Singers back in Rosetta's day sang because they loved singing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Today's performers are so self absorbed they have no idea what it's like to just enjoy singing and being themselves. I was born in the wrong day and time, but hopefully I'll see Rosetta's in heaven and she'll still be singing her heart out. I'm gonna gather my family and be on the front row. What a great talent!!

Bella Grace They did it that way because that’s the nature of a true musician. Doing it for the love because they know damn well they’ll never get rich. Wish I had a nickel for every cat I know who busks on the street & plays gigs for free or near nothing, working shitty jobs to pay the bills, knowing that’s what they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives. Most of the famous ones aren’t real. They just wanted money & fame. Every once in a while a star shines so bright nothing can cover its shine-not even time.

Man I remember the Jordanaires doing that tune in the 1970's, it was the most amazing night! We had one radio station in town run by one guy and he closed it down to come to the show! They came a few times after that, once or twice with other acts, but this first time at our church was like we were all dying of thirst and they were bringing the Living Water! Hot hot night, my Uncle Bill sitting beside with his arm stretched on the back of the pew, I think I finally ended up standing on the pew with him steadying me so I could see! I must have been, my sisters and I in the dresses made for us at Easter, with wrist corsages we had made ourselves in Vacation Bible School that week. I remember so much of that night, our Bible School projects still ask around the church windowsillss, they laughed at our Sunday School building fund chart given their signature song, and as people filed out at the end, they all stood in the Galilee and shook everybody's hands. How I wish the Sister had been able to come with them!

I feel like I've been in the dark all my life regarding recent music and been lied to about history -- lied to about music, and also that women don't have much influence on music evolution. I have to shift my brain around quite a bit. Not only is the story fascinating and exciting to me, and making me have redo my understanding of the past, but the presentation of this story is of a much higher quality than I expected. Thank you so much for putting this together, corporalhenshaw. My only small complaint is not displaying the name of the person speaking, or displaying the year when an old clip is shown. That would have been a nice-to-have, but I enjoyed this very much nonetheless. Anyone who cares about music or even the history of the US, needs to know about her. (She didn't just have influence on music, but had much influence beyond that as well, based on this series and other things I've read recently.)

Segregation has been the worst thing ever in this country, but because of it we have this superb music and the likes of this fantastic woman. If that sounds racist, it's not intended to. That's not to say white men had shit to do with her talent or the talents of so many other black artists. OMG I would love to go back to this time and be part of this! No, I'd like to go all the way back to the late 1800s when Scott Joplin was first writing his music. Way back in 1972 when I was in my first year in college, my first research paper was on ragtime music and early jazz. Honestly, I feel cheated I was born in the early 50s!
"Her four little white babies!" Lol! Precious!

Ok. Time to put her life on the BIG screen. More then half of the singers from the 50s -70s took something from her music Queen Latifa, would play the part and this would open up so many opportunities for so many. What are we waiting for

God knows His children. She needed a life; and kept the awareness that she was saved. A bend Reed The Lord will not break, and a smoking flax God will never put out.

The problem was that the church would not pay you and wanted you to play and sing for free and people wanted to eat too and pay rent. I worked for a church and for the first 6 years or so did not get paid for all my work but then it did change a bit. But people left to get paid so many great people who sang back then started in the church but left to get paid.

You're absolutely right. The only ones that make money working for a church are the pastors/preachers/elders/priests/ cardinals/the pope, only the big honchos of the church make thousands if not millions in the business. It's sad that for a lot of people God have a price tag, and your salvation depends on how much you give to church (them). The church is more a business venture than the house of God all mighty, many swindlers find their way into a church to live well off the hard work of others using the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Because the corruption of a few many don't believe anymore.
