TIËSTO switched from Denon back to CDJ’s. Would be interesting to know what he didn’t like about the Denons. Maybe something you can discuss with him in a vlog? :)
But then the question begs, why switch back instead of just staying on Denons? If he switched back it would imply that he does not think the Denons are better (in his opinion at least), and that leads to false advertisement
To be honest, there's only two reasons why. Pioneer can pay him more the Denon brand deal expired and Tiesto reverted to CDJs because he simply prefers CDJs.
DJ Tip: In most programs (Serato for example) you can label your tracks with colours, so just think up a colour code for your library and know the energy of your tracks :)
What a great surprise to see you wearing our T-shirt! It really was the last thing we expected and couldn't believe our eyes when we saw you come up on stage. We had a lot of fun partying to your amazing set at Ile Soniq! Thank you Laidback Luke!
Yoo that was amazing that he wore the shirt 😍 it took me a few seconds to realize he was wearing it, and when it clicked, I literally lost it 😍😍 and by the way your set was amazing, keep up the good work 👌🏻
Hey Laidback Luke! I stopped you at Tomorrowland w2 when you were about to get on the boat and we took a picture! Thank you for stopping and taking time to take a picture with me!
So so so awesome to see that a legend as LL plays at “close to the public clubs” as “massive outdoor events”. And always 100% live so he has control of the crowd.
Organic is they way to dj. Why live in a box called harmonic mixing? Freedom I say! FREE AT LAST FREE AT LAST THANK GOD ALL MIGHY WE ARE FREE AT LAST! So glad you are willing to touch on this subject and why harmonic mixing takes the joy out of playing a killer set. Being able to watch the videos of your sets makes me smile and appreciate the craft. Thanks for keeping the cameras rolling.
In 90's when playing full night sets 10pm-4am, you really needed the knowledge of reading your crowd. Every night was kind of different journey, the hit tunes were the same, but sometimes 30-40 mins rap/r&b between them was the key to blow the dance floor and next evening it might have been techno on the same club....
What Luke is saying makes sense. In the 80's key mixing wasn't a thing and we did what worked for the dance floor. Keep the energy up and turn the floor once in a while and everything will be great.
I like how you are closer to your fans by vlogs, featuring comments and helpful tutorials. It’s like being a youtuber and a dj at the same time. Beautiful style. Keep this up!
Thank you for touching on mixing out of key. so many times i find 2 tracks on the opposite spectrum of keys that work perfectly together. Too many djs organize their music by key and never test out combos out of key. When practicing at home, i find sorting by bpm way more helpful than mixing in key
Luke I just wanted to say that every single one of your videos have inspired me to be a better DJ and finnaly be comfortable enough to get out of the bedroom. I got a time slot this Thursday and I'm super excited to see what happens! Thank you for doing all of this extra work between your already insanely busy schedule! We all seriously appreciate it!
Completely agree with mixing by elements. Takes time, but I tag every track with elements + energy level (e1/e2/e3/e4). Not sure if others do that, but helps me out.
Its so crazy that I am doing all these tips to get better everyday. Ive used a lot of my past career skills to advance my skills through practice and planning. thanks again for the tips!
Loved your strictly techno set here in Toronto the other night amazing opened my mind to various sets I can play as a DJ/ not only as producer. to me DJ first
Thanks for making these videos luke. Ive been djing for over 15 years in my small part of new York but everytime I watch one of your vlogs It gives me inspiration. Thanks agin for doing what u do.
Keeping sets different is so vital. I've listened to people where I hear them once then come back in a year and the set sounds the same. If you sound the same in every set, then what's really keeping people coming back if they've already heard what you're gonna play anyway! Great topic to cover dude. Can't wait to see how those SC5000M's stack up against the standard players.
I use the idea of using similar sounding songs alot, even if not in key. For example today I went from dancing alone by axwell ingrosso to loud about us - kill the beat. Great for changing the genres up a bit!
Luke , Thank you for sharing all this very important points in art of djing . All your tutorial, tips and techniques s highly valuable for me who is just starting that is why i continue supporting all your tracks and labels and share here in philippines . so proud that i choose to be my teacher wishing to see you in person and thank you deeply.
This video was every helpful thanks Luke, and yeah doing the same set every day does get old which is why I took you advice and it's been great thanks again
Crazy to see the way you dj, I’m a producer before being a dj but, that was my state of mind when I start mixing and your vlog confort me in my way of doing it. Thx ☺️🙏
I agree mixing in key is not so important for most genres. Sometimes I mix out of key a little bit, and the mix is a tiny bit off, but it still works better on the dance floor than fumbling around for the perfect track to mix and letting the energy of the existing track die down :D
You are the best and truly an inspiration!!Always giving me hope to cling on when I am on the edge of losing my dream to once become able to make a living out of music.Thank you.
