead of time that you were playing at Daydream festival!! Always looking forward to your videos!
Would love a vlog dedicated to what you mean by "storytelling." I've heard in your previous vlogs you use that term, as well as from other djs, how they try to tell a "story" with their track selections, but I'm not sure what you all mean by that. Maybe an example of what kinds of tracks/how you organize each performance, or an example of a "story" that you made in one of your previous performances would be nice :)
please keep going with your vids. love the info. I think it's funny how you talk about the commercial crowd, but can you go into further details about like a super low club set night where people just don't react at all / how to bring them up after 3-4 songs did not?
Yeah, I would love an answer to this. I read an interview with a DJ once (I can't remember who), and he was saying how he didn't sleep for 36 hours. Seems like a maaaaaaad life to live.
For God's sake, ever since I found out that Laidback Luke would be present at Daydream Festival, I was dying because that day, I loved your set, from a very small dream to see you and listen to play live, without a doubt the best.
Don't forget to play your own tracks while reading the crowd ;) Safe way to excite the crowd!! People attending your shows looking forward to hear them!
Awesome video I’ve seeing you at EDC this year and enjoyed your set. I’m just like the Mexican crowd we don’t really like to listen to the Mexican music because my family plays it all the time lol but would like to listen to more classics or new songs that you have. I feel like we get a lot of the same songs on the main stage but I would like a different set from you than the other guys playing at the main stage which is trap/dubstep . Something unique, I hope you read this. Take care Luke! Always looking forward to seeing you when you’re in CA, USA
I am 41, and well aware within the dance scene, there are many people that use illegal drugs, XTC, Amphetamines etc. Could you do a video that helps users with diet, psychological "protection" such as 5-HTP etc. Luke you are an intelligent, positive guy, I think you would help that percentage of your audience that use drugs. I know back in the 90s, if I saw a video like this it would help me. Keep up the awesome videos you produce. I get your notification and am excited to watch your video :)
Miguel Oro thanks for the comment. I was asking Luke on behalf of some of his viewers. Luke is a good man and helping his audience is something he already does. Rave safely ;)
This Channel is about music. Not drug taking. If you want to learn about that go to Psyched Substances channel, he's got tonnes of information regarding safety.
Thank you for your comment, I personally don't need to learn about it, I learnt enough the hard way. My comment is just being realistic, in the dance scene, drugs are a part of it for many. Luke is very influential, intelligent, straight talking, and an honest, man making a video would help many people.
Congratulations on your success! One can only dream of the life... It watch you brag about it. People watching informational videos like to stay in point. Don't change the topic before you explain the current
Safe to say there's still real djs out there. I had work in so many festivals in Latin America and djs coming with "new music" is just native music here
My friends and I were in the crowd at Marquee NYC (the second show Luke played in this Vlog) and we can confirm that Luke, 100%, successfully spotted the energy! It was our first time seeing you live and we had a great time!

6:32 I absolutely love how she hit the car
A part 2 sounds absolutely awesome. Good on you for making this video. Crowd reading is a dying art and we should not just accept that as part of "the evolution of the scene".

As @brusuro said - "nice folder specifications". Thank you so, so much!!!
gives a good idea how to make a music folder tx 👍
Playing music for the crowd is the most important part. LBL I've seen you multiple times and you have always nailed this. You're so talented, keep doing what you do. Much thanks and praise
Laidback Luke: Fender Bender creator. Hahaha 6:31
Video about Tips & Tricks to beat matching by ear, and not watching the bpms!!!
yeah, thats the thing i most struggle with
to be honest adjust the cue mix to your liking. so you can hear both songs . its really usefull
watching the time-line of the tracks and know which are those tracks u gonna play (future house 126 bpms, trance 134 bpm, hardstyle 150 bpm, for example)
Sobrini check out dj tutor ellaskins channel
giannis krok yeah, but it is hard to say when the bpm is good, while trying to keep them matched
you made a good point! you can't keep the energy full throttle the whole set.

