  • The censored, restored, and expanded text -- three books in one, really -- of an essential story of WWII, the Holocaust, and Ukraine.
I was originally going to discuss this book in the light of my channel's overall approach, but I opted to just talk about it on its own terms, so as not to dilute it.

Thank you for reviewing this book. I am going to search it out. I find it fascinating how he got the book out of the country when he defected, and to hear the structure of the book with all three versions sounds amazing!

I'm glad you chose to speak of the book in itself. This sounds like a vital work, and one I hadn't heard of before. You summarized it perfectly. Thank you!

I also created, after some further thought, a follow-up video where I try to tie the things I gleaned from the book back into my channel's concerns. But I did want a video for just the book alone. (I may do this more often, it really paid off.)

I really liked the meta-textual quality that you describe here. It makes the book almost accidentally postmodern.

I was tempted to say that, too, but the design of the book doesn't stem from the author's cleverness; it's a product of the way it was rescued from destruction by the censors. It's one of the best examples I can think of for an aesthetic by necessity.

There is a wonderful novel about Babi Yar, entitled “The White Hotel,” one of the most moving books that I have ever read.

I read it in college - it's been quite some time so I remember it only distantly. I might seek it out again based on your mention!

i read this book when i was maybe 10 -- 12 years old, back in the early 70s. the events that took place at babi yar horrified me and set me on a lifelong path of trying to learn about the german people, the nazis, and the events of WW II and the holocaust. knowing as much as i do today leaves me shaking my head when i see people either professing real nazi beliefs or even just playing as nazi wannabes. they don't understand what they are screwing around with. free speech is great, but there is a solid case to be made for zero tolerance for a nazi rebirth.
