- 2021 was unlike any other year in track and field history. From the sprints to middle distance running, to the field events and road racing, this Olympic year provided incredible action for all athletics categories across the spectrum, however, one specific race unquestionably, reigned supreme.

Even though I’m a distance runner, I have to say Karsten’s 400m Hurdles Record. Simply unbelievable

Karsten Warholm deserves to be number one but Rai Benjamin would have topped this list but he did not win that’s how great this race was.
Never thought a stride could be described as hypnotic, but that's exactly what Gidey's stride is. She has beautiful running form, the epitome of distance running technique.

I want to thank you for putting Ryan Crouser’s shot put record as #3. Shot put is one of the most underrated events in Track and Field, and it definitely needs more recognition
Crouser threw so far that organizers will have to extend the length of the pit! Incredible achievement.

To be fair, it is not under-rated but it is certainly not lauded as much as all of the other field events because, frankly, it is the least spectacular. This, of course, does not make achievements in this event any less commendable.
@Elias Håkansson I can't fully agree with you about comprehending levels of athletic achievement. Over the years, I have often put a mark on the wall to show people just how high 2.45m is or marked out 8.95m or 18.29m on the ground. People are amazed, and often incredulous, and, frankly, so am I still at times because I didn't get anywhere near these marks in my athletic 'career'. The shot is a much less spectacular event and, consequently, 'laymen' are not so interested....but you are right that most will never have picked up a 7.27 kg lump of iron. Anyway, you would need to be a 'pretty fit guy' to come anywhere near any of athletics' records.
It is SO underrated. Spoke to Joachim Olsen (Silver 2004) about it at length and the amount of details that gotta be SPOT ON in those 3 seconds it takes to press the ball in the circle, is mind boggling!
For Warholm’s race, can’t forget how he pulled the entire field along to run insanely fast. A couple of years ago, you’d think 47 low/mid is more than enough to medal and would probably even win. Here, just about the whole field did that or ran faster

@@bravejango12 That would just be fuel for the drive to get faster. Those guys all feed on each other's success. If one gets faster then it makes the rest want to get faster so they can win.
New shoes the record has a huge asterisk on it
new shoes better surface. there are docus about how they improved the surface to be faster. lets see what all of them run on another track first.
I mean obviously shoes can help but when you’re shattering a world record by such a large margin it’s hard to argue against it. Shoes don’t make the runner, it’s the other way around
I can see most of the WR holders in this list improving further, but for Warholm, I mean, it was the perfect race, you can't ask more than a sub 46. It's just mindblowing to see anyone running faster than that in at LEAST 10 years. That's how incredible the record was.
Could realistically last as long as Young’s record and is definitely a greater achievement in comparison
And after that run he said he is going to stop competing in hurdles, and chase a sprint career. Even he understood that this record is basically unbreakable for him.

Believe me when I say you aren’t the only one who jumped out of their seat and started running around their room when they saw a 45 flash on the screen.
As soon as I saw what the number 2 mark was, Gidey's half marathon WR, I knew that this list was accurate.

Seeing Gidey’s HM as number 2 is absolutely no shock. A legendary record that could definitely stand the test of time. Gidey stated prior to her HM that she believed she could run a 1:02:30. Words I had a hard time believing considering it would be her debut. When I was watching the race live, I was jaw dropped after her first 5k. My disbelief continued to grow larger and larger by 10k, 15k, and finally her finish. I firmly believed Gidey’s fastest possible time would be 1:03:30 especially against Yehualaw, an experienced HM runner. While Gidey did not run a 1:02:30, I was still star struck by a 1:02:52. Big words from a debut HM runner, but who knows what Letesenbet Gidey will accomplish as she becomes an expert at that distance.
I'd have to agree that Karsten Warholm deserves this #1 spot, he has almost improved by the world record by a whole second!!
I didn't know the 24 hour run existed. I can't believe that's a healthy event to compete in.

The amount of time taken off some of the records this year was otherworldly
Being able to see some of these records when they were set was awesome. This year has got to be one of the best years for track and field, so many records and some of them just insane.
It's so nice to see that our small (ski)nation, Norway, - also do well in athletics.

