  • We went on a family trip to Raglan, New Zealand in March 2019 where I got to meet up with Armie Armstrong and filmed this interview. I also got to demo the 1200 and 1600 cm2 Armstrong Foils. In this interview we talk about the history of the Armstrong Foils, as well as design, construction and features of the foils and parts. We also talk about SUP Foiling, Prone Surf Foiling, Kite Foiling, Downwind Foiling, doing the Maui to Molokai and Molokai 2 Oahu (M2M and M2O) downwind foil races, downwind foiling tips, the future of foiling and more. This is last week's video where I talk about my first impressions of the 1200 and 1600 foil wings (Armstrong Foil review) and a travel story about our trip to New Zealand:

Great information. I would say mission accomplished Armie. I broke two of the other foils in 6 months. Started looking around and was impressed by the build quality of the armstrong and purchased one. Admittedly, the initial cost stung, but was completely worth it. Breaking my gear is no longer on my worry list. I can stay focused on foiling and having fun. It was a bonus the armstrong rode better than my previous foil and I was able to improve my riding with it. Definitely one of the best foils on the market.

I’ve broken one foil already and I’m on my second. Seriously looking into getting an Armstrong foil next.

Arnie made some very important points regarding the reaction of dissimilar metals and carbon corrosion issues. It seems as though he gained a lot of his knowledge from the boating industry (e.g. Americas Cup Race Yacht design ) and applied those same techniques to his design, hence a foil that you can leave together over the long term without corrosion issues. Most important was the use of titanium instead of aluminum in the fuselage as it does not react with the carbon fiber. The design does come at a significant cost differential over the EasyFoiler and GoFoil products however it may be worth it to those who are in it for the long haul. Bravo to Robert for the excellent interview!

Yes, well said, carbon, aluminum and stainless don’t do well in salt water and require a lot of maintenance. Using titanium is expensive but the best material for longevity.

But not just that aspect, every part of the Armstrong system is to that level, at least 2 years ahead of everything else with this unique combination of being high performance but easy to ride.

great video! i've been using the 1200 since they arrived in maui, +1 tail shim, 70 fuse. best foil i have used by far, really fast, efficient , handles a large wave, high speed and also knee high bumps. regularly connecting multiple waves, really pumps well. I'm riding a 5'2" prone board, i weigh 192lbs. you have done such a good job with this one, thank you Armie.

Great interview! Thanks for sharing. Count me in the Armstrong camp. Super juiced on Armie’s Foils. Can’t wait to get back on the water haha. The attention to detail is insane and proper! Will be a great addition to Blue Planets product line, no doubt.
