  • Foiling can be confusing. Like, really confusing some times. When you get into the breakdown of wing sizes, shims, aspect ratio, mast position, etc. there are so many little things that can go wrong and mess with your experience.
    As a new sport, there is limited information on how hydro foil gear actually works. Worse off, there is a lot of misinformation out there that adds to the confusion. In this video, Armie Armstrong and Matt Nuzzo review what goes into the design plan for foils. Armie gets super tech and reveals the ten most important design parameters that he looks at when designing foils... and Nuzzi tries to keep up with the tech.

    This was awesome! Lift is a complex concept to understand. The science is constantly changing and being updated, and I think it’s safe to say we don’t know, even today, 100% how it works (Bernoulli’s equation, Newton’s 3rd law, wing vortices Etc.) But we do know the factors that contribute to lift, and Armie did a great job describing the components that go into making a good hydrofoil for different riding styles. MORE videos like this would be awesome for those of us really interested in the technical aspects of the wings we ride. Thanks again 🤙🏽

    Knowing the 101’s will get you 80% of the way in any field, 98% of people don’t even understand these. Thank you for the breakdown that reveals all the BS that float around.

      @@REALmattnuzzo well, I like that he takes the time to explain. Have you seen any legend in the industry to sit in front of a camera, explaining the technical things? I do not.

    Interesting that when I looked at used foils in one of the FB groups, there were over 25 USED High Aspect foils for sale, and ONLY ONE lower aspect Foil for sale. (A Slingshot Hover Glide 76) Are there 25 times the number of High Aspect foils out there, or are more being sold by their owners for whatever reason? I own the Hover Glide 76, 87 and 99. I use them all for different applications, but mostly the 99 with my Wings. (Ozone Wasps 4M and 6M)

      I'm sure it is a multitude of things. Most of them probably aren't actually high aspect like Armie says in this video. And then the people who did find a real high aspect wing probably realized its steeper learning curve and limited uses and are opting for more functional ones like the Armstrong line provides. Not to say high aspect doesn't have a place like in racing, but most foilers don't need a true "High aspect" wing

      @@REALWatersports I agree. The foils with AR of over 5 must be buggers to turn. And with the inner and outer speed differentials of the wing tips, I'm sure that Tip Stalls in the inner wing tip are a high possibility too. There are some cool videos of people doing dock based foil pumping. Straight lines, no turns. Sailplanes are great for distance and cross country, but you would never see one being used for aerobatics. I LOVE the scientific parts of his videos. My Dad was an engineer and explained things the same way. Most things designed in life are compromises. You don't want a wing too wide and thin, but you don't want a wing too fat and short either. Somewhere in the middle hides perfection. I LOVE the new Armstrong Boards for Wing Foiling. I have my eyes on the 5'11" to use with my current wings and foils. Keep up the great work! Thank you!       @@williamlile3225 Yup it is all about compromise. I am a glider pilot as well and have done aerobatics in what would be a high aspect wing to most aircraft...but not such a high aspect for a glider (though still pretty good). But flying is pretty easy compared to riding a foil and in water small differences in design make a much bigger difference in performance due to density of mediums etc. One of the reasons I liked this video was because it brought up the "what is best for YOU" question, not the more usual but more useless "what is best" - there is no best except for you in one particular situation.

    Water is different than air. Our concepts of High and low aspect have to change to reflect that. Calling a foil 'not' high aspect because it doesn't conform to airplane aspect is ridiculous. If AR10 looks like those skinny blades near the end, then that is high aspect for foiling and can surely be called high aspect in foiling. Failing to recognize that as a designer seems silly. It may all be in a name, but language is used to convey information, lets use it effectively.
    I would love o hear a discussion about the anhedral of foils. Most airplane wings choose slight dihedral, but almost all foils use anhedral......?

      Thanks for the comment Gerry. Agreed that wings in water are different than in air. I think that Armie addressed that and brought his “high aspect” scale for hydro foils down to 8+ AR. My comments about everyone freaking out about high aspect foils was related to beginners being fixated on riding high aspect foils when they didn’t even know how to foil yet. At the end of the day it is all about taking sessions and having fun. 🤙

      @@REALmattnuzzo Yes, he did cove the aspect ratio of things, although I think it would be better to just accept that high aspect for as foil is around 8 or so and not get hung up on whether or not it 'really' is high aspect or not - because for a foil, 8 is apparently 'high', so why can't we just call it that.
      I would like to her a discussion about my second point though - on foil shape as it pertains to anhedral and sweep. Some do more and some less (to varying degrees) but all seem to work OK. Cheers. Thanks for the videos.

      @@gerrys6265 I know your comment was from 5 months back, but it got the wheels turning since I didn't have an answer for this. The best and most condensed info I've found:
      Anhedral slows down the outward flow of water which effectively gives you longer span without the drag of more span.
      It also makes the foil less stable.
      Dihedral makes the foil more stable but encourages spanwise flow outward.

    Good stuff . Need to get more into the mast so carbon v aluminium got told carbon mast is not great for wing dinging aluminium is better but after he talked about dead flex in aluminium masts it has got me thinking as I’m on my 3rd Naish foil 75cm mast wing dinging. So maybe less strength in aluminium mast loaded up wing dinging verses probably more strength in a carbon mast.. ahh 🤯🤷‍♂️ha ha it’s an expensive sport to figure out what works best!! Ha ha

      Coming from a cycling background can tell you that alum is stiff but not “controllable”. With carbon, you can control the lay up, direction of the fibers and the thickness, so that it can be stiff or flexible in the exact spots you want.

      @@tc158 Can carbon mast still handle the load up on a wing foil? Obviously less load on the foil when prone foiling.

    This does very little to explain clearly the subject matter. While the Armstrong expert ? might understand it, he certainly can't communicate it. And by telling the audience that he's amazed we can't understand he's just being arrogant and patronising. Armstrong ?is that who he represents, need to get someone who can actually convey knowledge not just some who knows the subject. Now that surely is not complicated.