Gidey broke Miruts Yifter's 1977 world record time in the half marathon. I don't care about how training, shoes, sponsorship, Etc have changed things. She literally broke a men's World Record that was set within my lifetime. That's astonishing. And even now, it's a literally world-class or at least top National class time among men.
If almaz ayana qnd Tirunesh Dibaba had the wavelights on the track then they would have run much faster
@@waterproof4403 I don’t know about that. Both of their wave lights would be set at the prior world record paces. Ayana at Wang’s pace, and Dibaba at Mereset Defar’s world record. It’s purely a question of how much faster they can go. I don’t particularly agree with wave lights, but I don’t think they make the most insane difference besides pacing the race better.
@@johannsebastianbach1649 I see what you mean. The wavelights are like robotic pacers. No different than kipchoges Lazer vehicle in the INEOS challenge. It's all about tiny margins at that elite level. Gidey is surely an amazingly talented runner but she isn't the GOAT. At least not yet.
@@waterproof4403 4 world records warrants close to GOAT status. She definitely needs more experience and global titles, but she’s a very good athlete.
She also beat what was the 1992 women's 10,000 track record..... twice without stopping.
Was scrolling through my camera roll earlier and saw a picture taken at 4am that was saved where my jaw was wide open hitting the floor. I didn’t even hesitate to say what it was and I know I will never forget that night where Warholm, Rai and Dos Santos shook up running history. Can’t wait to see what comes next for all 3
The thing that I find most exciting about Dos Santos’ race is that he actually does 12 steps in between hurdles 3 through 5. The only other person in history to manage to do that was Kevin Young, and I think it showcases that Dos Santos’ stride may even have the most potential of these three athletes. That said, I personally think Benjamin could possibly benefit from trying to do 12 steps for those same hurdles. If you watch the Tokyo race, he really shortens his stride coming up on those hurdles.
Letesenbet Gidey's 10,000m WR may have been run with wavelights, but she literally couldnt even see them most of the race. She was either ahead of them or right on them and when you run you always look at the ground 10m ahead of you, not directly below you. The lights are for the audience, not the runners.

7: Kiplimo Half Marathon
6: Rojas Triple Jump
5: Sorokin 24 hour

Close enough. I think both lists look pretty good from here...
Kiplimo Half marathon should be higher up. The guy run a 26.38 10K split during the race. Nobody has even come close to those splits.
@@scotland369 But the splits aren’t what matter in a race. It’s the final time that matters. At the end of the day, he beat a one-year old record by a second. A very impressive feat, but not better than Rojas’ world record, for example.
@@scotland369 I think breaking the 15K record in the half marathon was impressive, but the record itself for the entire race wasnt as big a breakthrough
It's hard to decide between Rojas and Sorokin's records. Both of them managed to beat marks have stood for over a generation. I think I would move Rojas to 5th simply because of the margin of improvement she had over the previous record.
56:59 half marathon prediction for Kiplimo is pretty bold. But honestly, I don't disagree
2021 season was an amazing year. 2022 is loaded with major event. World indoors, world championships, Common wealth games.
I hope we get to see even more world records this season
So glad you mention the ultra running WRs needs to more attention. Never thought Yiannis Kourros records would ever be broken. You need to do a video and analysis of those records.
Kipchoge could take that down and include a full night's sleep if he was so inclined.
@@d4ve19 Kipchoge does not train for ultra marathons. He only trains for 26.2 miles anything beyond that is out of scope. There are no east africans who own Ultra WRs its either europeans or Japanese.
So praising kipchoge to take down records that are beyond his capacity unless he trains for them is speculation nothing more.
He is only good at one event 26.2 miles

I also had the exact same prediction as you. I thought the winning time was going to be 46.5, but Warholm taking the win and Rai coming second in 46.55.
When I saw 45.94. I kept saying "WHAT THE F**K" for literally 10 minutes straight. I couldn't believe what I saw. It was 4 am where I was when I saw it.
I was planning to sleep immediately after that race, but ended up only sleeping at 8 am because of how stupidly fast that race was.

I saw some intervjews in Norway, and it was clear that now was the time, Karsten was fed up before he set the first WR, and said that hell I can run a lot faster, just wait and see!
Elaine Thompson-Herah’s 10.54 for the women’s 100 metres deserves an honourable mention because of the questionable wind reading for the current world record.
Very good point. If the previous world record was FloJo’s 10.61 instead of her 10.49, then Elaine’s 10.54 would have broken a 33 year old record. Even older than the record Crouser broke.
It counts as the world record in my book. There's simply too much evidence against FloJo's 10.49.
@@Elliottklassen But the WR isn't 10.61, it's 10.49. Don't get me wrong, I think FloJo's best time wind legal was that 10.61, but you can't really argue against the record books without creating a large controversy.

Should she continue to be branded as the “second fastest woman ever”, even if the evidence overwhelmingly suggests otherwise? As it stands, World Athletics is willing to recognize that FloJo’s time is most likely wind-aided, they just haven’t had enough of a reason to do something about it. If a little controversy can help nudge people - and ultimately World Athletics - to properly give Elaine the credit she deserves by at least putting an asterisk next to that 10.49, I’ve got no problem with sparking a little controversy.
@@Elliottklassen I suppose you are right. But people have been talking about how Flo-Jo's time wasn't wind legal for years, and World Athletics isn't doing anything. The only thing that will take WA to put an asterisk next to that 10.49 is ETH either tying or running faster than 10.49, which may not even happen. People have been trying for ages, but nah, I just don't think that it will ever get to World Athletics to do something about it, I mean it was 33 damn years ago, they might as well just forget about it.

as an 1984 olympian in 400m H for Canada i can tell you that Karsten Warrholm performance and new WR is incredible i never even ran close to that in 400m flat .... it took almost 30 years to have not 1 but 3 guys breaking 47 sec but sub 46 is just wowww
I think Warholm's 46.70 should also be in the list. The record from Young stood for 29 years, and 46.70 is way more impressive than a college record.