I’ve just started watching your vlogs and am really enjoying them! My favorite part was at the very end when you gave specific examples of what to play for different crowds. Thank you for these!
Thank you sooo much for the jewels given ,it makes me even more excited to step back out and get back into the mix.
I have a lot of respect for you and your craft. And the fact that you can have your DJ life and be a dedicated Dad is an inspiration. It shows that you can have a family life while in this industry. Love your videos man, keep doing your dream :) Much respect

6:34 this crowd is smashing it
Hey Luke how do you organise all those 3500 Tracks to quickly find what you need during a show (by genre, bpm, release?)
Really good question !
I'd arrange by energy, feeling and key
Pre-made files with what you want to play most or the ones that are most banging, based on where you're playing that night could help you figure out what to make it. So if youre playing for 1 hr and each song is 3.5 to 4 mins and youre mostlikely only going to use 2.5 mins of it youd need about 30 to 40 tracks
Ahah, everybody wnts to know🤷🏻♂️😜😄

I love Luke's videos gives good info and great music at the same time
This is something that I struggle with sometimes. I’m learning more and more everyday though. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Luke! It helps a lot :)
lol what happened at 6:32 ?
Not only is it a pleasure to watch these Vlogs but also so useful and informative! Thanks keep em coming 🙏🏻
Good to see you enjoyed the crowd in Mexico! It's insane to think that you were in my country but I was not there to see you live, I literally have no other DJ I'd like to see live more than you, I will manage to catch you live one day!
Greetings Luke!
Crowd reading has kept me going for two decades now! I love my style but.. I adapt to the crowd because you have to!!!
06:32 you saw that right 😂😂
The best way to develop reading a crowd skills is to play bar/lounge gigs. The patrons there are almost always composed of a mixed crowd. Also because the venue is so intimate, you can see easily if someone is feeling the song or not.

Already hyped for part 2, amazing stuff, learned a lot in the vlog
Luke is one of the realest.
L's up, Rave Safely, and SALUTE.
Hey man I was wondering if you could make a vlog explaining how you come up with the song choice for your sets. Is it venue style? Audience that your playing to? How do you decide what you are going to play in a set?
Hi Luke,Love watching your VLOG’s giving us so much useful information to improve as DJ’s
Just wanted to say thank you!
Shoutout all the way from South Africa!🇿🇦
I DJ different crowds all the time and would LOVE a part 2 to this!
Hey man!!
I’d like to see how you do it.
love these old vlogs
What a guy! Touring and teaching us at the same time 👏🏻 salute sir!
HUGE love from Salt Lake City! Your vlogs are the best, hands down, and my friends and I enjoyed your show in this video alot! Not the first time most of us have seen you either! Thank you for your inspiration!
good advice here, never find any difficulty while playing although I imagine I would do if it was outside my home country
I had a blast opening for you in Salt Lake City! Utah loves their bass music and you killed it!
Tips for changing genres successfully during a set?
depends on the two ends of the transition. some tricks by me:
1) loop song 1 at some point that sounds like it was in a build up, a vocal or something similar, and lay it over the build of song 2 slowed down to song 1s tempo, then linking the 2 tempos together and pitching the tempo up to the original tempo of song 2. the new tempo should be reached when the pause before the drop comes in, there you cut out song 1. this mostly works for increasing tempo, for example going from house (128) to trap (140).

