Transcending Influences #1: Blade Runner
Science fiction and fantasy creators can run down long lists of the things that influenced their work. In this video, I talk about the first of many such major influences on my own work: Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?", later adapted as the film "Blade Runner". And a major part of my relationship with these works was learning how to transcend their influences over me.
(Note: This video is a little longer than usual, but I think it's for a good reason.)

Philosophy (Four Topics For SF&F Research #2)
Переглядів 322День тому
Don't be intimidated by the word "philosophy"! At its heart, it's just the search for the truth, and all the different forms that search can take. In this video I explore why studying philosophy even as just a quick historical overview can add new dimensions and insights to science fiction and fantasy creations. Stephen Downes's guide to logical fallacies: www.fallacies.ca/ A.C. Grayling's "The...
I Got "The Matrix" Wrong - And That Inspired One of My Novels

Before I ever saw THE MATRIX, I had theories about it - and those (dead wrong!) theories ended up becoming the inspiration for my novel ALWAYS OUTNUMBERED, NEVER OUTGUNNED. Here's how that all went down. Economics (Four Topics For SF&F Research #1)
Переглядів 9221 день тому
Economics touches everything we do and every aspect of how we live, but it's often invisible to us, and we rarely understand it well. That also makes it hard to use as a worldbuilding element, but your fictional worlds will benefit enormously from a good understanding of economic theories and practices and you'll have that much more material to build your stories, too, not just your settings! "The Mismeasure of Man": SF&F Lessons from a Failure of Science
Переглядів 183Місяць тому
Stephen Jay Gould's landmark discussion of how the study of human intelligence has been used to justify prejudice and racist conceits remains timely, and has much to offer SF&F authors who want to deal with concepts like the meaning of intelligence, or the way science can be pressed into the service of culturally regressive ideas. Got big things happening in your SF&F work? And want to get right the details about how it might go wrong? We dive into Frederick P. Brooks's landmark work about how throwing more manpower at a project doesn't make it happen faster and what kinds of project management expertise does. This book remains timely decades after it was first written, and has great value whatever kind of "big project" ...
"The True Believer": Eric Hoffer on Mass Movements

Eric Hoffer's mid-20th century work on who joins mass political movements and why was timely in the wake of WWII and Nazism. It's remained timely, as you can imagine. And it has much to offer SF&F writers who want to use mass movements as a story ingredient, whatever the setting. "The Rebel": Albert Camus's Meditation On Resistance
Переглядів 2412 місяці тому
Rebellion, resistance, and revolution are SF&F story staples. One of the great philosophical works of the last century, Albert Camus's "The Rebel", interrogates that subject not just political rebellion but also intellectual, spiritual, and artistic revolt. It's essential reading for SF&F authors seeking food for thought about what role rebellion can play in their work. "The Rebel: An Essay On ...

Norbert Wiener coined the term "cybernetics" in the post-WWII era, but what did that word really mean? Pop-culture critic Chuck Klosterman's "But What If We're Wrong?" offers an astounding amount to think about for SF&F writers - it's a book-length exercise in speculating about how we so often get the future wrong, because we get the present and the past wrong too.