First time on your site. Love the way you've broken up & titled the timeline, made it very easy to locate Grant Holloway, the hurdler. He puts me in mind of Ed Moses, the 400m hurdler. I seem to remember he was unbeaten for 10 years. I'd love to see you do something on him.

Aleksandr Sorokin's 309km in 24 hrs at the age of 39 impressed me the most.( maybe because l'm 73).
For now, Karste Waholm is fantastic
For the future, Letesenbet Gidey will be the one to watch.

I feel sorry for Benjamin, and I wonder what goes through your mind when you arrive at the olympics in top shape, blast the previous world record by .5 sec, and it still isn't enough to win the title (and not even close). I would love to know what Benjamin's very first thoughts after the finishing line were , i.e. before any sort of rationalization about his own effort and oustanding performance could happen.
But this race, omg, the 1st, 2nd and 4th all time marks in the same race? that's something you would expect in the first year of a new type of event, not in something that's been run for decades.
And Kevin Young's almost three decade old record broken by 3 athletes in the same race. Warholm's record is stunning, shocking, amazing or whatever superlative you may think of, but this whole race, it has to be the most astonishing single moment in track and field of this century (so far).

Having bicycled 120 miles in under a day on a mountain bike laden with camping gear… the 188 miles on foot seems absolutely insane to me. There’s a level of exhaustion & pain associated with that run that makes it doubly insane.
That's an insane feat by you too though! I imagine you dealt with a few more hills than he did.
Furthest I've cycled was 86 miles and that was plenty, unburdened. I'm not much of a cyclist...

The only reason why the 24h run isn't #1 is because most world class runners aren't interested in trying it. Kiphoge should consider giving it a try when he gives up his marathon career.

With all due respect to Kiplimo’s HM, I can’t rank beating a year-old record by one second higher than Rojas destroying a 26 year old record, and I definitely think she deserves a higher spot on this list. The same goes for McLaughlin, who’s race nearly paralleled what Warholm did, though I would still say the 45.94 was more impressive. I’d say Rojas and McLaughlin both should be at least in the top 5, if not higher.
My thoughts exactly. Kiplimo's record was up there mainly because of his ridiculous pacing, but when you just look at the numbers, Rojas needs to be in the top five, and so does McLaughlin of course.

Absolutely agree Rojas and McLaughlin need to move up to 4 and 5, and I'll also say Crouser needs to be either 1 or 2. He did the equivalent of someone surprassing Koch's 400 or Kratochvílová's 800 record, and did it 3 times.

Warholm was positively "Beamonesque!" It reminded me of Michael Johnson's 19.32 in 1996.
Number 1 is exactly as you described, it's an all-timer. Watching it live, I thought Rai was going to get him, but as Karsten said, he found a little bit extra. Besides the times, it was a dramatic race for a gold final. Crouser's shot record is rightfully up there. That trials WR was effortless looking. Sidney's 400 hurdle is debatable, but I think that's fair at 6. I can see these three medalists, Bol as the bronze winner, knocking chunks of time off this record in the future. There is room to improve. I can't say that for the 45.94 men's record. Then again, who knows with Rai...45.8 in his future?
Raj Benjamin was probably punching the air after that Olympic race. Imagine doing everything perfectly and putting on a historical performance just to still not win the gold.

I'm surprised Warholm's WR isn't ranked first in the World Athletics scoring system. For me, it is way more impressive than any of Usain Bolt's records.

The mental strength required to push yourself constantly for an entire day is absolutely unbelievable... The furthest I've ever ran was 30km and my feet were wrecked. I slept so well the night after that 😂

Nobody told Gidey she was running a HM, she thought she was running another 10k and just kept going at the same pace.

The fact that a race in the olympics where 2! athletes go under the previous world record is only 5th and it is probably a somewhat correct rank says how incredible this year was
Dont belive this record will be broken as long as I live. It was the "perfect storm". In a event thats been a B event for a long time. A new generations of talented athletes reaching close to their peak at the right time, together, on a perfect day, with the perfect build up, with new shoes on a good track. Even with the right lane draw. They may be able to improve slightly but the chances for the other factors to line up like this on the same event again is very small. And I really do belive Karstens "berserker" approach gives him the extra adrenaline to fight of fatigue on a 400. Its almost like a natural doping, like moms who lift a car of their kids kind of thing. If you can harness just a bit of this inner berserker I belive that can make a difference when you have to fight lactate in the end

Norwegians should have their own sport events: Asthmalympics and Asthma world championships. (f.e. winter olympics in Pyeongchang: 1800 doses of Symbicort, 1200 doses of Atrovent, 1200 doses of Alvesco, 360 doses of Ventoline, and 1200 doses of Airomir just for Norway team).
To be fair, there are also other countries with lot of "death sick" atlethes.

I remember thinking that Edwin Moses 47. world record would never be broken. How could anyone improve on his perfect stride? I thought. And that's when beating a record by 3 to 5 tenths of the second was considered "crushing" a record. And then Warholm beat it by over a full second. That's just insane.
i just realized that hurdles add 3 seconds to your 400m time , that means if he ran a 400m he got a 42.94!