What's the best way to get the first engagement in a club or on a festival? I'm really interested how you got your first job. Probably you can make a tutorial with the best way(s)of getting "out of the bedroom". In your vlog about the "bedroom djs" you didn't mention ways to get first engagements and in my opinion it's the most important point on getting "famous".
I'm a noobie and this helps alot when I download few new songs I started to practice making a set out of them until I learn the music. it's been helpful
Great tutorial, sensei Luke! Can you please share the story of how you got your first professional paid dj gig? Any tips for first dj gigs? I'll of course be applying what you shared in this vlog.
Love the help bud! I really like how so many of the techniques you teach apply to all genres, I wouldn't be spinning techno but the tips are still golden!
Can you please do a VLOG on how you select the gigs you take? I notice that you do a variety of different size of venues and your manager probably deals with it now but how did you select them when you first started out? I love djing and don't like saying no to any gig but obviously I can't do every set that is offered my way.
I absolutely Love your free flowing style.....You inspire djs to be versatile, and technical while being different and above all have fun!!! Love it!!!! Keep it up!!! been a fan since the beggining!!
Great info. I agreed with everything you mention. What do you look for in a song to consider it good for club play or festival over what my sound good to you. Not every song is a club or festival caliber song in my opinion.
I want to share how i vary my sets its kind of the reverse. I search for mash ups and when they sound nice, i research their individual tracks or mixes. And do them individually on my sets. Or sometimes there are great mash ups with common songs example AxB, BxC, CxD.. I research individual remixes on A, B, C, D and interchange them on my sets, some other nights i play the mash ups. So it will be different but stays familiar.
THANK YOU! Your advice is inspiring! I agree with you about reading the crowd and playing the tracks that fits the energy. I love your philosophy, you give the crowd what THEY want, not what you want. It is refreshing and inspiring to see you out there putting the crowd first! Yes, it is our job to please the "customer" and that is not always easy to do. Thank you for showing us how to do that from your perspective! If it works on the big stage then it helps me on the little one :) DJ "magic mike coffee"
Appreciate your insights, music selection and mixing style .. it's organic and gets me moving always! Thanks for the effort you put into your youtube videos for us fans! xD
Massive fan of your vlogs Luke!! I completely agree with what you say on this topic. In the end this is why some of these sets even from underrated producers are memoriable. Keep them up and I'm looking forward to the next vlog. Respect - MEDCO ✌✌
Hi Luke. I am loving your tips that you give out. What track did you play 38 minutes in to your Peruckaville set? The track had a progressive house feel to it. It also couldn’t be tagged by Shazam.
Which is track played on 1:15 its super amazing that left me with a goosebumps. BTW loved the t-shirt @laidbackluke your on 8:50 #no_pre_recorded_sets.
Maybe i'll have my first set in a beach party club in Tunisia and i don't have a precise choice of tracks, its hard to take decisions.. what would you do in this case "L" ?
It's a great thing to hear about varying your set in such different and exciting ways from a DJ like you Luke, you really keep a lot of people passionate about DJing and producing as well (including me) and with tips like this we really can have a lot more fun behind the decks mixing and making other people (the crowd for example) happy as well thank you so much for this. Question: Do you think as a producer is OK to stay with the new ganres that are popular now but with your own sound or to stay at your own ganre but experimenting with other sounds?
What about us residents that do 5 hr sets every Friday and Saturday, same venue, many many years!!! 10+ my current residency... It gets hard! We've already done the best combos, perfect flow!!!
We have to do bad transitions simply because we've already done the best ones. Even if we play a good 20% brand new music, never played it before. It's not like we can switch the energy and play the banging tunes early doors.
Back in the day, it was easy to fall into a rut due to the limited number of records you could have in a club. You may only have storage for 200 pieces. I'd buy or get new music from my record pool weekly and mix it into my sets. With digital, there is so much content out there (good and bad) there is no excuse to play the same thing night after night if you don't want to. If you are lucky enough to have a varied crowd like I did for much of my career, read them and take your cues from what they do. Some days you just have to mix it up. Say screw it and have some fun.
TIËSTO switched from Denon back to CDJ’s. Would be interesting to know what he didn’t like about the Denons. Maybe something you can discuss with him in a vlog? :)
Joren I think he was getting payed by denon and his deal ran out. so he switched back.
But then the question begs, why switch back instead of just staying on Denons? If he switched back it would imply that he does not think the Denons are better (in his opinion at least), and that leads to false advertisement
Because it causes extra chew for the events. And, there's nothing really special about them.
To be honest, there's only two reasons why. Pioneer can pay him more the Denon brand deal expired and Tiesto reverted to CDJs because he simply prefers CDJs.
I think you will find "Denon" didnt renew his deal, he didnt have anything to do with it.
DJ Tip: In most programs (Serato for example) you can label your tracks with colours, so just think up a colour code for your library and know the energy of your tracks :)