He did a vlog on this already
he's covered that actually. watch some of his older vids
Please make a part 2 of this and thanks for such a nice video it was worth watching 😊
This video is awesome and will definitely help with some future shows, thanks luke
hey laidback luke
your one of my favourite djs and i just wanted to ask if you could explain this to me or answer some questions for me.
1. what app is best for production, i have fl studio and don't know if that's the best, yet its easy for me to use?
2. im currently starting out to dj and have a numark mixtrack platinum, is that good or not what you'd not normally use at a festival. could you maybe do a video on the best controller to use or if it doesn't make a difference?
3. could you do more like producing videos to help us use the apps you use so we can learn skills from you?, obviously not your secrets but just some tips.
4. when should you be looking at signing to a record label?
5. whats the best way to get your music out and be heard? is it soundcloud, spotify, youtube??
You went to play at my hometown in Puebla, MX! I wish I knew ahead of time that you were playing at Daydream festival!! Always looking forward to your videos!
Would love a vlog dedicated to what you mean by "storytelling." I've heard in your previous vlogs you use that term, as well as from other djs, how they try to tell a "story" with their track selections, but I'm not sure what you all mean by that. 7:41 Nice shirt ! Dope Hat! Cool Gold Lamp
Your best video yet for DJs, you bring a global perspective only a high end DJ can provide. I would subscribe again if i could.
please keep going with your vids. love the info.
I think it's funny how you talk about the commercial crowd, but can you go into further details about like a super low club set night where people just don't react at all / how to bring them up after 3-4 songs did not?
Another crowd-reading vlog please, that has been absolutely helpful :D Thank you very much ;)
what it feels like to fly around and live between all timezones?
username taken Very good question i would like an answer from him on this
Yeah, I would love an answer to this. I read an interview with a DJ once (I can't remember who), and he was saying how he didn't sleep for 36 hours. Seems like a maaaaaaad life to live.
Benjamin Clark I guess it helps beeing sponsored by redbull then 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
That's crazy about Brazil... I'd of never of guessed that. Spot on about the UK.
Great vlog topic Luke and you re absolutely right; you can only be as good as your arsenal! Thanks for sharing!
Can't wait for the 2017 year mix!!!
Interesting statement about the Rio crowd. Although Baile funk is huge in Rio right now and much of Brasil.. that's somewhat tribal.
i like how you talk about music and your crowd. you really love your hobby-ish job. :) Hope to see you in May at Emporium.
For God's sake, ever since I found out that Laidback Luke would be present at Daydream Festival, I was dying because that day, I loved your set, from a very small dream to see you and listen to play live, without a doubt the best.
Awesome! Can't wait for part II
Don't forget to play your own tracks while reading the crowd ;)
Safe way to excite the crowd!!

Another 'In my mind' video would be good, great video Luke😊
6:31 that car crash !o! Hey Luke! Did you have got car crashes in your life ?
Dude I actually laughed when you guys were driving and that accident legit happened right next to you guys hahaha
:Leon :Edwards I don’t think Luke is the guy to ask about that. He’s a DJ not a nutritionist. Try Reddit :)
Miguel Oro thanks for the comment. I was asking Luke on behalf of some of his viewers. Luke is a good man and helping his audience is something he already does. Rave safely ;)
i want to know what he thinks about illegal drugs in the EDM scene.

Please make that Vlog about problems you can get into while reading the crowd and how to solve them! Would be really helpful. :)
Lol at the lady that crashed! 😂 Can’t wait for the second part of this Vlog!
You didn't include your signature "dj and producer, kung-fu athlete and dedicated Dad" intro! Overall, awesome Vlog. Loving all the videos!
Hey Luke pls. make a video about really necessary Vst Plugins, Sample packs and so on maybe production tricks...🙌
always good, all your videos are gold.
thanks for sharing this.
and for next week, could you talk about beat matching by ear :D
Love these videos specially for the bangers you show us 🔥
Congratulations on your success! One can only dream of the life... It watch you brag about it. People watching informational videos like to stay in point. Don't change the topic before you explain the current
I'm a part of the crowd and i also like lasers, lights, fireworks, confetti, music that makes me dance, music that makes me sleep.
That track by Zatox and Mc Villain though. Straight 🔥🔥🔥
LUKE!? Please tell us about your Strictly Techno Set in LA!? I’m exited, just bought my ticket and can’t wait.
love this vlog, laidback luke the very best
Part 2 for sure, love your knowledge 👌🏻
Safe to say there's still real djs out there. I had work in so many festivals in Latin America and djs coming with "new music" is just native music here
Well done LL. As always good info and a pleasure to hear your Vlogs
Hi Luke. Would be very interesting to hear about the way you do the old school ridding the pitch technique to find the right BPM. Cheers
That car crash at 06:31 lol, good information for DJs.
Thank you LL for your amazing tips.
Thank you sir, you gave us your quality to know what should be in our mind.🤞
For the older crowd ... keep it housey!!! 👍👍👍 Definitely looking forward to part II
We are waiting for the vlog on how to use a demon and how to dj!! Or a tip on how to get into mixmash records :)
Luke you are a true living legend!!
Thanks bro, these were exactly the tips that I needed right now!
"Safe to say" that Laidback Luke is the smartest commercial DJ there is.
Yeah pls do a part 2!!🙏🏻
pls do a video on if you need to know how to play an instrument in order to be a dj or if you need to know the basics about piano?
wtf mc villain and zatox..... strong cameo. DJs really do stick together :)