still can't believe he wore the shirt 😍

Completely agree with the key mixing, it's so much better if it keeps the energy going, as long as it fits
In 90's when playing full night sets 10pm-4am, you really needed the knowledge of reading your crowd. ive seen u repeat heartbreaker vs babylon combo like 3-4 types. Still blew my mind each time.
Great tips as always, as soon as you learn to read a crowd playing live becomes more fun than you could ever imagine.
Thank you for telling me keys aren’t as important as energy, that’s been something I’ve been trying to overcome in my practice mixes!

Would've loved to see you at Ilesoniq Montreal! Question though: how do you actually mix using small earphones? Never seen any DJ doing so?
Thank you for these awesome tips and for visiting my city (Chicago)!
I hope that you liked your show in Montreal, because I was in the crownd and the show was insane !
I was at ile soniq and newspeak! Absolutely loved it!!
Thank you Luke for the amazing tips and tricks. Definitely love hearing and learning from you

Variation is one thing I see lots of DJs lacking! Great advice
Why there is no Kelis name on your brand new Milkshake (Better Than Yours)?
Great info. I agreed with everything you mention. What do you look for in a song to consider it good for club play or festival over what my sound good to you. Not every song is a club or festival caliber song in my opinion.

you were in Chicago and I didn't know :( and at Sound bar! They're supposed to update me on FB and they didn't. Totally would have gone.
Hi Luke. I am loving your tips that you give out. What track did you play 38 minutes in to your Peruckaville set? The track had a progressive house feel to it. It also couldn’t be tagged by Shazam.
@Luke,Track @1:14 during intro is that Shut up and Dance ,The Green Man sample?
It's called Audiographic Memory. Once again a great vlog. Keep them LL's up.
I love your black white t-shirt. Where can I buy that?
Your set at ilesoniq was lit!!!!👆🤙

Chicago ❤️
Luke has the music i like !!
I've waited for that video so long 😍🔥🔥
Where can we get some Laidback Luke merch?
How do you listen to the crowd when you have earbuds in the whole time?
Hey Luke , Great Video. When you finish making a track do you get straight on to a next track or take a brake , a week , a month or More?
Maybe i'll have my first set in a beach party club in Tunisia and i don't have a precise choice of tracks, its hard to take decisions.. what would you do in this case "L" ?
Killed it at Montreal dude!!

Was your song milkshake inspired from the song drum - by loud about us
Thumbs up for in my mind videos while producing! Also, what do you think about sticking to a strict genre?
I see mustache coming back
Hey, Luke, how do you vary your songs when you have different age level of crowd (old and young)?
it's really helpful vlog 🙏🙏🙏
Whoaw! Just in time for me as a beginner DJ. Got so much L for Learning out of this vlog. Thank you idol!
That keanu Silva remix is 🔥🔥🔥
We were throwin up the L's HARD in Chicago!!! Thanks for the epic night LL!!!!
What about us residents that do 5 hr sets every Friday and Saturday, same venue, many many years!!! 10+ my current residency... It gets hard! We've already done the best combos, perfect flow!!!
I was thinking this too! You're kinda limited with top40s/throwbacks and Remixes.
We have to do bad transitions simply because we've already done the best ones. Even if we play a good 20% brand new music, never played it before. It's not like we can switch the energy and play the banging tunes early doors.
